Can I format only one partition on an external hard disk?

I have partitioned my external Hard drive into three different partitions, each of different formats. Two partitions for backing up my macbooks and one to copy to and from my windows PC. I would just like to know if in any way is it possible for me to be able to re-partition one of the partitions, without affecting my Time machine partitions, in case the need be in future.

Yes, provided the partition has sufficient free space.
Open Disk Utility, select the drive's main entry in the list then click on the Partition tab in the main window. Click in the partition you wish to change, then click on the Add [+] button. The partition should divide in half. You can the resize as you need. The blue area you see in each partition represents what is in use. When you have it as you want click on the Apply button.

  • Partitioning of an External Hard Disk

Hello everyone, I just bought a Western Digital External Hard Disk (500GB) and I will like to partition (I assume I need to partition it into two separative drives - 1 for Windows and 1 for Mac) it for the following uses:
    1. Able to read and write files from my Macbook Pro (Lion OS)
    2. Able to read and write files from the Boot Camp Partition in my Macbook Pro (Windows 7)
    3. Able to read and write files from other user's computers (Either an Apple OS or Windows OS)
    4. While on my Lion OS, I'm able to read and copy files from the Windows Partition of the ext. hard disk
    5. While on my Windows 7 OS, I'm able to read and copy files from the Mac Partition of the ext. hard disk
Your advice is greatly appreciated and I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you very much!

The simplest method is to format the drive in exFAT. Each OS can read/write to it.
However, it doesn't support user permissions.
All Windows versions back to XP (with a patch) can read/write exFAT. OS X back to 10.6.5 can read/write exFAT.

  • Can i have another operating system in my external hard disk??

for example windows or linux only in my external hard disk meanwhile in my macbook is tiger

Yes, you can if you partition the hard drive. If you want both Windows and Linux, then you need to create three partitions. Your OS X partition must use the GUID partition scheme, but the other partitions must be MBR. Unfortunately, you cannot have two different partition schemes on the same drive. There have been schemes devised to create the different partition schemes needed on a single drive. If you visit www.macosxhints.com you can search for the couple of 'hints' that provide information on how that's done.
If all you want is a Windows partition, then the best thing to do is use Boot Camp to create the partition. You can download the Boot Camp beta directly from Apple's download site. If you do some forum searching you will find many threads discussing the use of Boot Camp and Windows on Intel Macs.

  • Can I store my Aperture library on an external Hard Disk?

I have a MacBook Pro with very few free space on its internal hard drive. My Aperture library is getting very heavy and i would like to move my Aperture library to an external HD. I know that you can keep files where they are and see them in your aperture library, but the thing i'm trying to do is to STORE AND OPEN MY APERTURE LIBRARY (.APLIBRARY FILE) FROM AN EXTERNAL HARD DISK. Is this possible?

It is possible to put the Aperture library on an external HD as long as the HD is formatted correctly see: Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
However keep in mind that depending on the HD type and the way it is connected to your Mac performance may be an issue. For the best possible outcome the external drive should have a large cache, high RPM and be connected via firewire.
The other option to explore is to put the masters on an external drive and keep the library on the internal. This will give you relatively good performance using a standard USB drive.

  • Can I add just one folder from an external hard drive to the Time Machine Backup?

I have TM set up to backup my main iMac hard drive.  I have an external hard drive with photos on it that I would like to add to the TM backup as well.  Not the whole hard drive - just one folder with current photos I am working on.

it wouldn't let me "open up" the hard drive to see the contents
Select the volume icon in the Finder and open the Info window. Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your administrator password when prompted. Check the box at the bottom marked
              Ignore ownership on this volume
    Close the Info window.

  • How can I use my time capsule as an external hard disk?

