Can I insert HDD 160GB in Satellite U200-181

Dear Friends!
Whether I can insert HDD 160 Gb in laptop Toshiba U200-181?
Version BIOS 3.40
Thanks!

Hi
Hmmm, the snipe's comment is not 100% right.
If the HDD size is not supported the BIOS will not recognize the HDD!!!
I think you could use an HD up to 120GB but I'm not sure about the bigger sizes.
You should really test it before you will purchase one.

  • Satellite U200-181 Built-in HDD ERROR

I've bought "Toshiba Satellite U200-181" 2 weeks ago. Recently (2-3 days ago) Ive got problem with built-in HDD.
So the problem is that sometimes I'm getting the message "Built-in HDD ERROR" during Notebook startup. This message "Built-in HDD ERROR" appears from time to time and system stops booting from HDD, but can boot from other bootable devices. First time when message "Built-in HDD ERROR" occurred, it was accompanied by lot of strange clapper pop noise from inside of the Notebook. All other
"Built-in HDD ERROR" messages were accompanied with not so loud and strange clapper pop noise, but still with some pop sounds (not as loud as at first time).
To identify possible problems I saved S.M.A.R.T. data log (see appendix#1).
Additional information: After I've purchased the Notebook Ive made successful BIOS upgrade from version 1.40 to version 1.50 strictly according Toshiba official web-site instructions. After BIOS upgrade system worked well, no ERRORS, no faults. But 3days ago I got "Built-in HDD ERROR" message.
    Any ideas? Thank you.

I recommend you to contact Toshiba service partner in your country as soon as possible. The unit is new one and something like this should not happen. Explain them the situation and you will see what they can do about it.
You can also contact your local dealer and try to exchange the unit to new one.

  • How can I see the quantity of battery cycles on Satellite U200-181?

I have Satellite U200-181, and I use it hard, every. I want to be ready replace my battery, when it will have 400 cycles.
How can I see the quantity of battery cycles on my laptop?

You must not see this. You will see that capacity of the battery drops down and will be empty after short time. Nobody say that you will be able to use battery 400 cycles only. Maybe you will be lucky and the battery will have longer life time.
My Tecra M1 is about 4 years old and still working with original battery.
Your question is pretty unusual and I am really interested about further comments.

  • How to reset password on Satellite U200-181?

    Greetings!
    Sorry for my English.
I have notebook Toshiba Satellite U200-181 and all documents from it (check, warranty).
When the computer starts, it demands to enter the BIOS password... I called in the service center in Russia, but they told me then they have not any Response Codes
I have PC Serial No. and Challenge Code... What I need doing now? I dont want pay about 70$ for reset password... please help :)
    Best Regards, Sergey

    Hello Sergey
Please do not be mad on me but you do not understand how it works. To reset BIOS password Toshiba control center needs code given by your notebook model. After short time they send one new code back and after entering this code the BIOS password will be deleted.
Just authorized service provider in your country can contact Toshiba control center and just service will get the information back. With short words: private person like you have no chance to delete BIOS password. I hope you understand it why. If not let me know I will explain you.
Sorry but you must contact service.

  • Satellite U200-181. Slow touchpad under Linux

I use two operating systems on my Toshiba Satellite U200-181.
They are: MS Windows XP Home, and Debian GNU Linux Etch (stable).
In MS Windows XP all the touchpad 's functions work fine, but there are some troubles under Linux:
    - cursor is moving very slowly when I am moving my finger over touchpad surface. Changind pointer speed acceleration in mouse preference dialog does nothing (I use Gnome 2 desktop environment).
    - tapping on the touchpad surface does not emulate left button pressing as it does in MS Windows.
Can anybody help me to configure touchpad so that it works in Linux as it does in MS Windows.
    Thank you, Mikhail.

Well you should use this app
    http://qsynaptics.sourceforge.net/
Also touchpad and mouse movement can be adjusted by adjusting /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (but be carefull allways create backup).
Try to type something like this

    Identifier "Alps Touchpad"
    Driver "synaptics"

  • Satellite U200-181: How can I check if Trusted Platform Module is present

How can I check Trusted Platform module is present or not?

