You can download purchases from itunes as long as they still carry them. they may not be available forever.
All of your music and everything esle should be on your computer and backed up with your regular backup copy of your computer.
You can download most itunes purchases on ipad, ipod touch and iphone.
I see no reason to have an ipod and an iphone.
If your ipad/iphone/ipod crash you would have to restore using itunes on your computer.
I would not reccommend using an iphone ipod/ipad without a computer.

I am searching for games that will download on an older iPod. Purchased two 2nd generation iPods on Ebay and am having trouble getting any games that are compatabile. Are there any still out there. Purchased these for 2 grandchildren. Help. Not only are there games, how do I download them. Can I do it from my computer? They are there, but it's not easy to find these days. At least your iPod touch can run iOS 4.2. My old original iPhone can only run up to iPhone OS 3.1.3...
I used to be able to go into an app category in iTunes (on the computer), and sort the listing by release date, newest to oldest. Then, I could go to the end of the list, and the older apps/games would be the ones that worked with the older hardware and iOS versions. However, this method does not seem to work well anymore. The lists do not appear to go back far enough, so the apps at the end of the list are still fairly new.
I found an app recently. It's called VintApps. You can go to the App Store using iTunes on the computer and search for it. It costs 99 cents. I can set it to "filter" based on iOS limitation (and other factors). I can then browse in app categories (in the app), and it shows me lists based on the criteria. Selecting an app from the list provides its description. This lets me find apps that work with 3.1.3 (or 4.2 in your case)
Because older devices are slower (with a small screen), what I do is use VintApps on my iPhone to find something that looks interesting. Then, I use iTunes on my Mac to find that app in the App Store. If it looks good, I get it there (using my computer's iTunes) and sync it to my iPhone.

Why not just buy another Apple USB dock connector cable from somewhere such as Amazon? You (or your wife's sister) can get one used or brand new for pretty cheap.

You will need to use a computer (or use a friend's computer or take it into the Apple Store) to update the iPad. Once you have updated it to iOS 5, then you will be able to get future updates without a computer.

Yes I assume so, I was just wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to how. I'm running version 10.6.8 on a macbook, as far as I can see there's no reason why it wouldn't work.
What happens is when I connect iPhone 3GS it alerts me that the iOS5 software is available, but that itunes 10.5 needs to be downloaded first. I click through to start the download for itunes, then it runs software update, which says that my software is up to date, and that's as far as I seem to be able to go. The version of itunes that I am currently running is 10.2.1, and because I can't update itunes, I can't get the ios5 software. No error messages or anything else, just says my software is up to date, when it isn't.
Any thoughts/help much appreciated!

Actually it's as smiple as plugging in the iPod and registering it, this will be done by a step by step dialog box when you first plug it in. After that it will show up in your device list on the left side. Just drag the song from the music library in iTunes to the iPod device that is his. You can drag single songs, complete albums or even complete genres. If it is a iTouch you get him, you can also click the music tab on the iTouch device in iTunes when you plug it in and you can just check off artist names or just certain albums. Also on a iTouch on the summary screen you can click the sync with iTouch over Wi-Fi check box and you will no longer have to plug it to the computer to sync. Also, since they are two different devices the music on one will not affect the music on another. This goes for any iOS device, iPods, iTouches, iPhones, and iPads.

Also, all the other music I had on my ipod is gone, wasn't much as I use this mostly to listen to audiobooks. But the only music album there is the free U2 one Apple gave out a while back. So I'm in it even worse than you right now as I have a 2 day trip planned and was adding more books to my selection, to listen while driving. But try what I told you above. If it does put it on your ipod, you can delete it and "fix" the info in iTunes, then transfer it back.
