Can I downgrade the BIOS on my X201i?

Does anybody know if it is possible/advisable to "update" one's BIOS to a previous version? That is, are there additional problems involved with downgrading the BIOS than the common risks with BIOS upgrades?
What I'm considering doing is downgrading to the version released in late June 2013, since it supposedly fixes the battery drain issue. Nobody at Lenovo apparently cares to respond to any of my queries of how it is possible that I have a newer version of the BIOS than is currently posted as the newest one (I have 1.40-1.20 installed since Oct-2012; the latest, new version posted Jun-2013 is 1.40-1.15) nor what to do about it. So I'm considering going ahead and reinstalling (overwriting) my current BIOS with the one posted on the web site: 1.40-1.15. (I'm experiencing quite severe problems with heat as well as terrible battery drain post upgrading to Win8 Pro.)
I'm no BIOS expert, so I am unaware of any risks or potential problems by downgrading one's BIOS. Perhaps there's nothing to it and amounts to the same as any BIOS upgrade/install. If so, please let me know. I'm in complete lack of reliable expertise.
Thank you!

I'd tend to believe that your problems are related to W8 and not the BIOS version that you're running.
That being said, yes you can downgrade the BIOS and the risks are the exact same ones that are present during any BIOS upgrade.
Good luck.

  • Satellite C660 - How to downgrade the BIOS?

I have the same problem. Latest BIOS version for my notebook is 1.3 but on my is 1.4 installed?! Notebook is 10 days and I cant work with it.
We have few C660 (PSC0LE) we bought tham on same day and they all have 1.3 and are working perfect. Only my is BIOS 1.4 version and its not good at all.
Please my question is how can I flash BIOS with 1.3?

    Hey,
I agree with the user above. BIOS downgrade can only be done from an authorized service provider. So you should get in contact with the guys and ask if they can downgrade the BIOS for you or probably they can send you an older BIOS version via e-mail Just talk with the guys a little bit ;)
But normally newest BIOS version has most bug fixes so I dont think a downgrade is useful

  • Can you downgrade your BIOS?

    Hi,
I have an MSI P55-GD85 board and I just upgraded to BIOS version 1.5 a few days ago.  Just recently I'm having problems with my SSD drives, the writes because slow, like 70Mbps slower in all benchmarks (even real world tests).  I have 2 Vertex 2 60gb running ins RAID 0 (Intel onboard raid).  Unfortunately, I can't confirm (yet) that the BIOS update was the culprit.  Right now, I'm troubleshooting with the OCZ guys and they are suggesting that I secure erase and reformat, if that does not work, I downgrade the BIOS back to 1.4.
So my question is, is there a way to downgrade to 1.4 from 1.5?  What is the easiest and safest method to use?
    Thanks!

Did your unplug your PSU from A/C power to properly >>Clear CMOS<< after the BIOS Update?  If not, you should start with that.

    Hi,
That being the case, there isn't really any option other than to replace the graphics card - which will more than likely resolve this issue.

How can I flash the bios of a MSI kt3 ultra2 without a floppy drive?
I used the msi live update software to download the bios update programe...when I run it gives 2 options dos and windows
but the windows option is greyed out and the dos option requires a floppy drive (mine does not work)..what can I do?

I can tell you what you need to do but unfortunately - not how to do all of it.
You will need to make a bootable CD with the neccessary files on it .- Somewhere on the www you should be able to find the instructions. I have flashed from a CD   with no problems on a K7S5A board . The CD image was available as a complete download and just needed burning to the CD  so - apart from the obvious ( BIOS file , BIOS installer ,command.com,msdos .sys, io.sys)I don't know what else might  be needed on the CD- unfortunately the disk I made is long gone.
I'm sure a search will find what you need to know.
Once you have the disk -just insert in CD Drive - restart and follow the instructions.

  • Portege R700 - Can't update the BIOS

    Hi,
I recently bought a Portege R700 19M and I have downloaded the latest version of the BIOS available in the Toshiba support page and when I run the .exe file, it doesn't work with this message: "The computer is not supported"
And, when I have a look in the HWSetup Toshiba tool, it doesn't display the BIOS version but some weird character (not usual letters) so I can't know which version is installed.
    thank you for your help

I have a similar problem. I have an R700 18Q (Short Model No: PT311E) and my SO is Windows 7 Pro, 64 bits, and when i try to run "BIOS180_EC140.exe" I got a message: "This computer is not supported".
    So, since "BIOS180_EC140.exe" is just an archive file, I have extracted all its content into a folder and these are all the files inside there: autoExec.0409; autoExec.0411; autoExec.vbe; BIO007BT.COM; CHGBIOSF.EXE; EC73V140.BIN; nchgbios2.exe; nchgbios2.sys; NCHGBIOS2x64.SYS; TosPwChk.dll; TosPwChk.lng; TosWshHelper.exe; version.ini.
So and now? What should I run? I have already tried nchgbios2.exe and TosWshHelper.exe, but nothing happens. Finally I have tried CHGBIOSF.exe, but I got the message: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your...."

So you can´t update an GE60 with freedos to UEFI, is that right?
I have Windows 8 on my GE60 freedos und the problem that my GPU won´t boost.
Will this bug be fixed anytime soon?
You cannot update the GE60 that came with FreeDOS to UEFI, correct.
The GE60 does not have a GPU boost function like other models do. It does have a built in GPU boost that is regulated by the GPU, and this was fixed with a recent firmware update (roughly 3 or 4 months ago). You should update to the latest FreeDOS/Win7 bios if you have not yet.

