Can I grab something off time Capsule and put it on another external drive?

Something happened to my iPHoto librry this morning (it's gone -- don't ask). So I've tried twice to restore it from TC from last night. It hangs at about 2/3 of the way through, and I can't restore the whole thing.
So -- a question. Is there a way to copy it from TC and put it on an external drive? I'm wondering if I just copy it, and then copy it back, or just create a new library, if that would work. At the moment, I'm copying, for safety's sake, a backup from an external drive from a week ago. Sadly, I've put 2 to 3 hours of work in on modifying 200 photos since last week, which I will probably have to re-do. But at least I'd have my library and all my photos. It would be better if I could get the backup from last night, after I finished the job. (Or even from mid-day. Then I'd only have to re-create about 30 or 45 minutes of work)

Hi Beth, welcome to the discussions!
Might be a good idea to also post over in the iPhoto forum if you haven't tried this yet as this is a common topic on their boards.
You may be able to get your iPhoto library back by rebuilding it. I've done it, but's it's been a long time, so don't want to mislead you on anything. The guys over in the iPhoto forum are real experts and should have some fixes for you.

  • Can you run applications off Time Capsule

I am thinking about getting a MacBook Air, but the smaller hard drives have me worried a bit about space. I have a Time Capsule that has plenty of room and I am wondering if it is possible to move applications over to the Time Capsule and run them over the wireless network. I imagine performance would be a big issue--especially for data-heavy games.
    I have several questions:
    1. Is it possible to run applications in this manner?
    2. If so, is performance so bad that it is not worth it?
    3. If applications do not run (or do not run well), would there be any major performance issues with moving songs, photos, movies over to the external drive?
    Any information/advice will be appreciated.
    Thanks!

The TC is really not designed to do this.. in general applications should be on the local drive.. data can be moved off is you need to but running applications over network is not even always possible.
Performance over wireless for sure can be an issue.. !
The issue with moving data to the TC.. is backup. IF you do this, where are you going to backup the files.. the TC has no built in backup for itself..
It is better to get a real nas with decent fast raid and built in backup..
Or use a computer in the network as a quasi server.. eg a mini.. although you still need to attach fast drives by some means to it.

  • Can I pull songs off my iPod and put them on my computer?

My husband's iPod classic needs a new battery. The problem is that he didn't back up his songs on the computer, so the only place they exist is on his iPod. As you know, when I send his iPod in for a new battery, his songs will all be gone.
So I was told recently that there is a way to pull songs off an iPod and put them into iTunes on a computer. Is this really possible? If so, does it involve new software or hardware? Can you give me specifics? Where is this software/hardware available? Our computer is a PC running Windows XP. I want to do this for him for his birthday. Any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • How can I move all my iTune downloads and downloaded CD to an External Drive and still register in iTunes on my iMac?

  • Can't get data off Time Capsule

I had to erase my HD and reinstall Yosemite (multiple times) because my machines could not boot, shut down or run reliably. I used Migration Assistant to restore my applications and user files from my 2014 Time Capsule. But on my Macbook Pro, it lied: no applications were actually restored (possibly the reason I finally ended up with a machine that could boot up), and while it restored much of my filespace, it didn't restore my music or photos, at least 60 GB of data.
I can't restore them using Time Machine because it seems to regard my erased HD as unrelated to the earlier one. And I can't open the sparsebundle in the Finder: I always get "connection failed". Resetting the TC (via Airport Utility) did not help. What can I do?

Switching everything off, then on again later, seems to reset things enough. Now to copy stuff back manually... what a pain.

  • How do you access a backup of a time capsule that was made to an external drive?, How does one access a backup of a time capsule that was made to an external drive?

