Can I fully utilize DDR2 800MHz memory on my Compaq 6720s laptop?

Hello,
I have Compaq 6720s (KU232ES) laptop (with integrated graphics).
CPU: Intel Core2Duo T5470
RAM: DDR2 PC-6400 800MHz MB: based on GM965 Express chipset.
On intel site I can see that both given CPU and MB chipset supports FSB800, but in spite of 800MHz system memory installed I can see in CPU-Z that it works with 667MHz frequency.
Really, in quickspecs it is mentioned that DDR2-533/667 are supported, nothing about 800.
I can't find related BIOS settings and can't find any BIOS update fixing this.
I'm wondering why I can't fully utilize DDR2-800 taking into account that all(?) relevant laptop nodes support this frequency?
Can somebody explain this to me please?
Thank you

Hi,
Please let me take and example: you have a fast car but the road allows only slower cars to run. What you can do ? You have to buy slower car (or waste money with fast car) or you have to build a new road.

  • PC2-6400 ddr2 800mhz memory running at 667mhz

I have the T9500 800mhz cpu in the dv9700 pavillion laptop. I don't have the options in the Bios to change the speed of the memory, although it seems that the memory should be running at 800mhz and not 667mhz. Does anybody know how to change this??

    Hi:
    That is correct.
The mobile intel version of the 965 chipset only runs the memory at 667 MHz and the desktop version of the 965 chipset runs the memory at 800 MHz.
A little known fact but it is what it is.  See page 12 of the datasheet below.

  • Can I install the ddr2 pc5300 memory from my Mac Pro 1,1 in a Mac Pro 3,1 that requires ddr2 pc6400?

I have replaced a Mac Pro 1,1 with a used Mac Pro 3,1. I am trying to canibalize as much as I can. Will the slower RAM from the 1,1 work in the 3,1? Dare I just stick it in and try, or might I cause damage?

I don't quite understand. I do plan to try installing the old ddr2 pc5300 667 from my Mac Pro 1,1 into my Mac Pro 3,1 one pair at a time, just to confirm each pair is in working order and happy in its new home. I have 8x2 GB of RAM I hope to move.
I am uncertain what you have said from there. Yes, the cost would be cheap, free in fact! Is this what you meant? You had suggested buying 667 from Amazon, or similar -- but I don't need. And you have made the point that 8 DIMMs is beneficial--which I will have covered. (great tip)
I think what I am most uncertain about is the comment about what will run cooler. Maybe you mean if I purchased newer memory, the design has become more efficient, so the expense is worth considering?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Can't unplug fan from motherboard - compaq 6720s laptop

i’m disassembling this laptop to clean the fan. i’m unable to remove the cpu fan’s connector plug from the motherboard socket. it simply will not slide out horizontally as it’s supposed to. is there perhaps some undocumented catch-type mechanism i first need to release, or something like that?

hmmmm. sound card and video card drivers might be worth checking on:
iTunes for Windows: Additional troubleshooting for burning issues
Updating the drivers on your Windows PC
if you're uncertain whether or not any upgrades are applicable to your configuration, it might be best to check with the Averatec reps again.
another thought ... in addition to the 4450 sometimes being caused by a higher burn speed that the configuration is comfortable with, i've also seen it show up if a configuration wasn't liking a particular type of disk media.
do you have any samples of other media available, if so, can you get a burn with one of them, or does it throw the 4450 no matter what you try with her?

  • Can i use 5.1 speakers for my compaq 6720s laptop? please be kind to write at least a word

my sound card driver is -- soundmax intergrated digital hd audio .....my laptop is compaq 6720s running on vista 32bit
i have only one slot for sound output(headphone)......and have 3 cables from the 5.1 sound system........... please tell me what to do

    Cameron,
It all depends on the audio content. The iMac will support 5.1 audio as long as you are using the optical output. As for the songs...most music isn't encoded in 5.1 so the true features of your system you probably won't see (or rather hear). Certain newer CD's often come with a DVD that has 5.1 content on them, have you tried to listen to them?

  • Can I use 32GB of 800MHz internal memory in my MacPro1,1?

