Can I dual boot a macbook pro running Mavericks with Snow Leopard?

I just got a Macbook Pro with quad core i7 with osx 10.9.5 but need to run software that will not run on a system higher that 10.6.8. How can I partition the drive so that I can install these?

There have been discussions in ASC about using a virtualization software to then
run an older 'server version' of Snow Leopard on a partition within a newer Mac...
You can still buy the Server version of Snow Leopard from Apple. Not sure which
virtualization software or utility you'd need to set it up, though; or if you'd also need
to use BootCamp to set-aside a partition as well.
My antiques don't have a feel that sort of thing...
Good luck & happy computing!

Hi Carolyn, thanks for your quick reply. First thing I did before posting my question was to check the system requirements for Creative Suite, both on Apple and Adobe's websites. But I am however confused about the difference between "Multicore Intel processor" vs "Core 2 Duo", and keep hearing stories about CS5 not working properly.

While the 2011 MBP's that shipped with Lion can be made to run Snow Leopard as long as you have the appropriate installer disk for 10.6.7 or later, yours is a 2012 MBP and most likely can never be made to run Snow Leopard because the necessary hardware support drivers (e.g., USB 3.0 support) simply aren't a part of that OS.

  • Can I use boot camp or other virtualization software with Snow Leopard Server?

Can I use boot camp or other virtualization software with Snow Leopard Server?

Boot Camp is not virtualization; it boots Windows natively on the Mac hardware. So Boot Camp would be irrelevant to running Snow Leopard Server. Parallels and VMWare Fusion both have at least "experimental" support for running Snow Leopard Server in a virtual machine on Mac OS X, though I don't know how robust it is as of this time. You might ask for opinions on the Parallels or VMWare forums.

  • Airport not maintaining internet connection on my D-link router with Macbook Pro 5.5 with Snow leopard

Airport keeps throwing me out of internet connection on my D-link router with Macbook Pro 5.5 with Snow leopard. Pls if anyone has a solution to this then let me know

I'm using my PC notebook because connecting with my iMac is IMPOSSIBLE!!! If I get connected at all, it's worse than dial-up speed.
We are wireless via a D-Link DIR-625 (new) -- but was having some problems before with a netgear. Problem much worse now. My computers are not the primary computers. My sister gets that coin toss. She is a PC user. I share with her using WPA2. When the iMac "wakes" the signal bands are strong, but when I go to a page I lose all signal strength. And several times a day I get a message indicating an error joining the network -- arghhhhh -- HELP!
Is the problem with D-Link or Mac? Thanks for any help.

  • Unable to bind MacBook Pro (running 10.6 - Snow Leopard ) to Windows Server 2003 domain

Hi there, I've been working on this problem for a few hours now (and a few hours last Thursday) and don't feel I'm getting anywhere, so I'm reaching out for help....
My organisation has just purchased a new MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6) and as a Technical Support Engineer I have been asked to configure it for an end user.
I am currently trying to join it to our corporate domain, which is a Windows Server 2003 domain operating at the Windows Server 2003 Native domain functional level.
The MacBook is configured to use DHCP, and has been assigned valid IP address, DNS servers etc by the DHCP server. It can resolve all names on our network, including the names of our domain controllers. When I use nslookup to resolve the name of the domain "my_domain.local" it returns a list of DC's on the domain, which would indicate to me that name resolution is working perfectly. It is using our primary DNS server, 'Ponus' to resolve these names - Ponus is also the Domain Controller in this site.
To attempt to join the MacBook to the domain I have created a computer account for it on the domain, in the Computers container. I have gone into System/Library/Core Services and run the Directory Utility.
In the directory Utility I have ticked Active Directory and clicked on it to edit. The 'Forest' field is greyed out and set to 'Automatic', in the 'Domain' field I have entered my_domain.local, which is the FQDN of my domain. I click Bind and when prompted enter my Domain Admin username and password (in the 'Create Computer Account in:' field it displays correctly as CN=Computers,DC=my_domain,DC=local.)
When I click OK I get the message: Invalid domain. An invalid Domain and Forest combination was specified. You should enter a fully qualified DNS name for the domain and forest (e.g., ads.company.com).
I have attempted writing the domain as my_domain.local, my_domain.local., MY_DOMAIN.LOCAL and MY_DOMAIN.LOCAL. but I get the same error each time. I have checked and rechecked DNS is resolving OK, and cannot see why it cannot find the Domain and Forest from the FQDN that I am entering. Even so I tried creating records in the hosts file on the MacBook to point to the main Domain Controller at this site (Ponus) but this didn't change anything.
I have seen a few people report the same issue online but the responses tend to fizzle out before anyone gets to the bottom of it. I have seen some indication that people with an understore (_) in their domain name, or with a .local domain name may experience issues with joining Mac hosts, however these details are very vague and if true there must be a workaround.
If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it, I'm running out of time to complete this work and have run out of things to try.
I have an inkling that this is due to the Mac for some reason not reading the SRV records for the DCs and LDAP in DNS, or to do with the Mac looking only at one SRV record (ie. there is one for a new DC that we haven't deployed yet), not being able to reach this and giving up, but I'm clutching at straws really with my limited knowledge of the Macs process for joining the domain.
    Many many thanks,

    Hi there,
A simple suggestion , please make sure both MacBook Pro clock and the server clock are the same meaning the hour/Min/ sec both should match. A least difference of 3 seconds is fine.
I had faced this problem in many place and only solution was to match the time and it will bind immediatly.

  • Macbook Pro 2,2 with Snow Leopard not Mavericks compatible ?

