Can i host small game servers? HL2/Minecraft

Hi, my question here for today is, "Can i host a game server like garrys mod with verizon fios 15/5?". I would like to host a server with 10 people at max. The server wont be on for 24/7 just on the weekends and sometimes on the week days. Is it against the rules to host a server for verizon fios internet? But if it is against the rule, will these small server still effect the bandwidth by a lot that my internet is going to have to get cut off? I also sometimes host minecraft server for just my friend and I, which is about 7 people max.

This is incorrect.  A static IP address is not necesary to host a server.  A static IP address is needed to allow consistent access to a server by directly typing in its IP address, but who does that?  As long as you have a Fully Qualified Domain Name (www.examplename.com) there are many options to dynamically monitor and match your ever-changing verizon-assigned IP address to your static (constant) domain name.  It is called dynaic DNS resolution.  You install a small daemon (program) on your server and it monitors your IP address.  When it changes it updates the DNS entry.  It works great.
I just thought I would clear that up, having a dynamic IP address does NOT mean you cannot host a server.
As far as servers being against the TOS of verizon.  That's another thing.  Then you get into the question of what defines a server.  In the simplest sense, every computer is a server in that it "serves" data to other computers.  There are many, many programs that run on typical, consumer PC that "serve" information to multiple machines at once: torrents, games, VPNs, it goes on and on.  Put another way, I run a web server, not through verizon, but it gets almost not traffic, nn the other hand, when I host a game of of this or that, I'm streaming loads more data out to multiple users and at a rate and quantity that dwarfs the traffic from my "web server" or "VPN" server.
Now I just saw the last post above mine.  Very well put indeed.  That is the "reality" of what hosting a server would be like.  Very good reply above.
So, do you see how the term server can be so subjective.  So, the burden of proof falls on verizon to show that you violated the the TOS.  Would it be worth the money to prove it?
No, the whole point is to drive you to purchase a business plan from them.  That's all.  Dont sweat it.  Get DynDNS, and have a blast!\

    As eww said, that computer isn't specifically made for gaming. To get advanced graphics in a game, your computer needs what is called a "discrete" graphics processor, or GPU. This means a seperate chip that processes graphics. In Apple laptops, these are only found in the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro. It is not common to find these in laptops in general that are not expensive and high-end. What you have in yours is an "on-board" or "integrated" GPU. This means that graphics processing is done by a small portion of your main processor (the Intel i5 board). This takes away a portion of primary prossessing and dedicates it to graphics. This works perfectly find in most scenarios, but video rendering, gaming, and 3-D graphics tend to suffer. Most high-end, modern games require discrete GPUs to run at full quality these days.
    As far as running Windows 7 and Mac OS both, yes you absolutely can. If you install Windows 7 via Bootcamp (this would require you to have a Windows 7 CD), when you turn on your computer it will default to opening up in Mac OS. But if you hold down the Option key (bottom of the keyboard next to the Command button) while the computer is booting up, it will ask you if you want to open Windows or Mac OS.

    You mean in the money making fashion of Apple which doesn't make any money off the sale of paid apps with all free apps hosted and distributed by Apple at no charge to the developers with free apps? Apple keeps a percentage of the sales price for paid apps to cover associated expenses. The bulk of the revenue for paid apps is paid to the app developers with the developer for a paid app setting the price for their app.
    An app must be updated by the developer for the app to be included with the Game Center no different from an app needing to be updated by the developer for iOS4 to be suspended when leaving the app instead of being quit.

  • Problems playing and hosting online games via AEBS.

    Okay, I'm officially stumped. I've been trying to setup my AE base station to play a Command & Conquer Zero: Hour multiplayer games via Game Ranger. I'm connecting via Ethernet using an AE Router address of 10.0.1.1 and a computer IP address of 10.0.1.210. I've tried the following:
    1. Enabled default host at 10.0.1.210
    2. Turned on port mapping using the following settings:
    8186 - 10.0.1.210 - 8186
    8188 - 10.0.1.210 - 8188
    3. Turned off the firewall
    4. Turned on the firewall and created a Command & Conquer setting using the port name "Other" and inserting 8186, 8188 in both TCP and UDP port numbers.
    Nothing works. When I try to join a game I get a timeout error. When I try to host a game, I can see the other players but they can't connect or see me. Any suggestions?

