Can I install an OEM version of Windows 7 on my Mac?

I am completely unfamiliar with windows terminology. I ordered a copy of Windows 7 64-bit and when it came it said OEM on it and had all these warnings that it had to be preinstalled on a computer and I assumed it was like the software that comes with a Mac that you can only install on that one machine. I returned it unopened because I was afraid it wouldn't work. Since then I've read on these boards that OEM is a system builder, and it's cheaper, which is why I got it, and can only be used on one machine. But it sounds like I could install it on one Mac. I don't really care about installing it on more than one machine. So my question is, is that correct? can I install an OEM version of Windows 7 on one Mac? I wanted to check, because although it's cheaper, it's still almost $100 and I didn't want to waste that if I opened it and it didn't work. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I plan to use parallels by the way, but I am posting on this board because it was suggested that you folks know the most about windows.

  • Can i load an oem version of windows on my macbook pro?

Is there any prohibition from using an OEM version of Windows OS to run on Parallels instead of a full retail version, for installation on my Macbook Pro?

There is one OEM type verison that system builders use, that can be used to install on a Mac via Parallels, VMFusion or the free VirtualBox.
The one from your old Dell or Compaq type PC that came with the machine isn't it, that's a vendor specific OEM version.
Of course the retail disks work too.

  • Bought SSD Separately, am I able to install the OEM version of Windows onto it?

    Hi,
I have a new HP Envy Desktop and I bought an SSD seperately which I will be installing soon. I want to install my OS onto it, as I will primarily be using it for gaming. There are no documents I need to back up as the computer is brand new.
Just wondering if someone can clarify the process of me installing the OS which comes with the computer onto the SSD. Am I able to install it through the recovery partition, or do I need to make a bootable disk etc?
Also, will there be any issues with it being an OEM version of Windows as opposed to retail?
    Many Thanks

The easiest method to achieve this is to use the Migration Tool available from your SSD manufacturer, don't forget to back up your personal data.
This site also shows how to do it::

  • [HELP] Can I install a new version of Windows 7 on my Lenovo G550?? (+ One Key Rescue???????)

I bought a Lenovo G550 with 4GB DDR3, T4300, 320Gb. It came with Windows 7 BASIC installed and I'd like to install a version of Windows 7 Professional I have here. I want to do a clean install!
Well, when I started the installation, the disks were partitioned as follows:
    1. 200 Mb - System;
    2. 233 GB - Hard c: \ (where I believe that Windows 7 Basic is installed)
    3. 30.2 GB - Lenovo (here are the drivers, totaling 800MB used!)
    4. LENOVO_PART - 14.8GB [OEM] (is a hidden partition! Probably the One Key Rescue. He says CAN NOT INSTALL, OEM is because, for the MANUFACTURER)
The question is: if I delete the first 3 partitions, leaving only the hidden partition (Lenovo_PART-14.8Gb) and install Windows 7 Professional, will work?? If later I want to restore the system using the discs created by One Key Rescue, will work too? That will give an error?
PLEASE HELP! Windows 7 BASIC sucks!
(Thanks to google for the english translation)

OK - I was under the impression that you had a brand new machine and did not have to restore any data stored already.  If it were me - I would back up all of my data - not with True Image - but just back it up.  Then I would do a clean install of Windows 7  (getting rid of all those partitions) and either create one or two.   I just use one and then do regular images wtih Acronis True Image - but you could create two - one for the OS and applications and another for all your data directories.
I don't know how you would do a new install while trying to create the partitions exactly the way Lenovo has them when the machine is delivered.  (I don't think Lenovo does either)  So - I would make it simple and just get rid of them all after your data is backed up.   If you have new applications loaded, I would just install them again.  Not the most convenient but in the long run you will have an easier system to back up and manage.
I'm not a fan of Lenovo's instant restore proceedure, because A: it is complicatied, and B: it doesn't buy you anything if you crash your hard drive anyway.  It is really only good if you A: do regular backups with the instant restore, and B: either have a virus or corrupt some data and need to use it.  You can do the same thing by using the Microsoft system restore point proceedure.  So - to me it is just a gimick and makes your drive a mess wtih hidden partitions, etc.
That would be my approach.  I would NOT try to backup your current configuraton with Acronis before installing a new OS.  It can be done - but I think it will be very messy.  A much better approach would be just to delete all of those partitions with the Windows 7 install proceedure - then create just one or two new partitions as you install the new OS.  Then start using Acronis to do regular images on your drive.  You can also do incrementals so it only takes a couple of minutes each day.
Installing Windows 7 is a piece of cake as it finds all the drivers for you.  Just make sure you have it connected to an ethernet cable.  Then install your applications and then load your data back.  Very straigtforward.
The advantages you will get will be:  A:  You will get use of your entire hard drive space.  B:  It will be much easier to manage and back up.  C:  Using Acronis to backup your drive will be simple  D: If you ever lose data you can simply use Acronis to restore the directory or data file, or E:  If you lose your entire hard drive you simply get a new one and then restore from the Acronis CD and point it to your last backup image.
I hope this helps.  Good luck.

