Can I install a Windows operating system on my Macbook pro

I have been using VMWare Fusion virtual machine to access the windows side of my computer, but I think it is very complicated. It seems to me at one time you could install Windows directly on the Mac. Because of the people I serve I still have need of both Windows apps and OS Lion. Any recommendations?

Virtualbox is one of the simpler programs to do so, plus it only costs the Windows license.  Same with Apple's Boot Camp, but it requires using the special Boot Camp partition creator which could result in data loss if you aren't careful.  See my user tip on the many various options available.

I want to install a third operating system on my macbook pro. I already have windows and i want install unix or linux in there. Is it possible??

Yes, it's possible, but if your Windows system is on a Boot Camp partition then you have to first remove it. Then create however many partitions you want for the operating systems. You have OS X on one, so you need two more - one for Windows and one for Linux. You then install Windows and Linux separately to their respective partitions. Download rEFIt
Use it as the replacement bootloader so you can properly boot from each OS properly.

  • I erased my HD and could not install lion. if I turn on the mac now all I see is a folder with a question-mark. How can I install a new operation system?

I erased my HD and could not install lion. if I turn on the mac now all I see is a folder with a question-mark. How can I install a new operation system?

Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

Can I install one 8 GB ram in a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011).  The other slot is not working, I have only one slot that works. It is stated in this link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270#link1 , that the maximum memory is 8 GB where every slot slot has 4 Gb.  Is there any problem if i install only one 8 Gb ram in the working slot ?

You should be able to do that.
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Understand that there is no guarantee it will work, but based on the above it should work for you.

From the Finder's Go menu, choose Computer:

    Jamesandmacbooks,
if by “free” you mean “gratis” (as opposed to, say, “open source”), then there’s only one version of OS X to date that’s gratis, namely Mavericks. You can only download Mavericks if you currently have Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later installed. If you’re still running Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.something) on your 2008 MacBook Pro, then you’ll need to first purchase the white retail Snow Leopard DVD, install it on your MacBook Pro, and run Software Update to get it to 10.6.8, after which you can download Mavericks gratis from the Mac App Store and install that. Be sure that your MacBook Pro meets all of Mavericks’ system requirements before trying to install it. If you currently run any PowerPC apps, note that they won’t be supported in any version of OS X after Snow Leopard.

  • Can I install a new operating system using a USB optical drive?

My Mac is out of date, I'm still running 10.5.8 but have the Snow Leopard disk to update my operating system to 10.6.3. However, my built-in optical drive is broken so I use a USB powered optical drive. So, when I start the process of installing the new operating software, will the MAC direct itself to my USB drive to boot when necessary?

Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify, because I'm on 10.5.8 I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard using a dvd disk, which I have. I cannot upgrade to any other more recent operating system until I'm on Snow Leopard, so that's the first thing to do.
So, just to clarify further, I have a DVD drive that plugs into 2 USB ports that I use to burn and read DVDs, ever since the inbuilt DVD drive on my iMac started sticking disks inside.
So...I'm really looking for the best way to do this upgrade with what I have...I don't know whether the Mac will find the disk if it is on the plugged in portable DVD drive rather than the inbuilt DVD drive....
    Any advice greatly appreciated...

  • The current operating system on my MacBook Pro is 10.5.8.  I would like to upgrade it so I can use iCloud.  Which newer version of OS should I download?

Would like to use iCloud, but am currently using OS 10.5.8 with my MacBook Pro.  Which newer OS should  I download?

    Yes.
Get the Snow Leopard install DVD (Amazon etc...)
Use software update to get Snow Leopard 10.6.8
In Snow Leopard, you will have App Store application under the Applications folder
Launch the App Store app - it will use your Apple ID to set up purchases and payments
    Search for OS X Lion
Purchase Lion - it will download and install automatically over Snow Leopard
    NOTE 1:
Make sure you backup whatever is necessary. That should go without saying.
    NOTE 2:
Your Mac will likely be able to run Mountain LIon which is coming out in a couple of weeks.
I think, if you buy hte Lion now, you might be eligible for free upgrade to Mountain Lion.
If not, I'd hang on until ML is out, then buy it - that would be my preferred solution
Here is some info on upgrading and eligibility...

  • How do I reinstall the operating system on my MacBook Pro without using my apple id?

I'm selling my computer. Everything has been erased. Now the operating system, Lion, needs to be installed. I believe the computer did not come with a cd so reinstalling is done through wifi.

We bought it in January 2010. I'm not sure what OS it came with but when I look at the dates of each OS on wikipedia it looks like it came with Snow Leopard. The only disk I happen to have is Leopard.
Let's drop back a minute and go through what you can and cannot do with this machine.
    1.  If the machine came with Leopard, you can install Leopard and then go to Snow Leopard and up the line of the on-line Mac OS X versions, that is, Lion, and Mountain Lion and Mavericks as compatible.  If the disk for Leopard that you have is a grey face disk, that is a machine-specific disk and will only work if it is the disk that came with your MacBook Pro.  If it is a panted face (black) with a large silver X it is a retail version and will install IF your machine came with Leopard.
    2.  If your MacBook Pro came with Snow Leopard, it will not install Leopard.  If it came with Snow Leopard and is a 2010 machine, it will not install the retail version of Snow Leopard since that is 10.6.3 and the 2010 and later machines came with 10.6.6 preinstalled.  You must call Apple Customer Support and have them send you the machine-specific install disk for that machine.  There is a fee of something like $20 in the US for doing that.
    3.  If your machine came with Snow Leopard, you need to reinstall Snow Leopard and then move to the on-line Mac OS X versions, you cannot download a version with your Apple ID associated with the version currently on the machine.  The starting point HAS to be Snow Leopard for the new owner to do an on-line Mac OS X download.
    4.  With Snow Leopard installed and on-line software updated to 10.6.8, the new owner can then move up to Lion or above depending on the compatibility of the hardware.  To move to Lion or above the machine must have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.  To move to Mountain Lion or Mavericks the machine must meet the requirements in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842.
At any rate, the new owner must install Snow Leopard on that machine before any move to one of the Mac App Store versions of Mac OS X.

  • Has anyone successfully installed OSX, Windows 7 and Linux on macbook pro 8, 2

I just want to know before I take a shot at this, if there are any success storys of this or similar model macbook pro
also i want to do this while having a shared partition for music movies and pics to share between the 3 os's
also i would prefer all efi, but understand that i will most likely have to at least have windows in bios mode
so please post your fails and successes as this may help me
idk if any tianocore bootduet works on macbook pro either if anyone knows more about that please post
and i will post my results and attempts
also the linux i will use will most likely be ubuntu
one more thing, when i first got this macbook, the superdrive wasnt recognised in ubuntu so it would boot, then fail while trying to load the files
so i tried many things, couldnt get even cd combined with usb to work, so i waited, now with the recent release of 12.04 LTS, ubuntu will boot just fine on my macbook so i know it can now be done

No problem installing on my windows 7 x64 systems.  Try uninstall AIR seperateley and then reinstalling it.  Then reinstall IB.  Note the more recent help systems also run Air so you can test that as well.
I believe this is the url for air (or try off the adobe home page)
    http://www.adobe.com/go/EN_US-H-GET-AIR
you need to make sure you get the most recent as IB and AIR are more current then the ELEMents installs.
    Don't uninstall elements.

  • HT1338 attempting to update operating system software on Macbook Pro with OSX 10.4.11 what is the cost and how

attempting to update operating system on macbook pro with osx10.4.11.
how is this accomplished and what is the cost ? is the worth the expense give the age of unit?

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is once again available from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
