Can I install only Windows on my Macbook Pro 2009?

Hello All,
For reasons far outwith my control. i.e. I am in the middle of borneo, needing desperatly to get on a full windows machine... I need answers to the following?
I have full gen versions of Windows 7 and MS Office 2010. I want to run these on my 13" MacBook Pro 2009. I know, boot camp, VMware etc are all great. But i can't at this time get those working.
I think, the best option is to just buy a HDD, remove the old one, install fresh copy (of win) onto new HHD.
However, my question is - will this work?
Thanks
Craig

As TheSmokeMonster indicated, you'll need to use either virtualization or BootCamp.  BootCamp prepares your system to allow Windows to be installable on it (it also provides the drives for some of the hardware which may not be found elsewhere).  Virtualization runs in OS X, so that should be a non-issue.  Keep in mind, all firmware updates are only via OS X, so you would not be able to update your firmware unless you have a functioning bootable external OS X volume.
BootCamp does basically give you a full Windows machine... it just allows dual booting between Windows and OS X.

  • CD Boot: memory overflow error! Trying to install Bootcamp / Windows 7 on MacBook Pro 2009 with external superdrive

    Hi all,
I'm trying to install Bootcamp on my machine.
I was running Parallels before but need Bootcamp in order to run heavy software on the PC side (e.g. Rhino/Maxwell/etc).
I have a Macbook Pro 17" from around 2009, running Mountain Lion 10.7.3.
Problem is, my internal CD Drive is broken and doesn't read discs, so it couldn't read the Windows installation disc (Windows Home Premium 7 64 bit - OEM System Builder Pack).
So, I rang Apple to try to fix it and they said it would be cheaper and faster to buy an external SuperDrive.
I explained that I wanted it to install bootcamp and they said, fine.
However when I bought the SuperDrive, it turns out its only supposed to be working with new Macbook Pro with Retina display, and other machines that don't have internal cd drives.
At first it didnt work, but then I found a helpful website which enabled it to work on my machine.
So I went ahead and started installing Windows through the BootCamp Assistant.
It partitioned my hard drive - success!
But then it turned into black screen, with message saying "CDBOOT: Memory overfloor error"
    Help please!!!
I suspect the problem is either:
    a) Old Macbook Pro can't boot from the Windows disk
    or
    b) The Windows OEM version is somehow not designed to work with Mac. I bought it secondhand off a guy, thinking it was the full version, silly thing to do!
Your thoughts and help is seriously appreciated!
Tomorrow I'm going to the Apple Store and also to buy a brand new copy of Windows, I guess.

This has been resolved. It turned out that in spite of the message at the end of installation - "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer restart the installation" Windows was installed successfully but the problem was the Bootcamp drivers, it could not read them(install them) from my original OSX Istall DVD and I thought that that the whole package was not installed successfully. I will copy the intructions here as well since this thread may attract lots of other people with similar problem who may think it was not a good installation. Here you go:
Ok, after 3 sleepness nights I have found a solution and finally have a working Windows 7 Ultimate. I hope this will be helpful for everyone having similar issues and not have to go through the same nightmare.
Right away after logging in Windows for the first time insert the original Snow Leopard Install DVD and if Windows does not read it or install any drivers after clicking on setup.exe do the following:
Right-click on Start » Programs » Accessories » Command Prompt
    Select Run as Administrator
Type cd /d D:, then press Enter
Type cd Boot Camp\Drivers\Apple, then press Enter
    Type BootCamp64.msi, then press Enter
If you do not how to right click before installing the drivers the following:
    Click on Start
Enter cmd in the search box
Instead of hitting the Enter key use Ctrl + Shift + Enter and will open a dialog box
Click Yes at the prompt and you will be running as an administrator.
If you do not have the original install DVD go the this link and follow the instructions(including the ones from the last comment):

how to install only windows 7 on macbook4,1?
i have windows 7 dvd, i want to install windows 7 only and does not want to keep  msc os 10.5.8. currently i do not have any cd or DVD which came with my macbook. So i need to know:
    1- how i install windows 7?
    2- 32bit or 64bit windows?
3- after installing how to get drivers of my macbook?

There is no disc of Mountain Lion, and if there were it would not contain drivers, those  are on your original OSX disc (the one that came with the machine) or you can download them using Boot Camp Assistant.
You will need a 64 bit copy of Windows, OEM or retail.

  • How can I install Sims 2 on my Macbook Pro?

I can't figure out how to install Sims 2 on my Macbook Pro.. Anyone know how?

That game is over seven years old.  It can't run on any mac in OS X that has 10.7 or later installed.  Are you trying to install in OS X or in a Windows partition?  Also, what happens when it tries to install?  If it mentions something about "PPC", it can't run in OS X. 10.7 or later.

