Can I export my Aperture library to iPhoto?

I "upgraded" to Aperture about a year ago, and I like all the editing features, etc. However, Aperture seems very cumbersome when I am trying to do simple things, like email photos via an email program open in Safari, or making a simple slideshow, etc. I was thinking that it might be better to use iPhoto as my main photo management tool, and use Aperture only when I want to do more advanced adjustments, etc. Thanks for any input!

Stick with Aperture is my advice.
Thes things you mention:
simple things, like email photos via an email program open in Safari, or making a simple slideshow
are the same in iPhoto as in Aperture. If you can give specific examples we may be able to point you more concete information.
Reverting from Aperture is not easy. It means starting over from scratch.
iPhoto has no knowledge of, and knows nothing of how the Aperture Library works. It cannot read the Aperture library. So
1. Export all your Masters
2. Export all your Versions
You can write the metadata to the files on export - check out the Export presets. Note that you cannot export Faces. There is no convention for sharing Faces. The best you can do is use Faces as a basis for keywording.
Import them into iPhoto. Note that there is no way to associate the masters with the versions in iPhoto, so you'll have apparent duplicates.
Also, you can't use Aperture as an External editor because it isn't one. You would be importing to Aperture, processing and the exporting again, and then importing to iPhoto, a needlessly complex workflow.
Aperture does everything that iPhoto and a whole lot more.

  • How can I import my Aperture Library in iPhoto ?

    Hi guys,
I use Aperture 3 since 2 years but I would like to go back to iPhoto ('11) because I don't need all the options in Aperture...
I know that I can easily import photos from the Aperture library to iPhoto but the "normal" method lose all the faces...
Do you fnow an other solution to keep all datas in iPhoto (photos, faces and places) ?
    Thaks a lot, Ju

Aperture and iPhoto are entirely different applications that work in very different ways.
The only communication between the two is as follows:
Aperture is able to parse the iPhoto Library to allow it to import the contents while stacking the Originals and Modified versions, preserving metadata and so forth.
Aperture can share its Previews with the iLife apps, including iPhoto.
    That's it.
So, specifically, what interaction there is between the two is designed to facilitate migration from iPhoto to the more powerful app. After that, iPhoto has exactly the same relationship to the Aperture Library as, say, Pages or iMovie.
iPhoto has no knowledge of, and knows nothing of how the Aperture Library works. It cannot read the Aperture library.
If you want to revert to iPhoto:
    1. Export all your Masters
    2. Export all your Versions

  • Can't open aperture library in iPhoto

When I try to open my Aperture library (v3.4.4) with iPhoto (v9.4.3), I get the following message and the application quits:
Aperture library needs to be upgraded.
To open this Aperture library in iPhoto, it first needs to be upgraded with Aperture 3.3...
Both iPhoto and Aperture worked properly with a shared library prior to installing the 3.4.4 Aperture update in mid-April 2013. Upon first launch of Aperture after the update, there was a message stating that the library needed to be upgraded. The upgrade completed succesfully, and Aperture has been running properly.
To remedy the problem, I have tried the following:
    1) Repair Permissions of the Aperture library
    2) Repair Database of the library
    3) Rebuild Database of the library
    4) Opening the iPhoto library with the menu command <Open Library in iPhoto> in Aperture (Same notice to upgrade the library appears)
    My setup is:
    - Latest 27" iMac w/ 3.2GHz Core i5, 16GB RAM
    - OSX 10.8.3
    - Aperture v3.4.4
    - iPhoto v.9.4.3
    - Aperture library is stored in the local hard drive in the Pictures folder
    - iPhoto used to make print products only availble in iPhoto
I have searched the boards and have noticed people with similar symptoms but not the same circumstances.
Does anyone have a suggestion or solution?
    Thank you.

    Added:
Just in case you cannot find a backup of the Aperture Library that has been created with AP 3.4.4, make a current backup of your Aperture library and trash the file "DataModelVersion.plist". Then open your library in Aperture 3.4.4. Aperture creates a new version of this file, at least my experiments showed, that the file can be restored this way.

  • Can I copy certain aperture library files from the finder?

    Hello,
I have an older library, that I updated to the current Aperture, and recently froze from bad media.  I think it was a bunch of videos in one of the events.  Anyways, I want to copy some of the photos from a event in the old library to a new working library.  Can I do this from finder?  I tried exporting and it froze, leaving the photo export in some limbo state...

Do you also have iPhoto 9.5.1? If you open your Aperture library in iPhoto you can use "File > Reveal in FInder > Original File" to show you the original image file inside the library. Then you can copy it easily to a new location.
If you do not have iPhoto, you can reveal the original photos by ctrl-clicking the Aperture library and using the command "Show Package Contents".  Your images are in the Masters folder, organized by the year, month, day of importing them.
But be careful, when browsing these folders. Only copy, don't move.

As stated above, How can I get my Aperture library back from the Photos application?  I'm not a fan of Photos right now and haven't used iPhoto in years, so that wasn't a loss... I didn't realize when I gave Photo's access to my Aperture library, I was going to lose it...
I want to get it back, any suggestions?
    Thanks again!

