Can I failover a DHCP failover server?

Greetings,
I'm in the process of putting together an enterprise wide DHCP design.  I'm planning on leveraging the hot failover feature in Server 2012.  I'll be using a hub-and-spoke topology with a server in our primary datacenter acting as the failover partner
for all the DHCP servers at branch offices.
My question is can I failover the failover server?  Basically can I configure the failover partner for all the primary servers to fail over to yet another DHCP server in a secondary datacenter?
Thanks!

One line answer to your question is no. Since a given scope on a DHCP server can be part of one and only one failover relationship and given that all the scopes on your Hub DHCP server are part of different failover relationships distributed across
your spoke servers you cannot make those scopes a part of failover relationship with another DHCP Server.
Having said that, in case your hub DHCP Server fails the spoke DHCP servers can take over. Yet if you are concerned about data loss then you can have appropriate disaster recovery\backup solutions in place to safeguard the DHCP data on the hub server.

  • Adding a failover server in Unity 7.0(2) messaging only environment

Were are using a single Unity 7.0(2) server (messaging only) with Exchange and the message store running on the same server. We want to introduce a failover server in the invironment.
I originalloy built the server using the "istallation Guide for Cisco Unity Release 5.x in a Voice Messaging Configuration with Microsoft Exchange (Without Failover)" instructions.
    I have two questions:
Can I convert the existing server to a failover configuration with out having to rebuild it from scratch?
My next question is, since the documentation I'm reading states that the message store must be on the secondary server, is there a way to migrat the message store over?
    Thank for any help.

    Bradford,
Thanks for the reply and this looks like it might be my problem.   Question though, I see there is an option in advanced settings tools to exclude return reciepts from voice mail stack but I do not see the registry key.   Do I need both or will changing it in advanced tools be sufficient?
    Thanks,

  • Can DHCP computers serve as database server?

My laptop is a DHCP computer. I installed Loopback adapter for Oracle 10g Release 2. Can it serve as a database server? Can I use other computer with the client installation to access to the database server? Or I must install the client software at the laptop with the server installation. In this case, does the client connects to the server using Oracle Net Services?
    Thanks.

Two parts here: DHCP and Database access.
    1) DHCP
This is for finding/identifying the computer and is not part of the database discussion. (Assuming TCP/IP for this discussion ...)
A computer has an address and a name. The address is an IP address which may be 'statically' or 'dynamically' assigned. If static, a network admin provides the P address. If dynamc, it is assigned using DHCP. The name is just a readable alias for the address and tat is stored in either a lookup file (/etc/hosts) or 'resolved' by a program called DNS.
The problem with DHCP is that the computer name and address are provided on a time-limited lease. This means that the address can change over time.
A server should be at a known address so that clients can find it easily. (Imagine if your favorite grocery store moved every few weeks.)
So, while a server can use DHCP to run it's service, there is a risk that the service could become unavailable due to retrained leased. To mitigate that risk requires the network administration to take even further steps, such as Dynamic DNS.
Oracle 11gR2 is looking at mitigating that issue to some extent using a 'GNS server'.
    2) Database access
The other part to your question relates to the 'service' and/or 'sid'. In brief:
    - A sid represents the physical database instance (and is used to derive the start of memory for the database instance)
    - A service is logical and points to one or more SIDs (in RAC or standby, the service can imply multiple instances)
    - A database instance has at least one service and that service matches the sid
    - A database instance may support other services
    - A database instance registers the services that it will honour with the listener
    - The listener will listen on a network for 'requests for a service'
A TCP/IP client will always use a 3-part request to get to the database instance. The 3 parts are "host computer where the listener is", "the port on which to connect to the listener" "the service for which the listener should provide the final connection". Some of these parts may be implied, but in TCP/IP they are always there.
When you connect using a non-Java client, you may see a connection request like
    sqlplus user/password@alias
and the alias looks up in some 'resolver mechanism' to translate the alias into the 3 parts. The resolver mechanism is often the TNSNAMES.ORA usually installed with the client, although that could be different based on the contents of the SQLNET.ORA
In a Java (JDBC) connect, you will use a URL like "jdbc:oracle:thin:scott/tiger@//myhost:1521/orcl" - which is basically "jdbc:oracle:thin:user/password@//host:port/service" (see http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/jdbc_faq.html)
The HOST part in the above needs to get translated into a specific computer - and that is the link back to hostname, IP address, DHCP and DNS.

