Can I Install an msata SSD in Envy 14-2010TX (QB422PA)

I have an Envy 14-2010TX Beats Edition (Model QB422PA#AB5).
As the current WD 750GB HDD is quite slow, I was planning on installing a msata (say 80GB) and using Intel Smart Response Technology to provide SSD caching on the larger HDD.
I need the capacity so can't really just swap out the HDD for a SDD (even a 512GB SSD is not enough)
Having taken the HDD out and looked, it appears the system has an msata port under the existing 750GB HDD, but I cannot tell if it's electrically active (I can see the female socket and screw holes as if it's ready for an msata card to plug in).
First, I need to know if this is possible from a hardware perspective (e.g.. is the msata port active, will it be recognised if ssd installed), and secondly, I do not see any related (e.g.. RAID, etc.) entries in the BIOS so how would this be set up?
Could anyone please help with this, possibly through your own experience, of from a HP technicians perspective?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

The Service Manual is no help whatsoever. It says an M.2 mSSD is supported on "select models" but there is no picture of it in the Manual or indication where it is on the "Select Models". Those that do have it use an M.2 version (three connector prongs not 2) so your 840 Evo would not work even if you had one of the "Select Models". I believe on those that have it the M.2 port is right on the motherboard so if you do not see it there you are not among the select.

  • Can I install a mSATA as a primary drive on my C560?

Hi all, I Just want to check if it is possible to install a mSATA SSD on my system. There is one port that appears to be a mSATA slot but the screw position holes are not there.
    Anybody have any clues?

    hi moonbugs,
Yep, That's definitely a MPCIE used by SSD
But I strongly suggest you have a detection test first before you buy an SSD
If you know someone or you can bring this system in a store and have an SSD tested out to it first.
Since this port is meant for a TV tuner card and the models released does not offer SSD.
this Port might not support SSD signaling and may fail on detecting an SSD Card.
Again Test out a borrowed card first before you buy one.
But I assure you the port is a MPCIE.

  • G500 - Is it possible to install a mSATA SSD drive?

    Hi!
I am interested in the Lenovo G500 i7-3612QM and I would like to be able to install a mSATA SSD drive on it.
I have read that these drives can be installed on a PCI Express Mini Card slot, and according to the Hardware Maintenance Manual (p. 29) the computer has two of these slots:
      -Wimax/WIFI  x  1
      -SSD  x  1
The problem is that, although the Wi-Fi slot is easily visible (it appears in a picture in the manual, p. 45), I can't find the second slot, neither in the manual nor in the picture of the inside of the notebook I found in this web (The text is in hungarian, but I haven't been able to find any other picture).
Does anybody know if the second PCI Express slot really exists, please?
    Thank you very much!

    Hi MestreKaito,

I’m sorry to inform you that the Image is un-available for the second slot; I would Strongly Suggest Calling Technical Support for Assistance. Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I’m sure they will be a great help.

    Hi,
I don't think there is any limit on that. I believe that anything up to 500GB will definitely work and most likely even drives up to a 1TB. Samsung is a very popular brand with Evo and Pro series drives. I'd go for one of them.

  • Msata SSD in Envy laptop

    Hi,
I'd like to install an msata SDD in my laptop, I know I have an empty msata slot, but it is meant to be used for fastboot files (according to my manual). If I put my own 256GB SSD there, will it only be usable for boot?, or can I also store user files on it???
    Thanks so much in advance!

    Dear Customer,
Welcome and Thank You for posting your query on HP Support Forum
The mSATA port  on the motherboard can be used as a cache drive to a Hard Disk Drive with an Operating System installed on it to give it a performance boost.
Cache drives are used primarily by people who can't afford a large SSD to install their O/S and most frequently used programs on.
I’m sure that the mSATA port is used strictly to cache a HDD with an O/S installed on it and we cannot use mSATA as Primary SSD to store files on it

  • Just Bought 13 Inch MBP - Can I Install 3rd Party SSD w/o SATA Bottlenecks

Apparently, it has shipped with Boot ROM Version: MBP55.00AC.B03
In reading the posts, this appears to have the EFI 1.7 firmware.
Can I install a Crucial 128GB SSD drive and get 3GB speeds? Or am asking for problems?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thank you

Firstly if you get 3 GB per second speed you will have broken all records to date I think. 3 Gb would be the best to hope for. Sorry, I just had to be my smartaxx self to get my day started.
I have no help for you but since no one else is responding, my SuperTalent 256GB SSD would not work fore more than an hour or so, depending on how hard the drive was working, with the EFI 1.7 but it works endlessly with EFI 1.6. But this is only since the new 1819 firmware was flashed to the SSD. I think Crucials SSDs are the same as SuperTalents but there might be differences I am not aware of. They both use firmware updates with the exact same numbers such as 1571, 1819 and so on.

  • Can I install a new SSD on my MBP without the old hard drive?

Here's the scenario. I'm currently in the Philippines leaving for California for college next week. There, I will buy a new SSD (Samsung 830 to be specific). I want to leave my current HDD (the one in my laptop that I'm using right now) here in the Philippines though as my brother here wants to use it. Is there a way for me to install the new SSD without having my old hard drive with me? My macbook pro is an early 2011 15inch MBP running on Mac OS X version 10.7.3 (Lion). I actually don't want to clone my hard drive or anything because I want to start fresh and new with my new SSD. Most of the tutorials I've read online involve some kind of cloning or having the old hard drive still plugged in and having the SSD connected externally, but these methods won't work for me because I won't have the old hard drive. Thanks so much

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.
In either case, to simplify matters you would do well to concoct a Lion or ML bootable installer on a USB stick. In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. See here for details: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17782820#17782820  The procedure applies the same to both of the latest cat flavors.

