Can I install Appleworks 5.0 on OS X 10.5.8?

I have the original OS 8.5 system software cd from my old blueberry iMac, from which I am transferring Appleworks 5.0.3 files to my newer MacBook Pro. Can I install the Appleworks 5.0 application from my original OS 8.5 system software cd onto my MacBook Pro to read the files which I am transferring from my old blueberry iMac?

You will need to get AppleWorks 6.2.4 or 6.2.9 to open those files on an Intel Mac or any Mac running Leopard or later. You could try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name). Hardcore Mac sells AppleWorks 6.2.4. You do need to make sure you get at least AppleWorks 6.2 with an OS X-aware installer.

  • Can't install Appleworks in OS X

I have Appleworks 6 on CD and various updater files on other CDs. However the last time I reinstalled my OS on this machine I didn't bother installing Classic and without it I cannot install v. 6.0 and I believe until I install this, I can't install any of the OS X updaters
So my question is, is there any means by which I can install Appleworks without installing an entire Classic system folder?
With my utmost thanks in advance as always for your kind assistance
    Best regards
    Bernard

You don't have to buy a new Mac. The retail box of AppleWorks can be purchased at most retailers that sell Apple software, either in a "brick & mortar" or online store. Sometimes you can find it on eBay. Do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name).

  • How can I install Appleworks on a new Mac?

I've been using Macs since 1993, and have a lot of old files in Appleworks format. Whilst I now use Office and iWork '08, I'd be lost without Appleworks for many old files. Is it possible to install Appleworks on a new Mac, running Leopard? I hope to replace my laptop soon, but the fact its been discontinued has put my off for now. Any help gratefully received!

You can install AppleWorks 6.2.4 or AppleWorks 6.2.9 on your new Mac, using an install disk that has an OS X installer. (Installers prior to mid 2001 ran in Mac OS 9, and although the version of AppleWorks they install will likely run on Tiger or Leopard, the installer won't.)
Getting hold of a retail version may prove a bit difficult, as Apple is no longer supplying it to retailers. Hard Core Mac was reported recently to have install disks containing AppleWorks 6.2.4, and AW 6 does come up occassionally on eBay and other similar sites.
If the laptop you are replacing contains AppleWorks, you can transfer the application to your new machine by simply moving the whole AppleWorks 6 folder and its contents into the Applications folder on the new machine. Doing this via a CD will give you a backup copy should you ever need to reinstall the application. AppleWorks will create any other required files and folders as it needs them. Note that the usual single user licence allows for only a single copy of the application to exist on a single computer at a time. After moving the AW 6 folder to the new machine, you should delete it from the old to stay within the terms of the licence.

  • Can't install Appleworks 6 on Intel/Leopard

I bought a new iMac last week after my Powerbook died. Today I installed the Leopard upgrade on it. Then I got out my Appleworks 6 CD to install it, but Leopard refuses, saying "because the Classic environment is no longer supported." This is an early version of Appleworks 6; it says it requires OS 8.1 or greater.

Obviously, you have an early AppleWorks 6 CD when the installer was only OS 8/9. It wasn't until sometime in 2001 when the AppleWorks installer also included an OS X version.
You have a couple of choices to get AppleWorks 6 installed on your new iMac. The easiest would be to buy a new package, but that may not be necessary. The best solution is to find someone with a Mac that has Classic or runs OS 8 or 9 & can burn a CD. Install AppleWorks 6 on the other Mac, update AppleWorks to at least version 6.2.4 & then burn the whole AppleWorks 6 folder to a CD. You can then copy the AppleWorks 6 folder to the Applications folder on your iMac. This CD will now be your backup should you ever need to reinstall AppleWorks again.
If you don't know someone else with a Mac you can use, a local Mac user group is a good place to start. You can search for one on Apple's Find a User Group page.
To keep within the Apple user license, you need to remove the copy from the Mac you used to install AppleWorks. If the someone already has AppleWorks installed, just burn their folder to the CD. You will remain within the license since you do have a license for AppleWorks for your Mac.

