Can I import a DVD to Imovie

OK, this may sound strange. I converted some analog (Hi 8) tapes to Imovie HD using my old camcorder hooked to my new Sony digital camcorder (and then to my Imac via Firewire). I then made movies using IDVD (no editing - as is). I did this because I was giving my old analog camcorder to my daughter who lives out of state and didn't have time to do all of the editing at the time and didn't have enough space on disk to store all of these movies (projects). Yes, after I burned the DVDs I trashed the Imovie files to recover the disk space. Now I would like to use these DVDs to import the unedited movies into Imovie HD, edit them, and burn the results. Any way to do this, or do I have to locate a local Hi 8 camcorder and start over?

DVD import/conversion can be accomplished with these tools:
* DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
* Apple mpeg2 plugin (20$) + Streamclip (free)
* Cinematize >60$
* Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
* Toast6/7 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
* connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and copy to tape/use as converter

    How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

    No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
    Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

    You might want to look at this one too.  Very easy to use and it doesn't require the Apple MPEG-2 playback component.

  • After I import a movie file from the camera memory card, Imovie 10.0.1 acts as if the memory card is empty though I know it isn't.... I can't import that file to iMovie again.. is that the way it worksnow?  Thank you, Filippo

    On IMac 10.9  After I import a movie file from the camera memory card to Imovie 10.0.1 it acts as if the memory card is empty though I know it isn't.... I can't import that file to iMovie again.. is that the way it works now?  Anyone know?  Thanks, Filippo

    I would like to know this too. I imported a lot of files, then Imovie crashed. I went back in and they are not in imovie at all.
    I reconnected the camcorder to import again and though they are still on the camcorder, I no longer see them in the available list of files to import. I'm sure there is some sort of simple setting somewhere that reveals all files even if it thinks they are imported.
    Thanks

  • Hi, I can not import video files into iMovie.

    I can open iMovie however can not import video files. the iMovie application just hangs and I have to force quit to start again and once again get the same problem.
    I have uninstalled and reinstalled iMovie.

    Yosemite sometimes has problems, often related to "default" permissions needing to be changed

    Where are your MPEG stored?
    I have hundreds of old MPEGs stored in my nexternal drive, but unfortunatly i was not able import them into iMovie. I did the following trick: I created a new set of a folder and subfolder and called it "Virtual_CAM/DCIM" and saved it on my desktop. Then went to Disk Utilities>File Menue>New>Disk Image from Folder. Then selected the folder on my desktop and clicked enter. I moved the .dmg file to my external (or just keep it on your desktop). I clicked on the .dmg file. It shoud be visible on the Finder. Open your Imovie and import as you do from your camera.

  • How to import a DVD to imovie?

    I would want to import a DVD to imovie to make a film .Is it possible ?

    You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
    which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    (unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
    Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
    For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
    Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
    The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
    To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
    The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • How can i import a dvd recorded on PC into imovie

    I recently moved from a PC to a mac. on my PC I recorded old video tapes onto DVD's. I now want to put these DVD into imovie so that it can be edited
    The DVD is registering on the desktop, but imovie doesn't let me import it. any help with this would be very welcome

    If it's a standard set-top playable DVD it needs to be ripped. You can use MPEG Streamclip to do but you will have to purchase MPEG-2 playback component from Apple. You convert the media to QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate Codec.
