Can I group 2 objects on separate layers & preserve layers?

When I try to group a text box from layer 1 with a text box from layer 2 it combines them onto the current drawing layer. Is it possible to group objects on 2 different layers while keeping them on their separate layers?

Investigate conditional text for this purpose. Search Google for terms like "InDesign conditional text," without quotes.

How Can I Turn Off Music On Separate Layers?

I have a number of different music selections on each on their own layer. Is there a way to simply turn off the sound in a layer so I can test different music tracks without having to delete the layer and drag a new sound in? In short when I preview my movie all of the sounds play at once but is there a way to simply turn off the sounds in each layer to test each music track separately. Is this possibe?

Add new keyframe in the layer you want the music to stop. Add the same sound and set its Sync to Stop. On the frame where your music starts, you should have Sync set to Start. To set Sync, select frame with music in it and check Properties panel -> Sound -> Sync.

How can I 'unlock' non editable adjustments in layers

I have downloaded a nice free flyer psd template, which I need and should be able to adjust. But I cannot edit any of the layers. They appear to have a folder structure and have it says 'non-editable adjustments'when I hoover over the pencil.
I somehow need to unlock this but have no option to do so if I right click.
I have seen this before ....
Have no idea how to work with this.
Can anyone help me out?

Folders permit the grouping of elements on separate layers and then blend modes or masking can be applied to the entire folder. Folders are not supported in PSE layers; it's a pro feature.

Should I spend many hours in Illustrator puting objects on many separate layers before importing?

Very complex overlapping of objects in this project. My adobe Illustrator art has many hundreds of objects on only about 5 layers. When I imported into Flash I can only get to individual objects by breaking apart the layers. The art is very complicated, interlacing of two human figures I didn't design but I copied from ancient 500BC Greek pottery art for an historical film I'm making.
I labeled every object in Illustrator but apparently loose that while importing into Flash. Should I spend hours more in Illustrator putting everything on separate layers that needs to be used in separate layers for overlapping before importing to Flash? Objects in Illustrator automatically appear on a separate line but I guess that is not the same as a separate layer when you import into Flash, right? I am concerned as to how I will be able to make some of these limbs or clothing with all the objects associated with them be moved into just one layer for the overlapping of these things is very complex and I am certain it will take forever to figure out how to rearrange for proper overlapping order if I make a lot more layers, if it is even possible without a work around in some cases. Frankly I am having difficulty with the concepts of objects in Flash vs how layers work in software like Photoshop. MAC OSX FLASH CS6.

Look closely at your import settings when you import your AI file. Unless you flatten the illustrator layers into bitmaps, none of the objects will be lost. If you double-click what seems to be one object in Flash, you will find that all the component parts are still in there.
However, keeping things organized with layers is good practice in Illustrator, whether or not you're using the product in Flash, so it might be a good practice to cultivate longer term.

Problem with hidden objects when moving layers, groups or artboards

Hi there,
I am using Illustrator CS5.5 on a Mac.
Sometimes, after moving stuff around (groups, layers or artboards), I notice that hidden objects didn't move with everything else.
Does somebody knows how this can be if no objects are locked ?
I cannot make this happen on purpose with a simple example and it is really annoying not to be sure that everything was moved properly.

A little misunderstanding here.
Like you say, clicking on the target to select (targeting objects) : this is exactly what I do.
So, SOMETIMES, when I select a group (not a layer) which contains hidden objects by clicking on its target in the layers panel, only the visible objects get selected (i.e. : only the visible objects get a full square at their right in the layers palette and the group gets a small square) AND the group is NOT targeted at all (i.e. : the target of the group is not highlighted, only the targets of the selected (visible) objects within the group are highlighted).
Then, if I move the group, only the visible objects are moved because only those are selected.
Problem is that I don't know why but when doing this (targeting objects), SOMETIMES this result in selecting everything within the group BUT SOMETIMES it result in selecting only the visible objects withtin the group.
I don't know what triggers that difference in behavior.

Illustrator Crashing when labeling Layers, Groups and Objects - Windows 7

For some reason Illustrator seems to crash (fairly consistently) when labeling Layers, groups and objects with a common label - so ctrl+v each label.
Generally, I can label around 3 in a row before it crashes. I've replicated this error working both on and off the network. Our operating system is Windows 7

Language: English UK
Group/ object label example: hr.style: gradient transparency.
this error seems to occur when the files are over 500KB - also the files are purely vector and contain very little in the way of transparencies.

Can not Group text and shape/object

I have previously made frequent use of grouping text and objects or images together. But in Keynote 4.0.2 this is not possible (for me at least). I am able to lock multiple images, but the group, mask and alpha buttons are not active when selecting a combination of the two (text and objects). Images or objects can be grouped together. Is this a bug or what ?