  • Satellite A200 - Cannot downgrade the BIOS to v2.40

    Please Help me.
I bought a brand new toshiba Satellite A200 series laptop with vista home premimum in it.
For some reasons I'm not a big vista fan.
So i downgraded my OS to XP and as i was searching for drivers and all for XP i saw a Bios update for my laptop it was 5.20 which was for XP. While for Vista its 2.40 as per mentioned on website.
Now from here my problems started.
I downloaded that v5.20 bios and updated it.
Soon problems started like laptop gets overheated, it freezes, and sometimes refuse to give performance.
As i was unable to find all my drivers for XP i switched back to Vista with the help of my recovery DVD. But the problem remained the same with Vista also so finally i took my laptop to a Toshiba Service Centre.
They said there is a problem in motherboard so they fixed it but they didn't fixed the Bios.
I still have v5.20 on my machine.
I tried to downgrade to v2.40 but it always shows an error.
Can Anyone pls help me.. I'm able to boot with a USB thumbdrive but i don't have a DOS version of Bios v2.40.
Please if anyone can provide me with my version of bios.
I will be grateful to he/she forever.
    here are my system specs.

Not even this when i buyed the laptop it showed me 749 something as shared Graphic memory now it only shows around 399.
I know this is all because of that Bios update.

This machine is almost useless for me now.
Any help from you people will do.

thanky you very much for ur response and time Raver.
i have the reasons for downgrade i hope u'll understand. Here they are :-
    1. From the very 1st day i upgraded to v5.20 my problems started which led me to take my machine to an ASP.
    2. Problems Started like overheating, freezing, BDOS, and performance degradation.
    3. Shared Video Graphic memory declined to only 399 is this am i suppose to get ??? i remember well that before upgrade to v5.20 it was higher than 749 something. i have a Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 Gfx with 2GB of Ram in my Notebook.
    4. I'm unable to play Good Games, the games lags and its performance disappoints me. before upgrade those games were running smoothly.
All I'm asking u guyz is for a correct version of my bios which is v2.40 if u can provide me that i will be grateful becaose im fed up this v5.20 it is making my notebook a peice of trash day by day.
Please look in this matter and give me some more of ur precious time in searching correct version 2.40 for my notebook

  • How can I update the BIOS without using a CD?

    Hello!
I have recently decided to upgrade my RAM from 2GB to 4GB. After installing, I booted up my computer to find that it would not recognize the new memory. After doing a bit of troubleshooting, I decided to try and update the BIOS, as the version was from 2010. I downloaded the BIOS update boot CD application from lenovo, burned a disc, and on reboot I found that the boot order did not have CD listed on it. Here's the catch: I don't have the supervisor password. This is a hand-me-down laptop, and I have tried to find the password to no avail. This is the current boot order: USB drive, Hard drive.
My question is, can I either create a BIOS update disc using a USB, or update the BIOS some other way?
I understand that it is impossible to recover the supervisor password without having it serviced (which I would rather not do, even if I have to send my RAM back to Crucial)
    My system specs:
    Thinkpad L512
    Bios version: 1.04
    Bios date: 2010-3-26
    Embeded Controller Version: 1.01
    Windows 7 32 bit
    Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the forum!
    Two things here:
    a) If you run System Update, it should offer the latest BIOS for your machine as well. I've never done it on a passworded unit, so it might or might not work but might be worth a shot.
    b) I doubt that the ability of the system to recognize new RAM has anything to do with the BIOS. ThinkPads much older than yours will run 4-8GB RAM with an old BIOS, older than your machine to begin with.
    Good luck.

  • Can I downgrade the software on my iPod touch from 4.2.1 to 4.1

I recently upgraded the software on my 4th generation iPod touch from 4.1 to 4.2.1. Since then I can not use it in my car, the iPod is marked as unreadable. I wish to go back to my previous version of 4.1. Is this possible? I have sync'ed my iPod multiple times since then so I don't think that I have a backup that I can go back to.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions that anybody could give.
    Thank you

I'm sort of in the same position. My iPod been playing up today, so plugged it into my work computer running Windows 7, updated the software thinking this would fix the problem, little did I realise iTunes would wipe all my songs off it - no warning of such a thing, AND I took a back-up. Restored the back up and still nothing.
So I plug the iPod into my personal laptop thats got all my music on, and now, because its on iOS 4.2, iTunes 9.2.1 on my Mac wont recognise the iPod. So, I go to update that version of iTunes to 10.1 - but 'cus I'm on Mac OS X 10.4.11 I cant have iTunes 10.1 - so basically I'm screwed.
I've been trawling the net for about 2 hours now trying to find ways of downgrading the software, and all I seem to be able to find out is that there is no 'legal' way of doing so.
I'm generally a big fan of Apple, but tonight has been an eye opener to their money spinning ways - the only option I can see right now, is to update my OS on my Mac - not looked yet, but I'm guessing not cheap.
Any help on getting my software back to 4.1 greatly appreciated as I've got a fairly recent iPod backup file on my Mac (which should work so long as I can get iTunes 9.2.1 to recognise the iPod).
