Can I extract an InDesign preview image?

Somehow one of my Tiff images that I use in InDesign has been corrupted. PS won't open it (it tells me that it is not a Tiff file), so the only record I have of the image is the preview that InDesign grabbed when I first imported the image. InDesign shows me the image when I go to that page, but when I try to export or print, InDesign tells me it can't find the file.
This image is not a very important one. It is a simple drawing I made in PS with a few fills and I'm quite happy with the quality that I see in InDesign. So I thought I'd try to export it to PDF and grab the image from within the PDF. Wouldn't export. OK, how about embedding the file and exporting? No go. Print? No.
That is my problem. Instead of me spending a few hours to redraw the image, given that I'm happy with what I see on screen, can I get the image out of InDesign?

Sandee, maybe I didn't do what you suggested. Let me use colours to explain what I did. I clicked on the white pointer, clicked on the image and it was surrounded by a brown rectangle, then I copied (or cut) and nothing got copied to the clipboard. I tried images that are OK, and still nothing happened. I am using CS, maybe that's why I can't copy a preview image.
Do you mean that when you copy an image with the direct selection tool, that you are copying InDesign's stored preview to the clipboard?
I also tried these:
1. Copying the image and pasting it back into InDesign CS. That worked, but I couldn't copy the second image to the clipboard.
2. Cut the image and repasted into InDesign. Again, I wasn't able to copy or cut to the clipboard.
Maybe trying to paste into Photoshop CS is where the problem lies. I'm going to download a trial version of CS3 to see if that works.

  • Why can't I see a preview image when opening files in InDesign?

I have "Always save preview images with documents" checked in File Handling, also with Save As. But I can only see the CS3 ID icon in my folders on the desktop, and when opening a file in InDesign. I'm running 10.4.11. Shouldn't I be able to see a preview image of the first page of an InDesign file?
    Thanks!

i think those preview images means that indesign saves a lowres image of every placed image inside indd. So you can open your indd in some other computer and see all placed images even if you don´t have all the original linked hires images transferred with indd.
If you want to see your documents first page as document icon, use Bridge to browse your files. It recognizes a content of indd files and show first page as icon. .

  • How can I access the thumbnail/preview image of a PSD file?

Hey guys I'm trying to salvage some work from a corrupted PSD file via the thumbnail. What happened was I saved my work and closed photoshop and hit the reset button on my PC afterwards by mistake (i dont see why this caused a problem because the program was fully closed at the time). When I open the file now it says it uses an unsupported blending mode, if i press ok I get an error saying incompatible PS version, if I press flatten it says unexpected end of file was encountered. Ive tried PSD repair tools and searched the net for solutions and there doesnt seem to be any - Ive pretty much given up on trying to repair the original file.
The thing is, the thumbnail of the file seems to be intact because I can still see it as the file icon. I wanted to know if there was any way i can access this thumbnail image so i can enlarge it. Any help would be very appreciated!!

I have an idea to try...  Earlier I mentioned the Windows Picture Viewer...  Normally that won't read PSD files, but I'm used to using that to look into PSD files because at one point I bought the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack.
Something to try, and it won't cost anything:
    1.  Try downloading and installing the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack from here:  http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/
    2.  Once it's installed you get a free trial period, so you can try opening your PSD file by right-clicking on it and choosing Preview.
If that fails, here's another thing to try:
Open the Bridge component of Photoshop and navigate to the folder in which you have the file.  It may be able to make a larger thumbnail than the one you're seeing.
Other than that, are you saying you're seeing the thumbnail in Windows Explorer?  If that's the case, what happens if you right-click in the white space near the file and choose View - Extra Large Icons?

  • Can't Extract Files from System Image DVD

I recently created a Windows 7 system image onto DVD-RWs as my HDD was suspect.  The HDD was replaced under warranty. When I came to restore the system image I got up to the fourth DVD and the process would not go any further (could not read the DVD).
I then tried to extract some of the more important files from the first three disks that the restore process had read successfully.  I used the AttachVHD option under Computer management however for every .vhd file which I tried to attach I received a "The file or directory is corrupted anf unreadable" error message from the Virtual Disk Manager.
I also tried 7-Zip to extract files but received the message "Can not open file as archive" each time.
Can any one throw any light on why I can't read these .vfd files?

