Can I download a Hardware Test Disk somewhere?

OK, so I am a PC tech, but my friend asked me to help her with her MacBook that she spilled water on.
Long story short, it now powers on...sometimes, and after a humongous pause. Also, the battery icon has a black 'X' over it (although it works fine).
I have tried all the hard reboot options given, and even took the whole thing apart and back together. Still same problems. (by the way, when it does power on, it beeps somewhere between 95-100 times [hard to keep count that high]).
Now, I want to run the Hardware Test, but I do not have the original disk. Is there somewhere I can download the utility and burn a DVD for that?
Thanks
Tim

No. You need the original discs that came with the computer. There are no downloads. If the owner doesn't have them, she will need to call AppleCare to purchase replacements.
The beeping is usually indicative of problems with the RAM or the RAM slots. The beeping should consist of a number of beeps between 1 and 5, then a pause, then a repeat of the beeps. However, I don't believe they go on continually, so there may be something more seriously wrong on the motherboard.
Since this would not be covered under warranty (if the warranty were still in effect) she would have to pay for the repairs.

  • Can't boot off Apple Hardware Test disk

Can anyone suggest why my laptop won't boot off of its Apple Hardware Test disk anymore? I have not tried it in years, but want to try now. I have the original, and a copy I made years ago, and neither will boot. I can select them at startup disks in that preference pane in OSX, but then it fails to find it, and boots into OSX. I can boot into OS9 on the hard drive. I was able to partially boot off of a different AHT disk from my 12" Albook G4, but it gave the message that I can't use that disk since it is not meant for the Tibook. One idea is that TechTool tells me that "macintosh startup file was absent", and the Help file states:
"The Startup file is intended for use by systems that do not have built-in ROM support for booting from HFS Extended volumes. The first eight extents of the Startup File are stored in the Volume Header. This makes them easy to locate and read into memory. This file contains information used by the computer’s ROM to determine what program will boot the computer. In almost every case, this will be configured to point to the preferred System."
But it does not tell me how to restore this Startup file.
-how can i get my startup file back?
-my computer boots fine off the hard drive, so is this file used only to boot off a CD?
-any ideas why i can't boot off my AHT CD?

Hi, t. (That alias of yours sure is a mouthful.) I think in your shoes I would pose the question to the tech support people at Micromat (TechTool's developer). It's their error message, after all, and they should be able to explain it to you in as much detail as you need. Perhaps they'll shed some light on the original problem in the process.

  • Can Apple Hardware Test disk work when a hard drive has no OS installed yet

I removed a bad original hard drive from a PowerBook G4 12" aluminum notebook. It made clicking sounds as it ran, and would not boot. I replaced it with a 320GB Western Digital HD. I also upgraded the original 512KB memory with 1GB.
Before removing the bad hard drive, I was able to boot just beyond the language selection dialog from a full installation CD (Mac OS X v10.2) while holding the "C" key during power on, but could not install it, of course, on the bad hard drive.
Now with new hard drive replacement in the PowerBook (formatted via fire wire from a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard) and the upgraded memory, I ran a Disk Utility check via fire wire and found the new hard drive in the PowerBook to be in good working order and ready for an OS installation. However I can no longer boot the PowerBook G4 with the full installation CD in the customary manner, getting instead the flashing question mark over the finder folder icon.
I decided to see if there might be some other problem by using a PowerBook G4 Apple Hardware Test disk. Upon booting from the test disk, I get a message that declares the disk will not work with the PowerBook G4 machine.
    What's up?

