Can I go back to Safari 5.0.X in Lion?

My job relies on me being able to use a website that opens .pdf files directly in the browser.  Adobe (as most of us are aware) has released a statement indicating that Safari 5.1 is essentially incompatible with certain aspects of the Adobe Reader Plugin as stated here:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/908/cpsid_90885.html
Is it possible to "downgrade" to Safari 5.0 while still running OS X Lion (I just purchased a new MacBook Air).  If not can anyone think of a viable workaround?
Thanks!

>> ... I'm pretty sure downgrading from Safari 5 would require reverting to Snow Leopard.
Hey - don't slam Snow! (grin) MY 17" MacBook Pro was manufactured just about three months before the "cutoff" system specs that the new OS X requires (I'm a measley 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo).
I originally thought I would be irritated - but after thinking about it, these past 5 years have been the most productive and wonderful in my 25+ years' involvement in personal computing. I mean, no other single machine has lasted FIVE+ years and treated me so well.
And this current problem? An Adobe problem - not an Apple problem.

  • How can i go back to safari 5.1.7

i updated safari to 6.0,   but i dont like it, it just seem awkward to me, so i use terminal delete the safari(it seems to be the only way to delete the safari ).  now i try to install safari5.1.7,  but this stop me me from installing,   can someone please help me out,,,   i am very appreciated for your help..
here is one picture of what had stop me

If you have Lion the following method is relatively painless (Mountain Lion removed the OS X RSS supporting code so Safari v5.1.7 won't run on Mountain Lion) - assuming you have access to an installed package of Safari v5.1.7.
    Leave v6.0 where it is.
Find another installed Safari v5.1.7 source (time machine, or a Mac that wasn't updated - Snow Leopard Macs did not get the v6 update).  For a Mac that wasn't updated go into the Applications folder copy the Safari package (its the Safari Application with the Safari icon in Applications directory) - it should be about 40MB in size if memory serves.
On your Safari v6.0 Mac, go into your Applications folder and create a new folder (I called mine Old Safari), then drop your Safari v5.1.7 copy into it.  Copy the Safari v5.1.7 to the dock so you can launch v5.1.7 easily (I deleted my v6 Safari icon for clarity Dock but its not required).
Run v5.1.7 and enjoy its functionality again (its what I'm typing this in and others have used this method) and any updates that come for v6 should find the installed v6 and update it.
Important, do not run both versions at the same time (they use the same supporting files and corruption is likely) and just to avoid issues if you are running v5.1.7 I'd avoid using v6 till your ready to give up the ghost on v5.1.7 (who knows what kind of issues could raise their heads with them both using the same supporting files).
At some point, with this method, you could do an update from Apple that updates the underlying supporting code Safari uses and breaks Safari v5.1.7 (like disable the Lion OS X RSS functionality) so that's an ongoing danger, but this is an option for folks that want to use v5.1.7 again and can't roll back their machines.
Of course v6 had a bunch of security issues fixed so using v5.1.7 presumably leaves those and future updates behind - so this isn't a great long term solution, but for now it works.

  • Can't use Back to my Mac on OS X Lion

    Hi,
I have upgraded both my MacBook Pro and iMac 27" to OS X Lion, and set up everything as suggested for the iCloud, but I still can't use Back to my Mac function.  In fact, on the macbook pro, I can't even see the shared sidebar (after trying several suggestions from the communities from 2008).  And on the iMac, I can see the shared sidebar, but there is no option for Back to my Mac.  I sware I've ticked Back to my Mac on the Finder's preferences, and everything apparent from the iCloud.
It'd be great if someone can point me to the right direction.  Thanks!
    Cheers,

    Carolyn,
After clicking your link, I think the solution described therein may work -- however, I brought my MBP to the Genius Bar and gave it to them the next 24-48 hours so they could run diagnostic tests, so I am not able to experiment with your solution.  I will say this, though: while I was still trying to fix it myself, I DID get the "Allow me to use my Apple ID to reset my account password" checkbox, which I checked, and on the next screen where it lists my various User Accounts (mine, and Guest), I clicked on mine, typed the password (and every conceivable other password I could possibly think of), but nothing worked.  Then, when it gave me my security question and gave me a link to "Reset my password," no other window popped up to allow me to perform the reset.
All in all, I'm fairly convinced this is a hardware issue, not a software issue.  My system recognizes my HD sometimes, but not others. Perhaps there is something wrong with the cable connecting the HD to the logic board.