    Hi
The configuration of TPM (trusted platform module) is carried out in the BIOS setup program and this function is provided only with some models.
I dont know if the U200-181 supports this or not but you can check it yourself.
The security controller settings should be available in BIOS system Setup on the second site.
If the unit supports the TPM you should see the switch to enable or disable this security option. Usually as per default the TPM is disabled.

  • Satellite U200-181 - How to add extra RAM?

    Hi
I've enjoyed my U200-181 very much, but would like to have some extra RAM in addition to 512 Mb installed by default. How can I do that?
How many SO-DIMM slots available? Are there any disassembly instructions?
    Thanks in advance

changing the memory is very easy.
    1. pull off the black strip above the keyboard (it just snaps in place)
    2. remove the 2 screws
    3. pivot keyboard forward being careful not to damage keyboard cable
    4. remove 2 screws on big metal plate on the right.
    5. remove plate to expose 2 x ddr2 200 pin sodimm slots.

  • Satellite U200-181 - compatibile DVD-ROMs

    Hello
I have a question regarding compatibile DVD drives for Tohsiba U200-181.
I looked through this forum and found info that only UJDA765 and UJ-842
are compatibile with my laptop. I originaly had UJ-842 and tried to replace
it with UJDA765 but with no luck. CD ROM error during startup.
Many beay seller advertise other models e.g. UJ-832, UJ-862 as compatibile for this model too.
So i tried using UJ-862 removed from Toshiba U300 also with no luck.
I would appreciate any info on acceptable models or ways of
installing any of the new like UJ-862.
    Thanks in advance

I guess the usage of other CD/DVD drives would not be possible because of compatibility problems. Even if other optical disk drives would fit in the ODD bay, the BIOS would not recognize it correctly.
But I think the info about compatible drive in user manual refers only to the optical disk drives which were provided with the different U200 models.
So possibly other ODDs could be compatible but this can be just tested at your own hand

  • Can't restore HDD on my Satellite L650-18M

Satellite L650 frozen at boot up. despite mc fee, a virus has stopped boot up. Stops at flashing cursor top left. can boot from recovery cd. BUT restore / recovery wont complete to any selected restore point though it goes through all the motions and then says at end, cant complete with error.
No toshiba hdd recovery option (ie to factory settings) is available in recovery console, or with recovery disk.
D Drive has all the recovery data ok as I can move aroud from c> prompt in dos to alldrives/ areas. Dont have own burned recovery disks. This happened quick .
NOW installed win 7 (64bit) in frustration from 'a' disk, works but all installed s/wareand toshiba drivers now useless . Bottom line, is there a patch to install or a work around that will allow access to reset to the factory settings with the data stored on disk/drive D. Normal methods of starting this process are not available

Can you please tell us which error was shown at the end of recovery installation?
Anyway, now after OS installation with non-Toshiba disc there is no way to start HDD recovery installation again and recovery image can be installed with Toshiba recovery DVD only.
    > NOW installed win 7 (64bit) in frustration from 'a' disk, works but all installed s/wareand toshiba drivers now useless
To be honest your posting is a little bit confusing and I dont understand what you want to say with this sentence. If you have installed clean OS you must install all drivers and Toshiba stuff additionally. All of them are available on Toshiba download page.
If you have more questions please be clear and ask one by one so it will be easier to give answer to each of them.

    is any solutions for this?

    Hi
The BSOD error can be caused by serious software issue or hardware problem.
In your case its not easy to say what causes this BSOD.
When did you notice this BSOD error? Did it appear from first time?
Did you install any 3rd applications which could be a reason for such issue?
    I mean software compatibility problems.
Last but not least a BSOD can be caused by faulty RAM module.
I had a similar issue and finally Ive found out that one of my modules malfunctioned.

  • Satellite U200-181 - Sound is not playing after Vista Ultimate upgrade

I have restore Win XP from Recovery Disk and upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate. After reinstalling sound drivers (which installed correctly) i have no sound in my system. All volumes maximal and not mute. It seems like program sound off (by sound jogdial pressing). But all volumes at right level and not mute.