There's more to my original question than whats on the face of it. Please read more about this below. However, I will still wish to know if an AHT, say an original one if that's important, will do it's thing when no OS is installed.
Pretty sure that I'm NOT using either disk or sets of disks that came with this G4 PB. Included among what I do have are 6 grey disks:
    __PB G4 Software Restore 1
    __PB G4 Software Restore 2
    __PB G4 Software Restore 3
    __PB G4 Mac OS 9 Install v9.2.2
    __PB G4 Mac OS X Install v10.1.4
    __PB G4 Applications
And 2 Jaguar full install DVDs:
    __Mac OS X v10.2 Install Disc 1
    __Mac OS X v10.2 Install Disc 2
I was hoping to be able to find something useful among these disks - if not in a strait forward manner, them by some manner of hacking.
I know how to use my MacBook Pro create a disk image that will house any number of these DVDs. My thought is to create something that can be cloned to the PB G4 via fire wire. I just need to be sure how to daisy chain multiple DVDs in terminal mode, if more than one DVD is required in the cloning process.
I have placed an order for Leopard 10.5 - full installation DVD direct from Apple.
Once received, I will have 14 days to return it unopened. So, I want to be sure this PB G4 is operable before I break the seal on the Leopard package.
Therefore it's not so important that I clone everything from the original installation - just enough to see that the PB G4 boots and runs in Finder. If I can achieve that much, I will advance with Leopard 10.5 when it arrives.
    My *PROCESSOR SPEED* is 1.33GHz
    Other original specs:
    L2 Cache 512 KB
    Memory 512 MB
    Bus Speed 167 MHz
    Boot ROMV 4.8.3f1
    Memory Slot 256 MB DDR-SDRAM

  • Can't get apple hardware test to run.

    Hi,
I'm on a macbook pro late 2008 running 10.6.8 and I can't get apple hardware test to run.
I upgraded with a 10.6.3 disk and there is only one install disk. I insert it restart whilst holding d, nothing happened, restart whilst holding alt + d, again nothing.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

You will need the #2 installation disk (that came with the MBP)  with the Apple Hardware Test instructions on it.
    Ciao.

  • Hardware Test Disk

    Hi all,
I'm having a problem with random freezes. I can boot up with my original start up disk and run disk utlities, ( no problems found) however when trying to boot my hardware test disk a message suggests that the disk is not for my machine. It is original and labeled. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I see that you have figured out that you need the iBook G4 forum instead of this one and cornelius is helping you there.

  • Need a Hardware Test Disk

I need to get a hardware test disk for my Powerbook to check on a speaker hiss/static problem. I can't seem to find where I can order one. I searched the online store but the search comes up empty.

That's the Apple Hardware Test 1.2.3 for 14" PB G3s with FireWire ports and 15" Titanium PB G4s. I don't believe it will work with a 12" Aluminum G4, which requires at least the higher version that originally came with it. The earliest 12" PB G4 came with AHT 2.0.2, and later ones with higher versions.
It may still be possible to order a replacement AHT disk for your machine directly from Apple, by telephone only. Call Customer Relations at 1-800-767-2775 and ask. Have your Powerbook's serial number handy when you call.

  • G5 Hardware Test Disk? - NC Triad

I have a MaC G5 desktop and I am unable to get it to boot. I've been on the phone with Apple Tech Support and we've run all the usual remedies to get the computer to access the hard drive and give me back a desktop. What I'm missing is the G5 Hardware Test Disk. The Tech told me if I can get my hands on a disk, he can get the machine up and running.
Is there anybody in the Triad (Winston Salem, High Point, Greensboro, etc.) who has the G5 Hardware Test Disk disk and would let me borrow it until I can my machine up and running? Please respond...
    Thank you.

Unfortunately, only the G4 AHTs are posted online.
I think TechTool Pro is close to the same, TechTool Deluxe may even work.

    Did you try this:
    1. Insert Install Disk 1.
    2. Restart & hold option key as it start up.
    3. Click Apple Hardware Test when available startup volumes appear.
    4. Click the right arrow.
    5. The Apple Hardware Test main screen should appear.

    Hi,
Is the mac mini g4 spost to come with the hardware test disks?
If so how do I get them?
I did not get it when I got my mac mini?
    Thanks.

I know that booting up while holding the D key with the Install disc in the drive will boot to the Apple Hardware Test on a Macintel, and although I haven't tried that key on my G4 yet, I believe that the proper way to select AHT as the startup volume from the Install disc is to do so from the Startup Manager (which is accessed by holding the Option key during startup) ...

  • Where can I download Apple Hardware Diagnostics for MacBookPro2,1?

My MacBook Pro 17-inch Core 2 Duo (MacBookPro2,1)'s DVD drive appears to be faulty - It treats working DVD's as 'blank'.
I want to run Apple Hardware Diagnostics (AHD) on the machine but (a) I can't find the original DVD for the machine (b) in any event it won't work as the drive is faulty!
I know I can download older versions of AHD at http://www.info.apple.com/support/aht.html but where can I find one for my Mac?
I want to download it and 'restore' it to a hard disc partition so I can boot it from there.
    Any ideas anyone?