    Can I install 32GB of DDR2 800MHz memory [ or said differently ... can I install more then 16 GB's of internal 800MHz memory-sticks in my MacPro1,1, built 12-2008 ], where it now runs on 9GB's of 667 MHz memory-sticks?
I'm confused, because I hear store-people saying that Apple only supports 16GB's of internal 667MHz memory in case of my machine (a MacPro1,1 from 12-2008), but at the same time inside several Apple-forums I read that most certainly 32GB's of 800MHz sticks would be supported, in other words ... the machine would be able to work with that kind and amount of memory.
I'd like to hear from some people who KNOW about these things.
    Thanks beforehand people !
Kind regards, Arthur Flederus from Holland

    has always supported 32GB
It uses 667MHz DDR2. As long as 800MHz is backward you are fine
4GB DIMMs cost a lot more - Amazon has 2x2GB FBDIMM 667 $54 the set, or $220 for 16GB - may not be on UK store but is on USA site.
    2008 = MacPro3,1 that used 800MHz FBDIMMs, has 1600MHz bus.
You are mixing things around here. No 1,1 was built past Jan 2008.
www.macsales.com/memory/macpro or check Crucial or Kingston UK just use their guided memory recommendation
If it was me, given the price and support, I'd try to get US$600 for what you have and buy a 2010 model - again Apple Store ref'd "specials" are hard or non-existant outside USA but $1869. Then 32GB is only $300. Not $1200.

  • Can i install 800MHz memory on my mid 2007 imac?

I'd like to upgrade the memory on my imac: 24 inc mid 2007 (iMac7,1).
It currenlty have a 1GB stick and a 2GB stick.  Both 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM.  Can I install 2x2GB DDR2 of 800MHz?  and if so, would that be an performance improvement?
    Specs:
    24in iMac7,1
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz
    Bus Peed 800 MHz
Memory: 3GB (as above both 667MHz)
    Thanks

You are welcome. That is the same machine as mine (20" version). Although Apple rates it as accepting 4gB, outside vendors have tested it with 6gB. This happens quite often with quoted RAM quantities.
Maximum Memory     6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)

  • Qosmio F45-AV425 - Can I use 800Mhz memory modules

I'm planning to remove the standard 2gb that came with my laptop.
My question is since the fsb runs at 800mhz can i buy 4gb at 800mhz? (i dont know if the motherboard can take it).
If i can't do that then ill just buy 667mhz sodimm.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

i'm sorry but I don't understand. All i know is that the processor (Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 2.0 Ghz) has an 800mhz FSB, does this mean that it will work with 800mhz RAM? i thought it was up to the motherboard. Using Everest i got this: Supported FSB Speeds: FSB533,FSB667, FSB800.I'm guessing that means it can handle 800mhz memory dimms. is that right??
    Thanks
PS: dang... before it post i saw this other row: Supported Memory Types: DDR2-533 SDRAM, DDR2-667 SDRAM... im guess that definetly means it does not support ddr2-800 sdram... thanks again ill just buy 667mhz ram.

  • Can anyone help me with upgrading memory in my older iMac? I currently on have 1gb of memory so as you can imagine my machine is quite slow.

Can anyone help me with upgrading memory in my older iMac? I currently only have 1gb of memory so as you can imagine my machine is quite slow. I check in my system profiler and it shows I do have a memory slot open. It is using a DDR2 and I was told that the latest are DDR3 and I need to find out if I can run that on my model number. This info came from a tech guy at best buy.

That is what I needed.  You can upgrade to a maximum of 6gb of ram and need the following type:
200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  You can easily find it online, here is an example: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo_PC2-6400

  • K9N2 SLI using ddr2-1066 memory

I am about to purchase the K9N2 SLI motherboard and noticed it has a memory rating of 1.9v.
But when looking for ddr2-1066 memory to use with an AM2+ processor, all I can find is 2.1+v memory.
Msi says the board is rated for 1066 yet there doesn't appear to be any memory manufactured within that range. Anybody know if the 2.1v will work?
I didn't think you could use a higher rated voltage.

