Can I install Windows 8.1 as Bootcamp partition from OSX Mountain Lion using a USB stick?

I have the following:
Bootable USB stick with Windows 8.1 - 64 bit
MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.5 - it's probably 3-4 years old.
The Bootcamp partition currently has Windows 7 installed.
I want to know whether I can install Windows 8.1 from a USB stick into a Bootcamp partition. Apple's article on the topic refers to Bootcamp 5.1, but my OSX install has Bootcamp 5.0 - I am assuming 5.1 comes with the Mavericks version.  I don't want to upgrade to Mavericks because I am running out of space as it is on the OSX partition.
Thus my question. So can I?

Your laptop has a DVD drive, right? If so you need to burn your ISO to a disc, will not work off USB

Can I Install Windows 7 on my portable HDD from Mountain lion ? And how i need to do it?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Because of a Microsoft restriction, Windows can't be installed on an external drive (there are workarounds, but you need Windows). Apart from that, Boot Camp only works with the hard drive where you have installed OS X, so you can't use it to install Windows on an external drive

  • HT3986 Can I install Windows 7 on Mac OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion?

I have Mac OS X v10.8 Mountain lion and i need to install windows 7 in my mac...
    Please help me!

Yes, you can install Windows 7 on Mountain Lion.
    You have two options:
1- Run Windows 7 through a virtual machine such as Parallels or VMWare.
2- Dual boot your Mac through bootcamp.
In any case, you will need a valid and original Windows 7 installer DVD (or image).
Since you asked under bootcamp, I will give some details about is below.
First, as suggested in bootcamp, I would suggest you to take a backup just in case. To install Windows, you have to change the partioning of your harddrive from GUID (default apple) to Master Boot Record and though it should be seamless, there can be problems occasionally.
Bootcamp is located under /Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app. Make ready your Windows 7 installation disk (either insert the disc to your DVD drive or mount the image) and run Boot Camp Assistant. Follow the instructions, they should be pretty easy to follow. At some point you will have to change the partitioning of your hard drive and create another partition for Windows. Notice that if your hard drive has too much fragmentation, you might not be able to create a new partition without either running a defragmenter first or reformatting the hard drive. However, I do not want to overkill you with information, so first try to follow Boot Camp assistant and let me know if you are stuck at a particular stage.
    Good luck!

  • Can I install Windows XP SP1 with Bootcamp on my new Mac Mini 2011 i7 ?

Can I install Windows XP SP1 with Bootcamp on my new Mac Mini 2011 i7 ?

Baiscally if your Mini came with Lion Pre-installed new then No you can't use XP.
The Lion installed computers no longer support XP OR Vista via Apple's Boot Camp.
For one thing Apple only supported XP with SP2 in order to install it on pre Lion computers.
If the Mini had come pre-installed new with say 10.6 then you could have installed XP and still of been able to upgrade to Lion without any issues as you already have the drivers for XP installed. Lion only has the drivers for W7.

  • I have recently installed windows XP on my bootcamp partition. I am in need for the drivers and what not so that it will run effectivly and the bootcamp assistant canot find the "Windows Support Sofware" Can anyone help me find it manually?

As the title has stated, I have recently installed Windows XP on my Bootcamp Partition. I am in need of the "Windows Support Software". I am assumeing that is the information that has the Drivers and what not that allow me o properly use my Mac with windows. If anyone can help me locate this inforamtion i would be greatly.... Greatfull.
P.S. The bootcamp assistant is telling me that the Windows Support Sofware canot be found.

You both would have had correct awnsers, but i have a Macbook that is close to three years old. And i can't seem to find my Disc. The only reason i haven't ordered a new one in case of emergencies is I plan on upgrading to the new OS in less then a month.

  • Installing Windows 8.1 with bootcamp, partition issues.

So I am trying to install windows 8.1 onto my MBP running the latest 10.9.2 operating system. It took a while to get the HD to successfully partition, however when I finally got it working, upon booting from the USB drive I got this error message
windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk has an mbr partition table windows can only be installed to GPT disks
Is there any way to change the partition table or to fix this?
I just tried restoring the partition to one, verifiying and repairing the disk in recovery mode, then re-running boot camp, issue persists.
    running late 2011 15" MBP

Well, when you start the computer you should press ALT to show the boot manager. With Windows 8 and 8.1 (for Windows 7 there's not this problem) there should be three different icons: the OS X one, and then two called Wininstall (or something like that) and the other is similar but there should be written something like "EFI Boot".
Well, don't choose the EFI Boot one and you should be fine.
If you choose the first one the Windows installer format the Bootcamp partition correctly, and then you can start the procedure.

