Can I install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on Windows 2000 Professional

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have Windows 2000 professional edition loaded on my PC and I'm not sure what it allows. Can I load Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition of the database on this operating system, or do I need to load windows 2000 server software.
Thanks
Ryan

Its a problem with oracle and pentium 4 processors actually. The solution involves renaming or deleting the symcjit.dll in the 8i installation package after you've copied the whole Cd onto your HDD!
I've tried this and it install OK, with a few errors along the way, now I can't get the apache server working, nor on the 9i AS that I've installed as well. Let me know if you get anything useful please?

  • Can't install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on Pentium4

    I have Pentium4 with 256MB SDRAM and Windows 2000 server installed on it. I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition but the setup doesn't run at all.
    Is this a problem of O.S. or the processor?

    I'm not Oracle support however I had the same issue and this is what I found.
    Platforms Affected
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Any platform that uses the Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the Sun JRE and Symmantec JIT will encounter this problem. Windows NT, Windows 2000 and NetWare platforms are confirmed to be affected.
    Description
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    When installing Oracle Products with the Oracle Universal Installer (8.1.x) on machines, the installer hangs.
    Likelihood of Occurrence
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Any platform that uses the Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the Sun JRE and Symmantec JIT will encounter this problem. Windows NT, Windows 2000 and NetWare platforms are confirmed to be affected.
    Possible Symptoms
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The failure typically is that the affected application simply terminates.
    Workaround
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Not only will OUI be affected by this bug, most of the post-install
    configuration tools will also be affected. Running these tools with
    "-nojit" specified will avoid the hang, but it is not simple to specify "-nojit" for some of the products.
    The following workaround works for the Windows operating system:
    a. Copy only the install directory from the CD to the hard disk, say,
    e:\temp.
    b. Open oraparam.ini and make the following modifications (Assuming CD
    drive is f:)
    * Change the "SOURCE=" line to use the full path to the CD instead of a relative path. (i.e., SOURCE=f:\stage\products.jar)
    * Change the "JRE_LOCATION" line to use the full path to the CD instead of a relative path. (i.e.,JRE_LOCATION=f:\stage\Components\oracle\swd\jre\1.1.7\1\DataFiles\Expanded)
    * Change the "OUI_LOCATION" line to use the full path to the CD instead of a relative path. (i.e.,OUI_LOCATION=f:\stage\Components\oracle\swd\oui\1.6.0.9.0\1\DataFiles\Expanded
    * Change the "JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS" line to add "-nojit" as the first
    argument. (i.e., JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=-nojit -ms16m -mx32m)
    ^^^^^^
    * Other entries should remain the same
    c. Launch setup.exe from the temporary location on your hard drive
    (i.e.,e:\temp\install\win32\setup.exe). This will use the modified
    oraparam.ini and pick up the information from the CD since the
    absolute locations are specified.
    Choose a Custom install and choose not to create a database during the
    install. This way, the Database Configuration Assistant will not be
    launched during installation.
    The Net8 Configuration Assistant will still be launched, and there is
    no way to suppress it. You will need to kill the Net8 Configuration Assistant if it hangs due to the bug. The installation still will have been successful, and you can run the DBCA and NetCA after installation.
    To kill NetCA if it hangs during installation:
    In the "Configuration Tools" window, highlight the "Net8 Configuration
    Assistant" and click "Stop". If that does not work, look for the most recent JRE process using the Task Manager, and kill it manually. NOTE: the OUI itself will also have a jre process. Be sure to kill the one with the most recent date, which should be the jre process being used for Net8CA, not the one for OUI itself.
    After killing the configuration tools and continuing through the installation to the "End of Installation" screen, you should modify the configuration tools to use "-nojit", then call the appropriate tools from the Start Menu.
  • Can't install Oracle 8.1.7 Personal Edition on Windows ME
    I am trying to install "Oracle 8.1.7 Personal Edition for Windows 98" on Windows ME. I can't install it. During the install on the Oracle Universal Intaller, on the part where it asks for the Source and Destination, after I click "Next" to install, it gives me a error message: "Invalid staging area. There are no top level components for Windows 95 available for install from this staging area". So I can't proceed with the installation.
    The computer I am using is a Pentium 3, 700mhz, 128mb Ram.
    On my other computer, it is a Dell Dimension Pentium 4, 1.3 GHz, 128mb ram. When I attempt to install it, while running the D:\setup.exe, before it even loads the install program, it gives me the error message: "Jrew has caused an error in JAVAI.DLL. Jrew will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer". Restarting my computer does not solve the problem.
    Can anyone help me out, I really would appreciate it. Thank you.
