Can I get around having to use iTunes for my iPad?

In short, I really dislike the software. It does nothing I want it to do and everything I don't want it to do.
What can I do to avoid the requirement of gunking up my laptop with the bloatware that is iTunes? Is there any alternative? Jailbreaking is most likely not an option.

Apple products in general are very locked down and controlled- not entirely safe but one has difficulty getting beyond what the designers want you to be able to do - especially on a tablet or phone where there is little space for competition. Hence the term jail-breaking comes into play. Steve Gibson of Security Now at TWIT.TV said he could hardly wait to get his hands on one of the new iphones to see how long it would take him to get around the fingerprint  "security" feature. But he is an expert.
Freedom comes with some risks of wading into deep water, but is available in Surface Pro. And  for the courageous who want control in their own hands with Open Source there are Android tablets, phones. And there are other systems - mostly sold in the UK and China - where one can do whatever one has in mind to do if one is clever enough.. It makes me feel very old but the last products mentioned are often used by the school kids in places like China and the UK. . they become really good programmers.
Microsoft products are typically designed for business use where people want some level of control, want efficiency to do what they want to do, and are willing to learn a little bit more to be able to do that. Typically speed, flexibility, and compatibility are more important than games, songs or movies. One wants to download customized information from the internet - articles, journals, newspapers and one wants access to the company data, memos, manuals and a way to post email, photos, some compact videos to a few key people (not the world).
IT people at companies wish to keep things locked down and easier/cheaper to manage so it is always a bit of a struggle to do your own thing. That you are annoyed with the waste of space and lack of control tells me you are either an exec, or will soon be one if you find workarounds. Chances are others are having the same difficulties in your company. Develop a realtionship with the IT people -- if they know you have a need for something they will sometimes help you to get it. So make a little specific list of what you don't like and what gets in your way,  and see what they can do for you.
Some really good reviews of  available products of most brands, what they will and won't do, can be found through the programs at TWIT.TV.  Tech News Today is a good place to jump in... one can get the programs via streaming or podcasts so one has a choice if a TV connection is not convenient or available. http://twit.tv/
My personal pet peeve with the newer products is the "gallery view" where everything is tiles and carousels. Ugh. Dizzying at best. I like a list tucked into a small space, I don't mind using a stylus and I really loved my  Axim 5 PDA with the touch screen (now obsolete but dang, it still works if "they" would just upgrade the software to new protocols - LOL). Even Netflix has done away with their wonderful sortable lists and moved over to tiling... Ugh. When I want a movie I want to be able to mine for it fast based on my own criteria, not to have to wade through many screens full of images with little or no info.

Unfortunately, I have a very similar problem. Since I upgraded to os 5.1 on my new iPhone 4S the reminders screen will not add new reminders or scroll up and down. What's more strange is the screen will still scroll side to side allowing access to the Completed list, and both the Completed list and Date functions work normally so this must be an upgrades glitch.

  • Is there any way to get around having to use iDVD to burn DVD?

Is there any way to get around having to use iDVD to export FCE to DVD?
I've been trying to burn a FCE2 sequence to DVD. A friend of mine told me all I had to do was put a blank DVD in, click on the icon on the desk top, export the sequence to Quicktime and drag the QT sequennce into the DVD icon and click burn.
Well something happened! But there's nothing on the DVD!! What am I doing wrong? I loathe iDVD. i don't want to author. I just want to burn the project on a DVD. Please advise. Thanks.

If you export a sequence at full resolution to can burn it onto a DVD as a data DVD, but this is for transportation purposes only. At full resolution the DVD, especially as it fills up, will not have sufficient throughput to sustain good playback of the material. That's why the material is encoded into MPEG-2 for DVD authoring. If you want to make a DVD for set-top playback it has to be authored to include the DVD format structure. There is no way around that. If you don't like iDVD, take a look at Final Cut Studio, you might prefer DVD Studio Pro. Or you might what to look at Roxio's Toast. It has basic authoring capabilities. Personally I don't think direct playback hardware solutions (except for seriously expensive ones) produce acceptable quality, but that's just me.

