Is your profile signature "Mac OS X (10.6.8)" still current? With that MacOS X version you can upgrade to iPhoto 9.2.x. Only, the iPhoto version 9.5.1 currently sold at the AppStore requires MacOS X 10.9.x. If you you are not running Mavericks, you could try to buy a boxed retail version of iLife '11. That will have a compatible early iPhoto 9.x version.

  • What RAM do I need and where can I get it from?

    Hi all,
I know this is probably a simple question, but I just want to make sure I don't mess up my computer! I have an old school DV iMac, and bought the Mac OS X upgrade not too long after it came out (which is rather a while ago now!), but couldn't install it became I don't have enough RAM. And I obviously have just put it off and off. Now I'm at uni, and want the computer to work as well as it can for my mum, because she's even worse than me when it comes to computers. So, anyway, I need RAM. What type do I need and where can I get it from fairly cheaply? And how much would you recommend I get? My friend says he knows how to put it in, so all okay there hopefully/
    My computer's details:
    Processor info: PowerPC G3
    Machine speed: 400MHz
    OS: 9.2.2
    Built-in memory: 64MB
I remember being able to get more details than this from somewhere on the computer, but I can't remember where...I haven't used it for 6 months or something, and am obviously getting forgetful.
Hope someone can help. If you need to know anything else, tell me where to get the info from and I will tell you!
    Cheers,
    Fran

    Hi,
I just bought some RAM from Crucial.
If you go to www.crucial.com/uk and follow the Crucial Memory Advisor Tool, you should be able to find the RAM for your Mac.
1 GB sticks are pretty good value at the moment (they've even gone down a few pounds since I bought mine a week ago) and if you enter this code (found it on aonther thread here) you might get a couple of pounds knocked off the total: CUSTOMPC
There's also places like Kingston & Cancom to try, as well as Misco.co.uk. But Crucial select the recommended RAM for your Mac.
Also, when you think you've found the right RAM and want to buy it, try the Apple agent chat, and double-check with them.
    Hope this is useful.

Can I combine a PC3200 DDR SDRAM with PC25300 DDR2 SO-DIMM when installing ram? I am taking ram out of an iMac G5 ALS (2005) to add to the 1GB ram (3GB max) iMac late 2006 model.

Yes, there is that small issue but even if they were the same slots you'd just be disappointed a little later.

  • My RAM is full. How can I delete items from RAM?

RAM is nearly full on MacBook. How can I delete items from RAM?

Nothing is stored permanently in RAM. I think you mean on your hard drive:
If you really meant RAM then add more RAM. Otherwise,
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

Your 14 days are up, however you could take your case to Apple Inc. regarding same,
    however those are the stipulations.
RAM cannot be upgraded however, period, its permanent on the logic board after mfg.
As for the SSD (solid state drive), upgrading same is a bad premise 9 times out of 10.
No notebooks is a mass storage device, and you need an external HD for data redundancy and backups regardless.
data that is static on your SSD and not used very often has no logical reason to be ON the notebooks, and best saved on a superslim external HD ($60)
SSD are very expensive, even a small one,  HD are cheap as dirt and users are recommended to have one regardless for many good reasons.

I own a MacBook Pro 13 inch [dec 2009] 4gb ram. I'm upgrading it to 8gb. Can I increase the speed of the ram from 1066 to 1333 Mhz..?
Which is the best company and is it necessary to buy it from the Apple store.

Let's clear the air here between fact and fiction.
Brand of RAM has little if anything to do with its quality.
A reliable vendor is more important that brand of RAM.
Installing faster rated RAM than required for your computer doesn't result in a faster computer. The RAM still runs at the speed of the system's memory bus.
Installing slower rated RAM than required for your computer will make the computer run slower.
Using faster rated RAM is a tricky business. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it will not work. This may be due to other factors related to your computer's memory bus speed and clock speed as well as other characteristics of the RAM such as CAS Latency (CL.)
The reliable thing to do is use RAM that meets the specifications set for your computer. That information is found in either the user manual or the system specs.

  • Can't copy files from mounted DMG. What's up??