    Dear friends
I had brought this Mac book pro 15 inch retinal display and windows 8.1 and then I left to India my home place for vacation now my problem is during flight transit at Paris CDG. For flight change. My luggage got lost and I had to leave for India. On reaching I waited for 6 days daily going to the Mumbai airport and enquiry but now I am stuck I can't work using windows software s for designing engg.
Can someone tell me a better way how can I install windows if I don't have the driver CDs?
Thanks in advance.  Sb sob sob
    Pl. help. Thanks

Reinstall OSX using the online recovery.
Then use Boot Camp Assistant. One of the Boot Camp Assistant menu items is download the Windows Support Software (drivers). Make sure you follow the Boot Camp instructions.
Or, Reinstall OSX using the online recovery.
Then install a virtual machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox. Then install Windows in the virtual machine.
You can use either Boot Camp or a virtual machine to install Windows. Neither method requires any driver cds.

  • ITunes 10.7 won't install on my Macbook Pro which is running OSX Mountain Lion

    Hi,
I've been trying all day to get my iPhone 5 to connect to my iTunes so I can sync my music etc.
First thing, when I connected to my MacBook Pro it says "The iPhone “David's iPhone” cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 10.7 or later. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."
So I downloaded iTunes 10.7 but when I attempt to install it I get "The installation failed.  The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail."
I am on OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.
Can anyone suggest what I might have to do to get this to work?  I've even attempted to download OSX Update 10.8.2 but I get the same installation error.
    Can someone please help!
    Thanks

It could be a transient problem with the network or the server that fixes itself after some time for no apparent reason. It may just work if you try again later.
Also, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.

  • I can't install windows 8.1 on bootcamp

It downloaded as WindowsSetupBox.exe which is not compatible with bootcamp. Is there a way to get a legal ISO version of windows 8.1 or perhaps another way to install it?
    MY SPECS:
Late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15" (got it like 4 days ago)
    Geforce GT 750m
2.6GHz Intel i7 quad core processor
    16GB Memory
    500GB Hard Drive

You need to run that file on a windows machine.
It will ask you for your product key.
As you progress through the screens it gives you the option to download the iso or make a usb drive install.
I haven't been able to install windows 8.1 either. The windows install fails on me shortly after choosing which drive to install windows on. I can't remember the error message.
Any help on that would be appreciated.

  • Installing Windows 7 on my bootcamp partition (mid-2009 mac book pro with mountain lion) My computer won't boot from the Windows 7 Install DVD.

    Hello,
I have been trying to install Windows 7 on my macbook pro (mid 2009, MBP53). I have successfully created a bootcamp partition using the assistant. When the computer tries to boot from the windows 7 install dvd, the screen is just black. The dvd spins for a bit, then stops and the computer is just black (no blinking cursor).
Any advice would be very appreciated.
    Thanks.

What kind of an install DVD are you using for Windows?
You can use any DVDs that are hardware specific. Only the full non-hardware soecific DVDs work on the Mac.

  • Can't install ubuntu with wubi on Bootcamp partition

    Hi,
with Wubi you can install ubuntu linux inside a Windows partition without any kind of disk partitioning.
Here https://discussions.apple.com/message/15115515#15115515 you can see that someone installed successfully ubuntu through wubi on bootcamp partition. I tried too but when I choose in what partition want to install ubuntu, have only the D: drive (Macintosh HD) option. Wubi can only be installed in C: (bootcamp), in fact when I tried to install on D: I got obiviously some error.
Windows version is 7 Professional 64 bit, bootcamp version 3.3
    Thank you in advance!

  • Can't install Windows 7 on Boot Camp partition

I ran the Boot Camp application and it formatted a partition but when I try to install Windows 7 Home Premium full version it says the partition is invalid. There was no option to choose NTFS or FAT and now the installer is telling me that the partition is not NTFS.
    What should I do?

