i have just got an ipod 1st gen for my littleboy but cant down load apps as it keeps telling us we need to update to 3.0 version does that mean you can only down load apps to a 3rd gen

You need to update the iOS on the iPod. The last update for the 1G iPod is 3.1.3 and you can get it here. It is a paid update. You may have to uses a different browser to geet the sublink to work properly.

If I may ask, why do you not just upgrade your iPod's operating system? Even the first-generation iPod touch can run iOS 3, and the 2nd-generation iPod touch can run iOS 4, though not all features work. Then you would have a much broader range of apps available to you.

Mate, this really isn't hard to understand.
I bought my ipod touch, have had apps on it since i bought it (i.e. sheep launcher free), they have always worked. I recently formatted my ipod and re-installed the 4.3 update, and as the posters here state, the apps which USED TO WORK FINE now say "requires ios5" or "requires ios 4.4" before downloading, both of which are incompatible with the ipod, making most of the apps that used to work fine completely unatainable.
Why are apps we have ALWAYS used now completely unavailable? Apple, are you really trying to deterr your customers into purchasing a newer device? Why would you want to intentionally annoy your clientele?
Fix this problem please, or you've lost a dedicated customer. I have over 5 ipods. I won't be buying another one if this kinda thing continues - you just forgot about your customers with older devices, i mean microsoft still produce updates for XP, an OS over 10 years old. Why can you not extend the same support for your older customers?

   iPod Touch (4th gen) does not suppport iOS7 and update (iOS 6.1.3) is the the last end of the line update for end of device.
   There is nothing you can do! . . . If you wan't iOS7, you must purchase iPod Touch (5th gen.).

Sorry to report, Apple is the only place you can get those apps, & Apple are no longer accepting apps with deployment targets earlier iOS versions.
That said, you might try contact the developers of those earlier apps to see what they say.

Sync them from your iTunes library:

You have your mute button on. In Settings check to see if you have Lock Orientation checked or Mute checked on the right hand side. If you have Mute checked, all you need to do is click the mute button above the volume control buttons on the upper right hand side of your iPad. If you have Lock Orientation checked in settings, you double click your home button and the most recent apps will appear. Swipe your finger to the right until the Mute icon appears on the left side. Touch it and you will unmute system sounds.
