Can I get Snow Leopard to run in 64-bit mode? (Black MacBook - Early 2008)

I have a Black Macbook (macbook4,1) with the latest firmare and OSX 10.6.4
I've tried holding "6" and "4" on bootup, and I can't get SL into true 64-bit mode. (System Software Overview: 64-bit Kernel and Extensions: No)
If I look at the Extensions, most say "Yes" to 64-bit (Intel), however, the following are still 32-bit:
AppleIntelGMAX3100
AppleIntelGMAX3100FB
BSDKernel6.0
IOKit6.0
Libkern6.0
Mach6.0
System6.0
Does that basically mean that my video card is limiting my ability to run pure 64-bit? If so, does anyone know if this is something that is planned to be fixed in a future release?
Thanks!
Mark

Yes. No. All 64-bit software runs in 64-bit. You simply cannot use the 64-bit kernel unless Apple provides a 64-bit video driver which may not even be possible for the GPU in your computer.
What makes you think you even have a need for the 64-bit kernel?

I have purchaded Snow Leopard, but I can installed it
    Pls can anyone help me
    Best regards and merry christmas

Apple figures that having supported PowerPC code for the last 6 years is enough so they dropped it.
Why should they have to support some that old forever? It doesn't make good business sense to support some that so few will use.
If you must play those games, my suggestion is to get an older Mac that will support PowerPC. It is going to be a difficult task to get Snow Leopard to run on a new Mac.

  • Replaced my hard drive and can't get snow leopard back...

I replaced my hard drive and reinstalled the operating system using my "Leopard" install CD.  But I had purchased "Snow Leopard" and now have no idea how to get "Snow Leopard" back.  Itunes won't work for some reason...everything else is fine.  I do have my time machine...but I had so much junk on their I don't want to just restore it...  I want a fresh computer with what I had purchased..."Snow Leopard"...so that I can maybe upgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Can someone help?

You need to reload it from the DVD you used to install it. If you've lost that, the online Apple Store sells them.

  • How can I get Snow Leopard running

I have a 13'' Macbook that was running perfectly fine - I haven't had one issue since I bought it.  I bought the iphone 5 and needed to upgrade my itunes to version 7.  I was running Leopard 10.5.8 and needed to upgrade my OS to Snow Leopard in order to get itunes.  I ordered the software (10.6.3) and installed it on my computer.  The installation said it was successful.  I restarted my computer but I received a blinking folder with a question mark on it so I googled some solutions to see what could have gone wrong because the installation was successful.
I have tried holding c, option, resetting the pram, disconnecting my battery and pressing the power button for 5 seconds, erasing my HD drive, restoring the HD drive with a Time Machine Backup, and everything else I was told to do but I can not get my computer up and running.  If I restart it, I keep receiving the blinking folder with the question mark.  I'm not sure how it can not recognize a OS when I go to Startup Disk, it lists my OS being 10.6.3.  When I boot the computer from the dvd, it just continues to ask me to install the software each time and I'm going in circles.
Can someone please tell me what to do?  It seems that Apple doesn't know what to do, my hard drive was repaired (it wasn't broken), and the installation is going through sucessfully, why can't I get my computer running?
HELP!  I'm a photographer and graphic designer and can't afford to be out of commission.  All I did was install a software, this shouldn't be this difficult.
    Thanks!

Does your MacBook meet the minimum requirements for Snow Leopard?

  • Can't get snow leopard disk to work, can I put it on a thumb drive

I just replaced the power supply in my 2006 iMac.  I need to update my operating system to Snow Leopard and have the disk, but I can't get the disk to work.  It is brand new.  Can I somehow make a copy of the disk, on another computer, and put it on a thumb drive?  I'm grasping at straws here.
    Thanks,
    Thia

Hi, yes you can, either in Disk Utility on a Mac... make a DMG of that Install Disk, the use DU to Restore that DMG to a big enough flash drive, or...
    Carbon Copy Cloner...

  • Can not get Snow Leopard to install on my MacBook Intel 2GHz (circa 2006)

I get to about the 33 minute mark in the Snow Leopard install and then my screen goes to a dark grey and then I get a message saying there has been an error and the install can not proceed. This is a purchased Snow Leopard 10.6.3 disc from Apple. It worked fine on my iMac and another MacBook. I have tried resetting the PRAM and verifying the disk and repairing permissions (as per other board discussions). But still nothing. Does this disc limit the number of computers you can put it on? Help! Getting frustrated!!

