Can I do a ram upgrade on my imac and what kind of firewire do I have?pgrade and firewire

I have an iMac from 2008 or thereabouts. I want to get into video editing and buy FCPX. I have model identifier iMac8.1, with an Intel Core2 Duo 2.66 Ghz, with 2 GB ram, one 1 GB DDR2SDRAM 800 MHz in each bank. Graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro. The FireWireBus is up to 800 Mb/sec.
Questions:
Can I expand to 4 GB of ram, as I’m told I should do for FCPX. Do I have the slots for that?
Is the graphics card sufficient for FCPX?
To get an external hard drive with fast connection for video transfer, do I need one with a Firewire 400 connector cable or Firewire 800? Or do they use the same connectors?
Thanks in advance for all help.

According to this http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.66-20-inch-al uminum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html your iMac can be upgraded to even 6GB RAM.
The 2600Pro is sadly on this list http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664 of not being OpenCL-compatible which is a requirement for FCP X
FirewireBus up to 800Mb/sec means that you have 1 FireWire800 port (plus 1 Fireswire400 port) on your iMac.
FW800 and FW400 use different connectors but there are FW800-to-FW400 adapters avaiable.
Personally i would go for an external harddisk with a FW800 connector.

With respect, we'll need rather more detail than that.
In general, you can only roll back an upgrade to a library with a back up. No back up, no roll back.

  • IMAC 24¨ WHAT KIND OF MEMORY I NEED TO UPGRADE MY COMPUTER?

I have an IMAC 24¨ What kind of memory i need to upgrade it? It has actually 667CL5

You posted in the PPC iMac forum, but there was not a 24" PPC iMac.  There are several 24" Intel models.
To tell what memory you need it is best to check the exact model identifier, click the apple left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware and what does it show as the Model Identifier?  With that you can go to either http://www.everymac.com and find the appropriate iMac and see what the correct memory is.  Or, you can go to OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com and see what they offer for that model iMac.  They are the trusted sources of Mac memory.

I have an IMAC and I'm running OSX 10.9.2.  I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.  In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.  Is this possible? Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

I'm a new potential FCP X user.  Can I buy software to load onto my imac and macbook pro or is FCP X only available as a download?  I'd like to be able to edit on the road as well as at home.

Here's a short tutorial video about how to move back and forth between your base computer and the on-the-go machine.  Very important info about which things can be copied within Finder and which things MUST be copied from within FCP X.  Best wishes.

  • How can I attach two extra monitoe to an IMac and have them work independently of the INas nonitor where I can place a document and manipulate it independently?

How can I attach two additional monitors th an IMac and be able to place documents in either one or all three and manipulate them independnetly from one another without affecting the others?

On the vintage machine you have you would need something like:
    http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/
However if you bought a new 27" iMac they have 2 video outputs that will work with Thunderbolt or MiniDisplay port outputs to external monitors.

Yes you can. Boxed versions or downloads from the Adobe store are multi-platform for PSE10 although earlier versions were not.

  • Can I run time capsule on both my imac and pc laptops?

Can I run time capsule on both my Imac and pc laptops?

Depends on what you mean by "run".  Both the Mac and PC could connect using either wireless or Ethernet.
The iMac could backup automatically using Time Machine over wireless or Ethernet.
Genie TimeLine Pro might be able to backup the PC automatically, but you would need to check on this with the Genie folks to confirm.

  • Can't get 4GB RAM Upgrade to work in 2.8GHz iMac

I bought two 2GB RAM Modules @ Frys to replace the 1GB in my 2.8GHz iMac 24". It was a Mac Refurb bought from their store. When I put in both 2GB, it won't boot up. It will boot up with one 1 and one 2, for a total of 3GB. Both are running @ 667 MHz, however the 2GB is a Crucial and they say I should run part # CT817145. http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=39D3BF46A5CA7304
What I got from Frys is part # CT25664AC800. http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=F4042F1EA5CA7304
Crucials site shows the specs to be the same at first glance.
I swapped slots all around and still no dice, it won't start with both 2GB's.
So why is it booting from 3GB and not 4GB?
Can anyone be of help besides taking both back and getting the part number Crucial says, even though the specs appear to be similar.
    Thank you so much!

    Hello cwinkler
Use this first article to identify exactly which iMac model you have:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1463?viewlocale=en_US
The following article's are the iMac Spec's for the mid 2007 and Early 2008.
    http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMacMid2007.html
    http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMacEarly2008.html
To me it's sounds like you have a Mid 2007 2.8GHz that uses PC2-5300 667GHz, only the Early 2008 models use PC2-6400 800MHz ram.

