Can I import/edit AVCHD (1920x1080, 60FPS) in Imovie 10.0.04?

Can I import and edit AVCHD (1920x1080, 60Fps) in Imovie version 10.0.04?

Thanks for the responce but unfortunately Precision Editor is greyed out just like all of the other editing tools. I hope Apple is working on a fix because I have some videos I'm trying to finish.

  • Can't import video from Sony DVR to iMovie 4

Help please. I have been looking through the discussion threads and have found similar problems but haven't found a solution that works for me.
I am connecting a Sony HC32 through iLink (firewire) to import a video into iMovie 4. iMovie recognizes the camera is connected and I can control the camera through the controls within iMovie, but the images never show on the screen. They only show in the view finder of the camera. The sony manual is no use, neither is their site.
The camera is set to USB Stream (as was suggested by the sony manual). the other options are STD-USB and PictBridge. (which also didn't work)
    Additional helpful details.
    I recorded in SP mode
I have powered off my mac (even unplugging from wall).
I have unplugged the firewire and plugged it back in (both from camera and from mac.)
I have verified the time/date are set on the camera
I have even tried importing both from battery power and from AC adaptor.
does anyone else have this camera? Am I missing a setting on the camera? this is my first video camera. I have a few still cameras and iPhoto is so easy! I figured iMovie would be just as simple.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Sue,
I don't know exactly what did the trick but here's what I did and it works like a charm. (Just in case someone else runs into the same issue)
I used the Garage Band reset.
Video camera set to USB-PLY/EDT = USB STREAM (the other options are PictBridge and STD-USB and no way to select "null")
    Camera in the dock
    Firewire directly attached to iMac
Firewire in dock (the only way to plug in)
USB Streaming option on dock set to "Off"
Camera powered by AC adaptor rather than battery.
    Open iMovie
    Turn on camera.
I don't know if this is the only way it will work because I tried so many things (including turning the dock USB streaming on/off) but this seems to be the ticket for me so I am always going to follow this process.
thanks again for your help and suggestions.

  • Can't import photos from new "Photo" into iMovie 9.0.

Since upgrading to the new Photo app, iMovie 9.0 only recognizes Photo Booth.  Previously I could drag and drop selected photos into iMovie, but now can't import them that way or through the Photo Browser in iMovie.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for your insight.  Over the course of about a week, I did persistently try to upgrade to iMovie 10 but, despite the help of the Apple Support Community, could not get all my projects to migrate properly from iMovie 9 to 10.  Many of them Many of the 300 short projects come in a jumbled mess.  So I'm stuck with iMovie 9, which, in turn, means Photos won't connect properly when working with iMovie.  At least I know to stop trying and I'm able to go back to iPhoto without suffering any repercussions.

  • Can't Import Sony AVCHD Using Log and Transfer

    HI
I have been importing AVCHD footage from all kinds of cameras, mainly Panasonics for over 4 years now using Final Cut Pro 7.  I just got a new Sony NEX-EA50 but when I try to import the footage using Log and Transfer, it does not show up.  When I try to drop the card folder into the window I get the ""PRIVATE" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media." message.
The only way I can import the footage is using Toast, but that is a pain in the *** because it is a hassle to rename and scan the clips before I import.
Does anybody know whats going on?  Did Sony purposely change their file directory system so it couldn't be read by FCP?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
What framerate did you shoot ?
Log and Transfer will not recognise non standard frame rates such as 50 fps or 60fps. Toast, Clipwrap etc is an option but there is another. If you have the Panasonic AVCCAM importer Quicktime plug in, it will allow you to convert to Pro Res through Mpeg Streamclip or Compressor.
    DM
Hang on, are you pointing log and transfer at the ROOT folder and not the folders inside.

  • Can't import edited song from iTunes to iPhoto

    Hi,
I've created a slideshow in iPhoto and a playlist in iTunes to go with the slideshow. I shortened one of the songs in the playlist from 4.5 minutes to 1.5 minutes (file-get info-options). Within iTunes the song is shortened but when I import the playlist to iPhoto the song reverts back to its original length. I realise there is a workaround using iDVD (when I import the song into iDVD it stays at 1.5 minutes unlike iPhoto) but it means I have to redo the whole slideshow again which I'd prefer to avoid.
Has anyone any suggestions how to shorten a song for a slideshow within iPhoto?

