Can I do a carrier unlock of my iPhone 5 without losing all my data?

I have been searching through the forums on here and am only able to find information about restoring the iPhone after forgetting a passcode. This isn't the case.
When I had my iPhone 4 unlocked by my carrier a few years ago, I paid the fee and was instructed to restore my iPhone but NOT from backup. Of course, this meant I lost all of my contacts/pictures/messages etc. Once you instruct iTunes to restore am iPhone not from backup, it erases all the backups of your phone and starts anew.
I now have an iPhone 5 that is currently locked to Virgin Mobile Canada. I want to have them unlock it so I can use it with a different carrier during trips to the USA, but obviously I don't want to lose my data.
Is there any way to restore the iPhone as required for the unlock (that is, NOT from the backup,) and then afterwards be able to access the backup? I really don't want to lose everything again!

I've never had iTunes erase the backups. If it's deleting all your backups, something's wrong with your system. But in any case, Apple's instructions don't say to restore the iPhone without using a backup. They say to erase it, and then restore the backup:

  • Everytime I try to update to iOS5 on my iPhone 4 I get an error containing 0xE while it is trying to backup data from the iPhone.  I have done everything suggested in Apple support.  How can I upgrade to iOS5 without losing all the data on my phone?

Everytime I try to update to iOS5 on my iPhone 4 I get an error containing 0xE while it is backing up data from the iPhone before installing the new operating system.  I have done everything suggested in Apple support with no success.  I still get the error everytime (about 5 minutes into backing up iPhone data).  How can I upgrade to iOS5 without losing all the data on my iPhone (the error message says that if I continue I will lose all data on the phone)?  If I have already synced the phone before upgrading the OS, would I be able to restore my data after installing the new OS by syncing after the OS upgrade is complete?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem today and was able to resolve it without having to do a restore or reset. The problem had something to do with my mail accounts. The upgrade reset my mail settings, switching both my gmail and my .mac mail to "archive all mail". I went into the General Settings, disabled that setting, and resynced the phone. The "other" storage allottment dropped back down to less than a gig.
Before you restore or reset, I would try that first.

  • I no longer have iTunes that is synced to my iPhone and now I need to update my iPhone with iTunes. Is there a way I can do this without losing all my data?

I no longer have the iTunes that is synced to my iPhone and now I need to update my iPhone with iTunes. Is there a way I can do this without losing all my data? Can I access my iTunes that is on my stolen laptop, so that I don't lose my info and photos etc? Please help!

    Hi Michela27,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you have content on your iPhone that isn't on your computer, the best thing is to use the advice in this article to transfer it to your new computer before setting up sync:

  • How can I change my account on icloud without losing all my data and suppressing the former account. I just need to change the email address... TKS

I changed my email address, how can I keep my icloud data without cancelling my former account...?

    Hey there Fonz111,
It sounds like you have a new email address you would like to use to replace the email address you are currently using for your Apple ID, without losing any of the info you have in the account. You can update the email address with this article named:
Apple ID: Changing your Apple ID
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5621
To change your Apple ID, follow these steps:
Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com), click "Manage your Apple ID", and sign in.
If you have two-step verification turned on, you'll be asked to send a verification code to the trusted device associated with your Apple ID. If you are unable to receive messages at your trusted device, follow the guidelines for what to do if you can't sign in with two-step verification.
In the "Apple ID and Primary Email Address section," click Edit.
Enter the email address you want to use, then click Save Changes. Apple will send a verification email to that address.
Open the email from Apple, then click Verify Now in the email.
When the My Apple ID page opens, sign in with your renamed Apple ID.
If you have two-step verification turned on, you'll be asked to send a verification code to the trusted device associated with your Apple ID.
After you see a message indicating that verification is complete, remember to update all of the stores and services that you use with your Apple ID.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Can I backup my iPhone into a new iTunes install on a new PC without losing all my data?

I've recently lost an old Windows XP PC which I have been using for several years and had my entire iTunes library and iPhone history. I have since purchased a new Windows 7 PC and installed itunes onto it.
Is it possible for me to sync my iPhone onto the new computer without losing any of the data on my phone? I don't have any music stored on my iPhone so that's not a problem, however, I do need to save all the current Contacts, Messages, E-Mails and Photos that are on the iPhone. Any help is much appreciated in this matter.
    - JD.

By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are replacing your computer, your phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under Preferences>Devices in itunes(under the edit menu if using Windows).
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Outlook, Windows Address Book) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect your phone, iTunes running, do not sync at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
You should be good to go.

  • How can I recover my master password, set up by mistake, without losing all my existing login / password data?

When touring the latest version of Firefox I created a master password and unfortunately never wrote it down. Now I must get my Church's taxes and W-2's done and I'm unable to login to my state and IRS/SSA accounts as I don't have my latest logins and passwords because they were all stored in my older version of Firefox. Everything I've read, so far, states that resetting the master password will result in the loss of all my login and password data. I cannot have this happen! There has to be some way I can either recover my login and password file data or the password I created for my master password? I need help with this ASAP as time is running out.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately it is not the solution I am hoping for. Both of the links you posted clearly state that resetting or removing my master password will result in the loss of all my existing login and password data. I wouldn't have a problem with that if I could save or print out my current, but hidden by the password manager until I enter my master password, login and password data which I could eventually reproduce within password manager. Unfortunately this is the only place where I have all that data recorded and we are talking about many many lines of login data!