Back in Oct my TC was poppping an error that it was full. Research in here told me the solution was to backup the TC to an external HD and wipe it. I now need something off that old backup and don't know how to mount it to retrieve the documents.
I tried to mount it by selecting the EX HD in the TM software however it says the drive is not in a readable format.
At a loss on what to do.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I get a ton of greyed out bars (no dates) but only a couple (one date) at the bottom is clickable. It appears to me at least there are a lot of backup windows I just can't access. The recent ones that I can access work fine and they are TODAY and Sept 6 which was likely the day I did the achive.
If you see actual dates there, that you can't access, it means that whatever's in the Finder window wasn't included in that backup.   See the pink box in #15A of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
But if they're just items on a "placeholder" scale, there aren't any other recognizable backups.
As you detail I can mount the ext hd in finder and in the sidebar I get an image "Time Machine Backups" which gives me a folder "backups.backupdb" which has a folder for my mac mini and then only three folders. One is the Sept 6 date, on is 'in-progress' and the third is 'latest'. Going into the Sept 6 gives me access to the same data as going in via TM.
That sounds like you only have the 1 completed backup, of September 6.  The "Latest" item is simply an alias to the most recent completed backup.
Before going any farther, try to Repair the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. Use the procedure for an external disk connected to a Time Capsule.
If that doesn't help, it sounds like Time Machine had deleted all previous backups trying to make room for a (very large) new one.  See the pink box in #C4 ofTime Machine - Troubleshooting for details.
The .inProgress package is the remains of one or more failed or cancelled backups.  You can't use Time Machine to get at it, and there's no telling what's inside it, but it's not a complete backup.
You may be able to find some things in it and copy them, but you may have difficulty with permissions, locked files, etc.
It looks like a file, but is actually a special kind of folder that's treated like a single object for most purposes.
Select it, then right-click it and select the Show Package Contents option.  There may be one or more folders with gibberish names, containing partial backups.  Navigate through the folder structure to see what you can find.  That will be "hit and miss," and the results will be unpredictable.

  • Time Capsule on Vista - issues connecting USB external drive  (exact steps)

I recently have been trying to connect an 1 TB external hdd to my time capsule. When connecting directly to USB - the drive maps fine (NTFS)
    1)Do I need to reformat in FAT32?
    2) what steps exactly do I need to follow to access the drive? I have already followed these: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1331 and none work
a)This is formatted as: \\IPaddress\drivename (for example, \\10.0.1.1\mydrive) Mine is 192.168.1.1\\Fetz TB (though the name in utility shows WDC WD10 EADS-00l blah blah)
b)when running as server connection - drive does not display
    3) in apple utility click on disks I can see the hdd listed Enable file sharing is selected, do I need to enable over WAN, share with bonjour? Workgroup and WINS server are empty...should this be the case?
    Please assist
    Thanks

    1)Do I need to reformat in FAT32?
Yes, either FAT32 or HFS+ will be required in order for the Time Capsule to be able to share it out to network clients.
a)This is formatted as: \\IPaddress\drivename (for example, \\10.0.1.1\mydrive) Mine is 192.168.1.1
Fetz TB (though the name in utility shows WDC WD10 EADS-00l blah blah)
You will need to rename the drivename to not include a space.
    3) in apple utility click on disks I can see the hdd listed Enable file sharing is selected, do I need to enable over WAN, share with bonjour? Workgroup and WINS server are empty...should this be the case?
You will only want to enable over WAN if you plan on accessing the drive from another network or the Internet. If all access to this drive is from the local network, then leave this option disabled. This would be the same for the Bonjour option. Entering a Workgroup makes it easier for Windows PC, but all computers would need to be in the same Workgroup to be useful. The WINS entry would only be a value if you have a WINS server running on your local network.

  • Using time capsule to back up a partitioned external drive

hi - I am using a 3TB external hard drive to back up my mac with time machine. I have partitioned the external hard drive so that 2TB backs up my mac and the remaining 1TB (well slightly under 1TB) is used to store media files. So far so good, everything works flawlessly. My only problem is that I would like to back up my media files. I had hoped I could use an old 1TB time capsule (works fine) via ethernet cable to back up the media section of my partitioned external hard drive. That does not appear to be possible, certainly via time machine it isn't - any solutions?
    Help would be much appreciated.

That does not appear to be possible, certainly via time machine it isn't - any solutions?
Is it just excluded in the TM preferences.. the drive used for backups obviously won't be included but a partition should be possible.
If not, then just copy the files.. one disk to the other.. or use a program like superduper or CCC.. etc.

  • Now Airport Utility says it can't see my devices (Time Capsule and Airport Express,) despite the fact they are working fine.

    Any thoughts?

AirPort base station not seen or "An unexpected error occurred" appears in AirPort Utility 6.3:
This can happen if IPv6 has been disabled. To enable IPv6 for your network interface:
Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, and then click Network.
If a lock icon appears in the lower-left corner, click it and enter your admin name and password to unlock the pane.
Click your network service (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) in the list, and then click Advanced.
    Click the TCP/IP tab.
Choose Link-local only from the Configure IPv6 pop-up menu.
    Click OK.
    Click Apply.
The AirPort device should now appear in AirPort Utility.