  • Can't install Appleworks 6.0.4

I remember this happening before but I just can't remember what to do.
Just reinstalled 10.2 on my Powerbook G3 and want to install Appleworks 6.0.4 but for some reason the installer wants me to install an OS9 version only.
I distinctly remember buying this for OSX but there doesn't seem to be one for OSX and I can't seem to work out how to install it on 10.2!
I remember something similar to this happening before and I had to install it onto a Partition with OS9 on and it would open straight up into 10.2 without using Classic.
    Thanks

You need Classic to run the installer, even though the program installs in OS X. Back when Appleworks 6 was invented, there was no such thing as an OS X only machine. You'll need to install Classic if you don't have it, or if you still have a copy of Appleworks on another computer, just drag the appleworks folder from the applications folder of the old machine to that of the new machine.
Once you've got Appleworks installed, you'll need to update to at least 6.2.4 to have the program run with any stability in OS X.

AppleWorks is a very old application and requires Rosetta to run under recent systems.
    Lion does not include Rosetta.
If you browse this forum you will find many posts on this issue.

  • I have a MacBook Pro.  I am told that I can install AppleWorks on this Intel Machine. True or False? If true do I need to have Rosetta on the compuer?

I have an Intel MacBook Pro. I have been told I can install AppleWorks 6.2.9 on this machine. Is this correct? I read somewhere I would also need Rosetta but do not know if this is correct. If so how can i get Rosetta? I can presently open my old Appl;eWorks documents with Pages but my wife insist I try to get her AppleWorks back?
I had a copy of AppleWorks 6.0 from the old days but it would not install on my MacBook. A message came up saying Apple no longer supports OS9. I can purchase a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.9 but if it want install then I would be wasting my money.
    Thanks,  john

To install Rosetta you insert your initial Snow Leopard installation disk and double click optional install then double click the optional install package which will lead you through installing Rosetta. It is on the  install disk but is not installed by default.
Once you get Appleworks 6 working, assuming it then does, you can download the 6.2.9 update

  • How many computers can we install one purchase of AW on?

    Hi All!
If we purchase one copy of Appleworks for home use can we install it on all of our computers at home, or do we have to spend $79 for each computer?
Two computers are running 10.4.x and two computers are running 10.3.9.
    Thank you very much!
    Diane Dennis

    Hi Diane,
The AppleWorks User License is displayed during the installation process, and must be agreed to in order to continue with the installation. Once the application is installed, though, the licence is difficult to locate on your computer.
A search in the Apple Store will bring you here, where you can find the full agreement, including this excerpt from paragraph 2:
    2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time.
Site licences, permitting installation on multiple computers at a single site, were available for earlier versions of AppleWorks and ClarisWorks, and may be available for AW 6. You'd need to talk with an Apple representative or reseller to determine if they're still available, and if you'd be eligible for one.

  • Can I install icloud on my MacBook? What I have here is MobileMe.

I want iClouad on my MacBook but what I have here is MobileMe.  How can I install iCloud?

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mountain Lion preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is non non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mountain Lion, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.
The requirements for Mountain Lion are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
    and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • Can't open Appleworks

I was erasing the free space on my disk tonight in order to get rid of some data that I had deleted and happened to open appleworks and create a document while I was waiting. The only funny thing that happened was a message "your startup disk is full". I didn't do anything else after that and the disk utility finished and then couldn't close appleworks and the document that I was working on. I read many other posts and dumped all of the preferences and recent items and disabled items and ran a repair on disk permissions. Still can't open Appleworks. No problems with any other programs. What to do now? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
imac power pc G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Appleworks 6.2.9

Where does it say you still have AppleWorks 6.2.7? Is it in Get Info? The splash screen when starting AppleWorks or in About AppleWorks while AppleWorks is running?
If you tried reinstalling AppleWorks, updating it, deleting preferences & recent items or repairing permissions while AppleWorks was running, none of those steps will be effective. You must quit AppleWorks first. Also, you must be logged in as an administrator to install or update AppleWorks. After installing or updating you must then repair permissions & delete the AppleWorks preferences before starting AppleWorks. I'm sure you checked, but to make sure you delete all of the AppleWorks preferences (there are four in two places for each user), take a look at my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.