  • How can i get an older version of Ibooks for my Ipad 1?

how can i get an older version of Ibooks for my Ipad 1?
    Since I have Ibooks 3.0.2 I can't start Ibooks on my Ipad1.

For iBooks try downloading the current version on your computer's iTunes so that the app is in your purchase history. Then on your iPad go to the Purchased tab in the App Store app and see if you can download an older compatible version of it.
You can also try similar for the Kindle app - I don't know whether Amazon have made older versions of their app available in the store, so it may not work for that. If not, then as a work-around you could use their cloud reader 'app' : http://read.amazon.com - go to that site on Safari on your iPad and then create a homescreen shortcut for it (kindle cloud reader help)

  • How can I get album artwork without using iTunes on the computer?

I used touchcopy to copy the songs off my ipod touch onto my new computer, so i could then load them onto my ipod nano. I have got the songs on the nano, and theyre still on my touch, but there is no album artwork on either. For my nano, i can use iTunes, but the computer my touch is synced to is, well, dead. So, is there a way to get the album artwork back on my touch?
Also, on my nano, it doesnt have any of the artists or album (name) for the songs
    Thanks

    Hi Wickster,
I have found the following resource that may provide more help:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Add artwork to songs and other items
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12361
Additionally, you can instruct iTunes to search and download artwork from the iTunes Store. To do so, click File > Library > Get Album Artwork

  • Can I get a faster transfer using ethernet for an external HDD?

I have an early 2006 17" imac and am going to get an external HDD for backing up large amounts of photos. FW400 is pretty fast, but I'd was thinking that the gigabit ethernet would could be faster.
Is there a way to use ethernet to connect to an external HD and get faster than FW400 speeds?
    thanks.

    Smokerz wrote:
you could try for FW 800 and get close to 50M/sec
With a fast drive, FW800 is capable of 80 MByte/sec. However, the OP's
    iMac doesn't have FW800, only FW400. That's good for 35-40 MByte/sec
    sustained read/write speeds.
Even on a 1000 Mbps LAN, a NAS setup won't do much better -- and
    most are significantly slower:

  • Where can I get a nano SIM card tray for my ipad mini?.

I have broken mine and apple say they can't supply a replacement.

Just got off the phone to apple again, thought I'd give them one more try.
Now they are sending me a replacement. Why couldn't the previous person I spoke to do that?
I don't think they understood exactly what I needed first time round.
Still happy it's sorted, should be here in a few days.

    Perfect, thanks.
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

If the device is indicating to connect to iTunes, then it is in recovery mode. You will need the computer and iTunes to recover it. You can fix the iTunes to not sync to your device, but just let it recover the phone. I hope you would have a backup of your data in iCloud, since it is no longer available to you on the phone.

If you have an iBook G4, (PPC) you can't do much.
But if that is a MacBook (intel) you may be able to
upgrade the OS X, if the hardware is up to it...
Since there were about nine different build models
of MacBook (not powerpc iBook) to identify what
one you have would be the first step to knowing
what OS X and RAM upgrades it could use.
If the computer is not already at OS X 10.6.8,
it can't go online to get or use OS X 10.7.5. So,
when you more accurately describe the 'Book,
    detailed information is available.
When you find the serial number, there is a web
page that can be used to identify by serial no.
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
That'd be a first step. Or even the Model number
which should be visible on the outer case by hinge.
    Good luck & happy computing!

If you see a dialog telling you the app is not avaiable, then it's not available.
And keep in mind, your credit or debit card credentials must be associated with the same country where you reside.
"Although you can browse the iTunes Store in any country without being signed in, you can only purchase content from the iTunes Store for your own country. This is enforced via the billing address associated with your credit card or other payment method that you use with the iTunes Store, rather than your actual geographic location."

Is this how you do it?
    1. Turn off iPad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, slide to turn off.
    2. Connect USB cable to computer
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune (make sure you have the newest version of iTune)
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad
