Can I Escape my Cable Company with Internet TV?

I just checked my cable bill today after our free trial of a DVR box from our cable company, and while the service has been excellent (they also have my phone and internet), at $67 a month plus tax and service fees for TV alone, I could buy a whole bunch of equipment and still save some $$. My son doesn't have cable tv but watches hulu for most shows.
I was wondering what the possibilities are, what equipment I'd need, and what are the potential pitfalls of going internet tv and getting the signal to 1 HiDef TV and 2 CRT type tvs (no digital receivers on those).
The latest issue of MacWorld says that the Apple TV interface isn't quite all it is cracked up to be and there are elegato tv thingies on sale at OWC, but I have to confess, although I've used Macs since 1984, I have never bothered to investigate the technology for TV so it is Greek to me. I was not enthused about the idea of using my business computer for storing, even temporarily, huge video files on the HD....
I believe my HiDef TV will receive digital signals from Pittsburgh stations, because before I installed cable, I picked up OTA stations, but that was before the switch, so I don't know for a fact whether that was digital or regular broadcast... That was 2 years ago...
I guess what I'm not sure about mostly is creating a the multi floor setup for my particular situation. My cable company provides me with one cable modem in the basement. The rest of the coax cables are set to stream the HD and Analog signals to the other jacks in the house. (my older TVs -one in the basement and one on the second floor-are SD and pre digital. They can see the Analog signals, but the cable company sells boxes to allow the tv's to get digital and hd signals IF I wanted to pay for them.)
My Setup: I have my computer, router and cable modem box in the basement and one analog tv in another room in the basement, the HD TV is on the 1st floor and I have one analog tv on the second floor (2 floors away from my computer).
I assume that the Apple TV is wireless and perhaps can get a signal from the basement through the floor, but how would I wire up the 2 analogs, even if they would work with the Apple TV... I assume both the Apple TV and the Elegato system works through an internet attachment through a computer, or does the Elegato pull signal from the cable company and make is usable on conputer (but not a TV)...?
Would you, could you, run the signals from the computer back up the coax somehow and feed it to the other TVs?
Right now, with phone, internet, and tv on the same coax system, I can't lose one to save money on the other

0r does the Elegato pull signal from the cable company and make is usable on conputer
Yes. The El Gato devices are for getting content from an antenna or cable connection into the computer. If you want to bring OTA television broadcasts into your computer, a device like those made by El Gato might be of interest to you.
The Apple TV cannot (without hacking) access content other than from the iTunes Store, so it would not be useful for getting shows from other sources such as Hulu. You'd therefore need to figure out how to connect your computer(s) to your various TVs. Working out all the various distribution issues involved in HDMI and analog would probably be better taken up on an AV-related from such as the AV Science Forum.
As to the "pitfalls" of dropping your cable service, the largest pitfall is that though a number of TV shows have been made available on the Internet, by no means have all, or even a significant percentage, of the available shows been made available for streaming or download. So before you drop your cable service, you'll want to investigate whether or not the shows you care about are available somewhere on the Internet, at a price that you deem reasonable (some are made available for free by including commercials but some you have to pay per episode).
Another thing to consider; you may find that you're getting a "package" deal if you, as you indicate, have TV, Internet and phone all from the cable company and that if you drop one service, the price on the others will go up. This may make dropping TV service less attractive, so be sure to check that out.
Hope this helps.