Quote from: Stu on 05-August-08, 06:25:23
Yes, it will work, if needed you'll be able to raise the memory voltage in BIOS settings.
No, it will not work. It won't even work with the updated bios version (3.3). I currently have this Motherboard and have been working with MSI to resolve this issue and one other issue.
I am currently running a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Black Edition. My memory is Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2 800 4x1GB. The memory is 4-4-4-12 at 2.1. The bios will not automatically set this and you have to manually set the timings and voltage and when you adjust the voltage higher than 1.9 it forces the memory to run at 400mhz rather 800mhz. So technically it will allow you to set the voltage higher, but it will only allow the memory to run at half speed. This motherboard also will not allow you to adjust the CPU multiplier. I have tried both the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition and the 5400+ Black Edition, and regardless of what you set it at, it will not take effect at all. I have tried both processors in a Gigabyte board and the Gigabyte board will allow you to adjust the Multiplier (CPU RATIO).
Also, if you attempt to run any memory that runs at 2.0 or higher, MSI will not provide you with technical Support.
MSI's response to my memory issue:
The memory you are using requires a voltage of 2.1v, the K9N2 SLI Platinum only supports up to 1.9v. We cannot assist you with this situation any further.

  • Unable to run 800Mhz memory on 975X Platinum PowerUp

    hi,
I can't get my MSI board to recognize my 800mhz memory, it runs at 667mhz although it's 2x1GB Corsair XMS2-6400 4-4-4-12 2.1v. If I run CPU-Z, the SPD shows everything correctly, but I had to change the timing values manually, it defaults to 5-5-5-15 if I select "by SPD" in the BIOS. I'm running version 7.2 of the BIOS.
I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to overclocking and tweaking BIOS settings, I just want it run at the correct speed and preferably not overclock at all.
    Thanks in advance,

This is what they are saying for the version II
    975X Platinum V.2
    http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=975X_Platinum_V.2&class=mb
    Main Memory
        • Supports 4 unbuffered DIMM of 1.8 Volt DDR2 SDRAM
    • Supports up to 8GB memory size
    • Support Dual Channel DDR2 533/677/800MHz and up
Due to the High Performance Memory design, motherboards or system configurations may or may not operate smoothly at the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) standard settings (BIOS Default on the motherboard) such as DDR2 voltage, memory speeds and memory timing. Please confirm and adjust your memory setting in the BIOS accordingly for better system stability.
    Example: Kingston HyperX DDR2-800 PC6400 operates at 2.0V, 4-4-4-12.

  • How much real world difference would there be between the 1600MHz memory of a 4,1 Mac Pro and the 800MHz memory of a 3,1 Mac Pro? My main app is multitrack audio with Pro Tools. Thanks so much.

How much real world performance difference would there be between the 1600MHz memory of a 4,1 Mac Pro and the 800MHz memory of a 3,1 Mac Pro? My main app is multitrack audio with Pro Tools. Thanks so much. The CPU speed of either one would be between 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz.

What are the differences.... firmware and build, there were tweaks to the PCIe bus itself. As a result 3rd party cards and booting is better.
Support in 5,1 firmware for more 56xx and W35/36xx processors. Also memory timing.
The 4,1 was "64-bit boot mode optional" and 5,1 was default. I don't know if there are changes but I assume so, even if it is not reflected elsewhere or in version number.
I don't know what the prices are but 2009, to buy one today, when the 2010 is $1800.
The 2008 of course was test bed for 64-bit UEFI and it sure seems even Lion and then ML are not as well engineered - outside of Linc who would be the least likely to have a problem.
I would assume 2010 has better support for 8GB and even 16GB DIMMs as well as for 1333MHz.
Nehalem family had only come out in fall 2008 and a lot of work went into making improvements well past 2009.
If you remember, there were serious heat problems with those and 10.5.7+ up thru 10.6.2 even with iTunes, audio, and hyperthreading and cores hitting and staying in 80*C range. That I assume was both poor code (sleep does not mean poke and ask constantly) as well as changes in SMC and kernel improvements, to work around. Microcode can be patched in firmware, kernel, by drivers and by code, but it is best when the chips and core elements don't need to be.
If someone is stretched, and can get 2009 for $1200 it might be a fine fit. That year offered the OEM GT120 which isn't really as nice and matched for today both OS and apps that rely on a GPU. And for odd reasons two such 120's don't work well in Lion+ but that is probably minor. Having the 5770 is just "nicer" though.
There are some articles about trouble booting with PCIe SATA/SAS/SSD and less trouble with 2010. Also support for graphic card and audio I think was one of those "minor" 5770 related support issues. But shows some small changes were made there too.
I wish someone would come out and pre-announce DDR4 + SATA3 along with PCIe 3.x (for bandwidth and more power per rail) along with say Ivy Bridge-E socket processors was going to be this summer's 3 yr anniversary and to replace the 2010 designed motherboard. But that is what is on Intel's and others drawing boards simmeringn in the pot.
