Can I insert an article that is a .pdf file into an iBook?

I am trying to insert an article into an iBook but I cannot see any option in the Help topics for adding a .pdf file. Do I treat it as an "image"?

I have found that Author treats a pdf as an image. When i have multiple pages in a pdf or want it to be searchable, I make a Keynote of the text and then add an HTML Keynote

I know it will not get you a single page .PDF but if the program works you could get a .Doc of which you might have the possibility to save a single page after editing it !(?)

the best is to insert screenshot directly in keynote. If it's for a paper version save everything as pdf and compile with "combine pdf".

That is a function of the recipient's e-mail software understanding what your software sent. If it doesn't it will always show as an icon or attachment. It is also a function of both your internet provider and their internet provider accepting messages of that size, and a function of their download attachment settings in their e-mail program. There is no way to guarantee it will appear inline in the attachment. The best you can do is attach with Windows Friendly format. To do that, use the attach toolbar icon that looks like a paperclip, (View menu -> Customize toolbar if invisible) on Mac OS X Mail when composing the message. A checkbox appears in the file dialog box's bottom to make it Windows friendly when you navigate to pick the PDF file. That makes it as universally compatible as possible. It still may not appear inline, but at least you are less likely to be incompatible.

Inserting pdf file into database

I am trying to insert a adobe pdf file into a multimedia field in my database and while I can get it to cut and past I would like it to auto size into the box that I have defined for it. I have many records to compile, thousands. Some of these pdf files have several pages and it would be nice to be able to scroll through thier content in that multimedia field box. How do I do this? Is it possible? If not I assume I am stuck with making a link that opens the file. I assume this is possible. How do I do this?

You may enter the Layout > Layout mode to enlarge the area dedicated to the multimedia field.
But there is no provision for an autosize feature.
The link soluce is not available in databases.
I mimic it true the "enhanced database" structure requiring an AppleScript.
You may find the script on my temp iDisk or in the Peggy's one which is organised well.

Yes, this would be an input component of our workflow.
Right now the conversions are handled manually, usually through the use of Illustrator, mostly because the incoming pdf's have not been uniform or included several graphic components that needed to be controlled separately, or were "sloppy". Recently however, a situation has developed where a 3rd party is providing discrete, uniform pdf files for multiple clients that we will need to input efficiently into our system.
What I envision after your response of the impossibility of wrapping a PDF inside a PostScript stream is as follows:
- Normally, 100's of pdf's arriving from the 3rd party would be dropped into a "hot" folder for batch processing.
- A client "key" would trigger the hot folder application to act on the pdf's, prepending the client key to each file name.
- Batch processing would then accomplish the pdf to eps conversion.
- The eps files would be scanned for indexing data such as color information and bounding box, and, if necessary, color remapping could be done here too.
- The eps files would then be moved to our eps library and the indexing data would be added to the eps library database.
The only thing we aren't doing right now is the automated prepending of the client "key" and the pdf to eps conversion. At least in the short term I plan to see about the viability of converting the pdf's to eps using a batch action in Illustrator. I know I can write the "key" prepending code, as well as the eps parsing/color editing code.

When you insert pages, you can determine whether they go before or after the first or last page, or a page number that you specify.
If you're inserting multiple files at once, they will all be inserted in the same spot that you specify in the Select File to Insert dialog box.
There may be a way to handle this programmatically, and there are some very clever folks who visit these forums regularly. Let's see if they chime in...

Insert pdf file into another pdf file keeps getting stuck

I am trying to insert a 5 page pdf file into another pdf file (both unsecured) and it keeps getting stuck at about 71%* conplete. I can't even get the file to show up on the screen so i can close it. Help?

I have tried several different files, and get the same phenomenon with each one –
1.     I open an acrobat file.
2.     I open a WORD file.
3.     I copy a sentence from WORD to the clipboard.
4.     I click on View in Acrobat, Tools, Pages, other options, insert from clipboard.
5.     Acrobat shows that it is copying, and when it gets to 67% it stops and runs and runs and then only way I can stop it is to go to the task manager and end task.
I tried refrying with a file and that didn’t work, and I can’t imagine that Acrobat was designed so that each time I try to insert from WORD I would have to refry (even if it did work).
Please help!

You can link to a webpage or an email in Numbers-- that's it.
The best way I found to do this is to enable websharing on your machine (see this article if you are running 10.8: http://lowendmac.com/crews/12lc/web-sharing-mountain-lion.html)
You can then place your pdf files in the folder /Users/<your user name>/Sites/<somefolder>
Then link to this using the url "<your machine name>.local/~<your user name>/<somefolder>/<pdf Name>
My machines name is "Proton" (you can get this from the System Preferences > Sharing pane)
My user name is "wayne"
so I stored a pdf file (DM00027543.pdf) in the folder "/User/wayne/Sites/PDFTest"

It sounds like you may be experiencing issues on your non iOS 8 devices because iOS 8 is required to set up or join a Family Sharing group.

I have a PDF with some form fields in it. I want to selectively flatten a few form fields in the PDF using a java API. I have checked the documentation and found a method transformPDF in the OutputServiceService. But this method flattens all the form fields in the PDF document.
Can we selectively flatten form fields in a PDF file? If yes how?
This was possible in Adobe Document Server V6.

You will need an event in the form that will indicate that you want the flattening done. Once you determine what that is it is simply a single statement for each field:
fieldname.access = "readOnly";
Now when the form is rendered, the user will not be able to get access to these fields.

The problem is defining what it even means to “embed” a PDF file in the body of an e-mail, especially if you are dealing with a multiple page PDF file.
E-mail is either pure text, rich text (something akin to RTF in Word), or HTML. PDF is not compatible with any of these. Thus, to embed a PDF file, something has to be converted and that means the PDF would be converted to a less graphically rich raster format. But is that what you would really want?
I think that the MacOS and iOS e-mail clients do under some circumstances place an attached PDF file within HTML segments and by clicking on same, you get the equivalent of extracting the full PDF file, but I have no real experience with that.
Another alternative is HTML with a proxy image with a hyperlink to an external PDF file that is invoked when you click on the hyperlink.
Perhaps you can explain what you are really trying to accomplish and what the recipient of such an e-mail's actual experience would be?
