Can I import AVI QuickTime home movies into iTunes

I have some home movies I would like to place into my iTunes. I take the icon of the movie, and I place it over the iTunes and a plus sign appears, however when I release the mouse, the movie does not imports into iTunes.
I have also tried to go to the iTunes menu, choosing file, add to library and choosing the file. But it does not work ether. I still do not see that the video has been imported into my iTunes.
Can any one tell me what am I doing wrong?
I thought it would be easy to import my videos to iTunes.
The music videos I have downloaded from the iTunes store have downloaded well. Are they a different format?
Hope you can help.

I don't think iTunes will take AVI files directly. You will have to convert it.

How can I import Windows Media Player Playlists, into iTunes Playlists, with Music . .  for an iPod
We are having no luck with the thousands of songs we have to manualy add to a particular playlist in iTunes alone. .. there must be a simpler way! How can this be done . . . if there is and it's complicated, is the Genius allowed to help us out with this? They seem to only master Mac's only. .  or can they help us? PL E A SE E E  HELLPPP!

    tt2,
Your very helpful and knowledgeable. I for one appreciate all the hardwork and help you have been giving the people on theses lists, especially with the problems associated with the "importing playlists" from windows media. Unfortunately I need more help if you or someone else can provide it. I followed all the steps you have instructed so far in the threads I have seen. Unfortunately nothing so far works for me. Maybe you or someone can help me, I'd really appreciate it. I tried the notepad++ method and when I click on save I always get a notepad file that my iTunes can't do anything with. I click the "convert to UTF-8 without BOM" then click save as and it still saves as a notepad file. I am also unable to find the \n\ file path to replace with my \C:\ filepath. Here is a copy of the first part of one of my playlists:

Now I went and switched the part from  <media src="..\ to <media src="C:\ in all the files in hopes that was where I am supposed to have my drive letter but it didn't seem to help. Please forgive my encoding ignorance if that's what my problem is. I hope you can help.  Thanks in advance.

  • How can I get my own home movies into the Video app in iOS 5

How can I get my own home movies to be visible in the Video app in iOS 5.
where do I place them and what format does iPhone want it to be in?
    thanks

Thanks for this info Johnathan, it answers part of my question about format.
I also want the videos I'm transfering to be visible in the "Video" app on my iPhone (I dont have an iPad, Yet. )
Right now, in order to see my videos I have to share iPhoto albums/etc.. from within iTunes. this mixes them up within the "Photo" app. Don't get me wrong, that is great, at least I can see them there in an album I made for "Home Movies". but I would like to know if there is a way to make them visible to the "Video" app which has catagories like "Podcast" & "Music Videos".
I'd lke to add a "Home Movies" catagory there and
Has anyone out there done this?
Ance again, thanks for the info

After reviewing your post, it sounds like you are having trouble importing music into iTunes. A frustrating situation for sure. The first article should help get the music imported. The second article shows what formats are compatible with iTunes.

  • Is there any way to import my OWN DVD movies into iTunes and my video iPod?

I just purchased the new 30 GB video iPod last week, and although I have already purchased a few movies from the iTunes store, I wanted to know if there was a way to import a DVD movie from my own DVD library like we can with our own music CDs?
    Thanks,
    Suzanne

"That's too bad, because these are movies (DVDs) that I own and have purchased legally myself. How is that different from importing your own purchased CDs into iTunes? Seems like a double standard to me."
About "legally owning" the DVDs - Yes, I understand, and I'm figuring that most folks who want to put their DVDs onto their iPod are owning the movies legally (or, at least, it appears so).
That's not really the issue here, though.
The problem is, there is an encryption that is written onto regular, copyrighted DVDs (i.e., movies). In order to get that onto your iPod, you will have to use software on your computer that breaks that encryption, and makes the file into some more "normal" format, like say, MP4.
This action can arguably be considered as illegal, in a sense, since you are removing the encryption that's on DVD, which is protecting it from being easily copied, and transferred around. (which would be illegal).
This is a bit different than CDs, since, although they are copyrighted too, the songs are usually not in a protected format.
If you have a song that you've purchased from the iTunes Store, and you want to break into that "protected" file format, that's the same kind of issue as the DVD ripping.
(Notice that the Hosts included that into the ADUA as well, right along with DVD ripping.)
...It's quite an interesting kind of subject, isn't it?