Yup. Windows will not install when there are other drives present that have GPT.
Very old simple to just remove until later.
If you were installing to the same drive as OS X (prefer not to of course) still need to pull the drives temporarily until after Windows is done.
you do not need a new drive. You can just format the drive now that you were going to use:
Disk Utility: Partition: 1 or more, does not matter: Advanced: Options - choose MBR Windows partition table format. Click Apply. Then Apply again.
When in Windows 7, choose the entire drive - Advanced Options and delete what DU created! let Windows do its thing - no need to create or format if you deleted / removed those partitions.

  • I used bootcamp assistant to partition my hard drive to install windows.  When I got to the part to install windows, I selected the bootcamp partition and then choose format as instructed but it would not continue stating that the partition was in GPT par

Please help!!  I partitioned my macbook pro hard drive in bootcamp so that I could install windows.  Everything appeared fine until I got to the install part.  I selected the BOOTCAMP partition and then selected format as instucted.  That was it.  The install could not proceed because it says the partion is in the GPT format instead of NTSF.  At this point it erased the "BOOTCAMP" name from the partion but the partion still exists.
I tried to reform by going back on the OS side, in disk utitly, erase and format.  It will not allow me to select NSTF format.
What do I do to fix this??
    Thanks for you comments.
    Kristina

In Boot Camp Assistant when you select the format option the Boot Camp partition it automatically formats the Boot Camp partition as NTFS since this is what Windows requires. There is no option to select NTFS or any other format type.

  • HT200158 How do you to access Microsoft windows 7 files systems from OSX mountain lion

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4697 describes how to enable access to Microsoft windows file systems from an OSX lion system.
Mountain lion does not have this entry.
Now that I have a mac with Mountain LIon installed,
how do acces the files on a Microsoft windows 7 system that I have previously accessed?

Well as I pointed out in my post, "Sadly, my Text Edit documents are still all there, every single time I opened them and made a small change, there is another copy stretching all the way back to the day I installed Mountain Lion." so if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will concede that it is a good idea. Short of that, no I have been capable of making my own backups since I was 16 years old (16 years ago) I don't need my computer to endlessly do it for me in a way I am completely unable to shut off. That's what I have external hard drives, flash drives, a DVD burner, Drop Box, E-mail (as in emailing copies to myself) and icloud for. If I am doing something and I don't have access to a single one of those options, I don't know why I brought my computer with me in the first place. And I don't see how you can say it's an illusory gain in disk space, hundreds of copies of text documents, garageband files, Final Cut files, Motion Files and basically any program that makes files onto my comptuer that I can myself make incremental changes to, those all need to be stored somehow. Again, if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will agree with you that that is a good thing because IF it only saved for a week, it wouldn't be an issue. Sadly, no matter how many links you post, I still have text edit backups stretching from today back to July 26. They're not going away and I have no reason to beleive any other file I edit is going to go away either since they haven't been. They're all there eating up HD space and this imaginary "week" limit is simply not coming into effect. I hate it and there needs to be a simple way to simply shut it off. I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on external drives just for my main hard drive to be filled up with hundreds un useless, undeletable backups of stuff I already have backed up.

  • Can't boot from bootable mountain lion 10.8 Usb

    Hi guys...
My friend is in big trouble, he has macbook (Late 2006) with 1.83 core 2 duo processor and mac os x 10.5 was installed at the time of purchase.
Due to some problems, he formatted his hard drive and installed windows 7 on it, now he has only windows 7 on his macbook.
Now he want to install Mountain Lion 10.8 back (he don't have installation disk which comes with macbook). so i downloaded mountain lion 10.8 from web which is almost 4.1 GB.
Here is the procedure i followed to create a bootable stick.
I formatted my Kingston 16 GB USB using Disk Utility with Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Then partitioned it with these configs.
    Volume Scheme:1
    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journeled)
    Options= selected GUID Partion Table
Then in restore tab, i selected source as downloaded file named as InstallEDS.dmg (about 4.1gb) and dragged Usb in destination. then pressed restore.
When i restated macbook and pressed option key (ALT) to load boot menu. It does not show usb, it only shows windows option.
So please help me to solve it, anything wrong i did or if i missed anything.
I want to install Mountain Lion 10.8 from USB Stick.

There are a few problems here, first Mountian Lion won't install on a 2006 MacBook, it diesn't meet the minimum specifications. http://support.apple.com/kb/SP654
Secondly you shouldn't install something purchased under one apple id onto another persons computer.