    There is supposedly a fix for this 'stage error' but I tried one of them and it doesn't work. What i have found is that you either create a dual boot Win ME/(98 or 2000 pro) or dump ME as I did and run 98 or 2000 instead. It is painful but unfortunately, seeming necessary. I made it a bit less painful by using Symantec Works to back up all of my other loaded APPS (and Registry entries) Most reloaded to 98 even though they were running in ME.
    Good luck.
  • Can't install Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition on Windows 2000 Professional SP3
  • Unable to install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on a Dell Dimension 4400
    I just bought a Dell Dimension 4400 computer. I tried many times to install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on it. My operating system is Windows XP Professional. It seems nothing to do with the Operating system because I installed the database on a HP computer with Windows XP professional. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    There are many documented issues regarding P4 processors with [OUI] Oracle Universal Installer for Oracle 8.1.x
    Oracle Metalink has some recommended patches and etc but I can only comment what is working for me. Keep in mind I only install these clients, I don't work on databases that actually use them. So if there is another piece that is dependant on the java version shipped with the cd, this may not solve everything.
    Workaround #1 [To install and be able to run OUI at a later time]
    1.) Install the Sun Java Runtime 1.2.2.11 [http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/jre/download-windows.html].
    a) Make sure that the system path enviroment (Properties of My Computer, not inside a cmd window) has c:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.2\bin and c:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.2\bin\classic before any Oracle related path. Don't have any other JRE in the path.
    2.) Copy the cd to a network source or local directory and do a search for all "symcjit.dll" and rename "symcjit.old"
    3.) Run the installer, this should install the client
    Workaround #2 [Just to install.. not for mass deployment]
    If you have access to an Oracle 9i CD, use the OUI 2 installer that comes with that and redirect the "source" to where your 8.1.7 client is.
    Intel says there is a bug in oracle's OUI as well other swing based programs. The solution is to copy the CD to local drive and add -nojit as first parameter to JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS e.g. JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS="-nojit -mx32m"
    This will enable OUI to run. Even after installing oracle Net80 conf. asst won't start due to same reason.
    Go to HOME\admin\tools\ and edit netca.cl and netasst.cl to add same -nojit before -classpath.
    Do this for every tool that gives this prob such DBA studio...
  • Can we install oracle client over oralce xpress edition??
    hello....
    Actually i am instally oracle 11g r2 express edition. Over that i have to install oracle client to meed my software requirement.
    Can i do so in oracle XE.
    for 11.2 XE Supported client versions are 11.2.0 and 12.1.0. (Doc ID 207303.1)
    If "Supported" means Oracle will support you, then yes, but all versions from 9.2 onwards will work (OP didn't specify its software requirement).
  • How to install oracle enterprise edition on windows 2000
    I have tried installing oracle 8.04 enterprise edition for NT on windows 2000 for several times. But it always missed listening on some serives.
    could anyone help me?
    Thank you!
    I am installing Oracle 816 on Win 2K Server. Its installing everything except I am getting error while in the
    process of creating Instance and Initializing it.
    I am getting
    Oracle Database Configuration Assistant Alert
    "ORA-12638: Credential retrieval failed"
    while in the process of copying database files and initializing database. And the process is halting
    at this point with showing 85% completion. Do you think any conflict between OS files between Win 4.0
    This is happening only on fresh Install of Win 2K.
  • How to install Oracle 9i EE on a clustered server (Windows 2000)
    I need to install Oracle 9i on Clustered server (Windows 2000 Server)with Oracle Fail safe. There are 2 Nodes and one Clustered disk with RAID 5.
    The documentation from Oracle is NOT very helpful as it does not specify the installation of Oracle DB on the 2 nodes.Where will the control files reside etc for each node.
    Any inputs will be highly appreciated
    Hi,
    reply to my own question:
    In the docs provided with the downloads for Oracle Database Server 9i x64, I found that this version requires either
    - Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition for 64-Bit Itanium 2 Systems
    or
    - Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition for 64-Bit Itanium 2 Systems
    So I guess, the only X64 platform being supported under Windows Server 2003 (both Datacenter / Enterprise Editions) is Itanium CPUs ...
    ... though this is not (!!!) clearly stated in the download link (other/newer versions are listed more precisely - I guess it's a matter of an old link: no Intel Xeon / AMD Opterons were available (???) when Oracle 9i database server was published).
    So I'll give it a try with 10g database server ;-)))
  • Can we install Oracle 8i and 10g on the same windows server?
    I would like to install the Oracle server 8i and 10g on the same windows server? Is this possible.
    Forgive me if this question is already asked.
    Thanks in advance!
    Jay.
    WHICH Windows version? (There's more than one). It would be useful to be a little bit more precise (NT,2000,XP,2003, 32/64 bit) .
    For NT and 2000 it is possible to have both 8i and 10g, for XP and 2003 there's no support for 8i at all.