No. The single user retail disc and family pack retail disc both allow infinite number of installs. (Not according to the licensing agreement on the single user disc, but Apple uses the honors system).  That is all I can input.  Good luck.

  • How can I get Snow Leopard to upgrade my MBP?

I have a MBP dated 2008. I am very pleased with it, but some Software upgrades now required a higher version. I am not sure that Lion would be worth using it. Any how, I do need first to move to Snow Leopard. Where can I get it.

Before you buy anything, first make sure your Mac is compatible.
Minimum specs for Snow Leopard.  Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard -        Read the Technical Specifications
Note.  You can no longer buy Snow Leopard from an Apple retail store, only as follows.
If you are in North America ... Last I read, you must call them (1-800-MY-APPLE). It is $29 plus tax for family pack and $19 plus tax for the individual use version.
In Europe or otherwise … call your National Apple Helpline … http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Once you have bought and upgraded you will need to apply the Combo updater for Snow Leopard.          Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
If you expect to go further check that your machine is Intel based.

  • How can I get Snow Leopard installation from Greece?

    Hi all,
I have a Macbook 4.1 13"inch (2008) currently running OS X 10.5. I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard but the problem is that I cannot find anywhere in Greece to buy the installation disk. There is no greek Apple store, the rest of Apple stores do not ship to Greece.  I really to need to buy the upgrade but I cannot find a way to accomplish.
    Thanks in advance.

If your local dealers no longer have copies, then unless you have a friend or relative in a country that has an Apple Store who could buy a copy for you, you'll need to look for private sellers.
    Regards.

  • How to get snow leopard 10.6 on black macbook?

I have a 2008 black macbook that is stuck on 10.5.8. I tried to download things to update to yosemite however it needs to be on 10.6 to work. This is frustrating because I cannot download and use update browsers, final cut pro x or microsoft word packages. I downloaded snow leopard, but whenever I try to open it I get "This update requires Mac OS X version 10.6." which is what I am attempting to update to so I'm lost on that. How can I get snow leopard 10.6 on this early 2008 black macbook?

You need to buy it on DVD.

  • How to verify that Firefox 4.0 is running in 32 bit mode on a mac

WebEx will only work in 32 bit mode, so I have to make sure Firefox 4.0 is ONLY running this way on macintosh computers. How do I check if this is how it is running, and how to insure it only runs in 32 bit?

Firefox 4 runs in 64-bit mode by default on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. You can set Firefox 4 to always run in 32-bit mode in the Firefox.app "Get Info" window, as shown in this screenshot: http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc391/wymette/Firefox4GetInfo.png
#From the menu bar, select Firefox and then select Quit Firefox
#Open the Applications folder in Finder and locate the Firefox application icon.
#Hold down the control key while you click the Firefox icon and select Get Info from the list of menu items.
#In the "Firefox Info" window, click the box in front of "Open in 32-bit mode" so that it is checked.
#Close the "Firefox Info" window and then restart Firefox 4.

  • I have a new time capsule, want to use it in conjunction with iMac G5 and MacBook; laptop runs Snow Leopard  but G5 can't install Snow Leopard, is stuck at OS 10.4.11.  Am I doomed?  Can anyone advise me?  Thanks..

I have a new Time Capsule, want to  use it in conjunction with an iMac G5 and a MacBook.  MacBook runs Snow Leopard, but G5 (lacking Intel processor) can't install Snow Leopard, is stuck at OS 10.4.11.  Am I doomed?  Will appreciate any advice.  Thanks.

you should still be able to get a copy of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), which should run on your G5.

  • If I purchase a brand new I-mac today do I have to run OS Lion or can I load Snow leopard?

If I purchase a brand new I-mac today do I have to run OS Lion or can I load Snow leopard?

Just faced that question, and the answer should be that you can run SL on the latest iMac.
(Our scenario:  Bought 3 iMacs in August.  Was surprised -- and relieved! -- to see that they arrived with SL installed on them, and grey system restore disks.  One of the machines was DOA.  Futzed around with it for 6 weeks trying to get it to work, decided it was dead, drove it 4 hours to the nearest Apple Store.  They gave us a new iMac, which when we got it back, turned out to have Lion on it.  Popped in one of the three grey restore disks that had come in August, installed SL, it works without any problems.)

  • Where do I get snow leopard 10.6.0... Can't find it in the standard downloads?

where do I get snow leopard 10.6.0... Can't find it in the standard downloads?

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:
