Can I hybrid-publish to .Mac AND another host?

I have a site with a lot of video clips, and am rapidly approaching the 4mg max for .Mac. I love the convenience of using iWeb and publishing automatically, and would like to continue utilizing the ease of that without bothering with having to FTP it to an outside host site every day. So I’m thinking of creating a hybrid – does it sound like this will work?
I use the Blog or Video archetypes to create new entries, so that visitors can subscribe and be notified of new entries. What I would like to do is archive older video entries on an outside host – these would be pages that won’t be changing anymore, so I think I could just do an Archive page and “link to a webpage” for them without iWeb needing to reload anything every time I publish. A “Return” button would bring them back to the Archive page on my .Mac site.
Workable? Crazy? Any votes?

Hi Cynthia!
I am already doing something similar... I am uploading my videos and stuff to Google Video (http://video.google.com) and then editing the HTML pages that iWeb publishes in order to show the videos through my page. Here is an example...
Putt-Putt's Deleted Scenes
I use the basic method of adding HTML to iWeb pages to reserve "windows" on the iWeb page so that the videos can show through via Google video (by means of the embedded HTML code from Google). Here are the instructions for adding external HTML to your iWeb pages...
Adding HTML to iWeb pages
Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck!

  • Publishing on .Mac versus another hosting plan

I published the same Blog on .Mac and another hosting plan and get different results. To publish to my hosting plan at aPlus.net I first publish to a folder on my disk and then ftp that folder to my host.
At ,Mac the Blog works fine. At aPlus.net when I click on the first entry I get the following error
    Not Found
The requested URL /Investing/Blog/Entries/2007/8/18The_week_afterpill….html was not found on this server.
Note the strange characers inserted after pilla....I have published the same stuff several times to a different folder and have ftp-ed several copies of this folder to aPlus. but the results are different compared to .Mac
You can check it out by going to these two sites and click on the first entry

This is the copy residing on .Mac
    http://www.dokuspublishing.com/Investing/Blog/Blog.html
this is the same blog residing at aPlus.net
Where do these strange characters come from and how come publishing to .Mac and to another host turn out to produce different results ?
    Anyone?

Non-.Mac servers sometimes have more restrictions on characters they will accept. Yours is perhaps not accepting the ellipsis in UTF-8.
One thing you could try is to put an .htaccess file in your web space with the entry "SecFilterEngine Off" and/or "SecFilterCheckUnicodeEncoding Off" (without quotes).
A utility for fixing filenames with accented characters is available here.

  • What are the benefits to publishing to .mac vs. another host like Godaddy?

It seems that .mac is much slower in viewing my web pages vs. Godaddy. I understand that I have to upload manually via FTP with Godaddy and the additional cost of paying for another host, but are there any benefits or functionality with iWeb that I will loose if I do not host at .mac?
    Thanks in advance.

These features are only available If you publish your site to GoDaddy, etc., but not to .mac.
receive emails addressed to [email protected] (.Mac only accepts mail addressed to [email protected])
10+ times the space for the same price
    unlimited email accounts
    faster page loads
    more bandwidth
    etc, etc
.Mac has slicker Albums but publishing iWeb to a folder creates Albums that are slick enough.

  • My question is that if I am using Mac and another friend of mine is using Ipad mini and her skpe isnt working and we want to share screens how can we do it through Ichat? Since on facetime screens cant be shared!

My question is that if I am using Mac and another friend of mine is using Ipad mini and her skpe isnt working and we want to share screens how can we do it through Ichat? Since on facetime screens cant be shared!

    Hi,
    You can't.
Messages - the replacement for iChat in Mountain Lion and beyond will  do Screen Sharing  but only to the accounts it did in iChat 5 and 6  (actually it includes iChat 4 as well)
That is to say in earlier version of iChat you could login to AIM and Jabber servers as well as enabling the Bonjour option to chat on your LAN.
All these will do Video and Audio only chats which in turn means they will Screen Share.
At iChat 6 an Yahoo option was added but it can only Text chat (it can't even send Files or Pics)
This means only the Internet able accounts that login in to AIM or to a Jabber server  can Video and therefore Screen Share.
The iMessages account will Invoke FaceTime if you use the Video icon during text chat.  (I.e. it is not Video inside the app like the AIM or Jabber accounts can do)
    NOTE.
AIM includes Apple Issued Apple ID as Valid AIM Screen Names.
Google Mail ID s can be used and Google Talk IDs with Messages as they run a Jabber server.
Facebook allow you to create a Chat ID (Facebook Chat ID) which is also a Jabber server.

