  • Can I install Mac OS X Lion on an external FireWire800 drive?

Can I install Mac OS X Lion on an external FireWire drive? I have bought a Lion Thumb Drive. I'd like to install Lion on the FW drive and then boot from there. The FW drive is a brand-new LaCie D2 Quadra 2 TB drive that has FW 800, 400, USB, and esATA connectivity.  Can't find any manual describing how to do this. Any help appreciated. The more detail, the better. Thanks.

Yes, you can. When you run the installer you will get to a screen where you will see the default target drive, usually "Macintosh HD." Under the icon you will see a link to display other drives. Click on that so you will see the external drive you have connected. Select that then continue the installation.
For simplicity connect the drive using FW800.

  • How can you install Mac OS X Lion on a new, empty hard drive?

If the only way to install Mac OS X Lion is by downloading it via the Mac App Store, it's going to be very difficult to put it on a brand-new hard drive unless Apple provides us with workarounds,So what should we do when want to install Mac OSX Lion on new HD?
    ThanQ

What you get from the Mac App Store will be an Installer Application. You will be able to transfer that Installer from Mac to Mac. I have not seen it yet, but we may also be able to burn an installer disk, we shall have to see just how things work.
Apple has always been known as an innovative company. And when they announce something new folks always go nuts with reasons that this cannot work. When Apple stopped making Macs with floppy drives and iMacs only had optical drives, people went crazy. Today no one makes computers with floppy drives.

  • Can't install MAC OS X Lion - Macintosh HD "This disk cannot be used to start up your computer."

I downloaded OS X Lion this morning and when I went to install it I got a "Screen - Select the disk where you want to install OS X."  -- Had two disk my Macintosh HD and my Time Machine (both are 1TB).  The top and most important is the Macintosh HD (999.86GB - 739.75GB available states "This disk cannot be used to start up your computer".  What do I need to do to install OS X Lion?

Create a Backup Lion Bootable 10.7  Disk
Purchaseand download Lion from the Mac App Store on any Lion compatible Macrunning Snow Leopard.
Right click on “Mac OS X Lion”     installer and choose the option to “Show Package Contents.”
Inside the Contents folder that     appears you will find a SharedSupport folder and inside the     SharedSupport folder you will find the “InstallESD.dmg.” This is     the Lion boot disc image we have all been waiting for.
Copy “InstallESD.dmg” to     another folder like the Desktop.
Launch Disk Utility and click the     burn button.
Select the copied “InstallESD.dmg” as the image to burn,     insert a standard sized 4.7 GB DVD, and wait for your new Lion Boot     Disc to come out toasty hot.
With this disc you can boot any Lion compatible Mac, and install10.7 just like you installed previous version of Mac OS X. You caneven use Disk Utility's Restore function to image your Lion boot discimage onto a external drive suitable for performing a clean installon a optical-drive-less MacBook Air, or Mac mini server.
If your using Mac's in a mission critical type environment or have third party hardware or software you must rely upon working correctly. It's advised to wait until all the bugs, driver updates, third party software updates and other issues are resolved before upgrading. This might take several months. Then if you do so, do one machine at a time and carefully test everything before full deployment.
It's also highly advised to backup all one's data either manually to a external powered drive in addition to TimeMachine and Hold option bootable Carbon Copy Clones etc.

  • I can't install Mac OS X Lion, I want to go back to Snow Leopard

The problem is I am stuck in the OS X Lion Install window but when I try to install it, it asks for my Apple ID, I give it but It says I haven't bought Lion. So I gave up and decided to just go back to Snow Leopard, how do I do that?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Have you purchased OS X Lion? If so, check that it's not hidden in your Apple ID, so unhide it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US Finally, you will be able to reinstall Lion.
If you want to go back to Snow Leopard, your Mac should have come with DVDs or a USB drive. If your computer came with a USB drive, just insert the USB drive, hold the Option (Alt) key while your computer is starting, choose the USB drive and reinstall Snow Leopard. You may have to erase the hard drive before installing it.
If your Mac came with DVDs, you need an external optical drive or another PC or Mac to use Remote Install Mac OS X

  • Can't Install Mac OS X Lion On Used MacBook

Hello I finally decided to buy my first Apple product and it was a used MacBook. The previous owner had erased the hard drive or whatever so I can only access the Mac OS X Utilities. I went to reinstall the OS using the Reinstall Mac OS X option where I found that I needed to make an apple id, after doing all of that I kept getting a prompt saying "This apple ID has not purchased OS X Lion". So I bought the OS X Lion on their website and finally got the redemption code in my email but it says I have to redeem it through the Mac App Store which the MacBook I bought does not have. I also do not own another Apple product or know of anyone with a Mac I can use to redeem the code with. Also the closest Apple Store is like 3 hours away from me which I don't have any free time to spare driving there. Also I do not have any of the install discs that would of originally come with it. If anyone can help me figure out how to redeem this it or just let me know if it is a lost cause, it would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what exactly you wanted but this is what it gave me
    MACBOOK (13-INCH MID 2007)

Also below that it states it has valid purchase date but telephone technical support has expired and the repairs and service coverage has expired.

