Can I install a SATA drive in Mirror Drive Door G4?

I am looking at a Seagate 500 GB SATA drive at a great price at MWave ($109.) but see that SATA may require a different cable connector from the IDEs that I normally use in my box. Can I buy some kind of adaptor cable, or do I have to get a card of some kind. Where and how much?
Or, could I install the SATA (it's a ST3500630AS) in an external enclosure that fits ATA 133 3.5 hard drives?
Thanks,
k

Hi
You'd need a Mac compatible PCI card containing a SATA controller. The FirmTek SeriTek 1S2 or Sonnet Tempo is a popular two port choice (they're effectively the same card) and are available for around $70.
The Sonnet Tempo at least comes with a single SATA data cable, and a single power converter cable that allows you to use a legacy molex power connector (as found in the G4s) to power a SATA drive. Some SATA drives come with both power connectors anyway, hence the converter cable isn't required, but I don't think the Seagates do.
I use SATA drives in my G4 as they're marginally faster, the cabling is generally easier and more importantly they can also be moved to newer Macs in the future which support SATA drives natively. For me the extra cost of a SATA card was worthwhile.

SATA cards are also available from ACARD and SIIG etc.

How many IDE drives & CDrom can be installed with SATA drives??
i have 2 IDE hard disks & 2 CDROM drives: can install SATA hard disk added to these drives or do i have to remove some???
& if it can be added, can i install 2 SATA drives???
    THX in advance

The 3 versions of this board that are available are:
    875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0)
    875P Neo-LSR (PCB 1.0)
    875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0)
All of these boards will have the following ports provider by the chipsets ICH5R south bridge.
2 x SATA (Supporting 2 SATA HDD drives)
    2 x PATA (Supporting 4 IDE devices)
All 6 of these can be used at the same time (provided you are using win XP or 2K) you just need to make sure yor BIOS is set right.
    ->INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS
    ->ON-CHIP IDE CONFIG
ATA CONFIG: S-ATA ONLY or P-ATA ONLY
    S-ATA/P-ATA KEEP ENABLED: YES
    OPERATE MODE:
If you set to "legacy mode" S-ATA are set to channel 1 and 2 and P-ATA to channel 3 and 4. If you set to "native mode" P-ATA are channel 1 and 2 and S-ATA 3 and 4. You can only use the raid functionfon SATA in native mode.
If you have the 875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0) you will also have the following ports provided by the Promise PDC20378 PCI controller:
2 x SATA (Supporting 2 SATA HDD drives)
1 x PATA (Supporting 1 Master IDE HDD drive)
The PATA port is limited to 1 Master HDD by the lite BIOS. This can in theory be upgraded to the full BIOS supporting a master and a slave, but this may obviously void your warranty.
So the answer to your origional question is:
    2 x SATA HDDs and 4 x IDE HDD/CDROM if you have 875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0) or 875P Neo-LSR (PCB 1.0)
    or
    4 x SATA HDDs, 1 x IDE HDD (2 if you modify the BIOS) and 4 x IDE HDD/CDROM if you have 875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0)

  • Mac Pro will not sleep properly after installing new SATA BD-CD-DVD drive.

Hello and thank you in advance for time reading this.
I have been using a Mac Pro for 4 years and it never happened to me before.
This started almost immediately after installing a new SATA BD-CD-DVD Drive.
When the Mac is ordered to sleep, It shuts down 3 out of 4 Hard Drives
(I guess the one that doesn't is the OSX Drive) and It will not shut down the fans
and the display has no signal.
During that (when it won't sleep completely) the Mac is completely paralysed and it's unable to wake up.
Now, I've tried being patient and giving the Mac a ton of time to sleep.
In some cases it actually worked and the Mac did sleep completely and it was able to wake up,
but that defeats the purpose (being able to sleep and wake up in an in a few seconds).
In these few cases, the Mac took about 30 min to sleep.
In the rest of the cases the Mac never slept and I had to emergency shut it off from the power button.
In simply words, Mac falls into a "coma", not asleep but not awake at the same time.
As I said, this started exactly when I installed an SATA LG CH10LS20 optical Drive.
You may say that the Mac Pro does not support SATA for optical Drives.
This is why you should know that there is a SATA port on the motherboard of a Mac,
and with the correct method you can connect a SATA Drive AND be able to use it with out additional drivers.
    http://www.tomorrowland.com/guides/mac-pro-optical-drive-install-part-1/
Now, you may say that If I'm so sure that it's the new drive causing the problem, why don't I disconnect it?
Well, please try to understand me, it's an all new drive and it cost a good load of money...
and other users of the same drive do not have that problem... yet...
Is there a way for the drive (which otherwise works fine) and the Mac to coexist and work properly?
Do you really think it's the new Drive?
Is the motherboard bothered somehow by the new drive and wont go to sleep properly?
Any kind of help is welcome and
I thank you in advance if you can help me.