  • Can't install mac os x on macbook pro anymore(now i have windows 7 on it)

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro, there was mac os x 10.6.4 on it, after that I installed windows 7 on it, because i wanted a clean instal, but I couldn't because a kernel panic when i booted from the dvd mac os x 10.5(that I received when i bought the macbook pro), I also have a 10.6 snow leopard dvd. So I installed windows 7.
Now I can't install mac os x because of the kernel panic, I also tried a lot of dvd that i borrowed from friends, and I also bought a new mac os x snow leopard dvd ...
the error is just: you need to restart your computer.....
I tried also some key combinations on startup like: Command-Option-P-R keys,Command-Option-O-F,startup from dvd: pressing C on startup, pressing D on startup, pressing option on startup.
I searched evrywhere but didnt found a solution
Nothing helped so can someone help me please?
Now i have just a windows 7, i realy want mac os x back, its a lot easier in the class...
PS: I am a noob, so dont explain it hard please

You are just throwing things that have no bearing and can cause trouble, there is no Open Firmware, Intel based Macs use EFI, OF was part of the older G4/G5 and PowerMacs.
Unplug everything but keyboard and boot from 10.6 DVD.
Boot from Windows 7 DVD if you want and instead of installing, format the entire hard drive as NTFS and then try OS X DVD.
But first and foremost.... where is your backups? do you have OS X on external drive? how about putting OS X on external hard drive?
And you're sure this is a kernel panic? a prohibitory sign maybe?

  • Can't install mac os x on macbook pro because of kernel panic: IO-APIC

    Hello guys,
i have a macbook pro, that i formated with a windows 7 dvd, now i ONLY have a windows 7 on my macbook pro.(I wanted a clean install with os x before i puted windows 7, but i coudnt because each time i tried to boot from os x dvd i got a kernel panic, thats why i formated the entire hard driver and puted windows 7)
But now i realy want the mac os x, i really tried evrything, evry dvd, evry key combination nothing worked.the error i get is: yo need to restart your computer ....
I alo cant acces the hardware test....
nobody could help me on the forums...
Today i tried to boot from a linux bootcd, then i got the next error:
    mp-bios bug:8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
kernel panic: not syncing: IO-APIC +timer doesnt work.
As you can see the problem is apic, when i press noapic the linux starts up, so i think if I could disable the apic before starting to boot from the os x dvd should help...
on windows computers yo can disable the apic in bios, does anybody have an idea how i can do it on a macbook pro?
or maybe other ideas that can repair the bug?

You are working ages on a mac os and dont know how to fix a problem like this...
It's far from a common problem. I've never seen anyone post an IO-APIC issue before. Doing a search for your exact error message turns up all kinds of links for people trying to install Linux, Ubuntu, or some other non Windows OS on their PC. This thread is the only one I found related to a Mac.
    Just a note on this:
i can get a mac os x snow leopard on a windows PC
You do realize that's illegal, right? The user license clearly states that the Mac OS is to be installed on Mac hardware only. Not to mention that even if you do somehow manage to get OS X installed on PC hardware, it's almost a 100% certainty it will run badly.
and tried to press option, c,d while booting(the dvd os x was in there)
Just pressing? Try again, insert the OS X install disk and restart. When you hear the startup chime, immediately press and hold the C key until it is clear you've started up to the DVD. If this doesn't work, then that kind of brings this up:
oh one more thing: i was also getting the kernel panic before formatting the previous mac os x
Kernel panics are usually hardware related. What do you have plugged into the laptop? If anything, unplug them before attempting to boot to the OS X install disk. If there's nothing plugged into any of the USB, Ethernet or FireWire ports, the it's most likely bad RAM. You'll have to bring the Mac in for service to get that checked out under warranty.

  • Clean install of windows 7 on macbook pro

    hello to you all ,
i have macbook pro with clean install of win 7
i have to say that this is a good operation system
my question is : can i manage to work with the multi touch pad ?
i mean can i get all of the mouse feature like zoom in and out
    or scroll
can someone please tell me the answer ?
    thanks in advance ....

To add on to Kappy's good advice, there was an update to the drivers on 11/19/09 (after Snow Leopard's launch) that says it offers trackpad improvements.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/bootcampdriversu pdate22forwindows.html
One thing of note, it only mentions Windows XP and Windows Vista. Technically, Apple has not officially announced support for Windows 7 via Boot Camp. Although as Kappy stated, they have stated that they will be releasing compatible drivers by the end of the year (which is in 8 days). From my experience and I'm sure others, Win7 works just fine via Boot Camp with a few minor little issues (nothing that's a deal breaker).
Here's a good sub-forum discussion group for Win7 and Boot Camp, in fact, probably a better forum to ask this question - http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237

  • Can't install mountain lion on my macbook pro

    Hey everyone,
I have a serious issue since my last senior project my MacBook Pro 15" has been too hard to deal with it hangs a lot and I can't install any updates with out formatting my Mac and have a rough time with it lately I wanted to update my macbook to the latest version which is 10.8.5 and whenever I download that update from the App Store my Mac won't install it then it starts to hang and even hang on the start ups so I formatted it all over again and now when it reaches to the nearly end of the installation like 6 mins left it stuck forever and it writes 2hrs left... I would really be happy if someone can find an end of this drama cause am sick of it

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How many times can I install mountain lion on my macbook pro?

My Macbook pro came with lion pre-installed. However, I bought at a time that allowed me to update to mountain lion for free. Therefore, I wanted to know if I will have to pay to re-download mountain lion on my Macbook pro if I have to restore the system to its factory settings?

No, since you have already "purchased" (even if for free) 10.8 on the App Store with your AppleID, you own it, so you can reinstall as much as you want.
