Can I get mac os x 10.6 on my early model 2008 macbook?

I have a 2008 macbook, early kind thats plastic. Im upgrading my hard drive to a 100gb 7400 rpm hitachi hard drive. I currently have mac os x 10.5.8 on my hard drive now. I want to know if when I get the new hard drive if I can install mac os x 10.6 on there? Or is my computer not capable of that since it is the older version during 2008?

Yes your MacBook model 4,1 can handle 10.6 with no problems. The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
The maximum OS for the model 4,1 is 10.7 Lion.
Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

Editting PDF documents that were created by a MAC doesn't work because of font incompatability.  How can we get MAC fonts and load in our Adobe Acrobat Pro 9?

If it's a Mac font and you're on Windows, you can't. If you are also on a Mac, you'll need to purchase the fonts (fonts are generally non-transferable, like software. One of the reasons pdf exists), install them and try your edits.
But it's best to edit the original document and create a new pdf when finished.

  • How can I get Mac mail to open winmail.dat attachments on lion 10.7.3

How can I get Mac mail to open letter attachments winmail.dat??   (Lion 10.7.3) Any help appreciated...

    Sorry peterskine,
it's true in part. There's more then one article on the subject "Recipients receive a winmail.dat attachment":
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/outlook-help/recipients-receive-a-winmail-dat- attachment-HA010153018.aspx?CTT=1
The odd thing is that my colleague and me use the same release mountain lion and we received the same email from someone on Outlook2007. He received the mail with the attachment, whilst I saw a "Winmail.dat". It already happened to me on snow-leopard, some month ago. Up til today I don't know what the difference between our machines is.
But it is interesting: the same OS, the same mail-clients (Apple Mail) and still different results.
Note: on my machine it used to work properly. It just suddenly happened that I started to receive winmail.dat files in stead of proper attachments.
When I have more time on hand, I cant try to find out why this happens.

Can't get MAC to shut down and start up via the schedule button in system preferences energy saver. Is there another way?

    Try this to start:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Where can I get Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7?

I downloaded Adobe Photoshop Lightroom4 then I was told that I need Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7 in order to use it. My Mac is Mac OS X 10.5.8. I asked where I could find the appropriate version here : https://discussions.apple.com/message/18754476?ac_cid=op123456#18754476
I bought the one my advisor recommended, but it was a wrong version and I still need Mac OS X v10.6.8. or 10.7.
    1. How can I return the disc I bought?
    2. Where can I get Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7, NOT ANY other version?

    1. Ask the seller for a refund.
    2. You need to purchase the Mac OS X 10.6.3 DVD or Mac OS X 10.7 flash drive from a source such as the online Apple Store. Any Mac OS X 10.6.8 install DVDs you may come across are machine specific and can't be used to upgrade.

The Mac App Store is part of 10.6.6 and newer. If you're using an Intel Mac, purchase Mac OS X 10.6 on DVD and then run Software Update. If you're using a PowerPC Mac, give up.

  • I bought a used macbook air, with reinstalled the OS without iMovie. How can I get iMovie on App free of charge as a default in macbook air ?

I bought a used macbook air, with reinstalled the OS without iMovie. How can I get iMovie on App free of charge as a default in macbook air ?

Unfortunately, as recommended by the lady from CA, as long as the Mac is still associated with the Apple ID of the original owner, you can't even buy those iLife apps with that Mac. You will always get the alert to download them with the original owner's Apple ID.
As suggested by the chavo from España, you need the original owner to contact Apple Care* and request that the OS and the iLife apps be disassociated from his Apple ID. Then you should be free to OS X Recovery to resinstall the most recent version of OS X that shipped with the Mac and install the iLife apps. Afterward, before using any of the iLife apps you need to open the Mac App Store (MAS) to the Purchases pane and Accept these apps into your MAS account's Apple ID. If you use any of the iLife apps before you have accepted them into your account, as per the app's Terms of Use, they all become one-trick-ponies that can not be downloaded onto another Mac or updated.

*If you bought the Mac from a 2nd hand shop and don't have access to the original owner, you may need to provide Apple a purchase receipt to offer proof of sale.

  • I am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier

i am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier photo please help me to recover my photos

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Can't get mac back to how it was following manual restore from Time Machine

My MBP, 13-inch, early 2011 10.8.4 has an SSD to boot from in HD bay and a HD in the optical bay where I have my user folder. I dropped the mac when it was switched on and the HD got screwed up and I consequently had to initialise it. The drive is fine now and I had a Time Machine backup form an hour previous so thought I was OK. However, it seems I've been using Time Machine wrong and I couldn't restore things from my USB - I had to go to the latest backup manually in TM and bring the info back.
OK, so everything is back on the drive BUT, I can't get my Mac back to where it was before the drop - It's pointing to the User folder as before but the Mac looks like it's fresh out of the box. Any idea how I can get back?
This is most frustrating and I would genuinely appreciate any help.
    Many thanks, Craig

The first thing you need to do is have it tested for a hardware fault.

  • How can I get Mac Mini to accept bootable installers for Mountain Lion ? They work fine on MB-Pro

I've had a Mac Mini (late 2012) for the past week and need to do a complete reinstall to get rid of very mucked up Server.app settings that I can't get rid of even though I uninstalled Server.app and what I thought were all of its Library files. I need to get the Mac Mini back to pristine, factory default to start over. Then I'll be able to put Server.app into a VM so I can trash it if need be without mucking up the rest of my system.
I have both a bootable recovery partition on an external hard drive (My Book firewire) and a USB bootable installer with a fresh edition of Mountain Lion. I know the USB installer works just fine because I used it to do a clean install of my MacBook-Pro just last night. Went like a charm.
When I start up the Mac Mini with the option key held down, everything seems fine -- I see both the USB drive and the My Book's 2 volumes (1 for data, 1 for the Recovery partition). But when I select either the USB drive or the My Book Recovery partition as the start-up drive, I get a screen with a circle with a line across (the no-entry traffic sign), with no way to go back or forward. So the computer has to be rebooted.
Any suggestions as to how to get the Mac Mini to recognize bootable installers that MacBooks are able to see?

Late 2012 Mac mini uses a special Mountain Lion version that it's only compatible with this Mac and you can only get on Internet Recovery because it's not available in the App Store. If you want to reinstall Mountain Lion, press Command, Option and R keys while your computer is starting

  • Can't get mac line back online - a continual problem

    Hello,
I've read most all the posts I can find on this subject.  Mac air mac mail goes offline and I just can't get it back on.  I've changed nothing with MY mail, but all of a sudden it just goes offline, then I cannot get it back online.
I have tried "network diagnostics" via going to System Preferences > Network > and my computer is on line.
If I go to the Mail Connection Doctor, the top line says: Mail was able to connect to the Internet; however, all my accounts have red dots, not green ones, AND the actual "network diagnostics" option is grayed out.
On every email account I have it says: Could not connect to this SMTP server.  Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences (nothing has changed so all information is correct). Also verify that the server supports SSL.  If it does not, deselect the "Use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences.  I have tried it both ways, checked and unchecked. My server supports SSL, and it was always set with that checked.
I was getting and sending mail a couple days ago.  Nothing has changed except Mac mail and not being able to get it back online.  And this happens all the time.  It gets so old.
I also went to Mailbox > Take all accounts ON LINE > but nothing happens when I click on that.  I cannot click on take it OFF LINE because it's grayed out.  I thought I'd toggle back and forth and see if it helps.
So everything is just grayed out, yet I am connected to the internet and conneted to my WIFI and nothing has changed from a couple days ago, EXCEPT my mail is now OFFLINE and I can't send or receive.  Well, the "mail is offline" is grayed out, and "take all mail online" is not. All the accounts have the little triangle icons next to them.  If I click on those it says Connection Failed: 5 accounts have connection failures. Click the indicator next to each account for details.  Then I get two options "stay offline or take all accounts online.
So many conflicting messages -- it's online, take it off, it's off line, take it on, unable to connect to internet (except I'm here connected to the internet), network diagnostics grayed out, yet status tab in the bar across the top says "OFFLINE" and there is no way to put it back online.
Really crazy! This happens all the time -- all the time.  And then I post and browse and google and nothing gets accomplished and I forget about it and use other computers and devices to send email.  Then one day it'll just start working again.
How can I fix this once and for all and stop this nonsense of having it goo offline and not being able to get it back on using ALL the options available?
I need to add: I have deleted the account and re-added the account, but I always get the mail message:
The MobileMe IMAP server “mail.me.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.
Mobile Me is non existent now, but that is what MY computer message tells me.  And again, my network connection is fine, just not for EMAIL.
    Thanks for any help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Macbook wiped clean (2008 model), and I'm not able to save the installer and can't get mac os x.  Any suggestions?

I recently bought a used macbook (2008) and was told that it was set back to factory settings and came with all the orignal software, box etc.  The first Installer disk of the Mac os X was already in the disc drive, but I'm not able to get past where it saves the installer.  It wasn't able to find anywhere to save it.  I have no clue what to do.  Any suggestions?  Thanks for your help!

Snow Leopard disc must look like this to run on a 2008 MacBook:
and not say Update, Dropin, OEM, or any Mac model on it.
2008 MacBooks could at minimum also use the 10.5.6 retail disc that looked like:
And some of the earliest 2008 models can use 10.5.4 as well, but it couldn't say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM or a Mac model on it, except MacBook, if it was the one bundled with that MacBook.
If the disc is stuck in the drive, use this tip to remove it:
