Can I improve my 2009 iMac ?
I have 24" iMac purchased in 2009 , came with 2.66 Ghz, Intel core 2 Duo, 4 GB memory, Ive recently upgraded it to Maverick 10.9 and as I write there is another software update in progress!
I've never had a problem with this computer and always recommend iMac or apple to friends , my question is , can this computer be upgraded by an ssd drive or whatever they are called ! would I notice the difference? I dont play any games just use my computer for general internet use , letter writing etc
I dont really want to buy another mac!
well if upgrade yor ram to 8gb or 16gb if you can support that much on your mother borad
or you could get all your inportent files and copy them to a hard drive and format your mac
or maybe its time to upgrade macs
a ssd would help in start up and copying files and it would load programs quicker and the ram would help you alot since you got mavericks uses about 2gb of ram so 8gb would improve your performance

I'm not sure if it works with DVI but your late 2009 must be a 27". Try Command-F2 or Copmmand-Fn-F2

I am assuming that your backup is the one provided by Time Machine to an external USB HDD that is attached to an AirPort Extreme base station. If that is the case, then yes, you can restore your data from this Time Machine backup. The easiest way to do so is to use OS X's Migration Assistant, and then, choose the Time Machine option.

I've now installed the ad blocker, thrown away the unwanted files, and thrown away a copy of Firefox that Adware said had a problematic extension.
Things are better, but still slow.
Activity Monitor shows that with just Mail, Chrome and Excel running, 2.9GB of my 4GB RAM is used. Opening InDesign (always slow) increase that to 3.2GB. But the graph stays green.
Console shows several potential problems but I don't know if any are significant. In any case I will call my Mac store tomorrow to ask their advice about RAM.

Running a mid 2009 iMac on 10.7.5, 3 gb memory, 320 gb hd.
Suddenly the computer stoped reading DVDs and the only time I can read a CD is if I restart. Quite often when I insert a CD it gets stuck and I cannot get it out until I restart and it shows up on the desktop where I can then eject it.
I have checked and double checked the finder prefs and all looks normal showing a check mark on CDs,DVDs etc. (the ones I want to show up on the desktop)
I have reset the PEAM, repaired permissions with both the disk utility on the computer and the disk utility when I start up in the Recovery Disk. I did notice that sometimes the permission repeat the same correction several times before it moves on, and sometimes it doesn’t. I have Windows installed on a partition but I keep it unmounted until it is needed for my wife’s work. The dock seems to be just fine and all the apps seems to run just fine. When I insert a photo CD iPhoto does not open but when I insert a music CD iTunes does open.
Also, most every time I open iPhoto it takes a long time(sometimes as long as 2 minutes) for it to load.
Sometimes my Mail (Mail 5.3) does not post new mail but most of the time it does.
Once and a while it seems like the computer slows way down but then it seems ok ten minutes later.
All of these ‘things’ seemed to have happen suddenly and I have not downloaded anything from the internet in some time.
Of course the warranty and extended warranty are both no longer in effect having had this computer for more than three years.
I am running Java and Adobe Player because some of the sites I go to a lot require both.I believe that insufficient RAM may be the source of some of your problems. If you have a RAM of somewhere 4 to 8GB, you will experience smoother computing. 3GB doesn't seem right, so you might want to learn more by going to this site:

I don't know what know what's happening with your optical drive, but it seems you use your drive quite a bit. In that case, look into a lens cleaner for your machine. It's inexpensive, works quite well.

ColIf your computer with an internal optical drive you must use that to install Windows in a Boot Camp partition.

You do have Firewire 800 and it seems plenty fast for most use. Easy to install and the cradles allow for multiple disks swapping or daisey chain for multiple cradles.

Depends on the original drive. According to OWC, at least last time I checked some months ago, any current WD drive they sell (up to 2 TB?) will be able to be swapped directly. I am unable to confirm this personally. But, even so, that was a while back. You should check with them again on this. As for Seagates, that might not be so simple.

I wanted Windows on my 2009 Imac. I am running 10.6.8. I partitioned the drive so that 250 gigs was for windows and 250 was for Macintosh. I would like to undo this partition without losing anything from my macintosh side. Everything that is on the windows half can go away. Is this possible?
Well, you're bagged, sort of.
As Neil suggests, back up your current drive BEFORE you do anything.
I'm assuming that all your stuff on the Mac side is in folders, and easy for you to see and know what's what. This is important, as AFTER you back up your current, partitioned hard drive, you're going to open up Disk Utility and erase it...completely and totally...and then use your supplied discs to re-install the OS.
There's no way re-partition a drive without first erasing the entire thing. -
Can I run Photoshop CS6 Extended on an early 2009 iMac?
I'm running my early 2009 24" iMac on OS X Lion 10.7.5. It has a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 8 GB RAM, which all fit the requirements specified by Adobe. The display uses NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512MB. Adobe lists an "OpenGL 2.0-capable system" as a requirement, but I can't tell if this iMac's GPU qualifies. Does anyone have experience running PS CS6 on a similarly configured machine?
You can install directly - you can actually no longer download Mavericks anyway. Make sure you have sufficient RAM (at least 4GB) and hard drive space.
You won't be able to run some older software like Office 2004 so check third-party applications before you upgrade. And make sure you have a backup, preferably using Time Machine.