    I have seen this in another discussions post, the number escapes me right now,
    Make sure that all sound card drivers are up to date,
    Make sure that you have DirectX 9.0C (Latest Version)
    Type: dxdiag
    Click "sound 1" or similarly named tab
    Slide bar to "basic acceleration"
    Exit
    Try that, see if it resolves it for you.

    I have just purchased two new games in the itunes store and although they are showing in the library (under applications) my previously purchased games are not. In Summary under games it will not let me choose selected games only 'all games' and when I press sync warns that the existing games will be replaced. How can I add these games without deleting the older ones? Also if I did want to remove a game from my ipod how do I do it?

    Clearly it ISN'T silly as it avoid issues like you are having right now. If you need more space, get an external hard drive. To me it is much sillier to only have your stuff on the iPod and no where else as the iPod, as a small portable player, is much more likely to be dropped, lost, damaged, stolen, forgotten somewhere, etc.
    While I am not familiar with the use of games on the iPod (I have never bought any) you can switch the iPod to manually manage and then you can add content to your iPod without losing what is already there. Perhaps it works for games as well.
    But long term, I strongly suggest you keep all your stuff in your library so if you need to (you have to perform a restore on the iPod, you lose it and buy a new one, etc.) you can very easily sync it all back to the iPod when needed.

    I have an old iPod Touch and just bought an iPad 2.  I'm able to transfer the apps to my iPad, but I can't seem to transfer the progress from games to it.  Can I transfer saved game data to the iPad so that I don't have to start the games from scratch?
    I'm not looking at playing the games on both devices - just starting the games on the iPad from where I left off on the iPod Touch.

    You could try restoring from the backup of the touch. If you restore the iPad from the backup of the iPod Touch these items will restore. The bold type bullet points (I made the type bold) indicate what you may be hoping to recover. If you restore from the backup, you still need to sync apps, music, vieos, photos etc., onto the iPad however.

    .local indicates local activity by the computer host Williams-macbook-pro.local=hostname@domain . The UID of 501 is the standard UID of a local computer administrator.
    Copy and paste this little script in your terminal:

    A return of "i am local" ensures there is no remote connection to your machine (through SSH).
    In the future, to avoid remote entry, I would recommend not posting your IP address though.

    I am trying to configure SJS-AS PE 8.1 to accomplish URL-Host-Based virtual servers as descibed in Example 3 of "Deploying Virtual Servers" in the document http://docs.sun.com/source/817-3652-10/agvirt.html (I know it's for v7, but it conceptually descibes exactly what I am trying to do).
    The document outlines the scenario perfectly, but gives no example of how exactly to configure the app server this way. My understanding from the admin guide is that a listener has to be unique on a port and address, so once I create it for 0.0.0.0:80, how can I assign it to multiple virtual servers?
    Can someone point me to some example showing how to configure the app server this way?

    Yes. why are we able to use the same port 80 for several software virtual servers. and then when it comes to use https, we have to use different ports?
    Besides, please let me know if it is possible to use SSL with Software and not Hardware virtual servers. As if the Admin guide says it is only possible with hardware VS.

  • New Cable Modem, could not host a game.

    I have a WRT54GS v4
    I just receved a new cable modem last week ( jan 19  2007 )  from my Internet provider and now i could not host game*  but i could join a game... ( via IP or game server ) The internet and IP phone work well. ( Modem brand & model is:  ARRIS   TM502G )
    My IP adress on my router is XX.XX.XXX **  for last 4 - 5 month. ( before and after Modem installation )
    I decided to bypass my router and connect my PC directly to the modem and is work ( i could host !  YES !... )  I check the IP adress of the Modem and it was different of the router adress... ? ( was ZZ.ZZ.ZZZ **  )
    I dicided to re-plug the router back to the modem and re-connected my PC back to the router.  Suprise... the IP adress is still the original one ( XX.XX.XXX **)
    I think my hosting probleme is coming from the router because it's work when connected directly to the cable Modem.
    Could you please help me to set up my router so i will be able to play again and host a game... Was working fine just before the new Modem with my router ( port and configuration was ok and have not change )

    can't think of anything else other than the MTU...try changing the MTU settings on the router to 1396...also , run TCP OPTIMISER on the computer...this will adjust the mtu settings of the NIC card on the computer....
