Can I import my existing Itunes library to new  computer

I am sure that the last time I changed computers it was very simple to move the Itunes library using Export Library from the old computer and Import Library in the new computer, This simple mechanism seems to be no longer available,
I know that, in File/Library, there is an Export Library option but this produces a very small XML file which I believe is used for playlists - it is clearly not an export of the full library. There is also an Import Playlist facility for the new computer but no Import Library facility
So how should i go about transferring transferring my Itunes library to the new computer?

Thanks Diesel. That worked fine,
I am left feeling a bit silly as the answer was so straightforward. For some reason i was assuming that Itunes would never be so easy. I'm not sure what traumatic experience lay behind that feeling.
But thanks again
ps
I meant to mark your post as the answer but I can't see any obvious box to click

  • How can I transfer my iTunes library to new computer?

I have all of my songs on my iTunes library in a older computer. Just got a new computer and I don't know how to transfer my iTunes library from old computer to my new one. I tried out few ideas but i can't do the task.
I really appreciate any help or advice.

How about using an external drive? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
or follow this article using cd's and restore afterwards on your new computer. Don't forget to authorize your new computer in the store menu in itunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420

  • How do I move my Itunes library to new computer?

I have a new computer and two Iphones and one Itouch. One Itunes account.
I have a new computer running windows vista. I have most of my library on my older iphone but when i connected it to my new computer only some songs where transfered. When I go to sync my Iphone it says that the iphone is synced with another computer. I still have the old computer but want to sell it and already have a buyer.
I have a new Iphone plus the existing one and I also have an Itouch. I want to have the ability to have all my music on the new computer and to have the ability to connect both Iphones and the Itouch to the same computer. Each one would be able to load music from the same library. I also have two laptops which have itunes loaded. I know you can have up to 5 computers on one account and I have not exceeded that.
If possible, if there is a solution can you really dumb down (simplify) the solution.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network the two over ethernet and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. If the songs in your library are not all in the iTunes Music folder you can consolidate them. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them:
Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Mac
OS X 10.5 - Connecting two Mac computers using Ethernet
Another way is to put your original computer into target disk mode and copy the data over Firewire: How to use FireWire target disk mode
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a Mac this would be in Username/Music/. Everything has to be exactly the same on the new computer including the Mac user account name. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • Access to itunes library on new computer

I have got a new computer due to hard drive failure on old computer and unable to access Itunes library. Installed Itunes on new computer, how can I access my purchases and library as it doesnt show in new itunes

    Hi bribri232,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your songs were purchased from the iTunes Store, you can transfer them from your iPod to your new computer. You may also be able to download the songs to the computer through iTunes in the Clour or iTunes Match. This article has more information about your options:
    Media type
    Transfer method
Music purchased from the iTunes Store
    Transfer your content via iTunes.
Download your content through iTunes in the Cloud1.
Download your content through iTunes Match2.
Music imported from a CD or another source
iTunes cannot transfer this media back to a computer. Make sure to back up your iTunes Library, or you can use iTunes Match2.

  • Will 1st gen ipod touch still work with new itunes library on new computer (transfer didn't work from old computer)

Ok, so I have a new computer and wanted to transfer my itunes library from my old computer. I could not get the files to transfer. I downloaded the newest version of itunes and see that I can download my previously purchased music to the new computer. I have mp3's that I can add in on my own so I don't have a problem starting over in itunes.
My question is what happens when I plug in my 1st gen ipod touch and try to sync??? Will it erase what is on my ipod or will I be able to move the stuff from my ipod into my new itunes library?? Any info would be great...I'm happy with how my ipod is set up so I really don't want to mess with a good thing. Also, will I need to update and of my software on my ipod since it's 1st generation??
    Thanks for the help!!

You can only sync to one iTunes library/computer. If you do sync the iPod is erases and its contents replaced with what is in the iTunes library of the second computer.
    To avoid that see:

Yes, the 1G works with the latest iTunes.
    To transfer iTunes purchases:

In iTunes 11 use Control+B to show the Menu bar then go to iTunes>File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

  • Question re: moving iTunes library to new computer where files have different file path?

    Hi everyone-
I just got a new laptop and need to transfer my iTunes library to the new computer.
On my old computer, the hard drive was partitioned into a "C" drive and an "F" drive. The new laptop is just "C."
Since my iTunes library was on the "F" partition on the old laptop, the file path for all the files is going to change when I transfer to the new laptop.
I can find dozens and dozens of articles online about how to move iTunes to a new computer, but none of them seem to address the file path issue.
Does anyone know where I can find detailed instructions on how to make this work?
    Thanks in advance.

    Quit iTunes.
Move the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the F: drive.
    Hold Shift & launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you moved to the F: drive.
    Everything should still work fine.
Now go to iTunes prefs > Advanced.
Set the iTunes media folder location to the iTunes folder you just moved to the F: drive.
iTunes menu File > Library > Consolidate library.
This will copy all your media into the iTunes folder (F:\iTunes\iTunes media\ folder)
    Let it finsh.
    Quit iTunes.
Then you can copy the F:\iTunes\ folder to the new computer.
If you copy it to /Music/ folder, just start iTunes and it'll work.
If you copy it elswhere (such as another drive) hold Shift, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder.