Only last night a user went through the same situation as you are going through. Details are important. For now I am assuming that your computer is Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit. If other post immediately to let me know.
    1. You need two files from Adobe, one .exe and the other .7z. If you have a 64 bit computer operating system
make sure the you see 64 in the name of the file.
    2. Assure that you have antivirus and firewall disabled.
    3. Right click the .exe file and select Run As Administrator. The double click the .exe to Run it. This will lead
you into the 7z which is the program.
If the desktop is not working as the destination for the Adobe Premiere Elements 12 Folder which will be present after the 7z has completed, then set it to Documents.
In the Adobe Premiere Elements 12 Folder, double click the PRE12 Folder to find the Setup.exe from which you will
    install the program.
I will be back in a moment to add the link to last night's thread where we went through what you are going through now.
Make sure at the onset that you have the right files to be used with your specific operating system.

Add On...This is last night's thread on this type of issue
Premeire elements 12 will only download as files...

  • How can I get an InDesign vector images into Flash without redrawing

I've created a logo in InDesign and trying to get it into
    Flash to create a symbol?
    Thank you,
    Suzy

Oops, EPS can't be opened directly in Flash. You can open the
EPS in Illustrator and save as .ai and open that in Flash.
In Flash, use File > Import > Import to Stage. If
Import to Stage is faded out, just make sure you select a layer
    that isn't locked.

  • Extracting JPEG preview image from DNG file

My company is using the DNG SDK to support raw or DNG files for users of our digital asset management software. We extract a jpeg preview/thumbnail from ALL file types we support.
My question is: how can we extract a jpeg preview from a DNG file, using the latest version of the DNG SDK?
Currently, our software uses the SDK to read a DNG file and write a tiff file, and passes the tiff to imagemagick to get a resized jpeg we can use for a preview or thumbnail.
When we extract the tiff from the customer's file, we get a base version of the image that does not show subsequent colour adjustments made in (eg) CS3; the customer would like to get a preview that shows (especially) the colour adjustments that have been made.
I know the jpeg preview exists inside the DNG, I used exiftools to extract it,and it does show the colour adjustments made.
How do I get that preview image out of the DNG file using the DNG SDK? Does the DNG SDK support that operation?
The SDK has a lot of API, but not much documentation or samples to show usage.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

    Maybe it isn't the smartest way, but this should work:<br /><br />... call info.Parse (host, stream) etc here - the usual stuff<br />{<br />     // find biggest jpeg image for preview<br />     unsigned int subMaxW=0;<br />     int subMaxI=-1;<br />     for(unsigned int i=0;i<info.fIFDCount;i++)<br />     {<br />          dng_ifd* pIFD=info.fIFD[i].Get();<br />          if (ccJPEG==pIFD->fCompression && 1==pIFD->fNewSubFileType)<br />          {<br />               if (pIFD->fImageWidth>subMaxW)<br />               {<br />                    subMaxW=pIFD->fImageWidth;<br />                    subMaxI=i;<br />               }<br />          }<br />     }<br />     if (subMaxI>=0) // load desired jpeg preview<br />     {<br />          unsigned int i=subMaxI;<br /><br />          dng_ifd* pIFD=info.fIFD[i].Get();<br />          if (ccJPEG==pIFD->fCompression && 1==pIFD->fNewSubFileType)<br />          {<br />               // seek to pIFD->fTileOffset[0] and load jpeg<br />          }               <br />     }<br />}

  • Can you change the size of the preview images on an Apple TV without changing video resolution?

I have a 32 inch LCD TV. My room is relatively large and I can't easily see the preview images or read the text on the TV across the room. Is it possible to change the size of preview images in the menu screens without increasing the resolution of the TV itself? I think this should be possible, but can't seem to find a way to do it.

No that's not something you can do on the Apple TV.
If you have any suggestions that you think might enhance the Apple TV you can send Apple your feedback here.

  • Can I extract images/items from a pdf?

