Can I install boot camp on my computer, but install all my PC games for it on an external hardrive?
I have a new Mac, but I want to install boot camp on it. However, I would only really be using it for gaming.
On another post, someone said that you could not install boot camp entirely onto an external hardrive. As boot camp would only be for gaming, then could I install all my games (when I'm given the option to chose the file of where to install) onto an external drive which is correctly formatted? (what is the format too?)

Thunderbolt storage is a great idea. OS X can run off one and yes you can create an NTFS drive or partition.
One person I thought said Tb was possible but may have taken a system image restore to get there, only one, and not 'documented' to say how to.

Delete everything in the Steam folder except for the "steam.exe" and the "steamapps" folder
Move the steam folder over to the secondary drive you want it on
Open the "steam.exe" and it will reconfigure steam
Log in and BAM! All your games are recognized
Now, you can put what ever games you want on the SSD with Steam Mover (or junctions)
Create another folder on the C:\ drive and name it (C:\Users\Sean\Steam Games)
Run Steam Mover and have it move the game to that location and you are done!
Now go play the games you want!
How to have steam on the SSD while having the games on either the SSD or HDD:

HT1461 Can one use boot camp to play computer games normally only found for PCs?
I have some older computer games, specifically Warhammer 40k rts games, that I woud still like to play and was curious if boot camp would allow me to play those on my mac? Also, if it is possible am I putting my computer at risk in any way? I'd like to play them but not so badly that I would be damaging my mac pro or shortening its lifespan. There dont appear to be any emulators out there currently so I'm checking here to see if anyone knows anything.

the 2 are unrelated, you already have boot camp assistant as an application on OSX, if the firmware page doesn't show an updated firmware for your machine then there's no update available

Windows 7 Freezes at Restart After Installing Boot Camp Drivers
Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro and am having troubles installing 32-Bit Windows 7. All seems to be functional until I install the Boot Camp drivers included on the Install Disk. I have tried using the Boot Camp 3.1 update, but the same problem occurs. After the computer freezes on the install page, I can no longer access Windows (even in Safe Mode) and am forced to restart the entire process (that is, repartition the hard drive and reinstall Windows).
If I don't install the Boot Camp drivers, Windows seems to be functional, so I'm pretty sure it's something in the Boot Camp package causing the trouble.
Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas or workarounds?I finally got it to work. You need to go to the NVidia website and install their drivers. I think the Apple supplied ones are out of date and are causing Windows to hang. Install Boot Camp from the supplied DVD, install the update that Apple supplies through the newly installed Boot Camp, and then go to the NVidia website to manually download the drivers. I used the GeForce 300M series installer. Make sure you do all of this before letting Windows restart.
I had a few issues with it hanging a few times, but once I was able to get into Windows it seems to be working. All of the other Apple supplied drivers seem to work. -

How can I activate Boot Camp? I want to install an educational library that is on a CD. People that have PC's can use the CD. I have a mac mini and I want to open the CD to read/review. I have the Snow Leopard model.
Open Boot Camp Assistant in the Utilities folder. You will see the following:
Click on the Print Installation & Setup Guide button. Click the OK button in the dropdown panel. You will now see the main Print panel. You can now print the document to your printer. If you prefer to make a PDF file you can read on the computer instead, then select Save as PDF from the PDF dropdown menu on the lower left. Save it to the location of your choice.
Now, read this document carefully in order to follow the proper procedures for creating a Windows partition on your hard drive to which you can install Windows 7 from a retail Windows 7 installer DVD.
Other options for running Windows:

Boot Camp Slipstream Says a Full Install is an Upgrade, Stalls Out?
I'm attempting to install XP on a 2.16 GHz C2D MBP with Snow Leopard. I have created a 20gb partition using the Boot Camp Assistant. I have created a slipstream CD-R from a combination of a XP SP1 disc (bought the first day XP was released!) and the FULL SP2 service pack as recommended. I followed instructions for the slipstream creation to the letter. Same for the CD.
The install starts up and I declare I want a full install and not a recovery. Then I receive an error notice telling me I have an upgrade disc and must use a FULL copy for the install. Without a way to eject the slipstreamed disc and put the full SP1 disc in, for verification, I am stuck. I see no mentions of this problem anywhere.
I have seen comments concerning similar issues suggest a problem in the disc creation. But I have done the process three times now, revealing all hidden files and ensuring the use of the same legacy burning software mentioned in the slipstream creation posts.
As Boot Camp still offers to download necessary files, a feature that apparently NEVER worked, I am interested to know if anyone can really help me. I live in China and see boot camped Macs everywhere. But they all have hacked copies of XP or 7 running. I want to use a legal copy. How?
I'm installing XP to keep access to great scanners unsupported on Mac and play older videogames.If you've already done a search in these forums and couldn't find anything then your best bet would be a Yahoo/Google search, (or what ever is used over there.)
Unfortunately it sounds like it still didn't slipstream right, have you tried using it on a Windows machine and see it it works?
Another option is to download a non legal version ( if you can find a "clean" version) then just install your legal serial number. Or even a friends copy of a SP2 or SP3 version and use your serial number instead. From what i've read quite a few gave up and did the same. -

Looking on the apple websire it seems that i can only use leopard for an OS if i want to use Boot camp, am I understanding this right?
Just wanted to be sure before i bought leopard just so i can run boot camp. I have had my mac a year and actually found a need to run windows, and nothing else will work as well.

