Can I have a dedicated external monitor in Premiere CS5/CS5.5 using two nVidia GPUs?

Hi there one and all.
I have a new Windows 7 64bit system and I am trying to work out if I can use my 2nd graphics card in a way to give me a dedicated external monitor output when using Premiere CS5.5? (and After Effects too if thats possible???)
My cards I have are the nVidia MSI GTX 470 and I have the choice of either my old nVidia 8800GT or old nVidia Quadro FX3700.
I can hook up 4 monitors as a desktop no problem, but I do not know if or how it is possible to display my Premiere timeline on the external monitor as a dedicated connection? If not do I maybe need something like the Black Magic Intensity/Shuttle card or Matrox Mini?
Any help would be very greatly appreciated.
Thanks - Bradley

Thanks Harm for such a quick response! much appreciated.
I see you said a GTX 450 would work to give the dedicated external monitor, does this mean that my poor old 8800GT has finally dried up in terms of helping my system or is it possible to use this card to provide a source monitor for Premiere?
With regards to the setting up of the 2nd card to not use the Hardware MPE, is this set from within premiere?
Thanks again!
Brad

  • How can I set up an external monitor to extend my screen in windows 7 bootcamp?

How can I set up an external monitor to extend my screen in windows 7 bootcamp?  I have updated bootcamp to the latest version.  The monitor I have works while I am using Mac OS X. While in bootcamp the monitor is dectected and I am able to select the settings and displays however the external monitor remains alseep.  I hooked it up using a mini display port to VGA adapter.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks

On your Windows desktop right click and select Screen resolution from the menu. You should see a window like this:
Make sure you select Extend and then set your resolutions for each monitor.
If this does not work for you try asking on a Windows forum about extending displays to a second monitor.

    Hey Starmanpaul43,
If you haven't already, I would run through the steps in this article, which can help you troubleshoot the external monitor issue:

Does the iPad3 support external monitors, allowing you to scan across two screens?

Some apps, such as Keynote, support different displays on the iPad screen and an external display. The iPad does not span it's "desktop" across screens, though; it only mirrors.

  • I would like to connect a monitor to my mac to use two screens, what cord will I need?

I would like to connect a 'non mac monitor' to my mac to use two screens, what cord will I need?

Have you found your question yet?
Well as you can tell this isn't very active especially when your asking a question in a cross platform trouble shooting forum.
You don't say what computer you have so no one can even guess, you should put the model/year of the computer your on and the Mac OS version your using into your profile so we can help you better. (Example, 2010 MacPro, OS10.6 and Windows 7.)
Try here and pick your computer to get more help. Click on the Communities link and then the Discussions link and you should find a post that has already asked your question or you can search and you should find a bunch also.
From what I understand your Mac needs to support dual monitors and you need to have 2 video ports available and just get an adapter if needed for the connection between the computer and the monitor.

  • Can't sign in on external monitor with MBP after Yosemite upgrade

After Yosemite upgrade, when I turn on my MBP, I can't sign in using external monitor with MBP, always could before Yosemite.  Blurred image of my wallpaper shows on monitor, can move arrow on external screen but sign-in only shows up on my computer screen, with no arrow.  Since there is no arrow on the computer screen, and no sign in box on the external monitor, I have to unplug the external video to sign in on the computer, then plug in the monitor again.  Any ideas?

    NOWEK,
Thanks for this suggestion, but so far no joy. I have zapped the PRAM, jammed the Frabitz and smashed the Gafrogsnicker, all to no avail. When the MBP restarts I get a blurred image (extreme "vibrancy") on the external monitor, but no images of the login accounts to choose from or the other options. However, on the MBP screen I get all that. The keyboard and mouse respond, but just doesn't display on the external monitor. This is of interest to me because I have the MBP down in a credenza with other related gear and the external monitor and keyboard up on my desk. It's true I don't have to do this often, but still, it just started this aggravation with Yosemite. Thanks for trying to help.

  • Can I have a second, external HD with a higher OS than my main drive?

I've started to come across a few programs that need OS X 10.4 or higher to run. I have a beautifully stable system with 10.2.8, and I hate to mess that up, especially since my internal CD drive has stopped running, and am using an external CD/DVD drive, which I'm told can't work as a startup drive if things go wrong. I'm not quite ready to bite the bullet and get a whole new computer, so I'm wondering if I got an external drive, could that one be set to run the few programs that need 10.4 (or 10.5)? How would that work? If it's going to cost too much money, I'd rather get a new laptop and network the two computers using airport extreme, but I calculated the cost of all the upgrades at about $2k, which I really don't have right now.
And if it's not doable -- what's the consensus on using 10.4 or 10.5 on these 17-inch 1 Ghz iMacs? I see a lot of problems in discussions on installing 10.4, and don't see that many entries on 10.5 -- is that because it's working well, or because these machines will pretty much choke on it?
    Thanks.

Thanks. I thought I could do something like that -- you used to be able to back in the pre-OSX days, but I don't pay as much attention as I used to, so I don't know if the new technology allows it.
One question -- in case the main machine crashes -- what's the key command or procedure for forcing the backup hard drive to serve as the the main drive to boot, or does the new system simply look around for any startup disk in case of failure?
Also, any recommendations for an inexpensive hard drive that will fill this role and connect to this iMac? I think it would have to be a Firewire -- both my ports are full, can I daisy-chain them somehow? From looking at all the cords back there, I think it's my external superdrive and my iPod dock. The iPod dock can easily be plugged in and out as needed, but the other two should be up full time, so I'd have to plug the dock somewhere. It will be nice to upgrade iTunes to version 7, if my ancient iPod will work with that. (My computer setup is very 2003).