    Hi buddy,
I have an idea which might help you:
Go to www.realtek.com download the drivers there, uninstall the drivers from the Toshiba website and install the drivers which youve downloaded from the realtek website.
Regardless if its working or not, give a short reply. Would appreciate it. :)

  • Satellite U200-115 - CD Rom error - can't activate the drive from windows

    Hi everyone,
I'm having some problems with my DVD rewriter drive on my Satellite U200-115.
It works very intermittently and whenever I power up the machine, the first notice I get is 'cd-rom error' even though there is no disc in the drive.
I can't activate the drive from windows either (icon in system tray).
There is the odd occassion when the drive does work in windows but this is so infrequent that I can't remember the last time (I think it was back in Nov 08).
I want to restore the system as I am getting a lot of windows file icons instead of the proper icons for images e.g. pdf, doc, etc. but am worried that the drive wont read the disc or will stop working during the recovery process.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
    Best WIshes
    Nick

If its a software issue the drive will not stop working during the recovery procedure.
Do you get a CD-ROM error in Windows?
You could try to boot from a Linux boot disk. If this work it would be a software problem and not a hardware problem.
Maybe this article from the Microsoft Knowledge Base can help you:

  • Satellite A300-1G5 - Can I change HDD place?

    Hi everyone;
I have this laptop : [Toshiba Satallite A300 - 1G5|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=EU&com.broadvis ion.session.new=Yes&PRODUCT_ID=1055589] . it has the standard specification no upgrades.
I was thinking if it possible to move the HDD from its place (which on the left side of the laptop) to the right side of the laptop, since my model can have 2 separate HDD. This idea came to my mind because of the fact that the CPU ( cooling module ) is actually is on the left side as well as HDD. As everybody knows , CPU generate the most heat of the laptop, so I was thinking I can reduce heat by moving the HDD to right side (where its only contain the DVD drive). A matter of fact, the left side of the laptop is always hotter than the right side.
So, is there any body agree on that? Will the HDD fit on the right side ? If so, can u people help me on how I can move the HDD to the right side?
    thanks in advance ..

    Hi
Theoretically you can exchange the HDD and you can put in into the second HDD slot. It makes no difference if the computer boots from SATA1 port or SATA2 port.
But the interesting thing is that my girlfriend has Satellite A300 too but with 2 HDDs. Now I have looked into both HDD slots and the point is that the HDD chassis to fix it in the notebook (silver chassis) are different. That means you need the HDD chassis for the second slot.
You can get if from an authorized service provider.
Furthermore if your notebook is getting hot you should clean it. I do it every 3 months and always Im wondering how much dust come out.
I hope I could help you a little bit.

  • Can I install a 2nd HDD in my Satellite P200-10C?

    Hi
I have a Satellite P200-10C which I want to upgrade with a 2nd HDD. I called a Toshiba representative who told me my model doesn't support an other HDD. But then again, why does it have a place in the back of the laptop for a 2nd one?
Could some one tell me if it can be used to accommodate a 2nd HDD.
    Thanks in advance
    Gerardo

    @Jayjay
I finally decided to open the compartment for the 2nd HDD of my Satellite P200-10C. I discovered there the modem (I think) and enough space to accommodate a HDD but alas! No connector for the HDD. I think that settled the matter. I can not have a 2nd HDD. Unless of course someone in the future find a way to attach a connector.
    Thanks for your answer, Jajay

  • What Toshiba SSD can be used for Satellite U200

Please could you recommend me a *Toshiba* SSD for my satellite U200 notebook.
It should have 120 or 128 GB.
Would it include a migration tool (e.g. Acronis) to copy my HDD (80 GB) to a new SSD?
    Thank you!

I assume most of SSD drives which would support the SATA controller/interface would be compatible and should work in connection with this U200 series.
But you will not get the full SSD drive performance since most SSD drives are faster than the speed supported my HDD controller.
I guess the unit supports common SATA I (150MB/s) controller. The SSD drive supports mostly SATA II (300MB/s) or SATA III. But SATA is down compatible. Therefore you should be able to use also SATAII/III SSD drives