  • Cannot copy my itunes library to new computer

Hey everyone, need some help. I just got a new computer, and I saved my itunes library to my ipod as instructed by the support area on this website. I loaded Itunes on my new computer and then followed the instructions to copy the library to my new computer. However, it's not working and I don't know what I am doing wrong. I moved the Itunes music folder under my documents on the C drive to the desktop. Then I plugged in the ipod, closed itunes, found the Itunes folder on my ipod from the drive under my computer. I can see the music transfering, however when I open Itunes, the music isn't there. I have tried opening the library file from Itunes, but nothing happens. Can anyone help me troubleshoot?
    Thanks!

Go to the top of this page, click "Support", then type "move itunes library" or similar into the search bar.

  • Transferring songs on Ipod to itunes library on new computer

I recently purchased a new computer and would like my ipod to synch with itunes on my new computer rather than uploading all my music again manually--- extremely time consuming. How do I do this without losing everything that is currently saved on my ipod???

Set your iPod to manual update. Do this on your original PC first then when you connect it to the new one, it won't auto-sync to the new empty library. There's a tutorial here:http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/ipgettingstartedt3.html
If you no longer have your old PC read this before connecting to the new one: "How to keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93779
If you still have your original PC, you can in fact use your iPod to migrate your current iTunes music folder to your new one: "How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173-en

  • Getting iTunes library onto new computer

Ok, so about a month ago, my computer died of a broken motherboard. the hard drive did survive, however, and now lives on in an external case. i purchased a new computer, and do not know how to go about getting all of my music onto it. i currently have:
    1) An iPod nano full of my music
    2) my old computer's hard drive, also full of the same music
    3) My new computer, with NO music at all on it
What would be the best way to get my entire music library into iTunes on my new computer? The iPod or the old computer's hard drive? what would be the easiest way to do it? i do have quite a few songs purchased from iTunes. Thanks in advance.

  • How can I use an existing iTunes library with a new iTunes account

My daughter is going to college, and wants to untangle herself from the family iTunes account. Right now, we have three iPods with libraries on three computers, all using my iTunes account - and have had no problems.
She has signed up for a new account, but her previously purchased songs (on my account) won't play on her computer (new computer, iTunes is currently almost empty library), because it is authorized to HER iTunes account.
What is the best way to import her iTunes library that was created using my account onto her new computer? (Old library is on a PC, she now has an iBook, purchased used on eBay.) Is there any way to get these songs to play using her new account info? Can I maybe copy them somewhere without the metadata and then move them into her library? I realize that would lose ratings and other info, but would it get rid of the block? I'm not trying to do anything dishonest - these are personal iPods, personal computers, all within one family, we've paid for all music on them.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!
(I posted this in the iTouch discussion, and then thought it wuold be better answered over here.)

Then can her computer be authorized to both accounts?
Absolutely. You can authorize any given computer to up to five iTunes Store accounts.
If purchases are made on her account, to a computer authorized to my account, can I put those songs on my iPod?
If you connect your iPod to her computer, yes. Tracks download only to the computer from which they're purchased, regardless of which iTunes Store account is used for the purchase. Or you could copy the tracks from her computer to yours and then authorize your computer to her iTunes Store account. But that's sort of defeating the original purpose, it would seem to me.
is it better to buy music through Amazon downloads and/or actually purchasing CDs to avoid the security features iTunes puts on its music?
That's certainly an option. If it's an entire album I want, I buy CDs. That way I can import them at the quality I want and to whichever of my systems I want. Amazon or one of the other download stores that offer tracks as MP3 are also an option, though for me download stores are best when you just want a couple of tracks off a given CD.

  • How can I move an existing iTunes library from a Dell PC (which uses Windows Vista) to a MacBook Pro?  I have tried to copy the library from the PC onto a memory stick but cannot move from the stick onto the MacBook Pro.

I have tried to copy my iTunes library from my old (2008) Dell PC to a 32 GB memory stick and then copy it from the stick to the iTunes library in the new MacBook Pro which I purchased recently from a reputable dealer which resells refurbished Macs, (lease returns, etc).  The dealer was Computer Trends store in Saskatoon.  They told me how to move my existing iTunes libary from the PC to the Mac but I cannot seem to achieve that objective.  The Mac does not seem to recognize the memory stick.  I thought the Mac would recognize that the memory stick held iTunes files and would then transfer them without prompting to its own iTunes libary.  It did not do so.  I have therefore tried to find the command sequence within iTunes (on the Mac) for moving the material from the memory stick to the iTunes library.  Cannot find those commands.  Does anybody know where to find such commands.  I have to say, I am really disappointed that such a simple function would prove to be beyond my capabilities.  I thought the Mac was supposed to be easier than a PC.  !!!  Oh well, I am hoping this forum will help !!!

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
So, you can see your whole iTunes folder on the memory stick after copying from the PC?

  • Can't import songs into itunes library...

For some reason it isn't working. I took a couple of songs off my ipod via ephpod and i tried opening them using the import function in itunes. I open it, but the songs aren't added into the library at all. Maybe it might be the file format? Anyone have anyway to convert the songs into the accepted format?

    Yep,
I have been having the exact same problem now for over a year. First, it was like six hundred songs--wouldnt play on my ipod and then wouldnt add into my itunes library. It happened to correspond with an update of itunes and the ipod firmware. It has only gotten worse and now I am in fear of updating anything further. I have been looking for answers to this problem for a long time, if you happen to get an answer that works would you let me know about it too?
    Thanks!
