Hi,
I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger. I thought I'd better get with it!.
I use front row a fair amount as the iMac is used for multimedia mostly.
However, the computer doesn't respond when I press the menu button on the remote, even when I get really close.
I have check the security settings but they are almost all shaded out. The remote is not paired and the setting state that any remote can be used. However, when the security pane is open the menu button works and opens front row?
It might be irrelevant but I use eye diversity with a remote. I also have B&W speakers with a remote. However, it all worked fine on Tiger.
Having to go onto the iMac to open Front Row sort of spoils the point of having a remote.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Thanks for your input. It seems obvious. Obviously one of those Mac things I hadn't picked up on yet.
Unfortunately the remote still wouldn't pair. I pressed next and menu for ages as instructed but nothing?
I have messed around a bit more and it appears that Front Row works when I quit Eye Diversity TV. The iMac appears slow to open applications with Snow Leopard compared to Tiger, especially after waking. Do you know whether this is normal?
I'll try and raise the issue with EyeTV but clearly something odd is going on. I read a comment that it was best to format the iMac before installing Snow Leopard. I'm just a bit worried about losing the data and programmes I already have on the iMac.

Best way to re set-up iPhoto on Snow Leopard from Tiger

Currently have Tiger OS and iPhoto. My iPhoto Library is on an external HDD. Also I have separate folders on the external HDD containing some .jpegs which should be in iPhoto and all my movies .avi which could be in iPhoto. I am about to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard.
What I am wondering is how I can consolidate my all my photos/movies into the new (Snow Leopard version) of iPhoto when I install. For example, in the iPhoto Library folder 2006, various .jpeg and .avi files from that year are not there - they are in a seperate folder "2006" (because I moved them using Finder when I was a Mac newbie).
Would it be better to copy all the .jpegs in the iPhoto Library into a single folder, then add all the stray photos from elsewhere in the filing system to that folder, then ask the new iPhoto to import photos from there? Or should I manually copy stray photos (eg. those from 2006) into the relevant iPhoto Library folder prior to the new installation.
Final note. I have around 50,000 photos and on my current system iPhoto is very slow to initially load up - is there a filing configuration which would make the app work more efficiently or does the SL version do that already?

Upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger

Hello All,
I want to upgrade, neigh, I need to upgrade my iMac 24" from Tiger to Snow Leopard because my iPad will not work without it. I was told to buy an external hard drive to drag and drop files to it because I will lose everything in the upgrade. Which files or folders can or cant be drag and dropped. I'm really not computer savvy and I have no clue on what I'm doing. Will I need to copy any or all of my application folders like Office Mac? Will it save any of my network settings? Any help on making this as painless as possible would be greatly appreciated.

well, it's high time you learn. not backing up is an AWFUL practice.
all sorts of things can happen to your computer. the simplest of which is hard drive failure. it happens eventually to *every single hard drive*. no exceptions. and it can happen at any moment and without warning.
if you are not backed up and your hard drive goes you loose everything.
there are plenty of excellent backup programs for OS X.

and external hard drives are quite cheap these days. the best form of a backup before upgrading is a bootable clone. get an external firewire drive and make a bootable clone using CCloner or Superduper. then boot from the clone and test that it works. THEN upgrade. if anything goes wrong you have an exact copy of your old system on the clone and can restore it at any moment so you are quite safe whatever comes during the upgrade.

Upgrading to Snow Leopard from Tiger with an external DVD drive.

I am trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from Tiger 10.4.11 with an external DVD drive. The disc loads OK and prompts me for my password to restart and begin the installation. On restart, instead of being asked to accept the terms of use and etc... I just get the same prompt to restart and get caught in a loop. Any tips?

Try this instead:
Boot Using OPTION key:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
4. Select the disk icon of the Snow Leopard DVD.
5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

Can't install snow leapard....help...

Hey everyone... I just purchased and received Snow leapard in the mail.. I am trying to update from 10.5.8 but When I go to install, it says I cannot use my HD due to it being used for Time machine back up... Please help.. I tried deleting my backups.backupdb folder, since I had no need for it and saw someone say to do it on on of the forums, but it is still saying the same thing...

Sounds like your trying to install onto the ext HD that has your TM backup on it. Why? Better to use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to put a bootable backup/clone onto that HD or another one. Then, install SL onto the MBP. That gives you a backup in case something goes awry.