So all of a sudden, I can't copy files from mounted DMG files. It's strange because if there is one file and I drag it to another location, like desktop, it won't copy. If I drag 2 files from the mounted DMG to the desktop one of them copies. If I drag 3, then 2 copy... it's always all but one of the files... never all of them.
I've tried repairing permissions but nothing works. I'm at a loss...
    thanks

Try holding option when you drag the files. This tells the mac to move the files to the desktop of your computer not the desktop folder of the DMG (usually a hidden folder)
If that doesn't work it may be that you need administrative privileges to move the files. Make sure you are logged on as as an administrator by selecting the account tab in system preferences and making sure it says "admin" under your user name. Log on to or create an administration account then try moving the file.
Hope this helps, let me know

  • How can I boot/run from external HD when internal HD is fried?

Background: I have an original vintage 2002 emac G4 1.25 that I've been messing with for the past couple of months due to slow running and hanging/crashing apps. I upgraded the RAM with an additional 256 MB several years ago and I was running OSX 10.2 without many problems until recently. I was getting messages about the hard drive being full, so I cleaned up and backed up my files to an external HD (USB, of course, since I hadn't found this forum at that time). Freeing up memory didn't help and neither did creating an administrator account, so I ran Apple Hardware Test, which turned up an error code: mem_/2/4 DIMM1/J1601
When I tried to do an erase and reinstall, the erase part went fine but the reinstall wouldn't work because (on the last of 4 discs) the machine returned a "can't write" error and suggested that the hard drive is unusable.
My questions: How can I use an external HD (Firewire, of course) to boot and run my emac when the internal HD is fried and there's no operating system on board? How do I install OSX on the external HD to boot the emac in the first place? Also, will the 384 MB of RAM be enough, or must I upgrade that, too? For that matter, what version of OSX would be best?
Thanks for any help you can offer. I am a long-time mac user (still have my Classic, which still works), and I'd really rather not replace the emac.

HFS stands for Hierarchical File System. The plus sign stands for extended or extended format.
This is the data system format that Apple uses for their operating systems.
When you buy an external hard drive device, typically they do not come pre-formatted.
You'll need to use the Disk Utility app in OS X in your username/Applications/Utilities folder on your eMac if it's still operational or when you start up your eMac from the OS X 10.5 DVD located in the Applications/Utilities folder.
You use this app to initialize and format the drive once it is connected to your eMac. If you wish, you can also, at that stage, partition the drive into separate variable size sections to make a large capacity HD more manageable.
You need to have a functioning stick of RAM in your eMac in order for it to boot up correctly.
The OS X startup routine looks for all components in your eMac that are necessary for a successful start up.
Your eMac will not boot up, even from CD/DVD, without any RAM installed.
If you have only one stick of RAM in your eMac and it's bad or corrupted, you'll need to purchase and Install a new stick of RAM to start.
You might as well purchase 2 brand new 1 GB RAM sticks for your eMac. 2 GBs
OS X 10.5 Leopard's minimum RAM requirements are 512 MBs of RAM.
Your eMac can max out at 2 GBs of RAM.
The specs for the RAM are PC2700 SDRAM, DDR333, 184 pins.

  • Firefox won't insall into my applications folder. Says can't install because libsmime3.dylib is in use. I am running Mac Os 10.6.7 on a Macbook Pro. I can run firefox okay from the disk image but just won't install into the apps folder.

My system is a Macbook Pro running Mac Os 10.6.7 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram. The upgrade downloads fine, but when I try to drag the firefox image onto my appication folder, I get a dialogue box that says...Cannot install application because "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. I can run Firefox fine from the disk image.

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' So apparently that complains the same way it does if I click it up on the menu :)))
As for item owned by---that's not an issue and isn't coming up. User is not a problem either as I am the only user on this system. There is only ONE file in my trash at the moment at that is this dmg file. Nothing Mac. Nothing owned by anyone other than Firefox. The problem seems to be that the dmg file and the original 4.0 FF file are working in tandem with each other--even though I have already drug the new 8.0 globe into the Apps folder and it updated the FF app with the new stuff. If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected. Hey--I'm getting ready to head out and won't be back till evening. I'll check back in this evening. Thank you again for your help.

