Can I Install OS X from a freind's Install Disk?

Hello,
I lost the Install disk that came with my computer. I am Running 10.5.5, but need to reinstall the operating system due to a problem partitioning with boot camp. I tried starting the installation with the install disk of my friend (OS X 10.5.2) but it gives me an error message: OS X cannot install on this machine. Does the install disk know where it came from, and thus will only work on his machine? Can I fake it out? Can I just use it to run an installation from a Time Machine backup (what I'm trying to do anyways?

yes, those disks are hardware specific and won't work on a different model computer.
Can I fake it out?
no.

no. what you should do if you've lost your original disks is call apple care and ask for replacement disks. this is a routine matter and they do it all the time.

Use separate Apple IDs on each device.

How can I get the photos from iPhoto copied to a disk in the order I want??

To ensure a custom ordering, sort the files in an album and rename the files with a sequentially numbered filename.
    File > Export > Version/Originals
    Then use "Filename > Sequential"
or "Filename > Album name with index"

It should only do that if you hold down the T key at startup.  Otherwise the PRAM battery is probably near death, or the T key needs to be cleaned so it doesn't think it is being held down.  To clean the keyboard properly, you will probably need to bring it in for service.

How do I install Premiere Element 10 from a download (not a disk)? When I open the installation wizard, it tells me that tthis will remove the program from my computer. Why would I want to do that?  I'm afraid to try it!

Is it possible you have already installed the software?  Can you find the program listed under Start>All Programs or your Applications folder depending on your operating system?

  • Installing Windows XP from USB - no system installed already

    Hi all,
I am a newbie here, so please bear with me. I recently purchased a Lenovo x121e ThinkPad. It did NOT come with an operating system on it. I thought it would be a pretty simple job to install Windows XP from a USB Flash Drive. Apparently not!
Would anyone be able to give me instructions on how to prepare the bootable USB drive and then the steps that should be taken after that.
Thanks in advance for your help.

The Google suggest this: Tutorial: Installing XP Home/Professional from a Flash Drive
I haven't tried it.  It's (relatively) easy to do with Win 7, not so much with XP.

  • Can I use a backup from my Bookpro to install on my iMac.

I had some HD troubles, and after Apple put in a new one, there seems to be some files out of whack. For example, I have a folder in my HD Directory called Base System 53829, which contains no data. Also, my "User Guides and Information" folder is missing, but there is an alias.
Things like Apple loops are not in the same directory as they are on my BookPro.
Can I use the backup I made from my BookPro on my Mac? Or would it be better to use target disk mode to transfer the proper setup?

Thanks a lot for your time.
I thought the only thing that matters is whether they are both Intel core2 duo, and both already running Leopard.
Anyway, from what I understand in the link you provided, if the OS version is NEWER on the computer that the backup comes from, then it will work.
My BookPro (Jan 2009) is almost 2 years newer that my iMAc (late 2007), so cloning and installing my complete BookPro HD, and installing it on my older iMac should work.
    Correct?

  • Can I use SnowLeopard discs from my MBP to install on old MB ??? Y / N ???

    Hello,
This is simply a question of permissions: Assuming Snow Leopard is compatible with my old MB (2gb mem., 2ghz Intel Core Duo, 80gb HD), can I take the discs that just came with my new MacBook Pro and use them to install Snow Leopard on my old machine (Currently Running 10.4.11 Tiger)? Is that allowable or is it a big NO NO from APPLE's point of view (i.e. am I supposed to buy a separate copy, or do I now own what I've got on one machine outright-enough to install on a second?)...
    Answers appreciated.
    Cheers,
    DB.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Yes, it is a no-no from a license standpoint, as it is only a single-user license.
Also, be aware that disks that ship with your computer are hardware specific and should not be used to try to install on different hardware.

  • Can't see Apple HD from XP after bootcamp install

    Hello,
I've just installed XP home edition using boot camp. I used a 35gig partition Fat32. If I'm in Leopard, I can see the XP partition. If I'm in XP, I can't see the apple partition. I have the apple partition set up as shared. Is there a way to view both so while working in XP, I can save files to the apple HD?
    Thanks for your help.
    Paul

    pspmhofer:
You are not able to read/write to the OSx partition from Windows because the OSx partition is formatted in HFS and therefore Windows cannot access it.
To be able to gain access to the OSx partition from Windows and retain the ability to read and write, you will need to download and install [Macdrive|http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive>. It is not free and the pricing information in on the link above.

  • How can I delete an item from Keychain the dealer installed?

I found that he installed an access in Keychain to my Time Capsule showing its password when he replaced my HD. When I try to delete it I am denied on my password. When I try to create a new Keychain my password is denied, so I cannot create a new Keychain and delete the old one— if that would work in this situation. I have some other issues with this dealer, an old one predating the Apple Stores. I don't like to go back to him to find out how I can get him out of my computer.

I was able access the TC set-up in Airport Utility after a hard reset, then powering it down, restarting it along with the cable modem and iMac. “Public” was accepted as a password but later a Systems Keychain password was called for and denied. I have recently lost the ability to access any Systems’ password. I tried unsuccessfully to change these passwords, to change them to the present login password. (They are the passwords in effect when I brought the iMac in for a new HD. They seemed to accept the change, saved it, but when I checked back they were unchanged. Seemingly there is another level of password above mine. But Systems have stopped accepting my password: when entered my password a pop-up appears, “kcproxy wants to use ‘System’ keychain,” enter keychain password. My present Keychain password fails and a pop-up appears, “Access . . . restricted.”
TC was on the way to being reconfigured until this Key Chain problem again blocked it. Since I know the passwords that are in them I know something else is involved. The dealer who installed my new hard drive put a password entry in my Keychain System file without my permission, programmed so that it can’t be removed or changed. This does bear a fairly trojan-like semblance. This program has disabled my Systems file when I attempted to remove the entry. It made the TC, bought 1/4/12, unusable. I am not sure that Apple is on the hook for this; I will check in with them. If only I could access the TC I could probably exchange the supporting data. . . .
No one has responded to my case. I’ve followed the related discussions. I turn on FileVault--Keychain is in the home folder--but the master password was of no use. I’ve turned it off. If no on has a bright idea, I’ll check in with Apple on the guarantee.

  • Why can't I view pics from sd card without installing?

Why cant I view pics from an sd card without copying onto iPad?

Um, because the camera connection kit is not a viewer, but rather permits downloading pictures from a SD card directly to your iPad.

  • How to install OS X from .dmg onto a hard disk partition? - ALL LEGAL

    Hi there,
I have a .dmg file with Mac OS X on it. How to I install it onto a partition I have created on my Mac's hard drive?
It is legal, don't worry, its dev software.
    Thanks!

    5. Definition of Confidential Information. You agree that the Pre-Release Software and any information concerning the Pre- Release Software ( _*including its nature and existence*_, features, functionality, and screen shots), the Seeding Tools, and any other information disclosed by Apple to you \[...], will be considered and referred to collectively in this Agreement as “Confidential Information.”
Note the emphasis above, provided by me. Mentioning that you have pre-release software is clearly sharing the information that it exists, and thus a violation of that agreement. How Apple chooses to proceed on such a revelation on their forums is up to them.
As to your question, if the pre-release software is given to you as a .dmg, I'm sure it is also accompanied by some kind of basic instructions as to what you're supposed to do with it. You'd better find those instructions, since nobody else who has access to that pre-release software is likely to want to jeopardize future invitations by answering you on a public forum.