Can't boot snow leopard from external drive

I have a copy of snow leopard installed on a separate usb hard drive which I use to run some PowerPC programmes under rosetta. I can attach this USB drive to my Mac Pro and also to an Intel Macbook and choose to start up on this external drive without any issues. However when I try restarting my new 2011 iMac on this external usb drive the machine crashes every time with a kernal panic. Is this problem unique to me or does everyone else have this issue with new iMacs. Mine is a 27" 3.4ghz i& with 12ghb ram installed running 10.72. Is their soemthing I can do to resolve this problem?

I have now solved the problem of being able to boot from either Snow Leopard or Lion on a new Mid 2011 iMac. This is how I did it.
1. Attach an external USB drive to an earlier Mac or borrow one from a friend. In my case I used my 2009 Unibody Macbook (which has Lion installed on it but does allow you to install Snow Leopard on an attached device) Put the Snow Leopard install disc in this machine and tell it to install Snow Leopard on your attached USB Drive.
2. Start up the Macbook (or whatever machine you are using) and get it to restart on the attached USB drive so that it boots up in Snow Leopard. Then when Snow Leopard is up and running on the attached external drive, do a software update to bring it up to 10.68 (the current version). This step is important as I found that if I plugged in the external USB drive into the iMac with only operating system 10.6 installed it would cause a kernal panic on start up when I choose to start up on the external USB drive.
3. With Snow Leopard updated to system 10.68 you can now plug it into your iMac and restart the iMac booting into Snow Leopard from the external USB drive. You do this by either going to System Preferences>Startup disk and choosing the external drive, or by holding down the option key when you restart your Mac and choosing the external USB drive.
4. The next step is to make your iMac dual boot now that you know it can run Snow Leopard successfully from an external USB drive. To do this, go into Utilities>Disk Utility and select your main drive. Select the main disk (with Lion on it) and then choose Partition and choose 2 Partitions. Drag the first partition bundary line down to make the second partition size as small as possible. In my case I had a stock 1TB drive and the smallest partition size it would allow me was 70gb. Create the second partition (assuming you have spare space on your drive to allow this to happen). This will then create a second hard drive icon on your desktop. I renamed mine "Snow Leopard startup".
5. Download the free (and excellent) utility Carbon Copy Cloner and use it to copy your Snow Leopard operating sytem from your attached USB external drive to your new partition.
6. That's it! Now you can choose to start up your iMac from either Lion or Snow Leopard using either method mentioned in 3 above.
7. As a final step I suggest your install your Rosetta only programmes in your new Snow Leopard partition so that you can access them easily and keep them all together.

Please tell me how I can remove Snow Leopard from my machine & revert back to Leopard 10.5.8
Since I loaded Snow leopard, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark & Mail all quit over & over again. I never had ANY of these issues before loading snow leopard. I rely daily on the programs I listed. I am not saying once in a while, but constantly; opening the programs, exporting, placing graphics, emailing, you name it, it quits the program I am in. I keep sending apple the crash reports, but I am afraid I have reached my end. (Apple must have a folder fu;l of crashes with my email address in it by now.)
To maintain my sanity PLEASE tell me there is a way to do this without risking loosing any of my data.
I do have time machine hooked up.
Please be a life saver (sanity saver) and tell me how to get Snow Leopard off my machine!!!!!

First, Welcome to the Discussions,
Second, there is no way to successfully degrade an OS to a previous version. You would have to install anew a previous OS, thereby erasing all your data. Then you would take that version up as far as you want to go.
Of course if you've been using Time Machine you can recover to the prior system and retain your files using that.
Best of all would be to have a firewire external drive and use an app like this to make a clone on. No worries then if one wants to go back before any major changes very precisely.

Can't import my mailboxes from Tiger Mail into Leopard

Hi everyone,
I bought a new MBP and I'm now in the process of carefully importing my mailboxes from Tiger mail, on my Tiger backup HD, to the new mail program. I have about 20000 messages saved since 1999, sorted by project etc. Each time I select a batch of mailboxes to import, I get a failure message when it's almost done, saying that some messages couldn't be imported. This is very frustrating: my e-mail archive is possible the most important collection of files on the computer. I would hate for it to become messed up/corrupted.

