Yes, you can. The type of storage on which you install is not relevant, as long as it is connected to an 'internal' storage control. Windows licensing restricts its installation on external/portable disks. Windows-to-go is the only legal means to do that.

If your computer with an internal optical drive you must use that to install Windows in a Boot Camp partition.
If you are having problems with Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox virtual machines you should visit their respective sites for assistance.

How can I install winxp to bootcamp on imac with bad optical drive?

I have a mid-2007 20" aluminum Intel-based iMac and I'm having trouble getting a clean install of MacOS10.5.8 and Win XP (through Bootcamp) on a new drive.
The problem stems from the fact that I have no internal optical drive. My Superdrive began acting up a while ago (couldn't recognize, read from, or write to DVD). I replaced the drive, but the problem persisted. Calling Apple Support, they determined (guessed?) the problem was the logic board, and, as the machine is out of warranty, isn't worth replacing. No big deal - I've been using an external USB optical drive when needed.
However, my hard drive is beginning to experience issues (SMART Failure), and I want to reinstall everything MacOS, Bootcamp/Win XP on a clean new drive. The problem is that I cant resinstall Win XP to Bootcamp without an internal drive (which seems unlikely to ever work). I've tried creating a bootable USB key with the XP installation files going through the Bootcamp installation process using the WintoFlash/rEFIt method, but to no avail (won't recognize boot from USB).
Is it possible to remove the internal hard drive, boot from MacOS (10.5.8) on an external drive, and connect the optical drive to the sATA port where the internal drive was? Or is there a second sATA port on these logic boards? Or can I somehow connect the USB optical drive in a way that the iMAC thinks it's internal? I'm not afraid of digging into the iMAC (changed HDD and Superdrive already).
Is there anyway to test the pATA connection on my logic board to find out if it's really the problem? If it's not, maybe I can install WinXP on a second Windows formated drive, to take the space of the internal Superdrive.
There must be some good ideas out there somewhere. Barring that, my only other option is to use Parallels and take the performance hit that comes with running a virtual machine. UGH!

Actually, when I followed that link, one of the related links in More Like This was a real find! An actual download of Aperture, albeit a trial, but that would have solved my problem too. I tested it and although it's embeded in a support article, the link to the trial version of Aperture still works.

If you have a Late 2012 iMac (without a built-in SuperDrive), you can use a USB drive to install Windows with Boot Camp and you shouldn't have any problem

I'm about to take delivery of my new iMac (late 2013) with the following specs :
27-inch Core i7 3.5 GHz with 16gb RAM
256 GB flash storage (pure SSD, NOT Fusion)
I've googled and found that some say that Windows cannot be installed on the Fusion Drive due to the Fusion Drive containing an SSD portion.
I would like to install Windows 7 - is this possible to install on the 256 GB flash (SSD) drive ? I'm not buying a Fusion Drive with this iMac, just a pure 256 GB SSD/flash drive. Or must I install Windows on another separate, non-SSD drive ?

Unless you do high end gaming or very intense
3D graphics work, it will be much easier to simply
install a product like VMWare Fusion
(http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/) or
Parallels Desktop Mac
(http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/)
and create a virtual machine. Read up on these sites
to understand how a virtual machine works.
The advantage of this approach, the "PC" simply runs
as another window in OSX. No rebooting required.
If you really need the full performance of the iMac's
graphics for your Windows use, you can dual boot
by creating a new partition on the drive via Bootcamp
and install windows there. (http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/).
Be for warned, only Win7 and Win8 are supported by this

Can I Install Windows 7 On 27" Imacs (36 of Them) With The Upgrade Disk?

So basically, we have a 36 station iMac 27" lab, with 1 Mac Pro and 15 2.8 duo and 2.53 i5 MBP's.
We purchased the Windows 7 upgrade disk(by we I mean the "lead" tech guy)which normally shouldn't be a problem.
However as many of you know, the GPU drivers don't quite work out with 7, so you need to follow the workaround provided by Apple. Apple needs you to have the regular install disk that is recognized by Bootcamp.
All we can do is set it to start from disk after XP is installed.
So can we do anything? Is Apple going to update bootcamp so that we can just flat out install it? In the meantime, is there a workaround, can we trick bootcamp into reading an upgrade disk.

i dunno about upgrade disc. but i upgraded from windows vista to windows 7 ultimate (32bit and 64bit with clean install) with a full installation disc with upgrade option selected. there is 1 issue i faced when installing, fooling me that its a failed attempt at first. maybe this is the problem most of us is having. i have boot camp 3.0 installed in fact.. boot camp 3.1 is not for me. i don need that. this is the problem while installing, the screen will just go blank after the windows 7 finishes install... but the main thing is i can still press the caps lock on and off. 1st i thought it is a failed attempt. to resolve this, enter ur username (actually windows is asking for ur username), and press enter... now hard restart the imac (press and hold the power button). right when the white screen disappear, press f8 button for optional boot selection. choose "safe mode", and wait. if a screen appear saying that the installation cannot continue with safe mode. restart the imac until u reached the blank screen again where u have to insert ur username. i did this actually, i did a lot of clicking and enter, and entering my username. and restart the thing again, press f8 to safe mode. until i go into safe mode successfully. when i am in safe mode, i go to device manager and deleted the graphic card (mine radeon hd4850), in fact that is the windows driver for hd4850 and restart the imac. this time i am 100% sure i can login to windows 7. when in windows 7, just update the device driver from imac 27" DVD from boot camp, and restart. u have to update the sound and bluetooth driver too in order to have proper sound card and magic mouse operation.

