Apple did not begin selling an unlocked version of the iPhone 4S in the US until 11/11/11. I believe it went on sale only through the online store at that time. I'm not sure if it's available at retail yet.
What you purchased was a phone without a contract commitment. It is still locked to AT&T. AT&T will NOT unlock iPhones for any reason. Return it and get your money back, then use that to purchase an unlocked phone. -

I have since run across internet articles and forum posts that said some local Apples stores in the US can now sell you an unlocked iPhone 4s. I would suggest that either you or a friend call the Apple store you plan on visiting to see if they will sell you an unlocked 4s.

I am currently looking to get an iphone5 and saw Apple sells unlocked iphones. I currently have an iphone4 that was an At&t phone but I had them unlock it when my contract expired. I switched over to Straighttalk and it doesnt allow my MMS features to work on their plan. Ive tried to switch the MMS settings but nothing worked. If I was to buy an iphone5 would it work on any system with different sim cards and if I had to change the settings would I be able to restore them to the way it was when i purchased it in case certain things dont work. Yes. The T-Mobile nanoSIM which came with the full price, unlocked iPhone 5 will work for a prepaid plan. However, neither Apple retail store employees nor the T-Mobile customer svc reps know this. It was quite an ordeal to activate. I had to order the prepaid activation kit online, wait for its arrival by snail mail, then use the activation code from the kit with the nanoSIM to activate the prepaid monthly plan $30/mon for 100 min+ unlim text + 5 GB 4G/LTE. I live in Pasadena, CA, and the 4G and LTE coverage here is extensive and reliable.
I tossed the SIM which came with the activation kit.
My local T-Mobile retail store wouldn't sell me a prepaid activation kit when I told them that I wanted the web-only $30/mon plan. The customer svc reps couldn't or wouldn't give me an activation code to use either. -

Yes, but not with LTE network access if T-Mobile in the UK has LTE network access.
In addition, the warranty if needed will be honored in the U.S. only. Any problem with the iPhone that cannot be resolved by any other means besides an exchange under warranty will require you returning to the U.S. with the iPhone for the exchange. -

Some retailers, such as Best Buy, offer a much more robust warranty - even covering accidental damage. Or other retailers may offer bonuses - such as free case or store gift card as an incentive. The orginal Apple 1 year warranty against manufacturer's defects applies no matter where it's sold.
I bought both my touch and my iPad from Best Buy and have no issues with it. (the closest apple store was over an hour away)
I think the only warning I'd offer is for a person buying a used device second hand is to make sure it's from a reputable retailer and that hte device is unlocked and ready to use. -

I want to buy an unlocked 4s from apple and use it permanently on a foreign CDMA cell service (IUSA Cell in Mexico). I am getting conflicting information on whether this is possible. Apple website says the phones are unlocked for GSM use only.
I called apple when i bought an Ipad to help decide on a GSM vs CDMA version and was told that if I went to Mexico with a CDMA version of the Ipad (2) that i would call the carrier give them some numbers and they would activate it. When i returned I was to call Verizon and reactivate it in the US. I ultimately got the GSM version so i never tested the theory.
I am now thinking of getting the 4S to use in Mexico permanently but want to use it on a CDMA carrier because it is half the cost per month. But will this work? Thoughts?There is no such thing as an unlocked CDMA iPhone. All CDMA iPhones are carrier locked and the carriers do not allow unlocking. All legitimatly unlocked iPhones are GSM only The CDMA side is completely disabled in them.
You can only use a CDMA iPhone if the carrier you want to use offers one. -

The No Service means there is a problem with cellular service. You mention wifi in your title. Which is it you are having trouble with? What happens when you switch on and off as you state in your post? Are you saying that wifi does not connect while at home either?

There are conflicted information in this forum. The contract free T-mobile 5s is not "unlocked" in US, it is supposed to be unlocked for overseas GSM. However, it is not clear whether you need to activate it on T-mobile first and wait for 40 days for unlock code to unlock it before you can use it overseas.
I contacted both Apple and T-mobile multiple times. None of them answered question with a clear answer.
The best way to confirm this is to purchase the 5s from the Apple Store. Remove the T-mobile SIM before you turn 5s on and replace the SIM with your international SIM. Turn it on and go through the initial setup to see if the iPhone is lock or not.
If it is locked, simply return to the Apple store with full refund in 30 days. Since Apple is not answering the question, why not try it yourself on their dime? -