I don't build slide shows, so not sure how hard it is to do in iDVD, but you can burn a song to CD and then rip it back into iTunes. Then you can edit the song in Garage Band. You might want to do this with a number of songs that you might use in one sitting, as it's pretty tedious.
One other thought: check if Amazon has the mp3 of the same song. The content there is not protected (I think the music producers cut that deal just to stick it to Apple) and is $0.99 per song like on iTunes. Might be worth another buck to avoid all this hassle. iTunes is easier to search and buy from (IMO) and has a better selection, but you might get lucky at Amazon. I've ended up buying the same song again at Amazon just for this reason.

  • Can't import edited Soundbooth file into Premiere?

    Hi,
I've been editing a project and used Soundbooth to clean up the sound.  Worked well with several clips, the edited version appeared on the Premiere Timeline automatically, but the most recent one doesn't seem to import to the Timeline.  It did at first, but then then the sound was out of sync, not sure why (Perhaps because I had already put an audio effect on the original audio, which I've since deleted.)  I used command Z to get rid of the out of sync audio.  That worked and the non-edited sound version appeared back on the Timeline.  But now I want the edited sound version to appear back on the Timeline again (in sync, hopefully), but I can't get it to import from Soundbooth automatically as it did before.  What can I do?  I saved the audio in Soundbooth and it's still there with all the edits I've made.  I also tried to click on the un-edited audio in the Premiere Timeline and send the audio back to Soundbooth, but that only created a second, unedited file.  I don't want to have to reedit everything again, so what can I do?  Can I get the edited sound file to appear on the Timeline manually, or could I copy the edits from the first file to the second file and then have that appear in Premiere?  I'm using CS4.
    Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Never mind, looks like I fixed it importing the file from Premiere Pro and dragging and dropping it onto the Timeline.

  • Can I import edited photos (and their raw originals) from Aperture in groups, like 5-star images from a project?

I have 30,000 images in Aperture and it keeps crashing. I've run out of memory on my MacBook Pro running 10.8.6 and I want to switch over to Lightroom for all new photos and slowly migrate my best ones over to LR as well. I've edited many of my best shots already, probably 6000 or more, so I need to feel confident that cropping, editing, rating, and metadata will all migrate successfully.
Also, can I load the Lightroom itself onto an external hard drive and keep all my images off my laptop? If I edit them, do the edits remain on my laptop regardless of where the originals reside. I think that's the issue that I'm running into with Aperture:  edits stay on my laptop even though originals are on an external HD.
Thanks for your feedback on both of these matters.

Your photos can be on any hard disk, internal or external or network. If they are stored on an external hard disk, then when you import them into Lightroom, you select the ADD option and the photo will remain on your external hard disk. The edits are stored in your Lightroom catalog (as opposed to "remain on my laptop"). Once you import photos into Lightroom, you no longer want to manage them (move, copy, delete) using your operating system. You do all photo management in Lightroom.
If you transfer the photos properly, your edits, cropping, metadata, etc. will transfer to Lightroom, but I will leave the details to some expert on Aperture.
If I could offer some advice, I don't think you want to just transfer SOME of your photos to Lightroom. In my opinion, you want ALL of your photos managed by Lightroom, and not some in application 1 and some in application 2. This makes your life much easier when trying to find your photos, you don't have to think "Is this photo in Lightroom or is this in Aperture?"  (Note: this doesn't mean you have to import all the photos from Aperture into Lightroom in one HUGE operation; you can certainly do the importing in manageable sized groups)

  • Can't import edit from Garageband

I am trying to edit a song from itunes in Garageband and then import that to iDVD. The file that I create cannot be shared. It won't even drag into my project. Other iTunes songs will though, but not when it goes through Garageband.
One time it did work and it was the first time I tried. I remember when I saved that project something popped up and said something about saving it with a preview so that it can be shared with other programs. I don't know if this had something to do with it or not. I have never been asked that again and it has never worked.

In iM7 custom chapter markers need to be added to movies in garageband (that or download iM6 below). In imovie share the movie to the media browser, open garageband, add chapters and choose share to iDVD.

    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
Hope the above helps but if not just come on back.
(or if the above fails, you may also want to drag and drop the plist for GB as well as iDvd to the trash, restart your mac, and try your project again. you will need to reset some preferences in both apps after you do this).

  • How can I import dvds that have already into iMovie and edit them?

I just purchased an iMac and after Apple moved all of my movies into iMac from my PC, I am trying to edit the movies in iMovie that are in the iMac. Can't seem to figure this out. Is it possible to create a new movie from an .avi file? Also, why is it when I click on a frame in an iMovie it keeps going back to the first frame??? Whew , very frustrating!