Can I install Boot Camp on an external disk?
I have a MacBook Air ( version 3,2) and I am running out of space to install Boot Camp. I use Windows 7 by the way.
Can I install Boot Camp on an external disk? How do I go about doing this? I have an Apple external super drive and I have two USB ports on my computer.
Can I install the mac operating system on the external disk including the Applications and then install Boot Camp as per usual? How would I get the Windows 7 program to install on the external disk using the superdrive that I have?BootCamp will only install on an internal disk.
If you are wiling to do some work, do some Google searches, use third party tools, and make your own custom Windows install disc, then you might be able to get what you want, but there is no guarantee that it will work on your specific hardware.
I researched this topic a year or two ago and found people claiming that using rEFIt and custom built Windows install discs, that they were able to do what you seek. After reading through all the instructions, I found it much easier to upgrade the HD in my MacBookPro to a 500GB drive and just installed my BootCamp on the spare 180GB space from the upgrade. That took me a little over an afternoon, and it was fully supported... -
Can't find Boot Camp on my leopard install DVD
I upgraded to leopard when it came out. I have the leopard DVD install disc. I can not find Boot Camp to install it. I also can not find the boot camp install assistant on my computer or on the disk. Please help, I need to install xp badly and ASAP! Thanks
So the DVD you inserted is the iMac install Disc 1? When I type in the "/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/" nothing happens.... I see you are using an earlier OS 10.4.

Can't Install Boot Camp from Snow Leopard DVD in Windows 7
I have an iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 24-inc (08) running 10.6.2 and Windows 7.
I was able to successfully use the Boot Camp Assistant to partition and install Windows 7 on my iMac. After the installation, I was able to download updates from Windows Updates which included video drivers.
However, when I inserted my Snow Leopard DVD to install Boot Camp 3.0, the Setup.exe only gave me two options: To Install Mac OS X remotely and to install CD/DVD Sharing. I was not presented any options to install Boot Camp.
I did manually navigate the Snow Leopard DVD and found a Boot Camp directory with its own setup.exe and when I clicked on it, it gave me an Installation Error stating "Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model". I did some research and I found no mention of my iMac listed as an unsupported model.
Any help would be appreciated.When I inserted Snow Leopard DVD, the autorun didn't show me an option to install Boot Camp Drivers. Just like the author of this topic, it only showed me 2 options: to Install Mac OS X remotely and to install CD/DVD Sharing.
Then, I've run Windows Explorer, navigated to Snow Leopard DVD, opened Boot Camp folder and runned "setup.exe". The installer opened and Boot Camp 3.0 was installed successfully.
I don't know if it could help you guys with that error message, but after the installation of Windows 7 64bits, I've rebooted my Macbook Pro. Only after the reboot I did the Boot Camp Drivers installation.
You can also try to run the "setup.exe" as Administrator (right-click, Run as administrator).
Also, my Snow Leopard DVD is that grey one with the white "Mac OS X Install DVD" labelled on it. -

I'm having a problem while installing boot camp drivers on my vista with using the Leopard disc, it always stop installing and gives me a message about sufficient privilege then i have to choose between these choices (Abort-retry-ignore)
please guys how i can solve this problem??Well i did the same thing but i lost so many functions, such as:-
1_ Volume controller on my keyboard is not working.
2_ I cant switch to my macintosh unless if i restart and insert the leopard disc to open the startup disc and let me choose the way i want my computer to reboot.
3_ isight is not working.
4_ Bluetooth is not working.
and so many stuff.
i hope that there is another way like giving it the permission or something like that?

Boot Camp wasn't designed to install Linux. Apart from that, the Boot Camp version included in OS X Mountain Lion will ask you to insert a Windows 7 or Windows 8 DVD in order to run Boot Camp, as far as I know.
Apple doesn't support Linux on Macs, but it works properly on Macs. There are a lot of how-to's in the Internet about the steps to install Linux and the different possibilities you have. Also, what distribution do you want to install on the computer? You should also consider the option to install Linux on a virtual machine -
I installed Windows 8-32 bit before installing Boot Camp 5 (currently have 4). Is there anything I can do now to install Boot Camp 5 then re-install Windows with the 64 bit version?
I am hoping that I do not need to delete the partition and start all over.Boot Camp 5 drivers can only be installed in 64-bit Windows 7 and 8 versions, so first you have to install a 64-bit Windows 8 version.
Note that Microsoft doesn't support upgrades from a 32-bit Windows to a 64-bit version, so you have to do a clean install, losing your applications, but you can keep your data, stored in "Windows.old", a folder at the root level of your Windows volume. Insert your Windows 8 DVD, hold the C key while your computer is starting and install Windows in the Windows partition.
After installing Windows 8, install the Windows support software for 64-bit Windows 7 and 8 versions
