Can I drag and drop songs into my playlists or is that over?

Without that tool I'm buying literally a tenth of the music that I used to - because I don't want to have to buy then sort. I always did it the other way around. Stuck a song in my list. Listened more carefully later. Then purchased. Why is innovation always about the erasure of old features rather than the adding of new tools? VIP lists are gone. I can't see everyone else's playlists anymore and use them to discover new music. It drives me nuts. I'm almost done with Itunes after years of loyalty. Now I just listen to my Ipod for old stuff and use Spotify for discovering new music. Too bad. I have loved my Ipod very much!

Update: I seem to have fixed the problem! I went to the "summary" section of my iPod after clicking on the device on the left side of iTunes. I checked the box that allowed me to "manually manage music and videos" and applied this option. The songs are syncing! And, yay, they're playing on my iPod now! Hopefully, this helps anyone else who might have this problem. There might be other issues, but this is working for now.

I can't seem to drag and drop songs from my itunes library into a new playlist in order to burn a cd. Any suggestions? I've tried closing out and restarting but that didn't work. thanks!

You may have clicked one of the categories that reordered your sonds (ie Name or Artist). This make is override any drag and drop. To allow drag & drop within a playlist:
Look near the top at the Title of your playlist
Click on the far left hand column (probably has numbers in it). This organinzed songs by the numbers listed there instead of by Name or Artist or whatever....
Now you should be able to drag & drop.

Almost certainly, the reason no one understands your issues is because you haven't explained them well enough.

Have you checked to make sure that the Playlist you are trying to add to is a Regular Playlist...
and not a Smart Playlist...
or a Playlist Folder...
In addition to all of this, the original question was asked 18 months ago, before iTunes 11. So is your problem that you cannot work out how to create a new playlist? For example, at which point do you get stuck with this new Playlist, creating it, or adding to it?

Had to reinstall iTunes after bad virus and now when I drag and drop song into custom playlist it won't added. No green appears, instead just the circle with slash. What's going on? a fix? Michael

I had to reformat after a bad virus and reinstall iTunes. Now when I try to drag and drop a song into a custom playlist, it won't add the song. Instead of the green + that is supposed to appear, it just shows the circle with cross slash. I created numerous playlist before and never ran into this problem. Any suggestions on how to fix it? OK, so I have now found that this is apparently normal for iTunes, to only accept mpeg 4 movie files, all the searching I did before I must have worded it wrong because I couldn't find anything about this, incredibly. Had been looking for why iTunes won't take all the files it previously did, like if it had been changed, and it hasn't, it's allegedly always taken only mpeg 4 files. Also I had been searching for why iTunes crashes every time I try and add/import anything but mpeg 4 files, and even sometimes with mpeg 4 files. That isn't normal, it's supposed to just do nothing apparently as I've just found out. So for these reasons I didn't find the answer despite my searching all over the web.
So I guess that answers my own question now, but I'm still perplexed as to why I absolutely, definitely, without any doubt, had several hundred movies of a few different video file types loaded, accessible and playable in my iTunes library that everything here claims iTunes never accepted. It apparently shouldn't have been possible for me to have done this, but for probably 10 years it's been this way.
Perhaps since I don't remember adding these files to iTunes anymore recently than maybe 6 or 7 years ago, the iTunes back then did accept all kinds of file types? Or could I have somehow had some video codecs or software that expanded the capability of my movie players like Quicktime Player that unwittingly also allowed iTunes to take those files as well? All I know is somehow it worked! So now my question is how did I have it working before, so that maybe I can make it work again.

As I often do, I went to drag four new files into a playlist in iTunes and suddenly they will not go in. I just get that circle with a diagonal line across indicating that this is not possible.

Try to drag them directly to "Music" or "Movies" or whatever, rather than a specific playlist. THEN drag them to the playlist --
Given your other issues, sounds like you iTunes library might be corrupt...

I got this problem since I updated iTunes to latest version, I'm running Windows 7 32 bits and i don't freaking have a Wacom tablet

I found the problem. I have VMware fusion that is hosting Window XP on the iMac. When the fusion is running the CD player is not seen in OS. By quitting Fusion I can now insert a CD and the disk icon appears on the OS screen. Now I can bring up iTunes and import the audio and continue as before. The one exception is I cannot bring in a photo of the album cover as before I have to drag the photo out of iPhoto and onto the desk top. Then I can drag it into the artwork patch in the iTunes/ info window.

I recently installed iTunes 4.3.5 and can't drag and drop music into my 'music library' anymore. Every time I try to drag the music from a folder into the library, that little circle with the line thru it comes up (not allowed symbol). I've been using iTunes for years and am pretty computer savvy... I have no idea what the problem is. The only way I can add music right now is if I go to File>Add File to Library and that takes way too long, especially when adding 20-30 songs. I am using Windows 7 and I have an iPhone 4. Please help! This is extremely frustrating.

I am dragging them from iTunes, and it has never been an issue before. I have used AAC, MP3, and AIFF before and never had an issue.

Same with me, Lion is a cool OS but the updates iTunes has nothing but problems. I can't even drag song to my desktop. When you go in to sync with your iPhone, you need to go to the music tab and select "manually manage music"

Yes! This is really annoying. I don't know why they couldn't keep the functionality from the old version. The more I use the new iTunes the less I like it.

Actually I have two questions. I just updated from Leopard to snow leopard. Now when I import songs, it says "Do you want to import to burn playlist?" I click "yes". Then when it is finished copying, I go to "playlists" on the top of the screen and click on the "burn playlist" and it says there are no items. Where did the songs go. I would like to burn a playlist that I imported this way. I haven't tried arranging songs in the order I want them yet, but now see that is an issue also. I also used to see a list of my playlists on the left side of the screen and the songs within each of those playlists when I clicked on them and easily could drag and drop songs from one playlist to another. How do I do the same functions that I used to do before I updated? Does this update make it impossible to do the same functions as before? Where can I find a "manual" of sorts to direct me to explain this new format? If there is no way to do these things, I will have to say that I want my old iTunes back. Can I do so??? Actually, the only reason I updated was so that I could play pix and movies from my camera into iPhoto. When I did so, it said I had to update other programs to get iPhoto to work. Unable to drag and drop songs from library into playlists, however I can drop them above or below playlists. That is no help in editing playlists! Seems to be after last iTunes up date.

Can't drag and drop songs...

So I just got my daughter her first iPod (shuffle), and wanted to put some songs onto it. However, when I go to populate a new playlist for her shuffle to autofill from, I find that I cannot drag and drop songs at all. I have done this as recently as last week with a nano and iPod touch, but now it doesn't work at all. I can't even change the order of songs in my playlists that have already been created. I've checked for updates and it looks like I have the most recent version of everything. I've tried restarting, etc, and the same thing keeps happening. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