  • Failover server?

Is there a way to set up the JNLP file to specify a failover server in case the primary server is unavailable? It looks like I have to customize the JNLP file for each server we use for downloads (in the <jnlp codebase="http://...">).
I'm also guessing that if I tell my users to go to a different server when the primary is unavailable, they will end up with a duplicate set of JAR's underneath the alternate server's entry in the cache. True?
It would be nice if I could specify a mirroor server to go to when the first is unavailable. Any thoughts on how to tackle this?

This has also become an issue for me - I'm using webstart at a large corporate client. Ideally you want to be able to tell a cached jnlp to use an alternate codebase if the first one fails.
Is there any way to hook into the jnlp read step on the client using an extension - so that the client could use an alternate codebase?

  • Router DHCP and Server 2008R2 DNS

    Hello all,
Netgear Genie WND4300 as DHCP Router/Server
Server 2008 R2 as DNS server (AD DS)
Q: How can I get the DNS server to update automatically from the DHPC router?
And no, I can't move the DHCP role from the router to the server. (Which is probably the best solution but.....)
    Thanks in advance,
    don

    Hi,
Do you want to configure the DHCP server to register and update DNS A and PTR records on behalf of the DHCP-enabled clients? If yes, based on my experience, you need to configure on the DHCP server. Since your DHCP server is a router, you can contact its vendor
    for the specific settings.
    Best regards,

  • SNMP OID for DHCP on Server 2012

We recently installed Server 2012 standard on one of our servers and were trying to keep a graph of DHCP lease use. Anyway the OIDs for DHCP in Server 2008 R2 started with "1.3.6.1.4.1.311.1.3.2.1.1". If I try to snmpwalk these same OIDs on the new Server
2012 (We the DHCP server configured and active), I get:
    Error in packet.
Reason: (genError) A general failure occured
    Failed object: SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.311.1.3.2.1.1
I'm using SNMPwalk and I've never had a problem with this before. Any idea what would cause this? Thanks!
    Thanks!

I'm having the same issue. OIDs just don't work against a 2012 DHCP server. I can snmpwalk other OIDs, just not DHCP :(
Firewall has been disabled (and there were already adequate snmp rules allowing the traffic). Since I can query other OIDs, I'm ruling out firewall.
Has this info been removed in 2012?

  • What is a Dhcp name server and why is it on my Mac

I understand this is connected to Microsoft; it is on my iPhone 6 as part of my wifi set up but we have all Apple products.
    Can someone explain?

DHCP is is a setting and has nothing to do with Microsoft.
A domain name server translates urls like www.wikipedia.org into their IP addresses so your iPhone or computer can connect to them and display the website among several other things.
Its perfectly normal to have that setting.