Every Mac model has its own components different than any other, and the Apple Hardware Test is unique to each model. A handful of models share one AHT. A pile of them are available for download but are obscured behind a non-obvious naming convention. A partial list is here and here. Unfortunately Apple simply doesn't make it easy to figure out how to restore this.
What I've learned is that pretty much all intel Macs before 10.7 did have AHT preloaded on the drive, found in hidden folder /System/Library/CoreServices/.dianostics. If you reformat the drive and reinstall, this is not reinstalled. And if you encrypt the drive with File Vault 2 it would be unavailable in any case. With 10.7 and newer hardware, the AHT is stuffed into an AHTxx.dmg file and found on the Recovery HD volume, also in a hidden directory. So it can still be used when FV2 encryption is enabled.
Since install disks are gone, I don't actually know how current Mac owners are supposed to get this restored, however also since that time, Apple has moved to firmware that can load the proper version of AHT via option-D on boot with a wired or wireless internet connection. It doesn't permanently download this to disk, the firmware downloads and runs it, and upon reboot it's gone again.
So the gist is, once you've lost the installed version of AHT, you either need the AHT disk that came with your computer or buy one from Apple or go to an Apple store and they'll run it for you. Or you have a newer Mac with firmware that can talk to Apple directly (pretty much anything 2010 and newer) over the internet.

  • Lost my Hardware Test disk!  Options?  Want to test RAM...

So my dual 2.0 G5 (first version) is starting to run really sloooow. Lots of pinwheel, long time to move between apps, etc. I'm wondering if the RAM is finally pooping out on me. So, I'm looking to run a looped Hardware Test overnight, to see what it may find.
Only one problem...I CAN'T FIND MY INSTALL DISK! I've got the 2nd disk here, but the 1st one isn't in the pack. Of course, it has the Hardware Test on it. I've got BOTH disks from my G4 PowerBook, but the G5 won't boot from these disks.
Any options here? Is there a place I can go to download this disk, or request another? Are there other recommended applications to test my RAM on this machine? I'd like to figure out what's causing it to bog down, as it's starting to get really annoying.

Are you saying that 2GB should be ok...
I'm trying to say that 2GB isn't much anymore, just for even Browsing the Internet.
My G5 came with 2 GB, tested it on my Dial-up even though I had 8 more GB already waiting before I got the G5... despite 2GB saying there was plenty of free RAM, upping to 10GB made everything faster... My Big Ataris handle a 2 button mouse & a full Keyboard with 40+ iterations of the F Keys in 100 Bytes, last Mac KB update was 32MB, last Mouse update was 80MB, things have gone exponentially backwards.

  • Hardware test disk image

my emac purchased second hand didn't come with hardware test CD. I know that repairers and genius types can download these as disk images. Is there a way for a mere user such as myself to get the hardware test. It seems like it would be quite a benign thing to download yet it doesn't seem to be readily available. Am I missing something?

You have the option to get in touch with 1-800-MY APPLE and for a fee they will replace your Disc set.
Explain that you purchased the eMac 2nd hand and it did not come with the disc's but the Operating System is installed on your machine.
Or you can check with one of the many Mac Vendors to buy a Full Retail Version of Tiger 10.4
    http://www.macmall.com
    comes to mind.
Also, don't overlook the first line of defense by using the utilities that come with the operating system,
This link will provide you with several options for repair until you get the Operating System's Disc's.

  • Can't perform Apple Hardware Test of any kind

I can't perform an Apple Hardware Test – on a late 2008 MBP – from original software disk, because my superdrive (matshita dvd-ram uj-868) has long been broke.
Whenever I insert any kind of disk, it doesn't even read neither the machine recongnizes it and it's really a **** of a bum to eject it (when lucky I manage to remove it with force-eject).

  • Where can I download Apple Hardware Diagnostics for my MacBook Pro ?

I have a problem of Mac freezing with an alarm sound forcing me to shut down, and someone suggests that I run an Apple Hardware Test. But I have no such CD. Do you know wether such an application can be downloaded for a MacBook Pro (Mac Os X Lion) ?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

    Thank you very much !
I was surprised not to have a CD for AHT. But if it is already included in the MacBook, it's fine.