  • Can I use an OEM version of windows for bootcamp?

Is windows 7 professional 64-bit (OEM) okay for bootcamp?

"Retail OEM" conflates the two different types of operating systems available for purchase. The proper term for a standalone, non-branded (ie Dell, Asus, etc) Windows disc is System Builder.
This is what you'd want to purchase, and it will work just fine for Boot Camp.

  • How can I install an OLDER version of iTunes-- on a Mac?

I upgraded to iTunes 9.1--- and now it won't connect to the iTunes store. How can I go BACK to an older version. This is terrible--- and Apple is NOT HELPING!
It seems to be a common problem.
    Help!

to downgrade to a previous iTunes version, you could try this user tip that seemed to have worked for some:
    +1) Quit iTunes.+
+2) Delete iTunes from your Applications folder.+
+3) Go to your ~/Music/iTunes folder. Delete or rename the "iTunes Library" file.+
+4) Open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and look for the backup of your old pre-9 library; it should be dated at about the time you first ran iTunes 9. Copy it back out to the ~/Music/iTunes folder, and rename it to "iTunes Library".+
+6) click here to download iTunes 8.2.1. The page says it's for G3, but the Read Me file says it'll run on G4, G5, and Intel too. Open the disk image and run the installer.+
+You should now be able to run iTunes 8.2.1 again.+
+And your iTunes will restore to before you upgraded and you won't lose anything+.

  • HT5639 Can Iinstall an OEM version of windows 8

Is it possible to install an OEM version of Windows 8 on my new iMac 21" using bootcamp? I have been unable to find a full retail version. Similarly only OEM versions of windows 7 seem to be available.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you are referring to System Builder versions, you can use it. Moreover, you must use it if you haven't got Windows 7 installed in your Mac.
To install Windows in your computer, follow these steps > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf

  • OEM Version of Windows 7

So I'm purchasing Windows 7 64-Bit OEM version. I had a pervious thread, but it was getting lost and off topic so I am starting over. I hate to be a pain. Just please answer yes, or no. Can I run the OEM version of Windows 7 64-Bit on BootCamp 4.0 on Lion? If anyone has done this please post here. Thanks for everyone's great help!

    No.
You need to validate with Lord Redmond in order to get security and other updates, thus information about your machine is sent to them.
They will know your running a OEM version (if you manage to get it to install in the first place) and likely cut you off after 30 days.

  • Can I install both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on the same version of VMWare 5?

Even though I am running Apple OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on my new 2013 iMac, I have just installed VMWare's "Fusion 5" so I can have Windows 7 installed on the "Fusion 5, for limited usage needs.
I also would like to have a running version of Snow Leopard available to run my large collection of original Lynda.com training DVD's and CD's ... which unfortunately, now only allow the Lynda.com GUI player to operate in (and up to) Snow Leopard (at least this is what the Tech folks at Lynda.com have told me).
Since Lynda.com is no longer producing any or their training programs on CD or DVD any longer, and because they have stopped supporting their training programs to run on Lion and above, I will have to have a version of Snow Leopard installed to run these training programs, and still be able to run them using the Lynda.com GUI player.
    So here's my dilemma:
    1.  Can I install both a version of Snow Leopard OS on my "VMWare "Fusion 5" .... along with a running version of Windows 7 on       the same "Fusion 5"?
    2.  Do I install only the Windows 7 on the VMWare, and find some other "device" to run a version of Snow Leopard off of?
    3.  Do I consider using "BootCamp", in conjunction with "Fusion 5", to get access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7?
Has anyone had any experience installing BOTH a previous (older) version of Apple OSX  ... AND ... a Windows OS version on one installed version of VMWare "Fusion"?
    OR
Any suggestions on how to set up having access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 .... while keeping OS Mountain Lion as my main OS?

    mende1
Thanks ... the "You have to purchase Snow Leopard Server" I knew about, and a few days ago I just ordered a copy from the Apple Store:
    Snow Leopard Server - Ordered at: 1-800-692-7753 ... OR ... 1-866-254-8313
I asked for Apple Snow Leopard Server (Model MC588Z/A (SLSVR)
    "Unlimited Client License"
It was around $25.50 (USD) with sales tax and shipping (NYS).
One thing though ... when you mention:  "you should make two virtual machines".
Not being too familiar with "Fusion 5" yet, Is setting up "two machine" all done under one installed version of "Fusion 5"?
Would you have "links" to any "Fusion 5" installation instructions/info for setting up the
"two machines" (one for Snow Leopard and one for Windows 7)?