Best way to install Windows 8 on an iMac with 1tb Fusion drive

I just ordered my first iMac. Not my first mac, I have owned numerous Mac laptops in the past but am finally ready to make the switch for my main desktop .
Now I need to installed windows 8.1 because I need to run visual studio. That is literally the only app I need to run.
Ordered with the below specs:
27" imac
i7 processor
1tb fusion drive
16gb ram.
I am thinking of two options:
1) use parallels or vmware fusion and create a 200gb windows virtual machine and give this machine 6gb ram (4gb is recommend by more couldn't hurt). since the fusion drive works at a block level, my windows OS and vs should parts of the VM file should get moved to the SSD as I will be using it a lot. my main goal is max performance. i will be working on metro apps (not windows phone apps). any recommendation on which is better? parallels or vmware? stability and performance is key. i don't need any fancy UI integration and i won't run any games. happy to run windows in fullscreen mode.
2) create a 200gb partition and run bootcamp. cleary more stable but will it be faster than above because i am assuming the ssd caching will not working here?
per mircorosft website they give instructions for both options above, but i am looking for realworld experience in what will get be most stability in terms of network IO (working on UPNP apps so need stable network bridging) and then performance is key.
HDD size is not a big deal for me as most of my media lives in my synology NAS.

bootcamp will be faster but the only place you will notice is if you play new 3d games on diwndows

Unable to install Windows on an 2010 iMac with home-made Fusion Drive

I've been very happy using mi iMac eversince I installed the SSD alongside the HDD. Only recently I tried to install Windows 7 but it doesn't seem to work. The installer runs, it seems as though Windows is installing but it doesn't ever seem to be able to boot. I've tried countless times. Everytime it boots to Windows it shows nothing but just a black screen with the cursor blinking at the top left corner.
Now, when I home-made the Fusion Drive the Mac OS was only 10.8.2 or older and I know that with 10.8.3 Apple has made improvements towards boot camp and especially the 3TB HDDs. I wonder if this could have anything to do.
Anyway, please enlighten me as to what is it that I need to do to make it work. I've been reading something about the position in which the Windows partition resides compared to GUID and EFI but honestly I have just the tiniest idea about all that. Just for the record, the following is what shows in the Terminal after diskutil list command:

Hello again, by reading a couple of posts I learnt the steps and so, using an external OS I repartitioned the two internal drives making sure the Windows partition wasn't part of the Fusion Drive. I was very excited as I was sure it would work and went ahead and started the Win7 installation even before the MacOS was restored into the iMac.
No good news though. The installer run as expected however, when the time came for the iMac to boot from the newly installed Windows7, all I saw was a blank screen and a blinking dash at the top left corner of the screen.
Lastly, this morning I woke up to see that my old system was fully restored from Time Machine external back up. I also leart that using the Boot Camp Assistant I could remove the Windows partition that I created on Terminal from the external OS, which was surprising, I honestly thought that that partitioning arrangement would be off-limits for the Boot Camp Assistant.
Still, I haven't been succesfull installing Windows back to my Mac, can anybody help?

I have been through somany tutorials and youtube channels. some of them are telling to unmount or editing info.plist file. I have tried everything. But no use.

this may not work depending on what changes you've already made
find a +8gb USB2 only flash drive and disconnect everything except the kb, mouse from your machine
restart boot camp assistant, choose option to delete windows if available
PRAM reset
open disk utility, confirm that you only have 1 HD partition ('mac HD' unless you renamed it), repair permissions TWICE
DL a new ISO from the link below
once DL is complete, insert USB2 flash drive, open boot camp assistant and choose all 3 options (create, download, install) - make sure you select the new ISO

Hi, I got a problem hehe. When I use bootcamp to creat a partition, the windows installation does not reconize the partition. The only parition I can install on is a "patition1" with 131Go... But my hard drive is a 250Go and the parition I created is 32Go so I dont know where they took this 131Go.
Anyway I found that when I creat a big parition... suppose 100Go the Windows installation reconize it. A 100go parition is in NTFS and a 32Go one is in FAT32.
So the question is: How to creat a 32Go NTFS partition with OS X.5.1 or any way to install windows XP on my macbook.

I have a 24 inch white imac running Snow Leaopard. I'm trying to install windows 7. It will go through the process but will crash to the blue screen in the final stages of the setup. It then restarts the computer and it goes to the option screen of safe boot etc.