  • Client Upgraded from Tiger to Leopard Can No Longer Connect to Tiger Server

I just finished upgrading a G5 2GHz DP Powermac from Tiger to Leopard. This was an Archive and Install upgrade with importing the old settings. After verifying the account migration, including .Mac connectivity, and fixing all 3rd party software compatibilities/upgrades, I tried to connect to our Tiger 4.11 server by clicking on the server's Icon in the Shared section of the Finder Sidebar. The finder then switches to browse the the server for shares: "Connecting..." is displayed under the tool bar, with a "Share Screen..." and "Connect As..." buttons to the right.
At this point the "Connecting..." remains displayed with the spinning circle in the bottom right of the Finder window.... spinning. This situation continues for several minutes until is seems the system gives up.
If I click on the Path button on the Tool Bar, and go up to the Shared level, ALL the Shares on the Network are displayed, including all the Tiger Client machine shares. I can click on the triangle beside the Tiger Client's icon, and all the drives and home directories on the Mac are listed. All the client shares can be accessed without any issues. NOTE: There are no other Leopard clients on the LAN.
Prior to the Leopard upgrade, this client could connect to the Tiger server as well. All the other clients on the LAN can access the Tiger server also.
On the Leopard client I have tried clicking and the "Connect As..." button and using the menu "Connect to Server" and specifying the server's IP, and I get the same "Connecting..." message with a "non-connecting" result.
I can only assume that somehow the Account Name and password are not being passed correctly. But, using "Connect As..." should resolve that. However, "Connect As..." does not give me a user/password window!
If I check the AFP Access log on the Server, the only messages displayed are "Mounted Volume..." No messages in the error log, and no messages in the "Connections" section.
Can anyone help me figure out why the Leopard client can not connect to the Tiger Server?
My apologies if the description of my problem is a bit disjointed. I have been thrown into server admin and am learning "Trial by Fire".
Any help or suggestions on how to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gary

    OK. A quick update.
After waiting for about 10 minutes for the rotating circle in the bottom right corner to stop, I was able to click on the "Connect As..." button. It took another 10 minutes, but the Connect As window eventual popped up. I entered the Userid and Password (saving to Keychain) and was able to see all the sharepoints on the the server. I browsed all the connected drives and folders without issue.
I then disconnected from the server. Reviewing the AFP logs on the server shows messages for the connection Login and Logout.
I then tried to reconnect to the server, and again another 10 minutes wait, although this time the Leopard client eventually connected automatically with the proper User, as per the AFP logs confirms.
Although, the client can now connect to the server, for it to take 10 minutes will be unacceptable to management, not to mention the end user. Tiger clients can connect in a couple seconds!
Is there a way to reduce the Leopard login time to, say, a couple seconds, like it does with the Tiger clients?
Again, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gary

It is not a bug, you might be using IE in Windows server 2012 and and browser might be restricting your site actions to respond properly.
Check this in a different browser or access site in a differ OS.

  • Can't send email from internal server, same domain name as external.

We have a domain "example.com", hosted externally, for email and a website.  We are thinking of hosting email 'inhouse' and have setup a dedicated subdomain on a 'fixed' IP, "mini.example.com" for AFP services mainly. mini.example.com provides DNS internally, its primary zone is also example.com. All access to the external web goes thru' a modem/router that the server is connected to. We have to set an A record for www access to our website.
In our testing to migrate email, the internal setup works fine, until the switch over.  Now we can receive mail to the mini server, but can't send any out.
We instructed our webhost provider to set the CNAME mail.example.com to point to mini.example.com and created a cPanel MX extry mail.example.com, 10 priority.  Previously, the external host had CNAME as mail.example.com to example.com and MX as example.com, 10 priority.
Since the implementation of the CNAME change, we can't send emails out and they get stuck at the outbox waiting. Client Mail app, says to check for port and SSL and account settings.
Any idea where we went wrong here and what we can do to get emails out? We could go to each computer and point-off the DNS to office IP, but we rather not.
    Thanks!

Thank you Camelot and MrHoffman for your replies.
I got in this am to find Mail.app could actually send out emails and I'm stratching my head wondering what happened yesterday.
SMTP server addresss was manually set to mail.example.com for all accounts. In trying to get things to work, the mail setup was redone again by "Accounts", in Systems Preferences, when Login is clicked on, and mail was automatically given a SMTP as mini.example.com instead of mail.example.com.  I'm guessing that that could be where the initial 'inside' problems were, given that it had a 0 answer to the MX query. Or then again I wasn't patient enough.
Just for completeness, and if there's something to learn from here, these are the dig results for example.com as seen from within the office network.