  • Installing Appleworks on new iMac

I just replaced my iMac G5 (running Tiger) with a new Intel-based iMac (also running Tiger). The G5 came with Appleworks bundled; the new one did not. I'm reasonably sure that it is legal for me to install Appleworks on the new iMac (as long as I remove it from the old one); I just don't know how. It won't allow me to install from the install/restore CDs that came with the G5. Can I just copy the Appleworks (US English) folder to the Applications folder on the new machine?

    Hi
You should be able to do just that, yes, using firewire. Try just dragging & dropping from 1 computer to the other, if that fails:
    Shut down both computers
Connect computers using 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable.
    Boot up Intel iMac normally.
Boot up G5 holding down T until firewire symbol appears on screen.
    Navigate to HD/Applications on Intel.
    Navigate to HD/Applications on G5.
    Put windows side-by-side.
Drag & drop Appleworks folder into Intel's Applications folder.
    Eject G5's disk icon & shutdown G5.
    Shut down Intel.
    Disconnect wire.
One more thing, make sure it's Appleworks 6.2.4 or above.

  • Installing Appleworks 6 onto OS X (10.4.11) - it won't!!

I've always used Appleworks since I first bought an Apple back in 1996 but after a recent hard-drive failure I had to reload my OS onto an erased drive. I had backed up all my files and documents but a week later I tried to access an Appleworks document only to find that I hadn't yet reinstalled Appleworks.
As I'm sure many of you know the Appleworks 6 CD will not install onto OSX but requires Classic - which I don't have.
My copy of OS9.1 won't install - don't ask me why but I can't startup from the CD either through Preferences or holding down the C key.
Is there any other way of getting Appleworks to load from the original CD onto OSX?

The AppleWorks install CD is not a bootable disk.
Your OS 9 installer is too old for your Quick Silver machine.
But the Power Mac G4 Software Install disk deliver with your QuickSilver (grey disk) is able to install Mac OS 9.2.1 which may be used to install AppleWorks.
Leave the HD with Mac Os X installed
    insert the Software Install CD
run the system Installer and ask it to install Classic.
So, you will have both Operating systems available on your machine.
After that, replace the Software Install CD by the AppleWorks one.
Double click on the installer icon.
It will run under Classic and will do its duty.
When finished, burn a CD storing the newly installed AppleWorks 6 folder so it will be available if you are forced to re-install one day.

  • Where can I find appleworks after I have completely erased my computer.

I recently erased everything off of my computer, but I don't have basic applications like iPhoto or appleworks in my application folder. Where can I find them to download them on to my computer. I heard I could get them on my original mac software that I received when I bought my mac. Is this true?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I'm guessing you have a G5 iMac. If it is a pre-Intel iMac, AppleWorks was pre-installed on it. Apple has written two articles, Knowledge Base article 300316 on installing AppleWorks 6 & Knowledge Base article 61802 on restoring the software than came with your Mac.
The "iMacPowerMac6,1" in your profile doesn't mean much to me or other "old-timers" around here & I haven't found a list to convert it to something I do know.

  • Can I transfer appleworks databases to some other app in order to print mailing labels?

Can I transfer appleworks databases to Bento or elsewhere on my new MacBook Pro in order to print mailing labels, or do I have to re-enter all the information?

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available - the newPages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings).
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in the older versions of  Numbers - the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
Presentations can be opened directly only in the older versions Keynote again the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
To use other programs, or open Painting or Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first. Nothing will open AW database documents.
If you have upgraded to Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks and have AppleWorks documents you cannot open, then you should be able to install Snow Leopard on an external hard disk and start from that (provided that the Mac did not come with anything higher than Snow Leopard originally installed); and success has been reported in running Snow Leopard under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: it seems complex; however Snow Leopard Server may still be available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price and this makes the process a lot easier. I haven't tried either method: use at your own discretion. You can then run AppleWorks as an emergency measure.