I lost my hard drive! (D'oh!)
But I do have some hi-res pdf files made from the original files (InDesign).
Is it possible to extract discrete components from pdfs? Such as images, text blocks, etc?
It seems like it should be possible, but I'm wondering if one must be a PostScript coder or somesuch.
    Cheers!
    ~Ben

Excellent! Thank you both, George and Steve.
I have CS3, so v8.3.1 or Acrobat. So that process is Advanced > Document Processing > Export all images.
Oddly, it tells me that it can't extract/export vector images. I suppose that means AS SUCH, since it managed to export JPEG versions of images that I know were .eps format. Strange, but true!
    Thanks again!

  • Preview image in an InDesign doc

Is it possible to extract the preview images (as used by Bridge to preview the contents of an InDesign doc) from an InDesign doc?

@FergyMac – basically a good idea, but you are limited to the browers' pdf viewing capabilities.
So most (all?) of that kind of pdf viewer will not support live transparency (amongst other features like color management etc.pp.).

  • How can I see preview images of STN files in CS4?

I save many of my art files as STN (Genuine Fractals) files so I can print on demand at various sizes. I used to be able to see tiny preview images of these files; now, using CS4 32-bit or 64-bit with Windows 7 64-bit OS, all I see in my STN folder is little blank page icons - no images. I have descriptive filenames, but still - it would REALLY help to be able to quickly scan the images for the one I want to open in PhotoShop. I used to be able to see these preview STN images. Help??

Theoretically, to see Sting format (.stn) thumbnails, you'd have to get a codec from the OnOne software people and install it into Windows Explorer as a shell extension.  This has nothing to do with Photoshop.
I know of no such codec available, at least not for .x64 systems (64 bit Explorer).  I haven't seen .stn thumbnails for a long time, and I currently have their Perfect Resize 7 product.
But it seems to me that a long ago when I used a 32 bit OS there was a time that I could see .stn thumbnails.  Perhaps they once provided a 32 bit codec with their product, or I had a 3rd party codec that understood the format.
It would be a great question to pose to OnOne Software.  If you do, please report back here what they say.

  • Scanning in Mavericks? I can no longer use the scanning function in my HP Officejet 4500. HP says to go through Preview, Image Capture, or Print/Scan in System Prefs. Still doesn't work. Any ideas/similar experiences?

Scanning in Mavericks? I can no longer use the scanning function in my HP Officejet 4500.
HP says to go through Preview, Image Capture, or Print/Scan in System Prefs.
Still doesn't work. Any ideas/similar experiences?

Sure it is, yet it's called HP LaserJet Professional M1210nf MFP Series *
Today, I followed your other advice, and deleted the printer, deleted the /Library/Printer/hp folder, downloaded the entire set of driver, re-installed the printer twice, once with the driver, once with Bonjour.
The Bonjour Printer has the scan option active, but it is doesn't work (refer to above.), it is called M1217nfw
The Apple Driver Printer doesn't show the scan option at all, it is called M1217nf (as on the http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#HP list.) This model number doesn't exist, as far as I can tell.
Still, everything works perfectly in Snow Leopard, for a MF printer that has been manufactured years after Snow Leopard was released.
Why going up in software version means going backwards in compatiblity for brand new product is really the question that puzzles me here.

It is working now. I no longer get the message about the item not being available in the US and I can access the store.

  • Can I have a preview image(tiff) in panel?

I want a preview image(tif file) in my photoshop extension panel. However, the Flex control Image only support .bmp, .jpg, .png. Is there any control that can have any format image preview like photoshop LAYERS panel do? Or you have another way to fix it. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

The Navigator panel has a preview of your .psd with layers. Infact I think it works with all file formats. It can be re-sized to whatever size you want. You may have already known all this. But if not, just open up the navigator panel.. would that work for what you need?

  • How can I extract images from a keynote presentation?

Keynote itself sometimes provides images - for example, the cover of a book in the Leather Book theme. How can I extract this image in order to manipulate it? I saw an answer that seemed to help, which was to ensure that the keynote file was saved as a package - but there doesn't seem a way to make this happen with an existing presentation, since there is no 'Save As' any more and duplication doesn't seem to hack it. I'm using MacOS Lion 10.7.5.
    TIA

I found a solution. In the Format area, select the "Image" tab. You should see the file name there. Click and hold the name and drag and drop it to your desktop (or anywhere else you want to save it). It worked perfectly for me. Hope it helps!