  • 8GB Ram Upgrade for 27" iMac (Not Quad Core)

Hey guys, I have an iMac 27", not the quad core though. I want to know, what is the best UK retailer to buy 8GB of Ram for my iMac. I have 4GB at the moment, and I want to run FCP, and After Effects more efficiently, speed up Render time etc.
Where can I buy some from a shop that could be found in the Trafford Centre, so Curries/PC World , The Apple Shop, Selfridges, etc.
Any ideas about how much it would cost?
Also how much more would 16GB of RAM be?
    Is it easy to install?
    Thanks guys
    -Bob

Surf to http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac and find the correct memory for your iMac.
    OWC ships worldwide.
Good prices. Not the lowest, but their service is worth it.

  • Can i plug an usb drive into a iMac and access it with a Macbook pro?

I have an iMac that is less than 3 months old and my wife now has a two week old Macbook Pro.
    IMac:
    21.5" screen
    3.1 quad core i7
    16 GB Ram
    1 TB Fusion drive
    Macbook Pro:
    13" screen
    3.0 dual core i7
    8 GB ram
    512 GB Flash storage
    Both have Mountain Lion.
    Both are running iOS 6.1.2
I would like to attach an external USB hard drive to the iMac and allow the Macbook Pro to be able to have full access to just the external USB hard drive.  Either it can't be done or I am just not getting the Sharing settings set correctly.  I played around with sharing last night on both machines.  When I would plug in a FAT 32 thumb drive into either machine and find it, I would add it to he shared folder but it would only allow me and "Everyone" to have access.  I could not change "Everyone" to "No Access" because "Everyone" was greyed out or add my wife.  I can access the Macbook Pro as Mark with the iMac but I can only access the iMac from the Macbook Pro as a "Guest".
I am using a Netgear WNR3500L router.  I currently have the USB hard drive connected to the router via the Readyshare USB port but it is formatted as NTFS for Windows shared files.  This router does not recognize HFS+ formatted hard drives in the USB port.   When I move it to the iMac, I will back it up and then reformat it as HFS+.  Since the router is about a year old and working fine, I would buy an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule if that is my only choice.
I don't normally turn off the iMac.
I would not want to allow access to any other device.
Since I am very new at Mac's, I would appreciate any help that any of you can offer me.

    Topher Kessler,
    Thanks for commenting to me.
My thumb drive is formatted as Fat 32 so your first paragraph explains what I am seeing.
You are correct that my existing router does not support HFS+.  It is visible from my MAC and some file are read only.
The drive that I will be wanting to attach to the iMac would be formatted as HFS+ so it would not be accessible from my router.
So, if I setup sharing (If it is possible) and thern plugged in a USB 3.0 hard drive into my iMac, would it be accessible to my Macbook Pro?  If it would not be, it looks like an Airport Extreme or a Time Capsule are my only options?
I see that a Netgear 4500 is Time Machine compatible.  Any idea what that means?  When I read pages 80 through 82, it appears to me that you format your drive to HFS+ and then eventually plug it into the router usb.

  • Can I transfer photos from old macbook to iMac and put all photos on a new external drive without losing any photos?

Had to purchase new Macbook so all devices could sync with Yosemite.   I use iMAC and Macbook with iPhone, etc.  I have many photos over years and do scrapbooking.  I want to preserve my pix on an external hard drive and organize them.  I am currently using external drive on iMAC and a separate one on Macbook that is outdated.  I use them with TM for backup.  Can I transfer pix data only to the iMAC via a transfer cable and then send all photos to new external drive for access and safe storage?  I am confused about backup not preserving my photos.  Help please me transfer and save my pix and properly set up my external for access.  Thanks a bunch!

    connie,
I assume you are storing your photos in an iPhoto library, since you are asking in the iPhoto forum?
if you want to store your iPhoto library on an external drive and keep them safe, you need two external drives.  One drive to store the working copy of the photo library, that you are using to work with your photos,  and one drive for time machine to make back copies of your iPhoto library.
Can I transfer pix data only to the iMAC via a transfer cable and then send all photos to new external drive for access and safe storage?
You could simply plug your new drive into the MacBook and copy the library from the old drive to the new. Then connect the new drive to your iMac and use the iPhoto library there.
Make sure, your new drive has the correct file system - MacOS Extended (Journaled) .  See this link:  iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