  • I get "iPad disabled" message. Can I restore it without losing all my data? Can I restore it from a friend's iTunes account without messing up his account? If so, how?

My iPad turned on while it was in my suitcase and began playing through my iTunes music. I turned it off and can no longer turn it back on. I get a message "iPad disabled." How can I restore it without losing my data?  I'm using a friend's computer and am particularly concerned not to mess up his data (including his iTunes account).

You won't lose data, if you've been backing up your ipad on a regular basis.

  • Can I delete an e-mail account and reinstall it without losing all my old messages, folders, address lists etc?

I can no longer send from email from my account and keep getting the message that the connection to the smtp server was lost or the settings are wrong.
I would like to reinstall the account to make sure that the servers settings are correct, but I fear that I might lose years of messages that I have saved in my folder system as well as my address books, hence the question.
Alternatively, does anyone know how to reset the server settings so that Thunderbird will work with Rogers Yahoo mail?
Thanks for any help you might provide.

Two ways you can do it
If your not Removing the Thunderbird try this '''First Method'''
*Copy the entire mail and address to local folder and local address

**Try this Addon for local copy - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/copy-folder/

  • Can I REPAIR my External Hard Drive in Disk Utility without losing all of the Data?

    So, here's the story...
A while back, I made the mistake of throwing my TM backups in the Trash folder. They were "stuck" there in my External Trash FOREVER until I finally decided to do something about it. I read a few forums that gave instructions on how to delete those volumes through Manually through a series of prompts in TERMINAL. This process actually WORKED and removed the files from the trash, HOWEVER, now the Disk isn't mounting properly. After running "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility, It's telling me that the disk needs to be repaired.
Fearing that my disk may be wiped completely, I thought I'd transfer all the files over to another HD and Repair the Problematic Disk just to be safe.
But When I try to copy the files over to another drive with ample space, it gives the message "The operation can’t be completed because the selection contains both backup items and non-backup items."
I am now at a cross roads, because I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE ALL OF THE DATA ON THIS DRIVE!!!!  What do I do??

    Hi,
If it is not mounting properly but you can "grab" something in an effort to Transfer it, what are you seeing ?
Can you limit it to different files/folders ?
Other than that I would try Carbon Copy Cloner (you can Try before your Buy sort of thing)
Use this to Create the Backup of the drive.
    Then repair drive.

  • How can I sync my iPhone to a new library without losing all the data on the phone?

I recently switched computers as the old one had died but I can't transfer any of my music from the iTunes to the new phone. Is there any way I can backup the phone and then sync it with the new library and somehow restore all my app's etc?

  • How can I change the main computer I sync my iPhone to without losing my app data?

I used to sync my iPhone 4 to the family computer because it is a mac, but I recently moved out and need to sync it with my computer (a pc). I know I will lose all my music and video content but is there a way to prevent the loss of my app data? I do not see anywhere I can transfer information besides purchases made on the phone. It would appear iTunes will not let me back up data onto a computer that I do not already sync with. Any ideas?

  • Can I start a new itunes without losing all the data on my phone and the progress on my apps?

I want to break off of the family account my iDevices have been attached to since 2005. All of my phone's data is in my own personal iCloud on my email, and I created an itunes account on the same email. I know I'll probably lose all of my songs, but can I salvage app progress and text messages? Or does home sharing allow me to not get all the music they have downloaded on my account? I'm really confused by all of this but I know I need to break off the account eventually.

iDevices are designed to sync to only one computer/library.
Attempts to sync to a different computer/library will replace the content that currently exists on the device with content from the new computer.
Bottom line, you WILL lose the content on the device.

  • TS1591 My ipod classic (80gb) won't sync with my mac & itunes. How can i fix this without losing all my data? (ie. music, photos, video)

My ipod classic is still working, its not frozen or anything. It just won't sync up with my macbook and itunes. I recently realized that I had previously connected it to a PC just to charge it then it when i tried to connect it to my mac, it wouldn't sync up. Can someone help me figure this out? I don't want to lose all of my data though, like music, photos, or videos. Any help is appreciated! Thank you for your time!

okay, I don't know about the rest, but about the songs never actually loading onto your iPod, I found in another discussion how to fix that. I'm using Windows 7, so I don't know if the steps are the same, but the end result is the same. So go into your Start menu, then into accessories, right click 'Command Prompt' and click 'Run as administrator'. Then type in the following: netsh winsock reset then press Enter. After a few seconds it should tell you to to restart your computer for changes to take effect. Restart your computer, then restart iTunes, then everything should be working fine. It still takes forever sometimes to update the iPod, but eventually it will work. I've had to do this multiple times, so I'd suggest copying & pasting this solution into a notepad or Word document and saving it on your computer, so you don't have to go through the discussions again to find it. This tends to happen to me nearly every day unfortunately Hope this fixes that problem, but I'm not having any of the other problems fortunately, except for removing the artwork of the songs it updates without me asking it too. PS I think my problem may be with iOS 5, because iTunes 10.5 came out before iOS 5, and I think everything was fine before I updated my iPod, but I really don't know where the problem lies