Open a NEW presentation (it should default to the Title and Subtitle slide of the theme)
Type some text into the Title
Insert a shape (square)
Select the shape and the Title
You should see that you cannot group anything with either the Title or Subtitle object of a slide. If you want to group text to an object, you have to create a new text object. Would this describe your inability to group (ie. limited to when you have Title/Subtitle selected?)

Filter Effect and Layer Style in the same layer vs separate layers

I'm adjusting a photographic image and am using both a filter effect and a layer style in the same layer on a Smart Object. I want to separate the two effects into two layers, so one layer has the filter effect (Nik) and one layer has the layer style (Color Overlay) (with the goal of merging/rasterizing the Nik filter effect with the Smart Object but keeping the layer style unmerged). I can make two layers and move one effect without problem, but the visual result of each effect on a separate layer is quite different from having both effects in the same layer. The Blend Mode for all my layers is Normal. Within the Color Overlay panel, the blend mode is Linear Burn.
I don't understand why the visual result is different. I'm not an advanced user of Photoshop, so maybe I'm missing something. This is a trial of CS6 that I'm using.

If you want two separate layers, then on the duplicate layer with the Color Overlay layer style you might try different layer blending modes.
For example, below looks the same having the Color Overlay with linear burn on the second layer and changing the layers blend mode to Hue.
You could also put the layer in a group and apply the layer style to the group.

Grouping of objects

Hello,
Is there a way of grouping text and a graphic imported from another application? I want to move add text into the middle of a page without altering the format of the rest of the text.

I'm not quite sure what you are really asking. A text box and a graphic object can be grouped.
If you just want to have a graphic on one side of the page with some of the adjacent text narrower than the main column of text, setting the graphic to cause Wrap may do what you want. You can also separate the text in question from the other text with a Layout break before and after. This allows you to set wider margins for the affected text, as well as the white space before and after it.

Need help placing images on separate layers

I'm a novice to Javascript but I've been trying to learn. I have a project where i need to place muliple images from a folder onto separate layers (same page) in a template. I tried to modify "ImageCatalogue" script within InDesign to disastrous results. On another thread someone was kind enough to give me a short script "Objects to Layers" written by Kasyan Servetsky. This was very helpful but not exact to my needs so now I'm starting from scratch. I've been playing with the following code trying to get it to work. It doesn't and I'm getting frustrated. I keep changing this line but it keeps coming back as "undefined":
myImage.place(newLayer);
Can someone please point me in the right direction? Is my coding too simple? The end comments are my wish list of add-ons should I ever get these layers working.

Fx Changing Smart objects on other layers

I have a simple set of shapes created in illustrator (created on separate layers) that I have pasted into PS as a smart object I have duplicated the Smart Object layer and then broken up each element by going back in to ILL to delete the other shapes so now each shape is on a sep PS layer. My problem is when I apply any effect to a single smart object layer it applies the Fx across all the shapes on all the layers in PS which I want to control separately.

I think I answered my own question. I didn't realize you can change a smart object into a smart object giving itself it's own autonomy

Can no longer paste objects from one lesson to another (Captivate 4)

Hello folks,
Until a few moments ago, I was able to copy elements (a combination of Captivate objects including text box, icon, and a text caption) from one lesson to another lesson (in a separate copy of Captivate 4). As a result of the copy/paste, I had a duplicate group of objects, complete with the same settings and x/y coordinates.
But suddenly, the only option I have after copying, is "Paste as image". Clearly, that is not what I want... I used to see "Paste Object".
Can anyone explain why I can no longer copy/paste objects?
BTW, I can still copy/paste within the same lesson.... but I can no longer copy/paste to a different lesson.
I hope this makes sense.

It would be great to add contrast to a selected group of objects.

Can we get some better color controls? It would be great to, for example, select a bunch of objects on various layers and adjust the contrast of the selected objects as a collective color group. You could fairly easily create an array of colors based on the the selected fills and strokes. Then adjust the contrast/brightness much as you do in Photoshop.
It would be great if you could unify the current color modification panels into one master control.
For instance, the following are some things we normally expect from bitmap color adjustments that would be equally useful in vector tools: (Some are currently present - but it would be nice as one master panel to adjust sliders for each of these.)
Brightness
Contrast
Saturation
Hue
Curves/Levels
If all these were present in one panel, you could make really quick color adjustments!
Combine this with a "Color Range" selection tool, and you could select all fills, strokes or even gradients, of a similar green color... and adjust the hue, saturation, brightness and contrast in one quick step.

Also, posterization/quantization of colors to reduce color palette. That would be really helpful!

I believe you can accomplish this by setting up separate user profiles for each of you on your Mac (System Preferences>Users & Groups (click the lock symbol if locked and provide the administrator name and password, then click the "+"). That should allow you to sign into separate iCloud accounts and maintain separate iTunes libraries within your respective user accounts.