  • I have BIS but can't send/receive email, surf with internet browser

i have BB Curve 8520. My BIS was running smoothly (sending and receiving emails real time and surfing the net through BIS), until i noticed when i tried to reply to an email that came in, it won't send. i noticed that it's fluctuating. i was able to send the email after a few minutes... then a few minutes later, i received a replied email from my friend, and when i tried to send my reply, i wasn't able to. also, i can't surf using the browser with the "internet browser" as default. i tried using my wifi and then suddenly all my emails started coming in, all emails that were not able to go through hours ago. my big question was why do i need to turn on wifi just to receive emails. but since i had my BIS for 2 months now, i can send and receive emails and surf through BIS itself without turning on the wifi.  also, i can't use any of my apps like facebook, twitter, yahoo messenger, etc.  They used to work fine with BIS... but now, i have to turn on the wifi connection, so i could log in with them.  aren't these supposed to be running through BIS only?
I have GPRS on top, not gprs.
so, i wiped out my BB and deleted all third party apps. when this was done, i received emails telling me "Your handheld has been registered with the wireless network" and even got "Activation Server" emails telling me that the emails that i have previously set up are now up and running. so i thought my BB is now ok.. i tried surfing, it was okay. after like about 5 minutes, it was down again. tried sending email but can't... i turned on the wifi and boom! the emails started coming in again.
i have the Host Routing Tables and my Service Books in my BB. I have GPRS (not gprs) on top which means i have active BIS.  i have registered my HRTs several times... and resending my service books... same thing...
-My carrier has not reported any data outage.
    - I'm in an area where I've had RIM data services (for months now). It has always been working well. I've never really had any problems with my BIS until 4 days ago when it just suddenly stopped sending/receiving emails, surfing through internet browser, using facebook, twitter, ym apps, etc..
-the big mystery is when i turn on the wifi, the emails suddenly go through and i can send emails. i can open apps that used to only run on BIS. this is ok i guess, but i could never do any of these if i'm not connected to wifi.
-i've read somewhere that it may be some application error or something, so I've wiped out my BB thrice now, deleted all third party apps, everything is clean i guess, but still I end up with the same problem.
-i updated my OS, same problem.. wiped it out... used BBSAK, reinstalled OS... same thing...
can you help me out with this? i have tried battery pull, wipe out and OS reinstallation lots of times but same problem happens...

  • Connect AE to motorola cable model with static IP

I'm trying to replace the wireless modem supplied by the cable company with my AE/time capsule. This involves using a static IP.
I've gone through all the various stages using the information from the ISP but when I try to save the settings on the airport it gives the error message "IP address not compatible with WAN setup" and just won't let me go further.
    I am stumped.
The AE has been reset to factory settings. I am using the router address supplied by the ISP - is this wrong? If I don't use static IP I don't get the problem, but I also don't get a connection, obviously, so I'm assuming the issue is somehow linked to the static issue.
The cable modem is a motorola so lord knows what other problems I will have but for now I just want to at least get the configuration right in principle.
    What am I doing wrong?
Please bear in mind, I have a brain but I am NOT a techie. I have had the TC working with a cable modem before (but not static IP), and had a working AE with static IP on an ethernet connection both without much problem, so this has me cross and confused.
    Halp?

Power down the Motorola SB5101 cable modem. Unplug your Netcomm wireless router and set it aside. "Hard reset" your Extreme by following the instructions below, and connect its Ethernet WAN port to the cable modem. Don't try to reconfigure the Extreme from its present settings; "hard reset" it and start from the beginning.
Power up both the cable modem and the Extreme, launch AirPort Utility, select "New AirPort Extreme..." from your Mac's Wi-Fi menu, and proceed to configure it. After clicking Update, wait a moment or two to reset, then connect to the wireless network you just created by selecting it in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu.
There should be no need to use a static IP address. If you have reason for requiring one explain what it is, but you will require information from your ISP.
It's not clear whether you have an AirPort Extreme, a Time Capsule, or both. If you have both then that also needs clarification.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • Trouble connecting Cisco router with cable modem for Internet purposes

So I am requesting help from the Cisco community on this issue as the cable company states there equipment is working fine.  At all my facilities I have a guest Internet service setup through a local Internet provide to provide Internet services to the residents and guests.  I have the cable modem usually a Motorola SBG6580 or a SMC 8014 (both provided by cable company) connected to my router on a FE or GE interface.  I am using static IPs and using the cable modem just as a modem (bridge mode).  Over the past several months these connections have just stopped working.  I have not made any drastic changes to my router configs; however, the cable company has updated the firmware on these modems.  I am wondering if that could affected how the modem and router talk.  I was told by the cable company that the modem sees the Cisco router but that the port is inactive.  My router shows the port is active and traffic passing.  Does anyone have any ideas that could point where the problem lies?  I will post a basic config to one that currently does not work.  I am using a VRF to route a certain group out, using NAT.  Please let me know if I need to post additional info.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Let me know if you need anything else.  I need to figure this out and I just don't get it because the other site wasn't working a few days ago and all of a sudden it is working again but others are still not.