    Hi ,
I hav en Airport Extreme 3 TB. I have done the setup. And it seems to working well. But I also want to use it as an external hard drive. When I go finder Shared folder I could not see Data folder in it. I have this screen. How can I see that folder.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I count 36 characters in your TC name.. This is not good.
Please reduce the name to somewhere less than 10 characters if possible.. 20 at most.
    No spaces, pure alphanumeric.
See C9 here for why the present name is bad.
    http://pondini.org/TM/C9.html
Also if your wireless name is the same.. change it to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric as well.
Then manually mount your TC disk.
In finder use top menu, Go/Connect to server.
Type in AFP://TCname.local (TCname is your new short name. Local is the default domain).
Or it can be even better to use IP if that doesn't change.. ie TC is in router mode.. and by default is 10.0.1.1 then
    AFP://10.0.1.1
Then apply and you will be asked for the TC disk password.. default is public but whatever it is you set. Make sure you save it in your keychain.
The TC data share should then mount.
And small comment about using the TC for files..
TC is designed for Time Machine. It is not a NAS.. it has no backup.. it is slow to spin up and fast to spin down. Using live libraries will result in corruption and loss of your entire library in the case of iphoto.
Please be very careful. Do not jump in and think very carefully. Time Machine cannot backup any network drives including the TC. You are going to have issues with backup if the TC is only location for your files.. it is unsuitable for this. CCC can backup to another drive.. but where will that be.. USB plugged into TC you will experience new visions of pain and suffering as the backup takes almost as long as digestion by a Sarlacc.

  • Disk Utility stopped repairing "disk1s2"-a partition from an external hard disk

I bought a new Seagate Go Flex Desk 2TB exernal HD.Three days ago one of the three partitions(1.7TB) on this HD stopped working, when i tried to repair the volume in Disk Utility it stoped repairing, showing the following message-
    Verify and Repair volume “disk1s2”
Checking file systemChecking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
    Checking catalog file.
    Invalid sibling link
    Rebuilding catalog B-tree.
The volume   could not be repaired.
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Now the problem is after starting it only shows the other two partitions,in Disk Utility the problematic volume no longer bears the name given by me and shows 'disk1s2' in dimmed letters. I had some nessesary piece of data in that volume. My question is-
1.Is there any oter software that i can try to fix with?
2.If i reformat the disk and ceate the partition again would it work smoothly?
3.there were power cut off 7-8 times when using the HD,if it's the reason ten why the other two partitions are working properly? One of these volumes used to contain Time Machine Back-up.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

I have (kind of) a simmilar problem with yours, does DiskWarrior really helped?? Since it's not free, is there any other program that might helped ???

  • HT201269 How can I backup to store iphone on an external hard disk drive?

I tried to backup my iphone, my pc did not have the storage, and I don't know how to find the select for external HDD. I dont know if this is possible to backup to external drive. I lost some of my phone contacts and now the contact list is in some alphabetical order that I find difficult to read.
Can you tell me how to?
I have Itunes program saved on my laptop but there is not enough storage space available to backup all my iphone info to the laptop, that is why I want to direct the storage onto the HDD.
Do I need to download Itunes again and select save to my HDD to get the extra space?

You just have to find the backup file on your computer and moveor copy  the file to where you want it but remember if you want to restore from that backup itunes needs to be able to find it so you will need to make sure it is in its orginal location

  • How can I get my LaCie external hard disk icon to reappear on my desktop?

The iMac discussion section does not seem open to me asking this question. It's geared to the Intel Macs or other categories which do not allow for me to type in the following question:
    Bottom Line Question:
How can I get my La Cie external hard disk icon to re-appear on my desktop?
    Background:
    I clicked Go > Computer
At that point there the usual set of icons in the far left hand column, including one for my LaCie external hard disk. Near that icon there was a dark upturned truncated/shortened arrow. I absent-mindedly clicked on that dark arrow, and at that moment I could hear my LaCie external hard drive power down; I heard the sound of hardware powering down.
The LaCie external hard drive is sitting right next to my iMac and its blue light is ON so I know that at very least I didn't turn it off.
    But where is it?
And how can I get it to reappear on my desktop?
Right now when I click onto Go > Computer, the LaCie external hard drive disk is NOT THERE.
    Thank you.
    Lorna in Southern California

James, yes. I put the question in the iMac section and did get some solutions. My LaCie external hard drive is back now. I was aware that the arrow is connected to Eject actions, but was concerned when I went to Finder Preferences and selected the LaCie to show up on the Desktop, and its icon did not show up on the desktop. I hope you and your family are enjoying the weekend, James. But how could you not: You have little Kate there with you. Lorna in Southern California

  • Partition external hard disk to back up

I want to know how much space the back up usually requires. I will partition my 1TB external hard disk to back up my mac but don't know how much space I should save for it. Thank you very much.