  • Photo preview blank when browsing Aperture Library from iPhoto

    Hello to everyone,
I need to import in iPhoto some photo of my Aperture's Library, but when I open it from iPhoto I can see all the pictures exept the lastest that I've imported in the Aperture Library (that have been taken with a Canon EOS 550D with RAW format): I see a blank icon (that can I select and import in my iPhoto library) instead its preview.
In Aperture the Canon EOS 550D RAW format works correctly, but I can't see the preview of the image in the browser under iPhoto.
Can anyone help me solving this problem?
I have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 (with all the updates) and the lastest versione of both iPhoto and Aperture.
    Thanks.
    Andrea

    Hi Terence,
thanks for the reply, but I've already regenerated all my previous (the entire library), but with no success.. I still continue to see a blank icon browsing the Aperture Library from iPhoto.
But I see that each time I enter in Aperture, it alway restart processing library (but only for some photos).. when it finish that process, I close Aperture and when I enter in it again, it restart processing the same photos.. again and again and again
    Any other suggestion?
    Regards.

  • Transfer aperture library to iPhoto library

how to transfer aperture library to iphoto library?

If you have the latest version of iPhoto you can open the Aperture library with iPhoto.  No transferring needed.

  • Insufficient disk space when opening Aperture library in iPhoto

I just created a fresh library with 3000 photos (6GB) in Aperture. I then tried to open that library using iPhoto by holding down the Option key on launch but got an alert: "Insufficient Disk Space: There is not enough free space on the disk that contains this library to upgrade it. It is estimated that you need at least 6GB of free space."
OK, I only have 4GB of free space on my HD. But why would iPhoto need to upgrade the library to begin with? I'm using the latest version of both Aperture (3.5.1) and iPhoto (9.5.1) and I thought they use the exact same library. And even if iPhoto needs to upgrade the library, why would it need an extra 6GB when the Aperture library is only 6GB? If opening the library in iPhoto results in increasing the library size from 6GB to 12GB, I'd rather not do it. Am I missing something?

iPhoto and Aperture are using the same library, but Aperture has preference settings, that prevent previews or faces from being created. If you open an Aperture library in iPhoto, the library size may increase, since iPhoto may be creating files, that Aperture did not create.  Probably iPhoto's estimated was too pessimistic, but opening an Aperture library can increase the library size.
But photograhis is right. You should not be running any applications at all, if you do not have at least 20GBof free disk space.

  • When exporting my aperture library it unexpectedly quits.

I have tried to export my aperture library and it keeps crashing on me. I have already exported 2 other libraries from the same computer and have had no issues however i am trying to export the 3rd library and it gets to 20% and crashes. I have already tried to repair the library but it continues to crash. Any suggestions? Thanks in advanced!

Is your external drive formatted correctly? MacOS X Extended? And is the drive mounted locally or is it a network volume? Aperture will have problems and may crash, if you are copying a library to a different filesystem.
But when i try to export my 3rd library (labeled "Maldvies 2012') it crashes after about 20% of it is exported.
You may have a corrupted item in your library (image file or video). Sometimes an item has an illegal filename, containing non printable characters or return characters. Or the media corrupted and Aperture cannot render thumbnails or preview. Try to export in smaller installments - select only half of the items you want to export. If this suuceeds, you will know that the problematic file is in the other half of the items. Keep subdividing, until you know which photo or movie is crashing Aperture, then delete it from the library.
Not sure where to find the crash logs??
The crashlogs are shown in the alert panel, when Aperture crashes, you should see something similar to this:
    Process:         Aperture [6484]
    Path:            /Applications/Aperture.app/Contents/MacOS/Aperture

Older crashlogs can be found using the "Console". You can launch the "Console" from Applications/Utilities. Click on "Show Logs" in the Toolbar. The "Files" section in the Sidebar has a brick   "Diagnostic Reports" or "Crash Reporter". Look for files with Aperture in the name.

  • Cannot open aperture library in iPhoto

I recently opened an old iPhoto library in Aperture. This changed the file extension, and presumably the file structure. Libraries are supposed to be interchangeable between the two apps, but now I get the following message when I try to open the libary in iPhoto: "To open this Aperture library in iPhoto, it first needs to be upgraded with Aperture 3.3 or later. Quit iPhoto and then open your library in Aperture to upgrade it." I'm running Aperture 3.4.5 and iPhoto 9.4.3. I've repaired permissions and rebuilt the database (and whatever the third option was when Aperture is launched with Command-Option). Any suggestions?

    Stephen,
the problem is probably an inconsistent DateModelVersion.plist file in the Aperture Library.
If the library cannot be repaired, try to restore this file from your backup, from a time when the library could be opened in iPhoto. If you have Code installed, you can try to edit the file manually.

  • How can I use my itunes library for iphoto slideshow?

how can I use my itunes library for iphoto slideshow?

    Here's a possible workaround:
Create the slideshow in Iphoto and add a theme and music.
Install Picasa  and it will include the slideshow on it's indexed list.
Upload the slideshow to PicasaWebAlbums and send the link to anyone you wish.
The music and theme is preserved.
Caveat: My playback pictures appear darker than usual but that could be just lousy photography...:)

  • On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture.  How can I access the Aperture Library  on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup?  I can only access the application but not the library..

On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture.  How can I access the Aperture Library  on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup?  I can only access the application but not the library..

Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it.

  • How can I export a RAW photo from iphoto to anywhere without it changing into a jpg?

How can I export a RAW photo from iphoto to anywhere (PSE, or desktop) without it changing into a jpg???

See if any of this info will help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.  3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window".  That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu).  This way you get the best of both worlds.

How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?
I used to store my pictures on an external hard drive using the latest version of Aperture. Now I tried migrating my Aperture library to Photos. However, after a short moment an error message popped up telling me that "Photos was unable to make a copy of your library before preparing it. Photos does not have the necessary permissions...".
My external HDD doesn't need any permission repairs nor is the system prohibited to read from or write to it.