I currently have an email address with my cable company.  In order to use the "@icloud" email addresses, do I also need my cable company email address?

That's right, all you need is the actual internet connection. If you want to use the cable company email in addition it has no effect either way on iCloud, it's up to you.
When you sign in in System Preferences (or Settings)>iCloud (Lion 10.7.5. minimum required, or iOS5/6) and check 'Mail' in the list, you will be asked to create an @icloud.com address, and the account will automatically be added to the Mail application and set up. You can also access your mail at http://icloud.com

  • Silly question, maybe. I want to change from Verizon DSL to cable, but cable company doesn't supply router.  can I use my Airport Extreme as wireless router?

We currently have the following wireless home-network configuration, powered by Verizon DSL.
    2 macbook pro’s
    1 emachine
    HP PhotoSmart 6122 all-in-one printer
    Apple TV
Apple Airport Extreme Base Port A 1408
    Westell 7500 router
Thinking I’d get wider wireless coverage throughout my 2 bedroom home, I purchased the Airport Extreme. It is connected to the router via its sole usb port.  The result was only a tiny increase in speed, and no increase in coverage, so I don’t know why I have it.
We now want to change from DSL to cable, thus ditching Verizon.  Our new cable provider supplies the cable box, but no router for wireless networking.
    Here are my questions.
Can I use the Airport Extreme (AE) as a wireless router?
If so, how should I hook it up?  Should the usb cable go from the AE to the cable box, and all the other devices connect wirelessly?
If not, how should I be using the AE to some advantage?  What can I get out of the investment?
Thank you very much for your help!  Beatriz

What I wrote has nothing to do with what the cable company charges for their installation. And, usually they will help with the router setup even if you supply your own router. I don't know what they will charge for the modem.
Note that you need to get just a modem. You don't want a modem/router combination. That will make using an AEBS effectively nearly impossible. You will need to ask specifically for just a standalone modem, and that you will supply your own router.

I just got my cable company to switch my wireless router to a wired one considering now I have the wireless airport device (the newest one) but now I can't get a wireless signal. The router works when directlyplugged in,the aiport wireless device is green. I've tried going through my new MacBook Pro settings and it the diagnostics check, it says network changes detected, I tell it that it "yes" does connect to a cable modem, it tells me to restart it, after I do it asks if there are any other devices hooked up ( firewall) and when I say no it tells me that it can't fix the problem.
Now I know that I probably have a new IP address because of the cable company switching the boxes but it was working fine with the other box, now there isn't a signal to be had on it!
Please anybody out there that can help!!!??

Any time you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle with the new equipment. Check out the following AirPort User Tip. Please post back your results.

  • Can AE provide wired LAN connectto DVD player with internet streaming

    Hi!
Can you please tell me if the Airport Express (in a home network that has a Airport Extreme as the primary router) be used to connect wirelessly to the router and then use the LAN 100 port to connect a DVD player with internet video streaming.
Bottom line, can the AE LAN port be used to feed a wired connection, or is it only for taking a LAN input to create a wireless network?
    Thanks!

You could continue to use the older "g" devices to stream with AirTunes, but yes, the slower "g" speeds will drag down the performance on the network.
I would give a strong look to ethernet powerline adapters. They are almost as good as having a straight ethernet cable connection and will provide much more bandwidth and speed than wireless.
If you are going to download movies or stream audio and vide, wireless is not the way to go. Ethernet is always the best way to go if possible. Second choice is ethernet powerline adapters. Distant third for movie streaming or gaming applications would be wireless.