Is it possible to create a new movie from an .avi file?
You'll have to convert the AVI to a format iMovie can accept. You might try the freeware MPEG StreamClip and see if it can handle your AVI, though AVI is just a container format and can use any number of codecs, some of  which have never been ported to Mac.
    Regards.

  • Best for editing AVCHD - Final Cut or iMovie

Pretty fundamental stuff, I guess, but I have an iMac with 4 Mb Ram and 1Tb storage. I work in a school and record footage on to a Canon HD camcorder. Sometimes I can import direct into iMovie and struggle to get a 2 hour end product to fit onto a DVD. Sometimes the import fails and I have to 'log and transfer' from the Canon to Final Cut 7; do titles and effects etc. then try every which way, in vein, to try and create a DVD.
If I export a quicktime movie from Final Cut it's like 100Gb compared to iMovie's 5.5Gb.
I've now got in a bit of a mess - there's clips, sequences, iMovie cache folders, PAR folders, iDVD project files, DVD Studio projects and .mov files all over my Mac. I keep running out of space and don't know what I can delete, because it's not apparent what belongs to what in the grand scheme.
Is it foolish to use a domestic single chip AVCHD camcorder with Final Cut Pro or can I just convert the AVCHD file in some way before I edit nd output it ?
Any tutorials on this stuff ???

.. First off I know nothing about iMovie, but plenty about FCP. ..
    +vice versa+ here ..
FC/p is +by far+ superior in its editing features compared to iM, for sure.. but bertieonamac's Q pointed into a diff. direction, and I dare to say, four your needs, the iLife-siute of apps is 'better'.
    why?
    a) Organizing.
iMovie09 automatically sorts into 'Events', based upon the assumptions, the recordings of one day are 'one' content. you can re-arrange that, build your own Events, change time-stamps, organize via keywords/tags. with a click, iM sorts you all content with 'Suzie/Goals/Explosions/...' iTunes for videos ..
FC/p 'allows' storing material anywhere & anyhow .. if you are not disciplined = clutter ..
    b) Convenience
80% of features, an average project needs, are offered by iM09 - from a bundle of dissolves, to cut-aways, green-screen, pic-in-pic .. for another poster, I made this web-site
    http://sites.google.com/site/karstenschluter/how-to-make-a-vidcast
to show a few options, iM09 offers.. done 'within minutes'
FC/p is a professional tool - it allows much better control, but asks for in-depth knowledge (example: Ken Burns - in iM start/end, in FC/p you have to understand the concept of key-frames etc)
    c) Simplicity
if you respect the restrictions, iM gives, it is 'plug'n play'. not every cam is supported, not every rec-mode is supported. the app itself has hundreds of limitations, two examples: a dissolve's length is max. half of a clip; only one 'effect' per clip .. etc etc. if you respect this limits, you don't have to care
    for codecs, aspect-ratios, renderings ..
    FC/p allows 'anything' - including getting-lost ..
    d) Concept
iDVD is limited to 120min max., incl. content in the menus. you told us, you struggle doing so.. it is simply not possible, by concept. shorten your project to 110, don't add 'movies' to animated menus but simple stills - done.
the 'share to iDVD' feature of iM uses a totally different setting in encoding than the simple 'Export QT'/timeline' feature of FC .. therefor a very diff. file-size ..
I dare to say, you don't know about how FC exports, nor about encoders.. iLife is a consumer-product.
FC/p asks for a in-depth understanding of video-technology. e.g. Compressor overwhelms the average user with zillions of options... FC/p is meant for someone, who uses these tools 8h/d ..
    summary:
    'Best for editing' - FC/p
'Best for editing on a consumer level' - iMovie09
.. independently of the codecs the cam uses ..
and Welcome, bertieonamac, to the  boards ..

  • Can't import from Canon Optura 10 into iMovie

I just bought a MacBook Pro 15 inch specifically for making/editing movies. I connected a 9pin-4pin DV Firewire Cable to my Canon Optura 10 (set in Play/VCR mode). The other end of the cable was connected to the Firewire port on the MacBook Pro. I opened up iMovie. Nothing pops out. I tried importing but only the MacBook Pro's built-in camera pops out.
The DV Firewire Cable I'm using is one year old. I never used it until now. Since I bought it (1 year ago), it's been stored safely in its package. It has a lifetime warranty.
Can someone please suggest or help me? Thanks. I am very disappointed right now because I bought this MacBook Pro for only one reason --- to edit my movies --- and that doesn't seem to work so far.

    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.