  • HT1284 Can I back up my Mac and my pc to the same external hard drive?  If so, could you explain how? Thanks.

Can I back up my Mac and my pc to the same external hard drive?  If so, could you explain how? Thanks.  I am a new user with mountain lion.

You could partition the drive into 2 partitions.  One formatted as HFS+ for Mac OS X back, and one formatted as NTFS for Windows backup.
You would have to move the drive from system to system to do your backups.  If there are 2 systems, I would suggest just getting separate drives for each, unless they are both laptops, then you will be disconnecting the drives all the time anyway.
Unless Windows is running in a virtual machine on your Mac.  Then a partitioned drive would be fine.

  • What format i should use for my external hard drive that can be used interchangeably between mac and pc?

What format i should use for my external hard drive that can be used interchangeably between mac and pc?

Usually Fat32/MS-DOS as mentioned, but that has several limitatiuns, like 4GB filesize limit.
One option is MacDrive for you PCs... allows them to Read/Write HFS+...

  • Can I speak into my mac and save it as an audio file with garage band

Can I speak into my mac and save it as digital audio file?

Looking at the specs, the mini does not appear to have a built-in microphone as the iMacs do. You can't just plug a microphone into the input socket, as that is line level and a microphone doesn't have enough output. Your easiest move would be to buy a USB headset such as the one Plantronics makes for use with Skype: this should work straight off.
Sound Recorder is a simple audio recorder: I've not used it, so I don't know if it's any good, but it would at least cost you nothing to try it.
Amadeus II and Amadeus Pro are reasonably priced and are fully featured sound recorders and editors which can save in a number of formats.

  • Can I take my old mac and make it into an external hard drive

Can I take my old mac and make it into an external hard drive? It does not work anymore but I would like to make it into an external hard drive. I heard it is not to hard to do myself but I have important information I would like off of it and only really trust the apple store to do it. I know it is possible because I have had a friend that had it done after water went on her laptop. I would like to also know how much is this going to cost and if it is even worth getting done at the store or just do it myself.

Can it boot to Target Disk Mode
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
Otherwise just take the HD out and put it in an external enclosure.

  • Publish to .mac AND other server

    Question:
I already publish to .mac - no problems there. I need to publish another website on another server. I published to a folder, used Fetch to upload it - works great (I know I lose some of iWeb's features, but that can't be helped).
Here is my question - now when I publish to .mac - the second site I created for the other server loads on my .mac space also. This is not a huge deal - I have no links from one site to the other, it just seems like a waste of space. Is there a way I can choose to upload only my primary site to .mac and not the other one as well?
    Scott

    Hi Scott,
The best thing to do in your case is to separate your two sites into two separate Domain files. That way the two sites can be edited and published independently from one another, so you don't have to have both sites uploaded to .Mac.
If you are in sort of the beginning stages of doing this second site, it might be easiest to start over in a new Domain file. If however, you do not wish to start over with the second site, then splitting off this second site to another Domain file can be done as well.
I'll refer you to a page put up by Mark Heaton (Apnewbie) on the process of domain separation...
    http://web.mac.com/mark8heaton/iWeb/DomainSeparation
You might also find this iWeb helper application called "iWebSites" useful in managing your multiple domain files and creating new domain files, etc...

  • Publish to .mac and redirect

Is it possible to publish a site I made with iweb to .mac and then have it redirected to another domain name?

They are asking for the IP address but I only know
the URL. What do I do to redirect to .mac now?
You can't use the IP address, only the URL. If the people you are working with will not offer you the kind of "Domain Forwarding" service that uses the URL (sometimes they want to charge extra), you will need to change the place where you have your domain name.

  • I have one apple ID for my MAC and another used for both my iPhone and IPad.  Purchases from iTunes don't appear on either my iPhone or iPad only only the MAC. How do I sync the two IDs?

I have one Apple ID for my MAC and iTunes account and another that is used for both my iTunes and iPad.  When I purchased music from iTunes using the Mac ID, the music isn't available on my iTunes or iPad.  Neither lets me change my ID so how do I fix this issue so I can play the music on all three?

    Hello chlanli
You would need to use one Apple ID for purchases in order to get them across all of your devices and computer. If you want you can use one Apple ID for purchases and the other one to sync personal data. The article below will explain further.

  • New drive -  can i not use on mac and windows?

A year ago i bought a usb 2 wd external drive which i formatted on windows so that i could use it on both mac and osx - No probs.
I now have a seagate 750gb firewire 400 drive (thats formatted to NT) i want to do the same as i did with the usb2 0 ie format on windows so that i can use on mac and xp.
In the seagate manual it says that swapping data between windows and osx is BAD and YOU WILL LOSE DATA if you do this (it says i need madrive - but what if i want to get data of a college drive, or someone who doesnt want macdrive installed?)- is this manual statement true? i havent lost any data between my usb2 drive in the year ive had it!
Also, formatting the seagate drive to ms-dos file system on mac - this makes it mac only doesnt it?

    Hi,
I do the same with my two WD externals.
You would need MacDrive if you want to use the NTFS (NT filse system) with the Seagate.
But if you choose FAT32 (that's what OSX calls MS-DOS) you don't need any kind of extra software to access (read/write) it from both Mac and PC.
One minor issue with FAT32 (MS-DOS) is, that the file size of a single file is limited to 4GB.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Can i back up my mac and windows operating system on the one hard drive?

Hello everyone, i use a 4TB external hard drive to back up my imac. I recently installed Parallels and Windows 8.1 so I can run a PMS for my business. Now that i have installed Parallels and windows 8.1 on the mac can i format the drive so it will back up the mac and the windows operating system? Thanks!

If you want to back up with Time Machine, you need a GUID partition table and an HFS (Mac OS X) partition. If you can also create a Windows partition without destroying the partition table, then you can use the same drive for both systems. I can't give you specific instructions for Windows.

  • Can't copy music between Mac and Windows

    Here's my configuration:
    PC: Windows 7, Itunes 10.7
    Mac: 10.6.8, Itunes 10.7
Both are on the same minor release, 21
    The behavior I'm observing:
I use Home Sharing from both computers, using the same Apple ID on both.
On the PC, I can see the Mac's music library, and I can copy items from that library to the PC. I cannot copy an item from the PC to the Mac
On the Mac, I can see the PCs library listed, but when I click on it, it acts as though it's making a connection, but the connection never completes.
I have attempted to do this with two separate Apple IDs. This worked just fine before the iTunes 10.7 installation.
Any thoughts on what might be going on?

    Yes, both are authorized.
I tried exporting the "Library" on the PC (that's where 95% of the tunes are) and imported them onto the Mac and only the tunes that are resident on the Mac show up in the imported list. It does show ALL the playlists but like I said, only those songs that are already resident on the Mac show up.

  • 10.5.3 can't turn off my mac and programs get stuck

I've installed the latest OS X Leopard update (10.5.3) and since then I'm having serious problems with my Macbook Pro. The iMac of my girlfriend has the update as well but everything is working fine there.
Problem 1: Can't turn off my mac
When I want to turn off my mac I end up with my background and a little spinning wheel. This goes on forever, it seems my mac gets stuck at that point.
    Problem 2: Programs get stuck
Since 10.5.3 programs get stuck much faster and when they do Force Quit doesn't work anymore. The program gets stuck and restarting the program can't be done.
Affected programs: Mail, Safari, Camino, NewsFire, Dock
Does anyone has the same problems or does anyone knows what's going on?
    My Macbook Pro:
    MacBook Pro 15"
    Intel Core Duo 2.16 GHz

HI Guust - yeah having a similar problem with an application freezing, although it is just Photoshop CS2 and I can force quite after 2 goes though!! I hope you get a result from this forum - I have been a mac user for 12 years plus and yes there were always problems with updates but never quite as dramatic as this and there were normally fairly easy solutions!
    GOOD LUCK!
