Can I exclude folder(s) in finder?
Hi,
I just made the move to Mac after over 20 years on a PC so I'm pretty green. Here is my problem. I installed Printmaster 2.0 on my Mac and this program has over 80,000 images. Now if I look for an image or try to attach a file in an email program, Finder tries to sort through all of these images which takes forever Is there any way to exclude the Printmaster folder from Finder's sorting? Otherwise, my only option is to uninstall Printmaster.

I think one of your problems is that you are using Apple's default "smart folder" search in the Sidebar, which is godawful. It does indeed define pretty much everything that can be stored as a file a document. Don't use it. Rather than trying to "tell Finder to NOT look in a particular folder"--just tell it to look in the folder you want to access. You do that by NOT using the "smart folders" (AKA "saved searches"). Instead put the folders you actually are using for your files into the "Places" section of the Sidebar, and stop using the saved searches until you get up to speed enough to create your own searches that do exactly what you want to.
I strongly suggest you get a book about using Snow Leopard. Some of the best Mac books are in the Missing Manual series:

Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
This action will delete any custom Mail stationery that you have created. If you want to preserve it, ask for instructions.
If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:

Lightroom 5.7.1, Yosemite OS X - Synchronise Folder function doesn't work in Lr.

I am trying to perform the same function in Lr that I have been doing for many years in the past and has only been a problem in the last few days (possibly coinciding with upgrading to Yosemite, trying to find out whether that is the problem)
I am not intending to sync any files with Creative Cloud but only trying to use 'Synchronize Folder' function in Lr. Normally, I would right click on a particular folder in Lr catalogue and click on that function to check that the Lr Catalogue is perfectly matching my drives where the original photos are actually stored.
The problem that I only started to encounter is that I can see the files on the actual drives but they do not appear in my Lr Catalogue and they are completely invisible to Lr. I simply can not get Lr to recognise them and then import them to catalogue.
If for example, I export images to Ps and then save and close them, they do appear on my drive but are invisible to Lr and I can't get them imported into the catalogue. Import to folder also not producing any results as they are still invisible to Lr.
Completely baffled by it. Any idea what could be the reason?

Double click the Trash icon in the Dock.
In the window that opens up, highlight and right click the application folder entry.
Select "Put Back" from the contextual menu.
If not, restore from your backup.

This command will change the ownership of a file.
Any file or folder with a userid of 501 is changed to 1000. Your numbers will differ.
sudo find -x / -user 501 -exec chown 1000 {} \;
#And you need to do this from an administrator id.

I want to be able to specify paths and/or filename patterns that should NEVER be indexed in the catalog: not that they don't show up under certain circumstances, just that they are NOT THERE (in the catalog) to begin with!!
I also do NOT want to have to respecify these criteria when "synching" the catalog; criteria should be PERMANENT (or at least 'til they're changed in LR preferences).
I cannot be the only person in the world with this problem--but it sure seems like it, because I've spent an inordinate amount of time doing online searches & I can't find anything that addresses this issue.
Can anyone PLEASE HELP me?
BTW, Adobe employees (if there are any of you out there), I'm simply trying out LR now. If I can't get this (seemingly fundamental) thing worked out (with relatively little effort), Adobe is going to LOSE A SALE of LR, because it's useless to me without this feature.

The same way that you avoid buying things in your local convenience store. You don't stick a lot of labels on certain shelves, slap a credit card down on the counter each week, and announce you are buying everything that doesn't have a label on its shelf. You just choose the things you want to buy.
Your mention of "synching the catalog" suggests that you are expecting the LR library, to mirror the total images in the computer by default. This is not IMO a useful way to think about it. LR contains no images at all, by default: the Catalog starts out empty.
Then you Add just those selected images that you want to import, among those already in the computer. That's a one-off process which is IMO best achieved controllably in batches - which you can keyword and otherwise organise in LR terms as you go. For new incoming images, ongoing, it is a question of Copying, Moving or Adding these in defined batches as they occur - from the relevant location only - there is no need to re-consider the import of a wider body of images. And one would not want to repeat that whole task anyway: one's prior investment in achieving the right selectivity, has a positive value.

Time Machine is listed as excluded folder after migration
I just bought a new iMac and used Time Machine to migrate files and folders over. The first time the new iMac attempted to do a Time Machine backup, I clicked for it to inherit backup history. I just entered Time Machine to look for a file that existed prior to the migration and my backups only go back to the date of the migration, about 2 days ago. However, when I go into Finder and click on Time Machine, it has all of my old backups in folders and I am able to open each folder and see the backups/contents of each day prior to migration. Also, when I click on options in Time Machine System Preferences, it has Time Machine listed as an excluded folder for back up.
How can I get the Time Machine application to recognize the folders saved on the Time Machine external harddrive, i.e., I want to click on Time Machine in the dock and view old backups rather than go into Finder and search the folders for each back up?
Thanks!!I'm not sure I understand what you mean. The Time Machine volume itself is always excluded from backup. That has nothing to do with what I believe to be your problem, which is that you can't directly access snapshots of your old boot volume where you expect them to be in the time-travel view. That's the subject of the page I linked to.
The snapshots are grayed because they contain no data from your new boot volume. You have to go up to the Computer level, then navigate to the snapshot you want to restore from, and then down to the files. -
How to Open a Specific Folder in the Finder via Shortcut Key
I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere, so sorry for not finding it...
Is it possible to assign a shortcut key to open a specific folder with Automator or AppleScript? There are 4-5 commonly used folders buried 10-11 levels deep on a server and I'd love to have a shortcut key to open those particular folders in the Finder.

You installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data.

I like having my Documents folder on the Dock so I added the Documents folder from the Finder to the Dock. When I save a document to the Documents folder, the saved document appears in the Documents folder from the Finder and not in the Documents folder on the Dock. Why is this happening? And how can I change this?

I want to use a folder action to find and replace text and change Mac carriage returns to DOS line feeds inside text files.
The text to be replaced is: "/Users/wim/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Music" (without the quotes)
This text has to be removed (i.e. replaced by an empty string)
The text occurs many times within each file.
The files are playlists exported from iTunes in the M3U format (which are text files). They contain Mac carriage returns. These need to be changed to DOS line feeds.
I have found the following two perl commands to achieve this:
To find and replace text: perl -pi -w -e 's/THIS/THAT/g;' *.txt
To change carriage returns to line feeds: perl -i -pe 's/\015/\015\012/g' mac-file
I know that it's possible to make a folder action with Automator that executes a shell script.
What I want to do is drop the exported playlists in M3U format in a folder so that the folder action will remove the right text and change the carriage returns.

Thanks for your helpOk, I've include an applescript to run a shell command. The applesript command quoted form makes a string that will end up as a single string on the bash command line. Depending on what you want to do, you may need multiple string on the bash command lines. I've included some information on folder actions.
It is easier to diagnose problems with debug information. I suggest adding log statements to your script to see what is going on. Here is an example.

How can I remove icons from the Finder sidebar? Transferred info from my Mac Pro desktop computer (using target mode) and there were folder icons on the Mac Pro Finder sidebar that are now on the MacBook Finder sidebar, even though these folders do not exist on the MacBook. Tried to drag them off, which is the usual way to get rid of folders that the user adds to the sidebar (as opposed to those that can be added via the Customize Toolbar dropdown menu) but was unsuccessful. I then unchecked all of the Customize Toolbar menu items and the folder icons still remained. What else can I do?
Did you hold the Command (Apple) key while dragging them off the sidebar? That usually makes them go *poof*.