I have a Core 2 Duo 15" Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard.  I was under impression Mavericks would run on Snow Leopard machines.   Tried to download it and it said Machine not compatible.   Then it listed compatible machines and it showed 15" MacBook Pro.   What gives?

  • Can MacBook Pro (Aug 2007) with Snow Leopard support A2DP headsets?

Hi I have a MacBook Pro (Generation 3,1) bought in August 2007 (hence NOT Late 2007 model) and currently running Snow Leopard. I'm interested in getting myself a Logitech Bluetooth Wireless Headset, but it only supports devices with A2DP Bluetooth profile, namely recent iPhones, iPads and iPod touches.
I was wondering if it could also work with my MacBook Pro in its current state and configuration? Many thanks if anyone could help.

  • Wireless network Issue on MacBook Pro Duo (original) with Snow Leopard

    Hello all,
I have searched the forums and tried many solutions to no avail. I have the original Macbook Pro 2.16 Core Duo running 10.6.6. Here is the problem:
When I am at home, I have moderate trouble with my wireless. My signal/noise is 78 dPm/94 dPm. However, when I am at school my computer cannot even crawl on the internet unless it is in between classes when the network activity is low.
My school is a small grad school of only about 250 people, and 80% of the people in my class have newer Apples. No other person seems to be experiencing my problem. I can watch the people beside me surfing away on newer MacBooks while my connection times out almost every time.
It seems that everyone's connections drown my connection out. However, nobody else is experiencing my problem. It is if I am the last kid in the lunch line and nothing is left for me.
If there is any more information I need to provide, please do not hesitate to ask. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

"when I am at school my computer cannot even crawl on the internet unless it is in between classes when the network activity is low."
Make sure you are on the correct network if you have not already done so.
Repair permissions and restart your computer. If your computer has been in "sleep" mode for a few days, restart it. You really should restart your computer at least _"once a day"_ to refresh it.
"I have attempted to use the Airport Utility, *however, it detects nothing* and will not let me manually configure anything."
Is the light green on the router you are using? Apple has several Airport routers. Which one do you have?
After doing 1 through 5, did you restart your computer afterwards?

  • Dual Boot Ubuntu Macbook Pro 8,1

I have learned through trial and error (mostly error) that the newest Macbook Pro (early 2011 8,1) has a problem with ubuntu liveCDs and will not boot from them. I want to get Ubuntu running primarily so I can root my android phone. As of now I have Ubuntu 11.10 running on a virtual machine with VirtualBox but virtual machines don't work for rooting purposes. Is there still a way to dual boot a Macbook Pro 8,1 with Ubuntu?

Ubuntu Live CD's are designed for generic PC machines, not Mac's with a GUID Partition Table and EFI.
Booting and installing Ubuntu on a Mac can brick the machine, as the header on the GPT has a partial MBR like Windows full MBR, so it's mistaken for one and attmepts to install.
Also Linux requires two partitions, one a swap partition which it mistakes the hidden EFI partiton for that.
Getting a Lion based Mac to dual boot Linux is much harder than Snow Leopard, as there is a new hidden Lion Recovery Partiiton to deal with, also on the newer 2011 Mac's with recent firmware updates has caused all sorts of headaches for the required rEFIt needed (hasn't been updated) and creating two more partitions that Linux requires.
If you had a pre 2011 Mac and no Lion, just Snow Leopard, I would say no problem.
A much better option for you is to get a inexpensive machine and install Linux on it, or buy one already installed, until this Lion buisness settles down and urber geeks tweek Linux on Mac's again, but right now it's appearing Apple has charted a course for a closed operating system like a iPhone/iPad and that doesn't generate a whole lot of interest in running Linux on Mac's.

  • Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive.

Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

Have a MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 Leopard.  Can I just download 10.6.8 Snow Leopard so I can wifi sync with iPhone and iPad?

    To expand on Niels post...
First you need to check that your current Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Specs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If it does... then you need to Purchase and Install the Snow Leopard Disc,
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
( It should be noted that Apple will send paid MobileMe members the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD for free.)

  • I am asked to Sign in with my Apple ID each time I boot my Macbook pro running the current and updated version of Yosemite

Each time I boot my Macbook Pro running a currently patched version of Yosemite I am asked to "Sign in with my Apple ID."  After that I have to approve the use of Find My Mac, and then I have to agree to the Terms and conditions of Use.   This is very annoying since I use Bootcamp a lot and it adds a fair effort to the reboot process.   Any thoughts?
Some additional clues that may or may not have bearing on this.
Once I am booted into Yosemite completely, if I open Safari (also current version)  I am told my Safari Extensions have been migrated and I have to re-enable each one individually.   They have all been disabled.   This will occur each time I completely close Safari and reopen it.
I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions everyone!   Thanks in advance.

    Hi chc517,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on a couple things about your specific configuration. The message you mentioned about the disk being encrypted would seem to indicate that you may have File Vault enabled. If that is the case and you are having a login issue, you would need to use the File Vault recovery key to reset your login password instead of your Apple ID, as noted in the following article:
OS X Yosemite: FileVault recovery key

  • I have a new Macbook Pro running Mavericks and safari consistently freezes. It takes several 'return/enter' presses to get to the page I requested. I have seen other comments and replies on how to fix (clear cache, clear extensions/plug-ins), to no avail.

I have a new macbook pro running mavericks and only using Safari as my browser.  75% of my url requests are 'hung up' and freeze.  I have seen other posts and have tried to clear cache, reset safari, remove extensions, but to no avail.
    Any recommendations?

If it works in a new user account, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