  • Can MBA connect to 2 external monitors?

I have been using a dual-display graphics card in a PC for some time, with 2 monitors connected to make a large working area. Is it possible to do this with the MBA? Is the mini displayport to DVI compatible with dual-display? So far, I have been able to successfully use the MBA with lid closed connected with one external monitor. Cheers!

My impression is that the dual-display adaptor may work with one of those Y DVI splitters for dual-monitor cards. But is anyone certain about this?

  • Safari Can't Play Video in External Monitor

There have been a couple of threads on here about this but few answers that work.
For some reason, Safari 5 will not play web videos on an external monitor regardless of whether it's on YouTube or any other site. It will play videos on my primary Macbook monitor but only shows a black screen on my external. Firefox and Chrome certainly do. I prefer to use Safari and would like to know if anyone has a fix for this other than telling us to use the other browsers.
As indicated in the signature to this post, I have the original black Macbook and am using Snow Leopard.

This is ridiculous. Video windows simply don't show up on many sites for me, i.e., MacMost. No problems in Firefox. I tried all the aforementioned solutions, trashed prefs, disabled extensions, repaired permissions, etc. No good. Safari is supposed to be THE superior browser. I hate the idea of going to Firefox, but I may have to. Safari isn't worth the grief. Any other solutions are wekcome.

  • Can't see timeline on external monitor?

This may end up being something painfully obvious that I missed - in that case, sorry in advance. =)
I can't see the timeline. The setup is as follows: Firewire DV to camera>Svideo out of camera to external monitor.
AV settings: device control preset firewire ntsc, video playback Apple Firewire NTSC. AV Devices: Apple Firewire NTSC (mirror on desktop).
Under view menu: External video> all frames
    Video playback: Apple Firewire NTSC.
The camera is in VCR mode. I can control it from the log and capture window, so all connections are working. But the timeline will not show.
When the camera is in camera mode, I can see the number display on my external monitor.
Any idea where the problem lies here?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Can I switch to an external monitor on boot without OS?

I have a cracked screen and I freshly formatted the hard drive on Windows (So basically, my MAC has no OS but I have an installer). Will I be able to switch to an external monitor on boot so I could see the OS installation well? if so, how do I switch?

Not in a position to test this exactly right now so I am just speculating.
IF this is possible, it should just be a matter of connecting your external display prior to booting, then booting the computer up (I suppose into the recovery partition, or an install disk). Since the computer recognizes the built in display and doesn't know its cracked, it will still display on there (unless you go into clamshell mode by closing the computer after it loads up the external display). I don't know if it will default to mirroring or extending.
Again, that is if it will work. Without an OS installed, I am not sure how it will behave.

  • Audio levels on an external monitor vary during playback when using HDMI audio

I've been having issues with movie playback using a large 1080p HDMI TV.   During playback the audio level will come in strong, go faint, then go strong again, but not on any sort of pattern I could discern.   It did this on three seperate movies legally purchased via iTunes.  I get audio and video without trouble, its just the audio goes soft when it shouldn't.
If you remember the VHS days and "MACROVISION" encoding, then you have an idea what it was doing, although it was the audio levels, not the video playback.
Is this a fault of the system, a DRM gremlin, or something else?

I think you may be onto something with the graphics card concept. The problem I am having only exists when I am working on an HD project. When I switched back to DV-NTSC then the monitor is fine during playback.
Yes, I am routing my external monitor through my DV deck, which is not an HD deck - so again, that could be another weak link in the chain.
This is the first HD project that I am editing, so obviously a few kinks still need to be worked out. My internal hard drive has 1.5 gigs of ram but I am not sure what the specs are on the graphics card.

  • Can you have more than one version of Premiere Elements on one computer

I have an Apple iMac 2.5GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB Memory running OSX 10.7.5. I currently have Adobe Premiere Elements 9 installed and just purchased Premiere 11. I know they changed a lot on the new version and want to make sure it performs well on this computer and want to keep the older version in case my previous projects don't mesh well with the newer version. Can I have both versions installed on this computer?

Having more than one version of PrE on a computer has never been an issue for many users. Some have had up to four installed, for testing, and for gaining familiarity with newer versions. I do not recall any having any issues, at least not any, that were posted.
While I seldom have more than one version of PrE installed, I often have several versions of Adobe Photoshop, and have never had an issue. Same with Adobe Audition, and PrPro. Most Adobe programs (Acrobat Reader is one exception) will install in totally different folders, and there are seldom confilcts.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Can the imac be an external monitor fr another system?

Hi, I am wonddering if the monitor portion of the imac can be used on a separate system. I am hoping to use it as an additional monitor for my laptop. This ould not be it's sole use but I would like to be able to do it occasionally. Is this possible?
    Kalel

No, it does not have a vga input.
    However,
If its a windows laptop, and you are not doing that requires video playback.
You can use windows remote desktop, which is similar to a vnc but gives you much better performance.
for example, I have been able to use photoshop remotely with acceptable performance, Microsoft word is almost as quick as running in on the physical machine.
The only things a vnc or remote desktop is not suitable for is video playback, games of course, intense graphics, and applications that make direct use of the audio hardware. (audio is redirected to the remote client)