Thanks for taking the time to respond RedBaron, I don't have a USB aircard in this system but I do have numerous firewire drives. I haven't unplugged everything yet and restarted. That's a good tip. I think I will try that to see if that is the problem.
    Thanks again

  • Can I install windows on a RAID hard drive?

    Hi,
I recently purchased a used macPro. This mac pro had a raid set so 4 1TB hard drives were created to make one 4 GB partition. This made the raid utility pop up frequently saying there was something wrong so I just broke the RAID set and tried to set the disk up as their on storage partitions (Just as if they were 4 normal hard drives. Now that I did this, only 3 out of the 4 hard drives are visible in disk utility. Also, I reinstalled macosx snow leopard and tried installing bootcamp but when I partition the hard drive and restart using the windows installation disk, it doesn't show that I have any available hard drives to install windows on. Is this because of my RAID disks? (Sorry I don't know anything about raid disks and didn't know this computer had it before I bought it)
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

As stated in the Mac Pro RAID card FAQ you can't install Windows if you have the drives controlled by that card.
Question: Why can't I install Boot Camp on my Mac Pro or Xserve that uses a RAID?
Answer: Boot Camp does not support the installation of Windows onto a Mac using hardware or software RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Drives). Boot Camp is not supported on the Xserve with or without the Xserve RAID Card installed.

Look inside and see if there is a RAID controller from Apple, proably top slot #4. Also look in System Profile under SATA interface.
Pull non-graphic card, seems you don't need it if you have one.
You are not getting something: internal hard drives are one thing. RAID card is another. The RAID card just replaces the normal SATA controller that otherwise interfaces.
Take a look at the photos and manual for the card.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

I do not know what you are waiting for.
I'd make a backup of your important stuff before cloning the entire disk.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. Its incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use, and SuperDuper's built-in scheduler makes it trivial to back up automatically. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs!

How can I install ntfs on an external hard drive so that my Samsung Smart TV can see my media files? Or is there a better option?

OS X cannot natively write to a drive formatted as NTFS, nor can it format a drive as NTFS. There are third-party NTFS drivers available on the market.
Just out of curiosity: Even with NTFS, how is your TV going to access the external hard drive? Does the TV have a USB port?

What, (if any) are the drawbacks to using "Parallels"?

Is it possible for Apple to allow users to program a key on their keyboard, when pressed will bring up Windows so they don't have to always restart? I need to switch between Windows and mac OS quite often and it's a real pain to always restart. What options do I have?

By Microsofts Design no Windows can be installed and booted from external HDs. BootCamp just follows this.
However, according to this http://tubeshards.wordpress.com/2006/12/05/install-windows-to-a-macintosh-usb-dr ive/ it can be done.

Parallels is an OS X application which don't need a restart of your Mac to run Windows.
Therefor you can run OS X and Parallels Windows side-by-side.
Main drawback is, that Windows runs not native (on the real hardware) but in a virtualized environment.
While this is more than acceptable for 'standard' Office programs, any program that needs direct hardware access (especially games and 3D-programs) either do not run at all or run at noticeable slower speed.
Also you have to realize that the amount of RAM in your Mac is divided between OS X and Parallels Windows.

BootCamp is no option then, since it needs a reboot everytime you want to switch between OS X and Windows.
Parallels (and VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox, BTW) run alongside OSX.
    Thanks
    You're welcome. Hope it helps.

Can i install wow on an external hard drive and play it off that, cause im runing out of space on my computer.

If you are going to install WoW to a external hard drive I suggest getting a eSATA external hard drive. There is a noticable drop in performance when trying to use a external USB drive to run games from.

  • How can i install a sata hard drive in my compaq nx6110

There is a rediculously small hard drive installe in my laptop 40gb. I want to install at least a 240 gb but only can find sata drives that size. How do I go about installing the sata drive.

You cannot install a SATA drive, and you can't go up to 240
because the BIOS is not "48 bit" compatible.
This limits you to 137 GB or less. There are plenty of 120 GB drives
on Ebay for pretty good prices; just search this phrase:
    "2.5 PATA 120"
    Good luck
