Hi! I'm fairly new to video editing. Can someone tell me if it is possible to edit a video using Final Cur Pro X to include whatever images I want as the background to a person singing in a video clip? If so, how? Thanks!

btw: green-screen is drop-dead-simple in FCPX, for a school project we're using the worst green screen ever (un-even, shrinkles, bad/no lighting, diff. greens etc) - and it's working like marvel!

Yes. But how you do it depends on your version of quicktime.
If you have the pro version, you can easily use the "Export" option to output the video as a series of images.
For the basic version of quicktime, or if you want to quickly take make a still image of a single frame, you could just use the "Grab" application in OSX to take a screen shot.

I'll assume you want to create a still to use outside FCPX, not a still frame within FCPX. It's kinda hidden in the "share." Go File/Share/Add Destination. You want "Save Current Frame." After you've created that destination, it'll be there for you in the future under Share.

I checked my system to make sure it meets all the requirements for the software, no problem there. When I "share" the project and save it as an MPEG, the images show up in WMP just fine. But I need to be able to see what I'm doing to the stills while I am editing. Help!

You need to either create an Alpha channel or cut out the area of interest and paste it into a transparent Photoshop document. You can save the former as PSD, TIFF or PNG. Save the latter as TIFF with transparency enabled (shows up in TIFF Options at step 2 of the save dialog).

I am working on a slide show for a memorial service and would like to have one still image showing and then have the next one come in without replacing the former- somehow merge the two. Is that possible?

Depending on what you mean by "merge," you can use PiP (Picture in Picture) to have the second image come in and occupy part of the screen with the original image. There are many ways to display PiP, from say a small image located in the screen to having it occupy one half of the screen.
Does that sound like what you are hoping to do?
Besides the rather simple PiP, one can also use Track Matte Keying to bring up the second image and to soften edges, drop it into an image of, say a TV set, or a window.
The possibilities are endless, or nearly so.
Let us know if PiP works for you, or if you need a more intricate merging of the images.

Trouble Inserting Titles & Still Images

I've ground through FAQ, etc. and maybe I'm not searching for the right terms - so any help is appreciated.
Here's my situation:
* I've been working with a PP (CC) project cutting a long video into pieces, re-ordering, etc. All was well;
* I started to dork around with AE, but got called to another project - so I think I did not save/keep the AE work;
* When I opened my PP project again I cannot:
** Insert (add to sequence) title slides I made in PP;
** "same" for a PSD I imported from Photoshop;
** Cannot drag new Adjustment Layers, Color Mattes, etc. onto the sequence after creating them
* But I can:
** Add more video clips
** Move titles, etc. around
** Execute the standard drag and drop video work
** Take (for instance) an Adjustment Layer and make it a new sequence - then the new "Adjustment Layer" sequence will fit right in
I don't understand why my sequence is only accepting other sequences. 93% chance of pilot error on this one - but I have pushed every button I could try!
I then opened a new project and everything worked as expected - so I don't think it's a SW issue - something is gumming up the project.
Any help is very appreciated.
Barring a "fix" I tried to open a new project and import the "old video" which caused the same issues -

Mark - great questions, sorry for not thinking about them when I posted.
When I drag from my "project panel" (lower left) to sequence I get the "grabby hand" with the slashed circle [sorry I don't know the actual terms].
When I "open in source monitor" then try to drag the icon appears.
When I "open in source monitor" then use the "Insert" (",") command something different happens - it opens a "gap" in the sequence, but doesn't insert anything - and I've zoomed in as far as my + key allows.
Now - here's where I may be clueless - just noticed then when I made V3 track active and hit "insert" it opened a gap in V1 and V2 as well - I assume it's because I have the Toggle Sync Lock activated.
Also - when I create a new sequence within the same project - everything works as expected.
Is there something within a sequence that would cause this?
Thanks for any ideas - I'm baffled, but very new to Premeier Pro.

Putting a still image on top of a movie clip

Alright, let me explain my scenario. I have a scene in my movie where I want to put someone else's head on top of another persons body (it's not *****). Basically, I want to know if you can put a still image on top of a moving picture. I know this is borderline flash animation, but I want to know if it can be done in Final Cut Express 4.

Yes, it is possible.
If the person's body is moving, it is not easy to make his new head on top move smoothly. So a satisfactory result may be hard to reach, but it all depends on what you are expecting to get.
In any case you have to add the new still with the head in the timeline on top of the video, and apply the Basic Motion keyframes to its Scale, Center and/or Rotation controls. Add as many keyframes as you can manage (possibly even one every 5-10 frames) to make the still (head) follow the underlying body smoothly. Note that at 3 keyframes per second (a keyframe every 10 frames with NTSC) you need 30 keyframes in 10 seconds of movie... if you accept a jerkier result you can lower the keyframe number, but it really all depends on the body movement in the movie, and the precision you need.
You might need also to prepare the still by removing all its background, in order to have only a head in it, before importing the still to FCE. For this you could first use Photoshop (Elements) to remove the background, save as .tif with transparency, and finally import to FCE.

I want to crop and resize my images before bringing them in to PE10 on my iMac running lion. What pixel dimensions are best? The preview of my first image in the playback viewer is terrible. I used 1920 wide by 1080 high in my export settings for the image editer (Lightroom).

I Scale and Crop all of my Still Images in Photoshop (PSElements works well too), to exactly the pixel x pixel dimensions of my Project's Frame Size. If one needs to Pan on a Zoomed Out Still Image, then I would calculate the Pan, and Scale/Crop to that size. You do not want to have overly-large Still Images. This ARTICLE goes into much more detail, and will show how to Automate to>Batch with Actions in PS/PSE.

Create a still image for a minute within video

Is it possible to havet he final frame of a clip stay 'on' for a minute - and then proceed to the next sequence? I'm not sure freeze frame is the accurate term - obviously I'm very new - this is my first project. The video will be a total of 6 minutes. After 2 minutes, I need to have a still image for 1 minute before proceeding to remainder of video. If this is possible, any help re how? Thanx

That's correct. The nested sequence essentially functions as one clip, so you can edit it, transform it, add effects or transitions, or do any other operation that you'd do on a single clip unit. For example, if you need to move your series of photos somewhere else in your sequence, you'd have to select all of them; if they're nested, you just have to click one big target to move them.
I think Craig (shooternz) misunderstood your question, and assumed you just wanted to fade up the first photo, but you're talking about fading up over a longer duration, and multiple images. He had the right answer to a different question

How can i set each still image to show for 1 frame?

im trying to create a 60fps timelapse but i just can't get each image to show for less than 2 frames, i've gone to edit>preferences>import and set the still footage length to 0:00:00:01. and i've set the sequence footage to 60fps(although i'm not positive what this does)
i then bring my photos down to create new composition set it to 0:00:00:01 still duration and then each photo shows for 2 frames, any ideas?

If you import a single frame as an image sequence it will be 2 frames long.
If you import an image sequence as an image sequence you won't be able to see the individual frames in the timeline as being 2 frames long. However, if your composition is set to 60 fps and the image sequence is interpreted as 30 fps, when you step through the footage there will be pairs of identical frames. Change the interpretation to 60 fps and the image sequence will be half as long but each frame will be unique.

But I have a follow up question. So if I use Edit Mask so that I can only see a portion of the image, when I tap the image, I only enlarge the visible portion. In fact, it isn't even enlarged: I only see the same portion of the image at the same size. This is not the behaviour you get with the gallery widget. Is that also your experience, or am I missing something?
In thinking about it, I can probably make do with the gallery widget in the cases where I would like this behaviour, but it seems like this should work.