What type backup are you refering too?
I am assuming you want to take a full system copy before you upgrade to Mavericks?
Select the disk that you want to backup (probably called 'Macintosh HD') in the Finder, click 'File > Get info…' from the menu. It will calculate how much disk space is used. You will want that amount plus a few more GB's at the very least (+20% extra is a good idea if you have it - it means you can boot from it in the future if needed).
I would stongly suggest you make sure that the backup is bootable after you copy over your data, that way if Mavericks doesn't suit your needs you can copy the entire sytem back into place.
    P.S.
How are you planning to backup?
This has some info on the tools you can use in the third paragraph…
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2056563/should-you-do-a-clean-install-of-maveric ks.html
If you are refering to a Time Machine backup, it will also use the same amount of space as the main disk plus any other internal disks, however it will grow as files change & it isn't bootable.

  • Finder cannot searching for NTFS formatted external hard disk

    MacBookAir,1.8GhZ,Memory 4GB1600 MHz DDR3

Finder  can show and open the files from the external hard disk but can not searching for the files.

Tuxera or paragon will give you write access, but I don't know if that will allow Spotlight to work on those drives.
A brief experiment suggests that Spotlight does not index an NTFS volume driven by Paragon NTFS. I don't have a copy of Tuxera to test.
Sorry, cchaikittiporn. Paragon does not seem to be a solution for your issue.

  • Can i make (for example) 3 partitions on my external Hard Drive, and make different formatations for each, so i can share files of one of them in a pc and mac?

    Hello ...
My name is Rui, i'm from Portugal ... (so please be patiente with my english, it can get a bit confusing)
so... first of all ... i have to say ... i'm still a pc user ... i don't have a Mac ... yet ... they are sold out right now in the shops near me ... i am waitting for them to arrive so i can pick up mine ... (i wish in a couple of days i will be entering the Mac world ....) ... i'll be picking the "entery" iMac model, the 21,5'', i5 with 500gb hard disk ... well .. i know it's the cheapest one (i hope it is a good machine tho) ... but it's my entering Mac world too (my only apple products till know were the ipod ...) ... one of my concerns are being the 500gb hard drive ... that for my pc experience is a little bit short ... that makes me a little scared (but paying 300e for the next model to have a 1tb disk, it's not a good option for me right now) ...
    so..
I've been reading a lot about iMac's ans OS X so i can get familiar with this all new world ...
and i couldn't get any answer for some of my doubts... so i decided to ask you Mac Users ..
My idea is to have an external HD to store files (and not to fill the 500gb of the iMac) ... and i am wondering if it would be possible to make this ...
    - make three partitions on the external Hard Drive and
    - the first be formatted in Mac OS extended (journaled) mode
    - the second on fat 32 - so i can store and share files with a mac or pc
    - third be reserved for  Time Machine
i wonder would that be possible... or would make sort of incompabilities ... would it work all well ?
    hummm ...
I hope someone can help me with this ...
... if it is a silly question ... sorry ... but please remember, i've never had a Mac computer (i'm waiting for my 1st iMac to be available on store) ... so a lot of things are "flying" in my head right now ...
... and of course .. sorry for my english ... i hope you all understood me ...
thanks (obrigado) a lot for your patience...
    Rui from Portugal

    Hi! Dwagner, once again ...
I've just got my Mac last friday ... i'm still getting amazed with this new world to me ... eehe .. quite different ... but
... "i can do it, i can do it" eheeh
i'm in that period that a new question appears at almost every mouse click ... lol
so ... can you help me (once again) ..
you said you had your hard drive with this settings...
"You can partition for OSX (extended Journal) - read/write by only OSX or read only by Windows via BootCamp
You can partition for Windows (NTFS) - readable by only Windows
OR - you can format with ex-FAT and this is read/write capable for both operating systems."
how did you formated the partition in NTFS ? ... on the mac? using the "disk utility" ? or did you use another program to do so ...?
i hope i'm not "bugging" you ... this might be a silly question for most of people ... but right now ... it's a major question for me ... ehehe
    once again Obrigado (Thank You)
