Can I embed Java in a .pdf?

As the title asks...
I am wondering if it is possible to embed a Java app into a pdf?
If so, can someone point me towards some documentation on how to?

Preview does a nice job of embedding fonts. You can open a pdf with non-embedded fonts in Preview and then print->save as pdf creates one with fonts embedded. I had seen this in MacOSX Hints originally and it works for me.
For seeing what fonts are embedded (or not), pdffonts is a very nice utility, which i think now comes with poppler, or you can build from their git.

Can I embed java app in flash (mp3 recorder)

I need to provide an mp3 recorder from the user's sound card functionality to a flash application. It will be strictly a web app hosted on a server, not an install. User's may or may not have admin priviledges.
I am mostly a vb guy so I was wondering if this could be accomplished with Java, if so how many MS security windows will the user need to wade through?

It sounds like an applet is what you want, but I have no idea if an applet can be embedded or communicate with flash. Try googling "embed applet in flash" or something to that effect.
How much of this sound card functionality do you need to use in java? Java has a separation between the software and the hardware, so unless you have a library already, it will be hard to access native functionality.

I need some info how I can put things like key words, description of the file and the like permanently in the file to let it 'travel' in the file everywhere, no matter what the OS is. I guess I should use Properties 'path' but it resembles Windows system properties, so I'm not sure. Moreover, there's so little about it in manuals....
Once I've done with it, can it be read just by Adobe Reader?
And one important thing more: is there any inner search engine inside Acrobat XI to search the files by key words and other similar metadata criteria or I'm solely dependant on the OS search function?

Thanks for the link - it sounds highly specialised, but simple experiments of opening a Properties Windows and putting some description notes and author or key word is readable by Acrobat reader or the system search engine so maybe it's not really complicated - mind you, I don't mean right-clicking on the file where options are poor and probably thode of the OS but Preferences edition after opening the document in Acrobat XI Pro - I hope this one is of Adobe and maybe I won't need Bridge to read it I know in the suggested thread it's a problem of graphics metadata within the pdf file....

I have a word document of the product, which I am updating for next product release. However, there are some excel, word, and pdf files embedded within a word document. When I double click these embedded files in word, these files open in a new window. However, we deliver documentation to the customer in the pdf format. Therefore, when I am converting the word document in the pdf format, only an icon of the embedded file is displayed and the files do not open in a new window. Can someone let me know how can I embed these files (in word, excel, and pdf format) in a pdf document?

You must attach them to the PDF file after it is created. You cannot embed file attachments onto a page as you can with Word.

3D PDFs are quite rare, and I've never actually viewed one, even though I work with PDFs all the time.
However, I'm certain that InDesign has no concept of 3D artwork. Most images are not embedded but are linked.
For these reasons, I think it would impossible for you to place it and export it, preserving the 3D.

I know i shouldnt compare, but in Articulate Story Line, you are able to add 'resourses' into the project which sit alongside the eLearning to provide further reading.
Can you do this in Captivate? but without it linking to an external sourse such as local or shared drive?

I'm not a Cp expert, but it seems to me that there's no sense in simply trying to stick a pdf document in the Scorm package. What good would that do? The file would be in the package, but that doesn't mean it would be 'embedded in the project' in any meaningful sense of the term.
I don't know of any way to embed a pdf document directly into a Cp project. But couldn't you simply convert the pdf file into an image (jpeg or gif)? This you could easily insert in your project. It would be inserted as a standard object. And then you could do all the nice things that you can do with any object: put it on slide to be accessed only if the participant wants to view it; use effects so that it enters nicely; add annotation . . . the sky's the limit.
Does this help at all, or am I on the wrong track?

Can I embed a PDF file within a Pages document?

I am working with Pages '09 and would like to embed a rather long PDF document file into my Pages text. I want the reader to be able to click on the PDF file and have it open so that the reader can gather more information on the subject without making the actual Pages document text any longer. I don't want the PDF file to be an external link that sends the reader away from the document -- I want to know if I can embed the PDF file WITHIN the pages document and have it open only when clicked. I don't think I can do this. Thanks.

Is it possible to embed fonts into the PDF outputs created with reports 6i? If so, where is there information on how to do this for 6i?

As you say, you cannot generate a PDF directly with the embedded font, but I discovered a trick:
Use the IX library config file to embed the font in the postscript output when reports runs, then convert the postscript into PDF with an embed fonts parameter to ps2pdf or ghostscript:
ps2pdf -dEmbedAllFonts=true reports_output.ps
This will create a PDF with the embeded font, and with the IX library, you can use TTF fonts.
Can this command be executed somehow automatically by pasta or IX after the report finishes?

The problem is defining what it even means to “embed” a PDF file in the body of an e-mail, especially if you are dealing with a multiple page PDF file.
E-mail is either pure text, rich text (something akin to RTF in Word), or HTML. PDF is not compatible with any of these. Thus, to embed a PDF file, something has to be converted and that means the PDF would be converted to a less graphically rich raster format. But is that what you would really want?
I think that the MacOS and iOS e-mail clients do under some circumstances place an attached PDF file within HTML segments and by clicking on same, you get the equivalent of extracting the full PDF file, but I have no real experience with that.
Another alternative is HTML with a proxy image with a hyperlink to an external PDF file that is invoked when you click on the hyperlink.
Perhaps you can explain what you are really trying to accomplish and what the recipient of such an e-mail's actual experience would be?

If you use Java-plugin, you can embed Java3D in a web page.

well, in my experience 20mb are quite large for an applet. also take into account that you need a certain jvm that supports this type of application (my guess is that internet explorers native vm isnt an option)
i personally would tend to deliver the functionality via java webstart (look at the sunsite):so you can centrally manage the software, download it once and opertae an application on your client (i mean an APPLICATION and not an applet)
regarding 2: well but there is NO bibean service in ias: so you have to open the former mentioned jdbc connection to the olap service from your client
for the availability: you have to check with the pm team
in the meantime: what about the following approach: give power users a java application and lightweight or random users a handy html client ?

Best audio format to embed for export to pdf?

Hello, I was wondering what format for audio file would be best to embed for exporting to pdf. I want to embed the audio file in a button, for playback on mouseover in the exported pdf. Previously, when I had CS3, I actually had to convert my mp3s to avi files, as (believe it or not) that turned out to be the only format that would play back properly with a toolbar in the pdf, and only after I changed the media player (from quicktime to flash) for EACH audio file in the pdf. It was a headache trying to embed hundreds of audio files and I'm just wondering if CS5 has improved.

Steve, that's (if I remember right) why I had to convert my mp3s to avi when I used CS3; because when I played them back in the exported pdf there was no controller-- but there was for avi. The problem I then had was with Acrobat/reader, which had quicktime set as the default player, so when I clicked the button to play the audio (avi) file, the pdf froze. This I solved by changing the default player FOR EACH audio file in the document (there were over 400) to adobe flash player; and because the audio was avi, as you say, a nice controller appeared, which disappeared once the audio finished. This was an OK workaround, if it wasn't for the fact that because I was using the flash player, the interactive pdf couldn't be used by mac users-- which many of the ebook's readers are. D'oh! So now I'm thinking to just stick with the mp3 format, now that Indesign can handle mp3s, and as you say, create buttons for stop and playback; this also solves the problem of having to post-export adjust the player settings for each file, which is not very fun, because when you edit the indesign document for future versions, it's kind of an annoyance to import pages to replace pages in the pdf without replacing the audio files. Anyway. Steve thank you for thinking out the finer details of my issue; I appreciate it and will have a go at making buttons, and let you know how that goes for such an interactive pdf. Thanks also Bob for the reply.