  • Why can't I import an iMovie clip (.MOV) into iTunes?

After importing HD video (from a Canon Vixia HV40) into iMovie 11 (v 9.04) at 960x540 resolution, you get a bunch of .mov files. Does anyone know why those .mov files, as they come out of the import process, will not import into iTunes?
Here are the details. My brother wanted to put a small one onto his iPad. I told him the simplest way (or so I thought) to do it would be to import the .mov file into iTunes (v 10.6.1) and then sync his iPad. There was no need to make a project from the single clip, then share it. However, iTunes will not import any of the .mov files made with the iMovie import. Does anyone know why? This happens on my iMac (core i7) and his (core i5). Of course, if I open the .mov file in QuickTime Player (v 10.1) then export to a .m4v file (export setting "iPad, iPhone & Apple TV"), the new file imports into iTunes just fine. In case iTunes thinks you shouldn't be importing clips from the iMovie events folder, I dragged the clip to the desktop and tried the import, but that did not work either.
I guess what this comes down to is given that iMovie, QuickTime Player and iTunes all come from Apple, why can iMovie and QuickTime Player read the file while iTunes cannot? I would think the same code would be in all three products (do the iMovie and QuickTime Player developers refuse to share, while the iTunes developers are lazy?).

I had this problem also, only the .m4v files could not be imported either! The strange thing was I was able to do this task with other home vids in the past without issue. I simply shut everything down and rebooted at this point as a last dithch effort to avoid a trip to the Apple store and then it worked - itunes was able to accept the import.

  • Importing home movies into itunes

i know that you can import home movies from imovie into itunes and then import it onto your ipod, but im not sure on how you do that.

Go to the "FIle" menu, select "Export", and select the iPod icon. Only works in iMovie 6.0 (iLife '06).

  • I can't import mp3 downloads I have into iTunes.

I have tried to drag the mp3 file and drop it directly into my iTunes but it wont show the song in my library. Doing this worked up until about a week ago and now I can't seem to be able to import any of my mp3 files. I've tried going into 'File' and clicking on 'add file to library' and selecting the mp3 file i want to import and it doesn't say that there is a problem with transferring it but none of the songs will show up in my library still and it's extremely frustrating.

  • Imprting home movies into IT7

I have been able to import (if that is the right word) my edited home movies into iTunes 7. I think this will be a neat way to organize these.
These are movies initially edited and then saved out of iMovie as CD-ROM quality QuickTime movies, and stored in a folder called "Completed Movies" inside my "Movies" folder. I have been able to use iTunes to categorize them by year, genre, etc. I think this will work rather well to organize my movies, and may motivate me to clean up all the loose video I have on my hard drive.
Questions? Have I really imported these movies into iTunes7? Or as I suspect, is iTunes just acting as a organizer of all this data, be it music, movies, podcast, etc? Depending on how iTunes work, how do I then upgrade to another Mac and keep all the organization intact? THANKS!
    iMAC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I think only mp4 variants work.  Definitely not mpeg2 or Flash.  If you have mp4s you could try changing the extension to .m4v

  • Itunes 12 can't import shared home movie to iTunes library

HI. I am trying to import, or add to my desktop iTunes library, a shared home movie. I have file sharing turned on with both my laptop and desktop. I can see, from my desktop, the shared home movies, and I can even play them, but I cannot find an option to import them into the desktop library. I use my desktop to sync my iPad and ultimately I want to add the movies to my iPad. How do I import a shared home movie from my laptop to desktop, not just see it and play it from sharing?

Join the crowd. If you search this and other forums on the web, you'll find that Home Sharing has limited functionality on PC and Mixed PC-Mac networks. It works fine, Mac to Mac, it appears, but PC's seem unable to talk to Macs or one another on many, many, many people's home shared networks. I hope that Apple finds a way to improve this aspect of iTunes or at least expands its troubleshooting recommendations in the support database.

  • Can I download DVD home movies into imovies?

Can I download DVD home movies into imovie to edit and create enhanced DVDs?

    Yes.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