  • Can't install Mac OS X Lion

I recently installed a new Hard drive into my MBP. The install for the OS worked for about a week, then began to freeze. I was forced to manually shut down the Macbook (Holding the power button). I figured it was an OS problem, so I decided to wipe the HD again using the Disk Utitlity off the OS Disc. I tried to install the OS and halfway through the installation of the OS I got an error message saying "Install Failed, Mac OSX Could not be installed on your computer, click restart to restart your computer and try installing again" Now when I press restart, the same thing occurs. I try manually shutting down and booting from the disc, to partion the HD again, but it doesn't boot, it goes straight to the installation. How do I get rid of this to get my Mac up and running 100% again? Here's a photo of what I get through the installation. Its not the best quality but its the best my 11" Acer can get lol. Hope it helps!
    Macbook Specs:
    Mid-2009 Model
    Intel 2.26ghz Processor
    500GB, 7200rpm Internal HD
    2GB Ram
    Running OS Lion

Back up all data. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) and erase the startup volume in Disk Utility. Then reinstall OS X and restore your data in Setup Assistant.

  • Can't install OS X Montain Lion; Failed to verify Essentials.pkg: xar_verify failed

As said, I can't install OS X Montain Lion without getting this error message in the log during installation ; Failed to verify Essentials.pkg: xar_verify failed
I've read a lot on the forums and googling this error message, and I've been reading lots of people saying it's a RAM issue. So I recently replaced my RAM from original 1gbx2 to 2gbx2 sticks without any success.
Is there an easy solution for this problem out there? Or is it something else in the hardware that is faulty?
Worth mentioning is; the problem resides with my Macbook 13 inch late 2009 and i'm using a USB stick for the installation
    Thanks in advance,
    Sebastian

Since Mountin Lion does not come on a DVD, did you prepare this DVD yourself?  If so, how did you do it?  Is it a full Mountain Lion installation that was placed on the DVD?
You might want to restart, hold the Option (Alt) key and select the DVD as the boot device, a hard drive that has been formatted will not show since that restart process only shows volumes that are bootable.
    Select Applications, Utilities, Disk Utility.
Select the new Western Digital hard drive.
Select Partition in the DU main window.
Select Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) for the first partition if you want more than one.
    Select from Options, GUID
    Then Apply
Even though you did the format once, do it again incase something is messed up.  Now close DU.
From the DVD ML Utilities you need to select Install Mac OS and point that to the Western Digital hard drive...if your DVD has been properly created it should have no problems installing on the new hard drive.

  • I need to re-install mac os x lion

    Hello,
I installed windows 7 on my imac but when I made it, I remove all other parts including mac os x boot section. I can not find all drivers for windows 7, because of that I want to re-install mac os x lion but I don't have any installation DVD, also I don't have any installation file on my HDD. How can I install mac os x lion again?
    Thank you.

I'm hoping you didn't totally wipe your system, try booting and when you hear the Startup Tone hold down the Option key and choose the Recovery Partition and then install Lion. If you totally erased the drive and the only thing left you will have to try using Lion Recovery & Lion Recovery, OS X Lion: About. If those don't work then your next stop is an Apple Store or AASP for service.

  • When I try to install Lion it tell's me "You can't use this version of the application install mac os x Lion with this version of Mac os x" even though I have the latest update 10.5.8 of Mac os X?

The install icon has this sign on it

You can't install Lion over Leopard. To install Lion, a requirement is Snow Leopard. So you can either upgrade to Snow Leopard first or you can make a bootable Lion install disc and use that to wipe your hard drive and install a fresh copy of Lion.
So to make a disk would require you to purchase Snow Leopard and upgrade to 10.6.8 so you can use the App Store, unless you have access to another computer to download it from with your Apple ID. Remember it is about a 3.4GB download.
    Good Luck

  • Can't re-install Mac OS X Lion

I am not able to start my Macbook Air – I get the grey screen and revolving circle. So …
I am trying to re-install Mac OS X Lion via the Command-R utility on start up.
I am asked for my Apple ID and on entering it I get the message: “This Apple ID has not yet been used with App Store. Please review your account information”
I then press Review and nothing happens.
I have logged into my Apple ID on another comuter and have tried to update bits of information so that perhaps it can believe that it's active but to no avail.
(I would use my Time Machine to restore but I am currently abroad and don't have my Time Machine backup drive)
    Please advise.

  • I have mac OS X 10.5.8, can I upgrade to OS X Lion without going through OS X Snow Leopard?

can I upgrade to OS X Lion without going through OS X Snow Leopard?

    Yes.
Instead of upgrade, you can do fresh install Lion into another partition and so you would have multiboot 10.5.8 and 10.7.
If you wish to use the the exisiting 10.5.8 partition to install 10.7 Lion, you can first create a 10.7 DVD. And use the 10.7 DVD to do installation instead.
Here is how to create 10.7 DVD.
