Can I get a replacement iPod?

I purchased a 4th gen iPod on the 8th of September last year, so it's still covered by the one year warranty.
About a month ago the iPod began to show these problems:
     -At times it will run slow. (This is the main problem)
     -I sometimes get problems with the camera, where if I record for more than about two minutes it will crash.
     -I also have a problem with the battery, where if I turn my iPod off, the battery runs out very quickly. I have since stopped turning it off.
     An example is: When I took the iPod to school, I would turn it off and when I got home the battery would be dead. But, if I leave it on for the day the
     battery still has a decent amount of charge.
I know I could just go to a tech shop and get the battery replaced, but the first problem I mentioned has become right annoying.
I'm wanting to get a replacement iPod, but am unsure how to go about it.
You see, these problems aren't something I can 'plan'. If I take it to the shop I purchased it from and they ask to see what I'm talking about, I can't just bring out my iPod and order it to malfunction. It happens randomly. So I'm worried that they won't be able to help me.
I know of an Apple store near me, if I had a letter or something from Apple, perhaps I could take it there and get a replacement without a hassle?
I'm pretty sure this is out of the question and I'm not expecting this; but am is it possible for me to get a money refund, so I could put in some extra money and get a 5th gen?

Depending on the extent of the damage, Apple may replace the iPod for a flat fee; see the Repair Pricing section here:

There are independent iPod repair services that may be able to repair the iPod for less. Do a web search for "ipod repair". Note, though, that if you elect to have the iPod serviced by an unauthorized shop, all further warranty will be void.

If defective, Apple will exchange the iPod at no cost unless they have been abused. That applies to Apple earphones too.

Some items come up in a search for Mac parts UK; whether or not they have
an exact part match for any vintage product has not been searched...
Most that I have looked into, show any battery "out of stock" &/or listed "used."
A good electronics shop with an understanding of how these batteries are wired
in their case (and any controller chip circuitry) should be able to install new cells
inside the case; however opening these may present a problem if done forcefully.

So far, I'd struck out searching; could be one may need to contact long standing

since these battery units have been refurbished before with new rechargeable cells.

FWIW, if you purchased the iMac in 2011 and purchased Applecare, you are covered for a total of 3 years. You mentioned yours expired in December 2013 - that cannot be unless you bought yours in 2010. If you bought it in December 2011, you should still be covered until December 2014 - if so, contact Apple/make a Genius Bar appointment quickly so the replacement is covered by the warranty. The hard drive replacement program might have expired, but as long as you're covered by Applecare, a drive replacement is covered.

With iPhone 4 Apple will not replace the screen. They will replace the entire iPhone 4. If you want the screen replaced on the same iPhone 4, you have to do it yourself.
