Can I get away with 150ppi?

Hi,
Im designing a poster (A3). As I know 300ppi is the acceptable standard for high quality printing but Its not a simple task to find materials in that resolution. What you think…can I get away with 150 ppi instead? This poster is for educational proposes only.
Thank
S

150 ppi will not hold < 12 pt type very well. Of course a raster doc won't hold it well at all if you're printing to a low linescreen.
All answers depend on your exact printing process.
But if you can keep the elements in your design that should be vector (traditionally logos and type) as vector, then cheating to 150 ppi will be OK.
I would create your document at the highest image resolution and upsample files. No sense in throwing away info on the files that have it. Of course I don't have to upsample much as I never steal from the internet and retch high-quality images. So someone else might be able to speak to the advantage/disadvantage of this.

  • What kind of video intro can I get away with?

I would like to have a video of about the size and quality of this apple Final Cut Studio NAB video.
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/action/?movie=nab
Only not nearly as long. Well under a minute for sure! Can I get away with this in iweb with autoload setup for the initial splash screen of my website. I'll be using a .mac account.
Is there a way to make it have some type of loading indicator and a skip past intro thing? Will it take 3 days to load? Advise? Thanks!

    Hello John,
The biggest factor on whether people will watch your movie intro is dependent on their connection speed. If all your viewers have cable/dsl then it probably isn't a problem, if you are getting lots of low speed visitors then they won't take the time to let it load—probably.
If you don't already have Statcounter ( http://www.statcounter.com/ ) and or Goggle Analytics ( http://www.google.com/analytics/ ) you should get both. This will allow you to monitor your visitor demographic, giving you the ability to design your site to the needs of the majority.... plus it is fun to see hits come in from across the country and around the world.
Any how, I degress. Even if all your users have fast connection speeds you will probably have better luck with a flash movie which yields a higher quality to lower size ratio then the Quicktime format. Plus, more people have flash installed on their computers then Quicktime. If you don't have a flash converter you can get a resonably priced conveter at http://www.verticalmoon.com/products/video2swf/video2swf.htm
The only problem with using flash (I currently still use Quicktime) is that you will have to add your movies in post publish. Hope that helps.

  • Boot Camp what Windows disk can i get away with?

looking to put boot camp on our i-mac, also want to upgrade our windows laptop to windows 7.
Do i have to buy the Ultimate or Professional (windows 7) version or can i get away with Windows 7 Home Premium?
    Thanks

The number of physical processors (sockets) is limited to only one with Home Premium. Professional or Ultimate allow for 2.
You could have Mac Pro 2006-7 with two dual-core processors and need Professional x64 to use both and to use more than 2GB.

  • How can Nokia get away with it?!

Words cannot express how angry I am today, Nokia are taking every opportunity to make sure I never buy one of their handsets EVER again.
A few days ago I discovered the new v5 firmware was available for my N70, fantastic I thought, perhaps this will finally solve the problems I have with my phone, constantly resetting itself, not being able to enable SMS delivery reports, not being able to manually select a network, dropping calls when switching between 3G/2G, the list goes on..
I call Phonezone in Newton Abbot, my nearest service center, and ask them if they have the new firmware for the N70, yes they say, are you sure its v5 you have I ask, yes they say. Great. So today I make the 60mile round-trip to Newton to have my phone upgraded. I hand my handset over and come back for it 45 minutes later, all seems to be OK, but it still hasn't fixed the SMS reports or network selection problem, then I think to check the firmware version, low-and-behold, they have simply reflashed it wih version 3.
I head back to the shop, explain I already had version 3 and wanted version 5, the guy says he thought he had done that, and when I show him the version display on the handset he mumbles about some problem with 2 different versions of the generic software. I ask if he will put v5 on for me now, but he says he's now too busy, but he can do it if I leave my phone over the weekend, I can't be without my phone for that long and don't live in the area, so I say no, his only other alternative was for me to come back the next week.
So to summarise, I went 60miles, spent £15 on fuel, £2 on parking and £3 on coffee while I waited to have my phone reflashed with exactly the same thing as it came with. I could have stayed at home and achieved the same by doing a hard-reset.
Why is it Nokia persist to offer upgrades in this ridiculous manner? With my Sony Ericsson I could have sat down with a (free!) cup of coffee and done the upgrade online from the comfort of my chair in under 10 minutes. With Nokia I will have had to travel for 2 hours, 120 miles, at a cost of nearly £40 just to have a phone that is under warranty flashed with a firmware that may or may not fix my problems!
Absolutely ridiculous. Get this sorted Nokia, you've already lost me as a future customer.