  • Can't Install mavericks on SSD

    I have a 2012 Macbook Pro 13".
I had a hard disk failure almost 2 weeks ago. [I accidently kept the mac running by using the Caffeine app while keeping macbook in my backpack and roaming around an exhibition]. I saw blinking folder icon and couldn't detect my hard disk at all.
Then I reset SMC and tried to detect it but it didn't work.
My macbook passed the Hardware Test.
So I ordered and installed a new Samsung 840 Evo SSD on my macbook and tried installing mavericks but the Istalled Failed with the following error log:
    localhost OSInstaller[384]: update_dyld_shared_cache exited with 1
PackageKit: Install Failed: Error Domain=PKInstallErrorDomain Code=121 "An error occurred while updating system extension information." UserInfo=0x7fab0300ebb0 {NSUnderlyingError=0x7fab034857f0 "The operation couldn't be completed. (kextcache error 71.)", NSLocalizedDescription=An error occurred while updating system information., arguments=
Install Failed: The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
I used the same mavericks installer USB and installed my SSD on a friend's macbook pro with the same year, make and specs and it installed fine. However, when I reattched that SSD with installed mavericks and booted my macbook it gave me a blinking globe and question mark icon.
Apart from SSD, I'm using all the original RAM and other parts.
    Kindly suggest solution.

It turned out to be bad internal hard drive cable.
I'm seriously disturbed by the lack of support from one of the Genius Bar and had to travel a long distance to get true service from another Genius Bar.
I want to file a formal complaint against that particular Genius Bar. Can someone kindly provide me with the link to file a complaint?

  • Can I install a 1TB SSD on MacBook Early 2008 model?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Early 2008 model running on Lion 10.7.5. Everything worked perfectly until recently I noticed that the HDD has been making some weird clicking sounds. I spoke and showed it to the local repair shop and they suggested that I have my HDD replaced asap as it could crash anytime.
Now I was wondering if I could just install a SSD on it as those run quite faster than HDD's? I did ask the local repair shop this question but they seemed not to know anything about the MacBook's compatability with the SSD as its an old model.
A quick answer would be very much helpful.
    Thanks
    -Mustafa

    • What I really wanted to know is, are the HDD and SSD connectors same? And would the MacBook be able to handle it?
Yes. Should work very well. I've done this on an old Macbook and a new one. Not difficult, but you will need a # 8 torx screw driver and a #1 Phillips.
    The connectors are standardised.
You can google for "how to" videos, there are many on line.

  • Can I install a new SSD and Yosemete at the same time?

I have a 2012 macbook 13" and the latest mavericks 10.5.9, can I use disk maker x, then swap my HDD for an SSD and install Yosemite???

If you mean can you have them both connected at the same time, then it's a yes. I have both connected and use the mouse for some functions and the trackpad for others... works a charm.

  • Can't install OS on SSD for dv7t-7000 QE

Having trouble installing OS for my brand-spanking-new dv7t-7000 QE on a Kingston 120 GB SSD (V+ model, I can provide specifics but don't know them offhand)
    OS is WIndows 7 Pro
    Base QE processor
Trying to install from recovery disks. I feed all four disks, lots of progress bars going through the paces. Lots or reboots. Seems like it's almost  completely done when the install process falls down. Looking at the log says something like:
"2nd Cap...." and  "Error RM detected ... blahblahblah  error"
"[DeployRE] Cannot move c:\rm\rp\sources\boot.wim to d:\Recovery\WindowsRE\WinRE.wim"
    "[DeployRE].Cannot find \bootmgr"
"[DeployRE] Cannot move Deskttop.inr to d:\"
"[DeployRE] annot move Typelist.tst to d:\"
or something to that effet. I've got 2MB of files that describe all this, if you're really interested.
I ran gparted live on the thing and it looks like the install process put a 300 MB partition and a 92 GB partition that's NTFS and some smallish partition (can't recall) and left nearly 20 GB unallocated. Strange.
I suspect one of the following is true:
    1) 120GB is, strangely enough, too small to build a basic c:\ drive for a newish computer. Especially when you're talking about all the bloatware included in a basic HP recovery-disk install.
    2) HP and Intel have found a way to keep people from using SSDs on the newer computers. Perhaps they've done things to the BIOS. They want to parse-out the gains brought by SSDs in incremental chunks and sprinkle these up the line. Note that HP only includes SSD in their most expensive laptops.
    3) Cockpit error
    4)The SSD is broken
    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Hi,
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around.
You can create a retail installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below ( this must be the exact version that came with your notebook ) and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

Any additional drivers you may need can be found Here.

  • Can I install a SATA SSD on my Mac Book Pro mid 2010 Model 7,1? OWC recommends a SATA 2 SSD to get get 3Gb/s transfer rate.

I have a mid 2010 MBP Model 7,1 and I would like to swap out the HDD for a SSD.  I was looking at replacing it with a Samsung EVO 840 (500Gb) SATA 3 SSD with 6Gb/s transfer rate.  But OWC recommends a SATA 2 with 3Gb/s transfer rate.  OWC recommends the SATA 2 because  my system will allow 3GB/s whereas with the SATA3 it will restrict it to 1Gb/s.

I was looking at the Corsair website and found a couple rams they
recommend. They both use 1.35V which I believe is the same voltage as my
current 2x2G Ram.  I have a local computer parts vendor that carries the
Corsair Rams for my MBP 13" but the voltage is listed at 1.5V.  Would they
still be compatible with my system?
    Thanks for your help,