Try copying the directory ~/Library/Mail/ (the library folder in your home directory) from your old computer to the same location on your Leopard install. I believe the versions of Mail in Tiger and Leopard use the same directory structure, so this should work.

Can I install Snow Leopard from my MacBook?

I've got two computers, an IMac (Dual Core, around 4 year old) with Leopard and a MacBook Pro (less than 2 years old) with Snow Leopard. I will be buying a new IMac in a few months but in the meanwhile I was wondering if I could install Snow Leopard from the MacBook Pro to avoid all the incompatibility issues that are starting to surface.
I'm not upgrading my MacBook to Montain Lion because I don't want to miss the chance of updaiting my old IMac (surely it won't be compatible with Montain Lion).

You should be able to use the MBP's install disc to update the iMac. Give it a shot and let us know. Do know that Lion and ML will render all of your PPC apps useless, so consider whether or not a new machine is a smart move.

Can I Install Snow Leopard From USB On Another Mac?

I own a 2010 macbook air that came with a snow leopard usb drive.
I've recently been given a 2008 macbook 4,1 that is running leopard. I'd like to install snow leopard on this and use it as a secondary computer. Will I be able to use the usb stick from my macbook air to update this computer from leopard to snow leopard? If updating won't work would I be able to perform a fresh install of snow leopard from my usb drive? Or is my only option to purchase a snow leopard dvd from apple?

Ah! Thank you, Niel. Forgot about the "weird" Air models without any kind of optical drive. I realize to get the Air models as thin as Apple did required the removal of such a drive, but virtually every user who bought one had to then go out and buy an external DVD drive anyway so they could install their other purchased software.

I am currently running tiger on a 2007 model. I want to get an iPod touch as my classic died. To be able to get a touch Ive been told I need to upgrade to snow leopard. Can I upgrade straight to snow leaped from tiger? Some one please help!

i currently have a 2207 iMac and I'm running tiger. I had an iPod classic which synced up beautifully but it has just died. iPod touch's are the only things that are on the market now as classic are no more. I've been told that an iPod touch won't qork on tiger operating system and I need to get snow lWoodard. Can I upgrade straight to snow leopard or do I need to get leopard first? Can't upgrade to snow leopard from tiger with mac box set

i have a macbook that runs 10.4.11. and this happened like last yr i think. i was going to upgrade it to snow leopard, and so i went to the store and bought the mac box set, the one costs $196. and here comes the trouble, no matter what i did, it couldn't be properly upgraded. like when it shows the window that says it is upgrading, it just tell you some errors occurred and then it couldn't proceed. so ever since i just continued using 10.4.11.
now i kind want to upgrade it again but im afraid that sth wrong is gonna happen again. so what should i do?? (b4 i upgraded, i erased everything in my mac, but still...)
the funny thing is, once i actually brought my macbook into the store and tried to upgrade in front f the technician, and it failed. later on they told me that i need to increase its memory from 1GB to 2GB, and i did so. but still........T.T

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.

Report any errors it has.
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

I upgraded to snow leopard from tiger and to adobe cs5. my adobe and hp photosmart do not work. what can i do to get them to work.

my hp photosmart and adobe photoshop cs5 will not work even though even though everything was installed after a clean-erase and all additional software was installed as directed.

Well first you need to make sure your third party software is compatible with the operating system version, so for Adobe you need to check on their forums.
For HP you need to check their site that you've installed the correct drivers (if necessary)
Also make sure OS X is fully updated.

Upgrade to Leopard or Snow Leopard from Tiger

Hi!
Does anyone know how to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 or higher? I currently have 4.11 Tiger and am willing to download for free, or purchase the newer operating systems? I've downloaded both JMP and Matlab, but neither will run on anything below 10.5.
I looked at the apple website and can't find anything obvious and the new Snow Leopard only upgrades from leopard??
Also, will upgrading my system affect any of my current files or programs?

What types of APP problems are you referring to with 10.5?
Some do not work under 10.5, some will never work or be updated, some have free updates, some have paid updates, just far too many to mention.
I would be more than happy to stick with Tiger, but I can't run the stats programs (JMP and MAtlab) I need for data analyses!

Only other solution I can think of, which may or may not be acceptable to you, is to get an external Firewire Drive, Install 10.5 on it, boot from the OS you need to use for different things.