  • I can't watch videos from the net...

i can't open videos from the internet, specifically those from yahoo sports and other sites. sometimes they just will not load, and sometimes i click to open it, and a new folder shows up on my desktop but if i try to open it it says that it cannot be opened because i don't have the right application to do so.

Sounds like you're trying to view RealPlayer files. Since this program isn't preinstalled on Macs, you have to download it from this site. It also gives you instructions on how to install it.

  • [SOLVED] Something automatically wakes PC from suspend to RAM

    Hello,
for the last two days my desktop PC automatically and instantaneously wakes from suspend-to-RAM when I try to put it to sleep. I found https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=135543 and tried the script that solved the problem for the OP with no success.
Some info that might be relevant:
    I have not made any hardware changes to my computer lately;
The only devices connected to my computer are the display (DVI) my TV (HDMI) and a mouse and keyboard and a router.
    I use the stock Arch kernel and update regularly from a synced mirror in Norway;
    I suspend my computer with
    dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.UPower" \
    /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend
All wake-up events like PCIe, mouse and keyboard are disabled in BIOS.
Does anybody experience these problems lately, or know if this is a known issue//bug?

I'll try changing some BIOS settings, thanks As of now, I can't test your suggestion regarding input devices and wake-up because it takes less then a second for the computer to auto-wake-up
Also, I doubt the keyboard sets this off, because the scripts unloads all USB modules before suspending. But the mouse (a PS/2) on the other hand...
EDIT: I found out that it was the network waking the computer After stopping the network daemon before suspending, I can suspend normally! On a side note, I can wake the computer by pressing a key on my keyboard, but I do not know whether I could before or not. Anyways, this is solved for me

  • Can't start up from Install disk

    I'm using a MacBook purchased 3/07. System 10.4.11
I can't start up from the Install Disk for Leopard. I only get a screen with the apple logo and the spinning thing. I wait 10 minutes. Nothing happens. I've tried both using the Disk for the start up and clicking on Install icons but when it shuts down to restart....nothing.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks. Lois

    Hi Josef,
I left it on for over an hour and nothing happened. Finally called Apple and after an hour and a half of all kinds of testing, restarts, zapping and I don't know what else, the nice man there talked to his supervisor and then had me test the hardware (hold down D when starting). Turns out there is a problem with my ram so now I have to take it to a local technician and if he can't fix it, it'll have to go back to Apple for repairs. Ho hum. I just hope it finally gets working to make all this worthwhile.
Thanks again for your interest and help.

  • Can I retrieve files from a modern Mac Backup drive to a PPC Mac?

Can I retrieve files from a modern Mac Backup drive to a PPC Mac?  I have been having problems with my Macbook Pro not starting up.  I need to figure out how to access files with my PPC Desktop; if possible.
What type of files can I access and what type I cannot?
My Macbook Pro: MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), 750GB HD, 2.2 GHz, 6 GB RAM
    My PPC: Power mac G4/Upgraded 1.2GHZ /800+RAM/3 HD =400+ GB, Mac OS X (10.4.2)
    Thanks in advance,
    God bless

You will need software that is compatible with the data files on the backup drive, ie. if they are .doc files you will need Word (or a substitute).
You don't mention what type of files are on the drive so it is hard to be specific.

  • Can I upgrade to Mavericks without increasing RAM?

I have just upgraded our iMac from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and need to upgrade to Mavericks in order to get the latest iPhoto so I can order photo books (that I have already spent hours making and didn't find out that I couldn't order them until I clicked on "Buy Book"!).  I bought the wrong RAM today and just wondering if I can upgrade to Mavericks and upgrade the RAM later (I'm in a rush to get these books before Christmas!).  Any thoughts??

In this case you will need as much RAM as your Mac will take Before you start using it.
    Do the RAM first...
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
    See Here  >  OWC RAM  >  http://www.macsales.com
The above site also has videos on how to Install RAM should you need it...
Then upgrade to Mavericks... If your Mac will run it.
Check here to see if your Mac is compatible...
    http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
    IMPORTANT:
Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using... Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Mavericks, Mountain Lion and Lion.