  • Can I revert back to Snow Leopard after upgrading to Lion?

I would like to install Lion over my current Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installation but I have some concerns that I may not like it.  If for some reason, I want to revert back to SL, can I use a Time Machine backup to return to my former OS?

Yes.  Just boot up from your Snow Leopard DVD, and restore the last Time Machine backup that was made before you installed Lion.

  • If I update to Mavericks can I go back to Lion

If I update to Mavericks can I go back to Lion

If your system shipped with Lion, you'll need to use Internet Recovery so that you can repartition the disk and so remove the Recovery Partition:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
If your system shipped with Mac OS X 10.6, you'll need to boot from the 10.6 installer DVD and use Disk Utility to repartition, then install 10.6, update to 10.6.8, and download Lion again from the Mac App Store.
    Regards.

I am not sure what your problem is, can you give more details.
One possibility is you may be in full screen mode, for details on fixing that see the [[menu bar is missing]] article.

If your problem is something else please give more details.

  • HT5429 How can I set back phone settings to go from a searched location in safari to apple maps rather than google directions?

How can I set back phone settings to go from a searched location in safari to apple maps rather than google directions?

Click Here enter destinations, link to page in iWeb or iFrame it by clicking on "Link to Page" from Google map. This may seem ironic but if you are looking for something the best way to find it is by searching Google. For instance Googling "google map directions" will send you to referenced page. for a sub-$20 app I find it hard to believe you find it hard to believe Apple hasn't integrated this feature into the software.
    Hope that helps!

  • I used updated my safari to 6.1 in mountain lion, now i can't go back.

i used a software called "OS X Software Update Seed Configuration Utility.dmg", it patchs something on mac, and then u'll find a new update in app store, the same version of safari as the one in Mavericks.
But now i can't go back to the old version, i can't even connect to app store anymore, anyone know how to solve this?
    a million thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The OS X Software Update Seed Configuration Utility is an app that developers use to get OS X beta versions. You mustn't use it if you aren't a developer.
If you are a developer, you can find the Safari 6.1 uninstaller in the Safari Dev Center

  • Just uploaded Safari 6.0 with OS X 10.7.4 and it is by far slower than any Safari version so far. What is the problem? Can I go back to the previous Safari?

Just upgraded to Safari 6.0 when prompted by software upgrade in the apple menu. I have OS X 10.7.4. Was this a mistake? It is the slowest I have ever seen Safari. Safari has never uploaded a website properly on my brand new MacBook Pro but this is ridiculous. Can I go back to the previous Safari or are there any fixes? Please help.

My bank (Chase) and my wife's payroll provider (ADP) say I can no longer pull our statements because of incompatibilities between Adobe Reader and Safari. The Apple site says it is not responsible for for 3rd party software. Adobe says go back to Safari 5.0. Apple dosen't let me download Safari 5.0; so what do I do. The bank had me download Chrome, and I can now download my statements. but what a pain. Any suggestios?

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

Make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available.
Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
If there's sufficient disk space, the startup disk may need repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
You will need your install disc if the startup disk needs repairing.

Since updating to iOS5 my safari boxes to search new pages are now tabs at the top of the screen, can I go back to boxes for multiple internet pages?

You can open multiple tabs and switch back and forth like you use those boxes. In actual fact it's faster with tabs.

  • Hi, how can i return back safari default search engine?

How can I return back safari default search engine? It has been changed after trying to download adobe flash player.

You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

    Hi Timia,
If you are using Safari as a web browser :-
Open Safari, go to Safari menu > Preferences > General, and put Google as the homepage. Then, choose Google as your default search engine.
If you are using Google Chrome as the web browser :-
      Open Google Chrome.
In the top right corner of the page, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu > Settings.
In the "Search" section, select Google from the drop-down menu.
Let me know if you still experience any issue.
    Regards,
    Aadesh