It's not this single event, it's Nokia's whole after-sales support arrangement that has me annoyed.
The support and repair system is completely decentralised, with seemingly random shops having Service Center status, which is why you end up with situations where big cities like Exeter don't have a single Nokia service shop but tiny towns like Newton Abbot do. This de-centralisation leads to a complete breakdown in policy enforcement and standards.
The previous time I was getting the firmware upgraded I phoned round several service centres, one said they couldn't upgrade N70s without sending them away for 10 days, another said they would but they would not install the generic firmware for me (as I was on 3 at the time), another said they would swap the firmware over to generic but for £20, then final one I called said they would do it for free. These discrepancies becomes more evident in the actual service centres, some seem to be very professional, know exactly what they are talking about and what they are doing, others seem to know very little about the phones and make up policy on the spot.
Two of the service centres I have visited have been very organised, given me a receipt for my phone, had me fill in proper Nokia staionary forms and generally been professional, the others I have visited have not given me a receipt for my phone, even on request, not asked me to fill in forms, and not really seemed to know what was happening.
As for charges, I have been told on seperate occasions (sometimes by the SAME service centre) that firmware upgrades are:
    - free under warranty
    - free under warranty if there is problem with the handset
    - £10 under warranty, £20 if not
    - £20 regardless of warranty status.
And as for changing firware variant some of the replies I've had:
    - we cannot change firmware variants, it is illegal
    - we can change the variant but it will cost you £20
    - we can change the variant for free as part of a normal upgrade
What is the correct policy?! I would say to anyone who's service centre tries to charge them for an upgrade, just phone around, eventually you will find one that will do it for free!
Then there is the attitude of the staff, as before, some are very nice and understand that performing firmware upgrades is part of their duty as service centres and they do it when you ask, as quickly as possible. Others seem to take the attitude that firmware upgrades are a 'favour' they are doing for you, that because you're not handing over any money they can make you wait or refuse to do it.
Having been a Sony Ericsson user for many years this system just completely baffles me. SE have an expansive support website for every phone they make, with latest firmware, patches, new applications, tools, FAQq, Tips and Tricks and troubleshooting guides. All this can be done from the website, even the firmware upgrades. SE's ethos was very much one of allowing the owner of the phone to have access to the latest upgrades as and when they want. Nokia seem to keep firmware upgrades almost a secret, then make it hard to get them when the are available. Your average Nokia user, who doesn't use websites like this, has no idea that upgrades are even available.

  • Why is Verizon so vile, and how can you get away with it?

Just got off the phone with someone on my 5th call to Verizon customer service on the same issue. They promised me additional data, for a price, then failed to add that data to my account. The first two calls they promised all was good and it would get applied on the next month. 3 more calls later I'm told it was never added, and that I'm out of luck. Seriously! I've now spend hours on this, and now I'm told to pound sand?
Previously, we also returned a device to verizon, that they said they never received. When I told them I would take them to small claims, she put me on hold, came back a few minutes later, then said that they got the device back? Wait I've been calling for months on this issue and the problem above and she magically finds it in 2 minutes. Just proves how crooked your company is.
I've posted about this on Facebook, and lots of my family and friends have had simlar experiences. I used to have t-mobie, and they were awesome. Just because yor the biggest today, doesn't mean that will be the case forever. Keep treating your cutomers like this and see where they end up.
Shame on Verizon, as it's a terrible terrible company.

  • I am thinking of swapping to FInal Cut Pro X.  Can I get away with buying a 2010 Mac Pro to use?

Would you recommend eight or twelve cores?  Is the speed that important?  How much memory?  I read so much conflicting information.  Sites that say anything over eight cores isn't worth it.  Or you should only use six outof the eight memory slots.  Or a single 3.33 quad core is better than 2.4 with eight cores.
I will be editing 1920x1080 60p either 35Mbps MPEG4 or 28Mbps AVCHD.  Typically a single camera.  Sometimes a multi camera shot.
I thought I would ask the Apple forum.  I have read the minimum requirements for the software.  But I know it is better to talk to people that actually use the product.

For what your editing and with only a single avchd camera, I would go for fewer cores and a higher cpu.
A 12 core would be overkill and would probably give you slower  performance in tasks not directly related to export rendering.
A 4 core 3.33 quad core is absolutely faster than a 8 or even 12 core 2.4 in all tasks that don't use many cores. And Most tasks don't. But if given a choice, I prefer a six or eight core rather than a 4 core and would recommend enough memory and the highest cpu you could afford.
16 gigs or more of memory should be good and remember the graphics card. FCP X really takes advantage of the newer OpenCL cards that were recently released for Mac from ATI and Nvidia.

  • To save time, could I get away with just using ProRes Proxy?

Might be a dumb question.  But please play along with me...
I've been battling with FCP-X since it first came out.  Beach balls, crashes, failed auto saves, you name it.  Sluggishness is my middle name.  But I think it might be because I'm trying to force too much quality through my older, less powerful machines and my little firewire 400 hard drive.  All three of my Mac are 3-4 years old, all are from the old "Core 2 Duo" era (not quad core processors), and are all maxed out at 4GB of RAM.  While I've read that many people are having performance problems with FCP-X even on brand spankin' new suped-up Mac Pros with lots more horsepower than I'm running, I've long thought that my machines and their lack of power by today's standards may be at the heart of my sluggishness problem, especially given that most of the material I work with is shot in 1080 HD.  (I've never actually tested it in FCP-X, but I'm assuming that things would speed along more like I've been used to in the past if I would just do everything in Standard Definition 480, but that ain't gonna happen.)
Like many, I shoot most everything in 1080 HD (usually 24p, sometimes 30), unless I'm occasionally shooting 720 HD at 60i for later slowing down to slo-mo.
Here's my question:  Most everything I edit is for web delivery, and 99 percent of it is for my own use (not clients).  Mostly podcast-like stuff, although occasionally I'll create something for my business website.  Most of what I do is talking head type stuff, not a lot of motion (except for the 720/60i slo-mo stuff, which usually has some motion, which is why I shoot it at 60i for slowing down).  Most of what I shoot is green screen talking heads, intended to be keyed in front of some innocuous background like some of the generators in FCP-X.  I want it to look good.  Even great.  But given the limitations of power on my machines, I also don't want to invest an eternity in rendering and processing time.  The work I'm doing with video just isn't that important.  It's mostly for grins.
Until last night, I had been working exclusively in ProRes422 (aka "Optimized").  But last night I shot some footage and imported it into FCP-X, encoding it ONLY in ProRes Proxy.  And frankly, I couldn't discern any difference.  It looked every bit as good as the 422 stuff I'd shot before.  There was absolutely no difference to my naked eye.  That said, the footage I shot last night to test this out was not shot in front of the green screen (I'll test that out today or tonight), so maybe the Proxy footage won't key as well.  (I've been stunned at how good the keyer is in FCP-X, but up to this point I've only been keying ProRes422 footage, not Proxy.)  But really, based on just eyeballing the footage, I couldn't tell the difference between the Proxy footage and all the other footage I'd shot previously that had been imported and converted to "Optimized" ProRes422.
I'm not looking to deliver anything for broadcast television (if I were, I'd for sure use 422).  I'm not doing any feature film type stuff.  My video work consists mainly of stuff just for me, for my own personal amusement (and for the amusement of anyone who might watch it on the web).  It's intended for YouTube, Vimeo, or occasionally (in smaller dimensions than 1920x1080) for deployment on my company website.  Mostly, it's just me doing podcast-type stuff.  Occasionally I'll shoot and edit something for church, or for friends.  I like to think the production values of my stuff tend to be higher than, say, the footage Aunt Delores shot at Uncle Ralph's birthday party (okay, A LOT higher than that!).  But my stuff isn't going to air on "Good Morning Flatbush" either (unless, on the off chance it should happen to go viral).
So let me make my question as clear as possible:  Could I not get away with just using ProRes Proxy throughout my entire work flow, end to end, never switching over to ProRes 422 even when exporting?  Honestly, it has taken hours just to render the keyed green screen footage on a 15 minute video, and just the other night, it took the better part of 4 hours (after it was already rendered) to export a 15 minute ProRes422 sequence to YouTube (and then the darn thing timed out, essentially wasting all my time).  I'd rather just stay in Proxy the whole way through if doing so would streamline my workflow without compromising too much quality in the "look" of the video.  Based on my very limited use of Proxy (just testing it out last night for the first time), I couldn't tell the difference.  Maybe for web deployment, Proxy is all I really need.
Have any of you just stayed in Proxy the whole way through, never switching to 422 even when exporting?  Might this be an acceptable work flow for some of us, especially those of us on older, less powerful machines?  Is this a viable solution?  Do any of you work this way?  What's your level of satisfaction?
    Thoughts?

A lot of what I'm shooting is being shot on a Canon XA-10.  Some (and certainly all of the 720 footage, but some of the 1080) is shot on a 7D.  And still more is shot on either an iPhone 4S, or even on a Flip Ultra (720p, 30fps).
Most is shot on the XA-10.
What I'm trying to avoid is the excessive render times (doesn't the ProRes 422 footage have to render as well?), and the ridiculously long times it takes to export.  Would all that not be reduced significantly by sticking to Proxy the whole way?  And what would the trade-off be?  I mean, I honestly can't see any discernible difference.  Maybe I will when I try to pull a decent key.  (Haven't gotten that far yet in my Proxy experimentation.)
Of course, editing in Proxy and outputting using 422 requires that FCP-X encode to BOTH when importing, right?  Doesn't that add yet another bit of time to the overall process?
I'm trying to streamline, and to reduce the overall amount of time I'm spending doing this stuff.

  • Somehow Yahoo has "adopted" my firefox, and I can't get away from it. can you tell me how to remove it?

suddenly when I click on firefox, it comes up with Yahoo as an overlay. Says Yahoo on top right, and the first window is now yahoo instead of my own home page and I can't get away from it. how do I remove yahoo?

First thing to do is to install this extension.
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/
It will "do its thing" automatically, then remove itself after a Firefox restart.
Then if that Yahoo homepage comes back after a Firefox restart or a Windows boot or restart, see us for further "fixes"; ''BTW, Firefox does come with a Yahoo search engine.''
It depends upon what Malware was installed and how deeply.

Hi, I’ve recently bought an iPad2 and can’t get connected with AppStore or iTunes, when I tap on these icons a grey page pops up saying is loading but never opens the page, no failure message is displayed, it just keep saying is loading.
Apparently it is not an issue with wifi since Safari, You Tube and Maps work well, I’ve tried some of the tips, e.g. log off/on my Id, change password but no one worked.
Your help will be highly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Luis.

Try a reset. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider.

The only other thing I can suggest is to use the Repair option for iTunes.
Download the iTunes programme (do not uninstall your current iTunes) and then "install" the new copy. At some stage you should see an option to "install" or "Repair". Take the Repair option.
Once you've done that, if you still have a problem, I don't know what else to suggest, except to search through the discussions to see if anyone else has had the problem and managed to fix it.

I have problem with my iphone 4s my battery is not keeping charge. how can I get help with this one? it is less than a year that I purchased this cell.

I would like to know the answer to that one.  I realized this was happening just after upgradeing my iOS to 6.  Then when I looked up my purchase date, I was about 5 days past my one year warranty.  So I'm dead in the water.  Apple will replace the battery, but it will be about $80+.  I took it to the Apple store, and they checked a bunch of stuff, but said that it seemed ok.  I'm debating getting a battery for a more reasonable price off of ebay.  But if it's the iOS thats draining the battery, then I'm not going to be able to help it.  I wish I knew a better way to tell if its the battery, the phone, or the iOS.

Yo Chris. I've been following your answers to different threads and quite frankly, you're very keen in answering everybody regarding this stupidity that Apple has brought upon its customers. Kudos to you. But the problem is, most of the time, in some devices, your solution doesn't work because the NONE option is not there. The same goes for me.
Meanwhile, I found a temporary workaround for the iPhone 4s, iPad 2 and iPod Touch 4th Gen.
Register a free Apple ID from the iCloud Settings.
Go to Settings>iCloud>Account>Tap Payment Information on the Storage Plan Category.
Fill in the other boxes and choose "None" on Credit Card Information.
That's it! Hope I helped those who still couldn't find the "None" Option.
Must be running IOS 5.0.1 though, else there would be no iCloud.
